The first summer I was here we did a book study on Crazy Love by Francis Chan. The book is about us living radically transformed lives in response to the gospel and God’s love. It tells stories of people who lived lives as radical, world changing disciples. Crazy Love is one of my favorite books, and one that has influenced me more than most others. I have read it multiple times. I have given out dozens of copies of it. I have taught on it at two churches. And I have seen

others’ lives changed as a result of reading it.

Francis Chan is one of a group of pastors/authors known as The New Radicals. They talk about following Jesus in radical ways. Sell everything you have. Go to a foreign country. Quit your high paying job and work with/for the disenfranchised. Be a world changer. That last one probably sums up the movement best: be a world changer. All of this sounds great, if not exhausting. And it is all explained as being radical in our eyes, but as being the plain expectation of Jesus from his teachings.

Last week I started reading a book called Ordinary by Michael Horton. Horton has been another influential author in my life. His books Christless Christianity and The Gospel Driven Life are excellent reads that I would commend to anyone. This latest book seems to be a response to the New Radical view of Christianity. Having read Ordinary, I don’t believe he is responding directly to specific individuals. It isn’t an attack on anyone, or a direct critique of a specific person’s work (though the cover of the book looks identical to David Platt’s book Radical, with the title being exactly opposite).

What Ordinary is, is a book that reminds us about a simple reality of Christian history: that the vast majority of Christians for the last two thousand years have been ordinary people, living ordinary lives, looking to love and serve their God through the ordinary means with which he has blessed them. For example, Horton speaks of a woman who spent so much time trying to be a “world changer” that she lost sight of the most important role God had given her- to be a Christian wife and mother. She finally realized that, at this stage of her life, her radical devotion to the Lord was to be a godly spouse and to make sure that her kids are raised in the knowledge and love of the Lord. Too often we are made to feel guilty as if that isn’t enough. As a preacher, I may be guilty of making people feel that way at times. But the reality is, Jesus didn’t call most of us to sell all that we have and move to Africa. He didn’t call most of us to be Evangelists, great reformers of the Church, top theologians or apologists of our time, or miraculous faith healers.

Some people are definitely called to those radical things. My relationship with the people of Ethiopia makes it easy for me to see myself living there at some point in my life. I don’t know that I will, but I realize that I certainly could. Some people are called to leave their teaching job in a nice suburban district with lots of resources and kids who love to be in school in order to go to an inner city school with a less than 50% literacy rate in order to serve the least of these. at 6:30pm. (The Friday study that meets at noon will resume when the next study

begins.) For more information, please contact Wendy Fought or Carolyn Strauss.

Spring Event - English High Tea. We are currently planning a high tea for

Saturday, May 2, which will include a history of women in the Anglican Church,

and how we are now part of that living history. More information to follow soon.

Women’s Retreat. Mark your calendars for a Women’s Retreat, September 11th and 12th, at Elvyn Lea

Lodge, a retreat center in Walloon Lake. Our theme is “Spirit of the Living God, Fall Afresh on Me.”

We will be doing a Beth Moore simulcast on Saturday, September 12th. The cost will be approximately

$100, which includes lodging, meals and the cost of the simulcast.

INREACH MINISTRY The purpose of this ministry is to assist our fellow parishioners who may be in need of comfort after a surgery, illness, or to those who are shut-in. We will be happy to provide meals, phone calls, cards and/or visits. Our prayer is that we are able to offer that extra care, comfort and a bit of respite to those who are caring for their loved ones. Everyone needs a helping hand from time to time, and we would like to be yours. There are several ways you can participate in this ministry. We are in need of people to provide the following: meals, telephone calls, visits and cards. Many hands make light work, so please volunteer!

radical thing. The Church happens to need Christians who aren’t foreign missionaries as much as it needs those who are. If we are all foreign missionaries, then there will be no one left to do the sending or to provide the support for those missionaries. The Church needs Christians teaching in nice, posh suburban schools as well as Christians teaching in the inner-city. We (as the Church) can’t sacrifice one group of people for the need to serve another.

Ordinary gives good guidelines for church leadership to map out a good and faithful plan of discipleship. It gives good, practical, and comforting guidance to us ordinary individuals that God may not be calling us to be super radical world changers, but that he might actually (and in fact, most likely does) want us to be the ordinary people that we are. If he wants something radical from us, he is capable of doing that through our ordinary, faithful lives. For example, Martin Luther didn’t wake up one morning and say, “I am going to be radical, take on Rome, and start the Protestant Reformation.” In fact, he simply saw a corruption that he didn’t think the Pope was aware of, tried to bring it to light, and ended up somewhat accidentally changing the world (though he certainly was a willing participant once he realized what was happening).

I highly encourage for everyone to read this book. I have highlighted a significant portion of the book and so much of it just hits me right between the eyes. I think Ordinary will go down as one of my favorite books, right alongside Crazy Love.
