Contact our Secretary. This issue covers the Armistice centenary and we have several very interesting articles relating to that including a local Camberwell WWII hero Dam Buster. We also give a big thank you to long time advertisers – those who have stuck with us for very many years – Burwood Hwy Mowers (38 years), East Burwood Travel (34 years), D’Alton Hairdressing (25 years), Burwood Auto & Burwood Village (12 years) and Bendigo Bank who are celebrating their 15th birthday (11 years). Surely our long-time advertisers should be listed in the Guinness Book of Records!

BELATED happy birthday greetings to local resident, Freda Miles (née Webb), who

turned 101 years old on 22 August.Freda was born in Northampton-

shire England, where she worked as a tailoress. She and husband Reg married in 1938 just prior to World War II; she recalls that they were only bombed ‘a couple of times’!

At the suggestion of Reg’s friend who had settled in Vermont, the family left England on 15 April 1949 bound for Australia on P&O’s Chitral. Reg built their home in Carinya Road Vermont, second daughter Jenny was born and his building company Miles & Conlin began. Quickly becoming part of the local community, the family attended nearby St Luke’s Anglican Church where Freda was a member of the choir for 25 years.

When Reg died in 1989, Freda volunteered at the local Salvation Army Op Shop which she managed for seven years until they decided she was too old and must leave; she adamantly refused until management made her leave the premises. Customers decided to shop elsewhere and the shop closed.

Freda was still working four days a week at a Canterbury Road Op Shop when she turned 100. Much fuss was

made on the day which she celebrated while working at the shop. However, shortly after they decided that Freda was too old and unceremoniously deprived her of the role she had so faithfully undertaken for 23 years.

Luckily another Op Shop Freda had assisted since 2010 for one day a week, welcomed her with open arms; she now she spends six days a week serving behind the counter of Youth Education Support’s Op Shop in Forest Hill where she is also their Ambassador.

By the way, quite a few of Freda’s colleagues, outraged at her treatment at the former Op Shop, walked out when she was made to leave. Some now volunteer with her and customers too followed Freda, so it was a win-win for YES.

Some other volunteer roles include cooking meals at home for the Salvation Army who distributed them to the sick and elderly, and delivering Neighbourhood Watch newsletters, which she still does.

Freda, well-known and well-loved by her many op-shop fans, is a well-spoken, immaculately attired, slender lady with a bright smile, courteous manner and superior customer service skills. Her 101st birthday was celebrated at work at the op shop (of course).

YES Inc. Ambassador Freda’s message: There is a growing number of young people in need. Every dollar that we receive is respected and passionately used to ease the plight of these worthy young members of our community. … This is certainly a blessed mission for me to support and contribute to at 101 years of age.

Freda, who has two granddaughters and two great-grandsons, attributes her longevity to the fact that she’s never smoked and has always been a great walker. Sitting at home knitting is not an option for this sprightly, intelligent centenarian. Roll on 102!

RAINE BIANCALT

Freda MilesA £10 Pom starts her second century

₤10 PomsPost-war, the Australian government had embarked on a campaign to encour-age – mostly British – im-migration. The catchcry of the time was ‘populate or perish’. Adult emigrants were charged ₤10 for their fare (children travelled

free) and became known as ₤10 Poms. They were drawn by promises of em-ployment, housing, climate and lifestyle. Sometimes their dreams were not re-alised and about one-quar-ter returned home within a few years of their arrival. Not so Freda and Reg.

There had been fears of post-war unemploy-ment but for many years the unemployment figure remained very low. Labour shortages were espe-cially acute in the building industry and progress in home-building was slow. Many saw large-scale im-migration as a solution but

lack of shipping resulted in few arrivals before 1948. Although the housing short-age remained serious, by 1949 more than 130 000 houses and flats had been built and the number of fac-tories almost doubled since pre-war years.

EIGHTY-FIVE years ago, a short article (see below left) in The Australasian, of Saturday 8 July 1933, outlined a plan for guarding the Shrine. One of those tasked with doing so was local ex-soldier Doug Burrell.

GUARDING THE SHRINE.

The plan of the Premier (Sir Stanley Ar-gyle) for the guarding of the Shrine of Remembrance by former members of the A.I.F. is likely to be realised, though in a modified form. The original proposal was that there should be a guard of about six to eight men at the Shrine and to replace the usual police guard at the gates of Gov-ernment House; also that there should be a ceremonious changing of the guard at certain hours each day, done in such a way that the public would be attracted to wit-ness the spectacle. The Police department was willing to co-operate, and so was the Defence department, but the Minister for Defence (Senator Sir George Pearce) point-ed out that the disadvantage of employing men who were only soldiers for such a task was that they would not have the power of arrest.

This difficulty seems to have had some weight, for the Premier has now compro-mised to the extent that the guard shall consist of policemen who are returned soldiers, and that they shall wear the old A.I.F. uniform. It seems to be a happy way out, for the guard will now be able to arrest intruders (who have already done slight damage to the Shrine), and the Shrine will be guarded by men who were comrades of those whom the Shrine commemorates.

WILLIAM Burrell and his wife Francis (née Turner) were among the earliest settlers in Burwood. William, a blacksmith and farrier,

conducted his business in Toorak Road. Of their eight children, Doug, Jim, and Wilfred served during WWI.

Born in 1891, Doug was the first to enlist and joined the 1st Signal Corps Australian Light Horse, arriving in Egypt for further training before going on to Anzac Cove on 12 May 1915.

With the remainder of the Anzac Force, he was evacu-ated to Alexandria on 19 December 1915 and there joined the Desert Column formed to conduct mobile operations against the Turks in Palestine. Doug was promoted to Lance Corporal and was Mentioned in Despatches for bravery in the field during the battle for Rafa in January 1917. In November 1917 he was awarded the Military Medal for bravery in the field and in February 1918, was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal for conspicu-ous gallantry and devotion to duty in establishing and maintaining telephone communications under heavy shellfire during the battle for Jerusalem.

