The 2014 Annual Farmers’ Appreciation Dinner on June 19th at the Hustler Exhibit Hall was a good time!
Holly Berry, NL Chamber Vice President, delivered the opening remarks and introduced keynote speaker Ben Brancel. Brancel is Wisconsin’s Secretary of Agri-culture, Trade, and Consumer Protection, and his speech included the local impact of global export reg-ulations and the tremendous rate of agricultural tech-nological advances.
Wisconsin State Representative, Edward Brooks (R), was also in attendance.
This event is dedicated to all of our area’s hard working farm families, and is well-sponsored by many community partners. Thank you to this year’s generous contribu-tors, who’s gifts make this event possible. We encourage you to patronize them.

Relay for Life of Juneau County
Ccomes to Mauston July 25, 26
The American Cancer Society’s 2014 Relay for Life of Juneau
County will be held at the Mauston High School track complex
on Friday, July 25 and Saturday, July 26. Teams are made up of
eight to 15 members who take turns walking the track through-
out the night, symbolizing the fact that cancer never sleeps.
Relay activities begin at 4:30 pm on Friday with a survivor recep-
tion. Registration, basket and event raffles, mission infor-
mation, and luminaria sales open at 5 pm. The traditional
“Celebrate” (opening) ceremony will begin at 6 pm,
“Remember” (luminaria) ceremony will be held at 10 pm, and
“Fight Back” (closing) ceremony held at 9 am. The Mauston
Lions and Lioness groups will be serving their annual pancake
breakfast Saturday morning from 6 to 9 am. The “Fight Back”
ceremony will be held at 9 am, and will include an event wrap-
up and the announcement of basket and event raffle winners.
The American Cancer Society provides a number of great
initiatives for Juneau County residents. Look Good…Feel
Better® is a program that helps women combat the appearance-
related side effects of cancer treatments. The American Cancer
Society also offers stays at Hope Lodge in Marshfield and Roch-
ester, with no cost to the patient or family. All of these services
can be accessed through the Cancer Resource Network at
www.cancer.org or by calling toll-free to 1-800-227-2345.
These are just some of the ways the dollars raised by this Relay
directly return to Juneau County.
For further information about the Relay for Life of Juneau
County, contact event chair, Lisa Amerman, at 608-548-1800, or
send an e-mail to [email protected]. You can also
contact the American Cancer Society Staff Partner, Stephanie
Groshek, at 404-417-8004 or [email protected].
New Lisbon Schools Superintendent, Dennis Birr, shares his thoughts of spring...
There are a lot of fun events to finish the year at every school district in Wiscon-sin. New Lisbon is no exception. April 12th is Prom. Fine Arts Night is April 15th. We are off school Good Friday and Monday and re-turn Tuesday April 22nd. May 3 is State Solo & Ensemble. May 13th the spring band con-cert. May 15th is our K-12 service learning day where students spend the afternoon doing community based projects. May 21st is the academic achievement/scholarship night. Graduation is scheduled for May 30th at 8:00. The last day for students is June 5th and summer school will start right away on Monday June 9th.
I enjoy visiting some of classes to see some of the great educational opportunities hap-pening for our students. I would like to share a few of them with you:
Eighteen New Lisbon students competed in the local Modern Woodman Speech Contest. The contest was judged by Lin-da Pudenz and Jayne Turner.
Dawn Barranco's freshman English class held their poetry reading coffee house.
Stephanie Shankle shared her experienc-es at the Helbing ranch in South Africa with Debby Hansen's JH social studies classes.
Mike Stoughtenger introduced his Biog-raphy Final Four challenge.
Dan Sagert's first graders used a spread-sheet to put words in alphabetical or-der.
We had a great turnout for the Music department's spaghetti supper and The Cat's Pajamas performance.
Thanks to Leah Faber and all those who helped with the 8th Grade-Faculty games. They raised almost $3000.
The Visual Arts Classic regional competi-tion was held. A number of students had great showings and will be headed to the state competition on April 11th. The group is led by Terri Fish and Cindy Costello.
The National Honor Society held their annual induction ceremony.
