Prof. Dr. Paresh ShethLecture on CSR.

I believe CSR and Sustainability is the answer to this extremely divided world economy which excludes a majority from achieving their true potential. CSR can bring in a sense of responsibility to the corporates so that they can work for the society as a whole and not only for their bottom lines. CSR education will surely bring this accountability to the leaders of tomorrow.

There is no other way that a business can continue to prosper if Corporate Social Responsibility is not in its DNA. If a business is to flourish, it is in its interest that the members of society in which it is operating, are able to buy its goods and services. Therefore, it is in the interest of the business that the members of society are continually developed and supported so that they are in the position to be its customers. Any support that a business puts in for the wellbeing of society and its financial empowerment will ultimately benefit its growth. I call it Enlightened Self Interest.

  • Sustainability In the 1980s, the Brundtland Commission, a UN investigative body, defined sustainability as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs

WalmartWal-Mart issued an edict to its distributors demanding that they reduce their packaging by 5%. As a result, the retail giant is now saving $3.4 billion a year in waste disposal costs

MichelinThe Michelin tyre company has moved into selling the performance of truck tyres rather than just tyres, because it can produce a long-life tyre that's easy to re-tread, thereby earning a higher profit. If a re-threadable tyre sold as a performance service can travel twice the distance (e.g. the distance the tyre can travel is sold rather than the tyre itself with the tyre remaining under the control of the company), the company earns more money; whereas, if it produces and sells a longer-distance tyre, the buyer would probably not pay the higher price involved (to pay for R&D and disposal costs) and company turnover would decrease.

Collins & Aikman: Profits from recyclingThe Collins & Aikman Floor covering company (now part of theTandus Group) is widely considered to be the first business in the carpet industry to take the closed-loop plunge by collecting and breaking down old carpets into material for new carpets. This reduced the company's raw material costs and allowed Collins & Aikmanto enjoy double-digit growth in both revenues and profits when the entirecarpet industry was growing at about 4% a year. Most carpet-manufacturing processes require approximately one kilogram off ossil fuel to make about half a kilogram of carpet material, and because carpetscan take up to 20,000 years or more to decompose. The recycling program naturally resulted in major contribution to a sustainable development.

A company known as Union Miniere du Haut Katanga was in the business of mining rich mineral resources of Belgium's colony in the Congo. The company mined copper, tin, cobalt and precious metals, and shipped them to its silver and lead refineries in the Hoboken section of Antwerp. This business took a spiralling hit when Union Miniere's assets in central Africa were seized by the government of Zaire in 1968, forcing the company to seek new mines. The company, now called Umicore, is still mining and refining but instead of extracting metals from the earth, it recovers them from the discards of the industrial economy: electronic waste, catalytic converters, rechargeable batteries, and residues from copper and zinc smelters. The Hoboken refineries have been completely changed, and in their place is what Umicore calls the world's most advanced,

  • largest (116 hectares) and cleanest precious and specialty metals refining, recycling and recovery operation.

Umicore has transformed from a traditional mining company into an innovative technology firm that focuses on clean technologies, including emission-control catalysts, materials for rechargeable batteries and photovoltaic, and advanced recycling.

Products: About one in three of the world's cars are equipped with a Umicore catalytic converter, and about one in four of the world's laptops and mobile phones have Umicore materials in their batteries.

UMICORE VISION 2015The Vision 2015 refers to innovation as a differentiator for success in all areas

    Achievements2002 Turnover: 1 B Euro2010 Turnover: 10 B Euro2014 Turnover: 13 Euro

The company devised a new strategy intended to capitalize on four global megatrends: resource scarcity, electrified transportation, clean energy production and storage, and cleaner air.

Umicore now operates four business units:Catalysis: Its catalysts reduce pollution from cars and trucks powered by internal combustion engines. Government air pollution standards, which are becoming stricter, help drive growth.Energy materials: These are engineered materials derived from cobalt, germanium and nickel that find their way into products like rechargeable batteries and photo voltaics.Performance materials: These are materials derived from zinc, platinum and other metals that are used in building products, fertilizer and fibreglass production.Recycling: The company recovers precious and non-ferrous metals from complex waste streams, including industrial, electronic and consumer waste. This business, too, has been driven by regulation, particularly in the EU, where industries are required to take back and recycle e-waste.

Recycling is a very efficient way to produce metals, says the company, highlighting the benefits of closing the materials loop. From 50,000 mobile phones around three tons of material, excluding batteries Umicore is able to recycle around one kilogram of gold, 10 kilograms of silver, 400 grams of palladium and 420 kilograms of copper. By contrast, extracting one kilogram of gold from a mine below the ground requires the removal of 200 tons of rock.

As the champion of sustainability at Umicore, I am very happy to see that sustainability is embedded in our organization. If affects choices in day-to-day decisions. It is part of our DNA .Marc Grynberg, CEO of Umicore

  • CSR is an opportunity to transform and work on every aspect of the value chain with an objective to reduce costs and increase customer value at the same being environment friendly, supporting customer communities, maximizing benefits for employees and stake holders, and most importantly creating better and better products which are re-usable or recyclable through innovation or otherwise while using lesser and lesser natural resources.

This is also an opportunity to find alternate uses or user segments. Hence the terms CSR and sustainability go hand in hand both when combined and interlinked to business strategy resulting in sustainable development. Transparency and corporate governance are always 'a given' to run a successful business

Value Chain AnalysisA value chain is defined as the analysis of every activity performed at the company in an attempt to take raw materials/ inputs and add value for the customer. Such a value chain analysis is invariably performed by every corporate for its core business activities. In this model all the activities of a firm are grouped into two groups: primary and secondary activities. The primary activities in turn are classified as Inbound logistics, operations, outbound logistics, marketing & sales and finally services. The secondary activities in turn can be classified as procurement, technology development , human resource management and Infrastructure. Michael Porter says that once the two sets of activities are identified and the interlinkages established the next step is to identify the activities and linkages that create value to the firm. The factors that create and sustain the competitive advantage of a firm are called the cost or value drivers. It is logical to assume that maximum effort and resources of time, money and material must be put behind the cost\value drivers

I am a strong believer in value chain analysis and I think a value chain analysis with sustainability in mind is the right approach for any company while forming its business and sustainability strategy. " The two most common questions while performing a value chain analysis are 1) how can we reduce cost in this activity. 2) how do we add further value for the customer and charge a premium. The third question which I suggest is how do we rate this activity in terms of CSR and sustainability taking all aspects in to consideration including environment, share holders, community etc as mentioned earlier." This would be the right way to form a CSR / sustainability strategy intertwined with the business strategy

When a corporate uses the above to define its CSR / Sustainability strategy, the result is usually an obvious high rate of growth in top line and bottom line, it has also been observed that corporates able to integrate their CSR & Sustainability strategy within their business model are rewarded by investors and stakeholders though a much higher market cap

If the above is so obvious, why is it that so few corporates are able to integrate their business strategy with sustainable development strategy?