The Burrell boys returned home safely following the armistice in the Middle East on 31 October 1918. Doug arrived on 24 December and he and his wife Ellen, whom he had married just prior to leaving for overseas, settled in Balwyn and he joined the Tramways.

On completion of the Shrine of Remembrance fifteen years later, the Police Commissioner was authorised to select highly decorated WWI veterans to be employed as Shrine Guards and in April 1935 Doug joined the Police Force specifically for duty at the Shine.

Francis Douglas Burrell DCM MM served as a Shrine Guard until August 1951. He died 14 years later and was interred at Box Hill Cemetery.

The names of the three Burrell brothers are remem-bered on the Roll of Honour at St Faith’s Anglican Church, Burwood, the Burwood War Memorial in War-rigal Road and Burwood Primary School’s Honour Roll.

The stories of the men on St Faith’s Roll of Honour have been recorded in a booklet called From Orchards to Trenches, copies of which can be ordered from the parish office for $10 plus postage.

LESLIE Gordon Knight, DSO (7 March 1921 – 16 September 1943) was a Royal Australian Air Force pilot who served with the RAF's Bomber Command

during World War II. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order in 1943 for taking part in Operation Chastise while flying with 617 Squadron. Knight's crew attacked, hit and breached the Eder Dam, the second dam to be attacked, after his comrades had previously scored one hit and one miss.

Les Knight was born on 7 March 1921 and lived in Bowen Street Camberwell. He had planned to be an accountant, but joined the RAAF in 1941 and by autumn was sent to England.

After training as a pilot, he formed a full crew who went on to fly with him throughout the rest of their operational life. The crew was posted to 50 Squadron in September 1942. Knight had flown on some 26 operations by March 1943 when the crew were offered the chance to transfer into a new squadron being formed at nearby Scampton for a secret mission. They took a joint decision to transfer together. The crew’s faith was probably because they had together recognised that Knight was an exceptional pilot, even though he couldn’t ride a bicycle or drive a car.2

While en route to a low level attack on the Dortmund Ems canal, on the night of 16 September 1943, Knight’s aircraft hit trees and was severely damaged. He battled for many minutes to keep it aloft while the seven members of his crew bailed out. He then piloted the stricken Lancaster away from the village of Den Ham and tried to land in a field. Unfortunately, he hit a hidden ditch and was killed on impact. He was buried by the grateful villagers in the local Den Ham General Cemetery, The Netherlands. Because he managed to avoid the built-up area of Den Ham, Knight is still regarded as a hero in the village.

Knight’s crew members landed safely, owing their lives to their young pilot, something that they never forgot. Five of the men evaded capture and two became POWs.

Local people have organised a weekend commemoration of Les Knight over the weekend of Friday 14-16 September, bringing together members of his family, the families of his crew and local people. Also present will be family members of the local underground resistance movement which helped several of the crew evade capture and return to England.

In the 1955 film The Dam Busters, Knight was played by Welsh actor Denys Graham. And so, with each day, week, month, year passing since that fateful night in September ‘43 Les Knight lies in rest in the old general graveyard in Den Ham. His grave often visited, flowers laid, his headstone cleaned, respects and thanks paid. Les Knight. Never been forgotten by Den Ham.3

Les Knight is remembered on a brass plaque inside the Camberwell Uniting Church, 314 Camberwell Road.*With thanks to local resident, Joe Vella, AHSA, Aviation Historical Society, who suggested this article.

Les Knight: Dambuster

In May 1943, the Royal Air Force launched an audacious raid on key war-time manufacturing targets in the Ruhr Valley of Germany – Operation Chastise. The mission became famously known as the Dambusters raid. The key players were Barnes Wallis who designed the innovative bomb used, Guy Gibson who put the No 617 squadron together, the Lancaster bombers and the 113 air crew gathered from Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and America who executed their task with great effect while suffering significant casualties.1

10 Burwood Bulletin September–november 2018

IN the Burwood Bulletin’s issue 102, September 2006, former President (then designated Coordinator) Mary O’Keefe offered her perceptions of the early years’

issues.“It was at the second issue that Jean Warland joined

the group as a reporter. Actually, Jean was instrumental in gathering together most of the material from the original advertisers for the third issue. This issue was covered by the cost of advertisements and the local businesses were very supportive. For many years the Bulletin stumbled from one issue to the next, but somehow through Jean’s enthusiasm and her ability to gather in and utilise other talent, it survived.” Thank you, Jean!

“In 1982 Jean offered to take over the job as Editor as well as her other duties. An offer that was too good to refuse. For the next ten years the Burwood Bulletin was run by Jean with Sandra Holt, and Ven Houston and

their army of volunteers until one day Jean sadly died in her sleep. At that time it was very close to folding. I attended the AGM which was held on 17 March 1993, and there was an intense sense of loss and members of the committee were struggling to know how to keep going. Keith Walter, who was a Camberwell Councillor at the time, gave a passionate and charismatic speech about not being defeated. Margaret Warland and I tried to put to bed the Bulletin which Jean had almost completed, but that wasn’t without its problems. In the Bulletin Bank Account at the time of Jean’s death, there was a healthy $2000 which went towards publishing the next issue, with 5000 copies being produced …”

The Burwood Bulletin has been around now for 150 issues, or nearly 40 years. That is pretty good going for a magazine run entirely by unpaid volunteers, some of whom are very passionate about keeping it afloat in our current climate of flagging advertising.

RAINE BIANCALT

we're 150!

WE wish to thank our current and long-time advertisers. From the first issue with advertising (issue 002), you may recognise some names: Framed & Hung, Burwood Fuel & Fodder and Burwood Highway Mower Sales & Service.

In issue 014 August 1984 East Burwood Travel began with a quarter-column ad. After a change of ownership, they continue with us to today where they take the inside front cover.

From 048 February 1993 we welcomed D’Alton Hairdressing whose regular half-page ad also has a 25 year unbroken record. Burwood Auto and Burwood Village joined us in 101 June 2006; Bendigo Bank joined us in 104 March 2007; they all continue to this day.

At a time when our flagging advertising is causing concern, we are most grateful for the support given to us by all our advertisers, from full-page advertisers, to our directory listings. Without you there would be no Burwood Bulletin.

We thank our advertisers

CARS built during the vintage years 1919 to 1930 are now very much in demand but that was not always the case. For five to six years after WWll the

production of new cars barely caught up with demand, in fact it was commonplace for prospective buyers to be on lengthy waiting lists. This meant that many cars built in the vintage era were quite common in traffic until the 1950s when production of new cars caught up – ideal for buyers but dealers were being swamped with old cars nobody wanted. Many went to overstocked wreckers, some supplied axles for home-built trailers and others were stripped of any ID and abandoned in quiet streets. But some were actually sold in decrepit state at very affordable prices or even given to young chaps seeking their first car.

That was the wonderful era during which I got my driver’s licence, in 1954 to be precise, at the start of the great Rock‘n’Roll era. All the young men about town were getting A Model Fords, National Chevs, 4-cylinder Dodges, etc.; all built in the late 1920s, all quite powerful, most of them unroadworthy to some extent or other but all very affordable. The fact of the matter was that these lads suffered under subliminal peer pressure to have powerful cars regardless of safety concerns so as not to be branded ‘square’. What a disgrace it was to be classed as such!

There was one make of car that meant the owner was automatically classed as ‘square’ and that was the humble vintage Morris with its tiny 11.9 or 13.9 horsepower engine. To make matters worse a Morris from 1927 to 1930 was known as a Square Radiator model. Presumably out of fear for my safety my father insisted that a Morris be my first car, ‘ideal to learn on’ as he would say. He seemed to be oblivious to my pleadings as he looked through ‘Cars For Sale’ in The Age every Saturday. To my horror, one day he said we would go and look at a Morris

Shake, rattle & roll . . .

(continued on page 40)

advertised near home.We saw the car, it was a single-seater that had been

used as a plumber’s packhorse, nuff said. In complete reversal of form my father told me to forget it but I wanted it come hell or high water. I could not explain my change of attitude at the time but now I’m sure it was Kismet twisting my arm.

I drove the Morris to work every day, ignored the belittling calls of ‘square’, polished the polishable bits, worked endlessly on the worn engine, transmission, you-name-it – until - one day the hood tore open in a storm. Disaster. Hoods were expensive and I was still an apprentice. With no cover the seat got drenched overnight and the dashboard instruments rendered useless; I had no choice but to take the train to work.

However, the old Morris looked kind of sporty with no hood so over the next weekend I painted the car red, testosterone red. The finishing touch was a donation of two decals meant for Challenger Tractors. With these displayed along both sides of the bonnet the old Morris earned the name of ‘Challenger’ and set about challenging any car that looked as if it had the same or less power to a ‘burn’. This led to meeting other owners of other old Morris cars, not all of whom shared my enthusiasm. On one fateful day in March 1957 a gathering of six sympathetic enthusiasts at my home declared the formation of a club to try to save vintage Morrises from extinction.

By August 1957 numbers had swelled to over 20, which meant a car trial was in order for the newly named Vintage Morris Club of Victoria. Some 16 vintage Morris cars plus a couple of other makes filled the street in front of my home and were lined up for the first of two photographs. The entries then took off for what became a drive into history. A second photograph was taken

13Burwood Bulletin September–november 2018

TWO years before she died in 1984 for a history assignment I interviewed my mother Iris from the perspective of a ‘Melbourne teenager during World War

II’. I was often surprised by her comments about life at the time. In March 1942 food rationing began; identity cards were

issued to those over 16: I didn’t have an identity card. I don’t recall anyone having an identity card.

The family had to go without a lot of things. What we got didn’t take us far, but we managed. I bought two ration books. It was illegal. I don’t know where people got them from but people had them available to sell.

Clothing rationing: I loved clothes and had them made by a woman in Brunswick. I would pick a style I liked, she would measure me and next time I went it was ready. You were allowed to buy whatever the coupons allowed. Stockings! They were like gold – you’d only wear them once and they’d be laddered from heel to thigh. The boys’ favourite saying was “Can I follow your run?” and it was right up your leg!

National Security Act, 1942, allowed for women to be drafted into essential industries: I didn’t know about that Act. During the war you weren’t supposed to change jobs. I left one job for another and received a letter saying that I could be jailed but nothing ever happened, probably because I was working in a factory making ‘dog’ biscuits for the boys at the front. They were four inches square and so hard. We sometimes put notes in the tins and got letters back. I later worked as a drink waitress at the Australia Hotel serving American servicemen, so I guess that’s why they didn’t try to move me back to the factory.

Mid-1942, ‘brownouts’ commenced: You had to have your blinds down all the time. It was awful coming home on the tram at night – you didn’t know where you were. The trams were dimly lit and had blinds drawn. When they stopped you had to get off quickly when the door opened. You couldn’t see outside as the streets were pitch-black. I used to count the stops. I had 42 before my stop. But at about that time an American negro was murdering people. We were all scared travelling alone at night.

Panic in 1942 following the first of 59 bombings of Darwin: I don’t remember people panicking. The war seemed a long way away and life went on as usual but we all got a scare when the submarines got into Sydney harbour.

The newspapers listed ‘so many missing, so many dead’ and who was coming home on leave. It was lovely to read about someone you knew coming home on leave. But it was mostly about people missing in action. It was sad for those with sons and relatives on active duty.

The Americans were big spenders: They always had plenty of money. They could take a girl out and show her a good time. Nothing was too expensive. Their uniforms were really nice and the only time we went in taxis was when we were with the Yanks – with Australians you walked or took a tram or train. The Americans were not used to our money and would hand money over to the driver and ask them to take the money – and they did!

Were Australian men jealous of Americans? They were. Americans treated girls as they should be treated – with respect, gave them a good time and weren’t ‘expecting the world’ because of it. With Australians it was the other way. Naturally the Australian girls took to the Americans.

Post-war scheme to remove women from workforce: I know it happened but I was working with other single girls; our jobs were not for males and so we never had to leave.

Life for women post-war: Everything was ‘peace’. It was a change from Americans to Australians. I suppose the girls didn’t like it much because the good times they had were over. It was hard for the men to settle down after having been away for so long. There were many divorces. I don’t know what Catholics did – they must have ‘stuck it out’.

Iris’s experience of WWII: We really did have a ball because we could have gone out every night of the week. I had quite a few boyfriends during the war because some were overseas and some here. The Americans took us dancing, roller-skating, ice-skating, a bit of everything. I don’t think Australian people really felt it but everyone knew somebody who’d been killed, missing or maimed.

IN November, Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Victoria performs Dublin-born Victor Herbert’s only Irish themed operetta, Eileen (1917), at Forest Hill College.

The operetta is loosely based on the 1835 novel Rory O’Moore by Herbert’s grandfather, Samuel Lover. The story is set in 1798, a decade after the start of the French Revolution and the year of the brutal uprisings of the United Irishmen. Convent-raised Eileen returns to Sligo Bay after her formative years in France to the home of her Aunt Maude, an attractive widow. Barry O’Day, chip off the old block of a legendary freedom fighter father, comes back to lead his cronies in a fight for independence from the British and to reclaim his land, with the anticipated help of soon-to-arrive French forces. Though he’s been flirtatious with the charming Maude, it’s Eileen he loves. Maude is sympathetic to the rebels’ cause, and keeps the English Colonel Lester at bay, allowing Barry to go undercover as her groom. In the end, the king pardons all rebels, and Eileen can marry Barry in a grand finale that unites the opposing camps – at least for the moment.

Herbert, arguably the most important theatrical composer of the early 20th century, spearheaded the transformation from the traditional Viennese operetta form of the past to the musical comedies that dominated the decades to follow. Herbert was born in Dublin in 1859. Aged three, after his father's death, he went to live with his grandmother in Kent, later re-joining his mother in Stuttgart in 1867. After playing cello in orchestras

throughout Europe – including with Eduard Strauss in Vienna – he returned home to study composition at Stuttgart Conservatory. After marrying Therese Forster, a soprano with the Stuttgart Opera, he followed her to America where she worked with the New York Metropolitan Opera.

Directed by versatile auteur Suzanne Barton, with musical direction from multi-award nominee Kent Ross, and featuring choreography and performers from the Cosgriff Irish Dancing School, this superb production makes its Australian premiere.

Herbert’s Eileen is a grand Irish ode to his maternal homeland with captivating characters and a joyful score. PICTURES (Clockwise from above): The Queen ordained that all who worked at Bletchley Park received this badge, and we received it too. Interestingly, Pat says, Bletchley Park is active again, looking for people to combat our next big problem – cyber hacking; Pat Palmer today still proudly wears her badges and medals; (inset) Pat at age 18, having just joined the Navy; Having lunch in the Wentworth Café in Little Collins Street. Standing is Petty Officer Bridge – as tough as nails! Pat is wearing the hat (right); Despatch riders ferried messages every two hours day and night. They were under orders to shoot anyone who tried to stop them.

PAT Palmer rises to greet me as I enter her comfortable, spacious room at Camberwell Green. The dresser is crowded with family photos and, as

she tells me, despite her 93 years and a recent stroke she has no intention of shuffling off this mortal coil yet; she has too much still to experience.

She was born Patricia Simpson in 1925, the younger of two sisters who grew up first in Carramar Avenue, Camberwell, then later in Wattle Valley Road, Surrey Hills. Her grandfather had started Simpson’s Manufacturing in Burnley. All his sons worked in the company and Pat’s father was the chemist. They made many products – lanoline, shampoo, brilliantine . . . eventually diversifying into cosmetics.

Pat went to school at Strathcona before leaving to become a touch typist. Her boyfriend had joined up and after training in Queensland to be a commando, he was sent to Borneo. “I didn’t see him again until the end of the war,” says Pat. “He survived, but came back full of malaria”.

It was in 1942 that Pat joined the WRANs. She was working with the Crippled Children Society in Queen Street at the time and one particular day, having gone for a walk, she came upon a Navy office. Then and there she decided “I’m going to join the Navy”. When she took the papers home for her father to sign (she was still under age), he said “No, you’re not!” But Pat was determined, and at last he relented.

After two weeks on the HMAS Lonsdale to do a rookie course of drilling and marching she, being a touch typist, was drafted to work stationed at a block of flats called “Monterey” in Queens Road, St Kilda, that housed a joint US-Australian code breaking unit. Her category and

(somewhat oblique) job title was “Writer”. “We worked 8-hour ‘watches’ spread over the 24

hours; the work never stopped. The most amazing thing gained from being in the Navy was discipline. It was drummed into us!” says Pat.

They worked under the US Navy, who brought the IBM computers out to help in deciphering the Japanese code. As with those working at Bletchley Park in England, they were all placed under oath not to divulge what they were doing. Pat expanded on this: “When my family asked ‘What are you doing?’ I would answer ‘Just typing’. Only one girl was heard speaking about her work at a party. She was dishonourably demobbed the next day. One of my girlfriends was at the ceremony and said ‘It

The code was the thing

was just terrible seeing her hatband ripped off, her badges taken, and she gone, in disgrace’”.

It was not until decades later that the real work carried out was revealed. What they were listening to were some of the most secret transmissions of the Japanese – messages so sensitive that they could not be transmitted by telephone. Instead teams of despatch riders set out from the base every two hours day and night, ferrying messages along the Point Nepean Rd to the Monterey Flats.

After six months at Monterey the government built barracks on the other side of the Albert Park Lake (where the Formula 1 takes place now). Some girls were billeted there, but Pat was allowed to sleep at home (in Wattletree Road, Malvern). She preferred this, though acknowledged “it was a bit scary walking to the station through streets darkened owing to the brown-out”.

In describing her work, Pat said, “The allies had obtained photos of the keyboard of the Japanese code machine. These were put onto our keyboards, and that is how we typed the messages. The code was just lines, like matchsticks, so we didn’t know what we were typing. The cryptographers trying to read the code could refer to the Japanese keyboard, which was a huge breakthrough. We were just typing for the eight hours of our watch, about eight of us sitting in a room next to another huge one filled with the massive IBM computers that the Americans had brought out. They were working all the time, causing the whole floor to vibrate constantly. The noise was incredible!

“The computers produced masses of paper, which we were busy converting to punched cards that in turn went to large teams of sorters. We didn’t have any idea what we were typing; we just knew how serious it was. We had been told this when we started – and we wanted to help. It was hard, constant work, but we all wanted to serve”.

After the war Pat became a manageress in a boutique. She loved selling clothes and dressing ladies, as well as the opportunities to travel, buying for the business. She has a keen interest in sport – particularly tennis and golf, which she continued to play into her eighties. She loves continuing to learn in life, communicating with people, being involved with the church and delights in seeing her family continue to grow. The aging process and a recent stroke seem to be just a hiccup in a life that Pat is thankful for, and feels blessed to continue with optimism to greet each day.

OUR twenty-second in this series of walks begins in the centre of Box Hill, a major public transport

hub for trains, buses and a tram. Travellers from Burwood have two bus routes to choose between – route 903 runs direct to Box Hill, and the local bus route 766 takes the “scenic” route along local roads. Both these buses can be caught in Warrigal Road, 50m south of Toorak Road. Leave Box Hill Central heading into Main Street, then cross under Station Street using the underpass. We start the walk on the corner of Station and Bank Streets, at the exit of this underpass (Melway 75A F4). The walk is about 7km and can easily be broken into parts.

BURWOOD WALKS

WALK along Bank Street and cross over to the railway side shared pathway. Shortly on the left, you will see a line of pines marking the

Box Hill Town Hall. If you have time, walk around this imposing building, which (during office hours) includes an “Artspace” gallery, great stonework and toilets. The nearby Anglican Church and some street art are also worthy of note. Once back on the pathway, there are some surprises – you will be very close to the trains because a section of the path is unfenced. There is also a playground/park area dominated by tall eucalypts.

Cross into this park, and then continue north along Linsley Street past the unusual fire brigade building. Cross Whitehorse Road, then turn left (west) past the police station. I found this a surprisingly pleasant stroll, looking at the frontages of all the public buildings and getting a good overview of cosmopolitan Box Hill (both old and new). Walk to and cross Station Street, continuing to the first street on the right (Bruce Street). Walk north gently downhill along Bruce Street, starting beside the imposing Uniting Church. At the end, enter our first gardens/park (Box Hill Gardens), which is a striking change from

bustling Box Hill. This park is huge! It features ball courts, a skating area, an enormous playground, two sets of toilets and extensive manicured lawns. Circumnavigate this park anticlockwise, finishing at the pond. (We will leave the park near this pond.)

Once you reach the pond, look west to another landmark building, namely Box Hill Hospital. Walk west between the Box Hill and Epworth Eastern Hospitals, along Arnold Street. Cross Elgar Road going right, then immediately left into Victoria Crescent, beside Box Hill Institute. Look for the

unusual “windmill” on the roof of Building E1. What do you think it does?

Turn left into the first street – Kingsley Crescent. Notice the unusual downpipes along this street. In just five minutes, the whole atmosphere changes as we enter our second gardens. In these much quieter Kingsley Gardens, you can see birds (I saw a pair of Gang Gang Cockatoos) and many large trees, including a magnificent oak. Other facilities include a BBQ area, drinking water and a playground. When you are ready, walk west from the playground to a street also heading west. This is George Street and its street sign is slightly concealed by a power pole.

Continue along George Street to its end (just a few minutes), and along a right-of-way that has some tall trees despite its narrowness. At the end turn right, uphill to the first street (Victoria Crescent) where we turn left (west) for a few minutes. This whole section of walking features a mix of housing styles (including charming weatherboard houses) and redevelopment, as is common in these suburbs. As Victoria Crescent starts to turn left we turn right (north) into Rostrevor Parade. The second street on the left is Kenmare Street. Turn left here. Walk past Mont Albert Primary School, turn left into Carrick Street, then turn right into Carlyle Crescent, and into quite a large park (Mont Albert Park). From the playground, exit this park near the SW corner, and walk west to the end of the delightfully named Threadneedle Street. At the end, turn right, then left into Yonga Road, which leads directly into our final huge park/gardens.

This huge park has two parts: Beckett Park and Maranoa Gardens. Our entry point is close to the indigenous flora reserve (with a short fenced circuit track and signage, taking about five minutes). Once back at the top, you will see the lookout tower (panoramic views), carved wooden sculptures, a playground, war memorial, toilets and car park, which is near the main park entry. We exit the park here later. You will also see the entry gate for Maranoa Gardens (the other half of this parkland). Note its opening hours.

Maranoa Gardens is quite something! It is such a large garden that it warrants a day visit in itself. There are several different environments to explore as can be seen from the map on the noticeboard. There is also a brochure about the garden. Look for extensive views to the north and west as you explore this beautiful spot. (There is even a pot plant in its public toilet!)

Eventually, return to the exit near the war memorial and then walk down Parring Road to Whitehorse Road. Tram stop 50 is on the left (east) side, for the short return tram trip to Box Hill.

THE Forest Hill Woodturners Inc. Club is over 30 years old. They say they are a happy group of men and women who enjoy doing things with

their hands. Their oldest member is 92! Member Ben Enthoven says that of their 60 members

“we have about 30 active members turning; some of the older members come for the companionship similar to a men’s shed and have a lot of fun.

“Our emphasis is on safety and the correct way of using the tools. We have a number of expert turners who undertake to teach newcomers how it is done.”

Ben says, “It is quite amazing how wood turns into beautiful objects under the hands of a turner” and that Australia is very fortunate that most of our home-grown woods are hardwoods. “Not many countries worldwide can boast the wide variety of timbers we have on our back doorstep.”

If anyone is interested in learning the art of turning in a safe and happy environment Ben and his fellow members (male and female) welcome you to visit and watch them ‘turn’.

The club meets on Mondays 12:30pm–3pm; and first and third Saturdays 9:30am–12:30pm at Warrawong Centre, 32 Richmond Street, Blackburn South.

Check out our Mainly for Men section in the Community Notices for other woodturning groups – Koonung Woodturning Guild and Waverley Woodworkers, as well as four Men’s Sheds.

CANCER Council Victoria’s popular event, Bark For Life, is back at Jells Park this year and dog lovers of all ages in Victoria are encouraged to grab their

pooch and get involved. Bark For Life is an event honouring the caring qualities

of dogs during a human cancer experience and is an offshoot of the popular Relay For Life events. Participants celebrate cancer survivors and patients, honour and remember loved ones lost to cancer and raise money to help save more lives.

Over 33 000 Victorians are diagnosed with cancer each year. Bark For Life will raise funds for Cancer Council Victoria’s work in cancer research, prevention and support services. Research shows that not only do dogs

provide companionship for those with cancer but they can also lower their owner’s blood pressure, decrease stress and anxiety, improve their owner’s mood, increase their levels of activity and act as a social magnet – all of which can aid in cancer treatment and recovery.

Bark For Life Volunteer Co-Chairmanager, Denise Femino said: “Bark For Life celebrates and honours dogs for their love and support during a cancer experience. Being a part of the Bark For Life event is a meaningful and practical way to support those affected by cancer and to get your canine friends out for a good walk!”

ONE hundred years ago, Evangeline Ireland (Sister Faith) found a young disabled girl left inside a chicken coop while her parents were at work.

That incident led to her establishing Victoria’s first free kindergarten for crippled children: ‘Yooralla’ (an Aboriginal word meaning ‘place of love’).

By August 1919, contributions from Melburnians to the Million Pennies Fund, raised 83 512 pennies (£347/19/4). In today’s money $27 038; a very sizeable amount from a populace recovering from WWI.

Yooralla evolved and developed over the following decades, along with the disability sector, to become one of Australia’s largest non-profit disability service organisations, supporting over 30 000 Victorians living with a disability.

Sources:https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yoorallawww.findingrecords.dhhs.vic.gov.au/collectionresultspage/Yooralla-Hospital-School-for-Crippled-Children-and-Adults

In 1977, Yooralla merged with the Victorian Society for Crippled Children and Adults (VSCCA) to become the Yooralla Society of Victoria. Following amalgamation, the Yooralla Society of Victoria began providing services to all people with a disability, not just children.

Yooralla employs over 2100 staff throughout Victoria providing accommodation, respite, day services, therapy, recreation, education and self-advocacy to children and adults alike. They also provide an extensive range of assistive and communication technologies through their Brooklyn Independent Living Centre. Its services are developed in partnership with people with disability and their families and carers. It provides essential services for people of all ages and disabilities, regardless of how they acquired the disability.

Yooralla's vision is to help achieve 'a world where people with disability are equal citizens'. Its mission is 'to provide quality, sustainable and flexible services that uphold human rights and create opportunities, empowering individuals to live the life they choose'.

Yooralla began offering small-scale residential accommodation (such as group homes or independent units) in the late 1970s, beginning with houses in Balwyn and Box Hill. Since 1979 numerous other houses have been established throughout Melbourne and regional Victoria.

In 1993, the Balwyn hostel complex closed and residents

were relocated to new community-based housing in Box Hill. Yooralla’s last hostel was closed in 2002, and its portfolio for residential accommodation services is now entirely based on a community-inclusion model.

Yooralla also provides services in respite, community participation, learning, therapy, employment, education and independent-living support, for adults and children, using a social model of service.

On 12 February 2018 Yooralla officially turned 100. If you are interested in volunteering, download www.yooralla.com.au/get-involved/Volunteering/volunteer-expression-of-interest-form

Burwood Village 1963

Reader PETER WYND sent us an image that he thought might be of interest to us – and to our readers. We reproduce it below; a fascinating – for some – view of Burwood 55 years ago!

“I have a photo of the Burwood Rd and Warrigal Rd intersection, looking

SW, taken in 1963 or ’64. The clock traffic lights would now be well into the much enlarged intersection.

These traffic signals may be the ones in the front yard of the RACV building in Bourke St Melbourne.

Seedsmans supermarket became the first Safeway store in Australia. It was owned by Bill Pratt, an American. When visiting, he used to park his Lincoln Continental in the rear lane, blocking it completely.

I have collaborated this info with a friend, Tim Cavanagh. We believe it all to be true. He and I both lived in Burwood from the early ’50s.”

ACCORDING to research, getting your hands dirty in the garden can increase your serotonin levels and contact with soil bacteria triggers the release of serotonin in our

brain. Serotonin is a happy chemical, a natural anti-depressant and strengthens the immune system. Lack of serotonin in the brain causes depression.

Ironically, in the face of our hyper-hygienic, germicidal, protective clothing, obsessive health-and-safety society, research has emerged about how good dirt is for us, and dirt-deficiency in childhood is implicated in contributing to a spectrum of illnesses including allergies, asthma and mental disorders.

Harvesting products from the garden releases dopamine in the brain; a response which has evolved over nearly 200 000 years of hunter gathering. The dopamine release can be triggered by sight and smell as well as by actually plucking the fruit.

The above works more effectively with organic soil and crops that haven’t been contaminated with herbicides.

A 2008 study found that glyphosate, the active ingredient of Roundup, depletes serotonin and dopamine levels in mammals. No wonder there’s so much stress, depression and all the addictions and compulsive disorders in the pursuit of feeling good.

won’t have taken up any nutrients. It may look sad and yellow. My grass has amazing green patches – but on closer inspection, it turns out that they’re weeds! As soon as the growth starts, I hose on the Weed ‘n’ Feed.

But by December, the grass is dying, even though it was watered. Why? It’s mostly because the soil gets packed down hard, so the water can’t penetrate. Then the hot sun burns it.

Remedy: First, loosen the soil. Using a garden fork, insert the prongs just a few centimetres and lift, so that the water can get in and the roots can spread. Maybe add some topsoil.

A week later, hose on a liquid fertiliser. But I also add a little squirt of cheap washing-up liquid to the mix, and that is my secret weapon. The washing-up liquid helps the soil absorb the water.

Next, I buy a couple of bags of Horse Poo and to my husband’s horror, I run the lawnmower over it! He has words. Loud words. They go: “You did what with my lawnmower?” I am trying to work out why it is suddenly his lawnmower, but a squirt with the hose soon cleans it. The finely powdered poo is then spread over the lawn and watered in.

Result: Lush green grass for summer!SUZSI MANDEVILLE

PRINCE FOOTE WINS.

“Trafalgar! Alawa! PRINCE FOOTE! PRINCE FOOTE!” In a wild crescendo of excitement thou-sands of voices shouted the histo-ry of the finish for the Melbourne Cup. Men roared with enthusiasm, and smote each other on the back, and waved their hats. Women beat their hands together and added their shrill voices to the din. From all over the course there went up the same thunderous shout. One hundred thousand people were proclaiming what they saw, as the gallant little Derby winner at the last moment, when the stately Al-awa seemed to have already won the race, flashed up on the outside, passed the leaders, and dashed past the judge’s box alone.

No more thrilling climax could have been imagined. It was for

that finish, for those few seconds of enthusiasm when staid, self-con-tained men cast off all restraint, and shouted their thoughts in prim-itive fashion, that the great crowd had assembled at Flemington yes-terday. They had waited for it for weeks full of expectancy; but the thing itself was beyond all expec-tation. First there was the duel be-tween Alawa and Trafalgar, when the two champions singled each other out, and neck and neck raced up the straight until at last Alawa forged ahead just enough to show that his opponent was vanquished. That was exciting enough. It was a race in itself. But barely was that over before Prince Foote made his rush, invincible and overwhelming.

It was long before the cheers died away, and then it was only to break out afresh as Prince Foote was ridden back to scale. Small things

work strangely upon an excited crowd and it was a small thing which set the crowd cheering again as Prince Foote entered the weigh-ing enclosure. All eyes were fixed upon the Judge’s Box, when sud-denly a dainty parasol appeared waving violently in vehement en-thusiasm. This was the spark which fired anew the excitement with which the crowd was charged. Vol-ley on volley of cheers broke out, and Prince Foote received an ova-tion which has been accorded few horses. The crowd were doing hom-age to him. He had proved himself a real prince of the blood – a wor-thy descendant of the long line of classic heroes from which he had sprung. There were cheers for Ala-wa, too, and for Trafalgar. Both had done nobly, and earned honour even in defeat.

The Argus, Wednesday, 3 November 1909

THERE was no colourful television coverage, no radio call. To capture Prince Foote’s incredible win from behind at the 1909 Melbourne Cup the writer used everything at his

disposal to share the event with readers. The heading said it all:

The winner, Prince Foote

LOOKING for a cheap, pleasurable and safe activity that will keep you healthy?

Bicycling through a series of interconnected and renovated green suburban belts might be just the thing you’re looking for.

For those of you who don’t know, Melbourne is full of green belts running through the majority of our suburbs. They originate from disused railway lines, creek and river areas, old industrial sites and unused crown land that skirts past housing developments and similar.

The good news is that the majority of these have been developed by councils into useable parkland containing wide-ranging facilities, including sealed walking and cycling tracks. More importantly, many of these tracks have been connected to form quite a lengthy network of walking and cycling trails.

Taking the time to explore your own community by bike will often lead you on a path of fascinating discovery into neighbouring communities with many hidden treasures.

While I like to cycle, I don’t like having to use main roads where it can be dangerous and noisy. I therefore

seek out quiet suburban trails that give me something nice to look at as I ride by, and give me access to cafés and toilets along the way.

My most recent cycle commenced in Box Hill North as I cycled down the Koonung Creek Trail (beside the Eastern Freeway) to Hay’s Paddock. Then up Kilby Road in Kew on the designated bike path to connect with the Outer Circle Trail which took me through to Deepdene and its marvellous old train cutting to meet the Anniversary Trail.

Riding through Ashburton, Ashwood and finally Holmesglen, I eventually connected to the Gardiners Creek Trail which took me through Burwood past Deakin University and on to the Box Hill Golf Club and beyond.

So what did I see for my troubles? Leafy heritage homes, woodland, lush green parkland, playgrounds, quaint train stations, lake and creek systems and an assortment of trail cafés in case you feel the inclination for refreshment. What’s not to like?

All in all, it was 35 kilometres of bliss, but you have the option of doing as much or as little as you want.

Celtic Jam

“HOW do the musicians know what to play”? This is the most common

question asked by punters when they first experience a traditional Celtic music session, probably in an Irish pub. Unlike at other music events, there aren’t any music stands or sheet music in front of the players, just a roomful of musicians on acoustic instruments in sync together.

Celtic music is traditionally played and passed on by ear. Tunes are learnt during jam sessions, or from other players, from albums, and frequently now from YouTube! Playing by ear gives the player a great sense of

freedom to concentrate on listening to others around them, rather than focusing on a sheet of paper in front of them. It also adds an element of creativity and spontaneity, as players are free to add their own touches to the melody or how they accompany the tune while staying within the framework of the style.

But for the player who’s grown up in Melbourne playing classical music, how do you enter into this Celtic trad world and join the rollicking sessions happening around town? The Celtic Jam weekly sessions at Box Hill Arts Centre were started exactly for this reason. Organiser and teacher, Judy Oleinikov, began the sessions a few years ago when some friends mentioned how much they loved music from Ireland and Scotland, but didn’t think they could ever learn to play by ear. “One player is even from Ireland, but ironically never had a chance to learn the music there when she was growing up”, explains Judy. “She is now very much part of the Melbourne Celtic scene, along with her four children who all play music. And she is 100% used to playing by ear now”.

The Celtic Jam sessions run weekly on Wednesday nights during school terms. Players get together and learn a new tune each week and play through the shared repertoire they have built together. Any player can bring along a new tune to the group and are encouraged to do so. The tunes aren’t technically difficult, and players don’t need to be highly skilled on their instruments.

“It’s more about the social aspect of music”, says Judy. “Getting back to the simplicity of sharing and enjoying a good tune together”. The group is also a performing group, playing regular gigs around Melbourne. Members range from teenagers to retirees, and play whistle, concertina, fiddle, guitar, mandolin, flute, piano, even harp.

“If you’ve always enjoyed music, but don’t know how to get back into it, this is the place you’ve been looking for. Dust off your instrument and come and join us!”Celtic JamWednesday nights during the school term, 7:45–9:15pmBox Hill Community Arts Centre, 470 Station St, Box Hill$10 per session.

WHAT is Scottish Country Dancing and why does the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS)

promote it so widely as offering fun, fitness and friendship for those who attend classes around the world?

Scottish country dancing is a very social form of dance not only because you dance with seven or more people at once instead of just one, but also because smiles and eye contact are almost mandatory! In a non-threatening manner, more experienced dancers always help newcomers complete the dance formations.

Leg strength, stamina, agility, fitness and dynamic balance are all secondary benefits of a fun night of dancing. What more could you ask for in an enjoyable social setting for seven dollars?

Our class is great fun for several reasons: you can come on your own; we laugh a lot; it is a way of keeping fit; our minds are challenged to remember different formations and combinations of sequences within each dance. Memory is sharpened both in the short term i.e.

a reel joy

“what did the teacher say to do next?” and in the long term i.e. “we did that dance last week but I’ve forgotten half of it”. The music is fantastic. It is not bagpipe music but rather fiddle, keyboard and piano accordion, with the occasional double bass. CDs are used in class but throughout the year there are dances held on a grander scale with live music, men in kilts and ladies looking their best with a touch of tartan showing.

Our teacher is most encouraging towards all people, regardless of their level of ability. Steps are taught and demonstrated but the focus is to move through the formations and patterns and derive pleasure from the feel of the dance without being put off by fancy footwork. Soft comfortable shoes are the basic requirement. We break for a cup of tea and a chat during the evening and at some stage everyone lends a hand in the kitchen.

The RSCDS was formed in Edinburgh in 1923 and is still based there. Earlier than that, people were endeavouring to collect and preserve the traditional dances of the 19th and 20th centuries. The organisation was founded in order to standardise steps, formations and devise newer dances in the same vein. It has succeeded in making Scottish country dancing very popular around the world.

There are many videos available on YouTube and the RSCDS website. We also have our own website: www.boxhillscottishsociety.com

Why not come along to Hartwell Church of Christ Hall on any Tuesday evening during March to November at 7:30pm and try it for yourself?

THE Alamein Community Garden (ACG) means so many things to so many people. Established in the early 1980s by the Alamein Community

Committee (now the Alamein Neighbourhood & Learning Centre [ANLC]), the garden was the brainchild of local residents who saw a need for community members to have the chance to grow their own produce. The Camberwell Council gave permission for a Community Garden to be established in 1985 when the site was fenced and divided into plots. Sheds were erected, tools purchased, signs were put up and reportedly community interest was “at a high level” †.

In 1987, when there were 12 plots being worked by residents of the local public housing flats, it was reported that “The garden is very busy with people working often and has become a place to meet for a chat and the swapping of surplus vegetables”. Community beds were later established for the growing and sale of vegetables to raise money for the garden which was upgraded in 1989 and the small park in front of the garden established.

Today the garden is a thriving hive of activity. Eleven local gardeners enthusiastically tend plots; a volunteer gardener keeps the common area tidy and the ANLC maintains some the plots for the use of students enrolled in the Centre’s regular horticulture classes.

The garden also provides support for other gardening activities at Alamein. The Growing Alamein project involves the construction of fruit and vegie boxes in the Centre’s front garden, and the Alamein Gardening group meets fortnightly. Many of the gardeners have been involved in the Alamein Cultivating Connections program matching volunteers with older local residents to establish and maintain a vegie garden and sharing any resulting produce.

With the resurgence of interest in sustainability issues, local food production has become a popular and important pursuit. The ACG embodies the very essence of what is important in local communities – local residents working together and supporting each other to achieve positive outcomes.

For more information about the Alamein Community Garden and other activities, please contact Alamein Neighbourhood and Learning Centre on 9885 9401 or go to our website at www.alameinnlc.com.au

Community NoticesRecently a woman sought to have a Chinese-text Community Notice – the request was declined. Instead, ESL (English as a Second Language) now has its own heading. If you know people who need to learn English and want to become involved in the local community, please point them towards these classes. There are 15 listings.

We’ve just completed the major task of updating all CNs. About 50 redundant listings were removed. Bear in mind that the purpose of community notices is for readers to make contact, therefore contact details must be updated regularly.

Email [email protected] if you wish to resubmit a removed listing. Editor

PLACES of WORSHIP

PROBUS Clubs are for retired or semi-retired business or professional people. Each Probus Club is autonomous and endeavours to be simple in structure with minimal

cost to members; offices are staffed largely by volunteers with operating costs met by member contributions.

The Probus Club movement began in the United Kingdom in 1965, with two clubs created by members of Rotary Club. The Rotary District took up the scheme with the result that Rotary International, Britain and Ireland, published a leaflet encouraging other Rotary Clubs to do likewise.

The name ‘Probus’ was suggested by a member who took the first three letters from 'PROfessional and BUSiness'.

It had the advantage that it was a Latin word from which 'probity' is derived.

In 1974 Probus expanded into New Zealand and in 1976 to Australia. Although Probus membership has its greatest concentrations in the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand, clubs today exist in all parts of the world, including the United States, Belgium, India, South Africa and several other countries in Africa and Asia.

Regular meetings are held, usually monthly, consisting of a lunch followed by a guest speaker. Many clubs engage in sporting tournaments, have special interests groups, enjoy regular outings and travel at home and overseas.

By 2002, there were over 300 000 members in approximately 4000 Probus clubs worldwide. By 2014 there were around 2000 clubs in the UK alone. The Victorian Probus website indicates membership is open to retired ‘over 55s’ with the purpose of ‘fellowship, friendship and fun’.

Check out the Probus Clubs on the next page, where 26 separate clubs within our distribution area are listed.
