TRANSCRIPT
Welcome to the New Year. We’ve just had many participants complete
their mentoring year under a December 31 deadline. Congratulations
to all, and please accept our thanks to the many mentors who’ve
volunteered to welcome new lawyers to the profession.
One New Lawyer nearing completion recently shared a story. She was
faced with the prospect of inheriting some most difficult clients, when
she heard the voice of her mentor in her head saying, “Never ever
take on a client out of desperation. You should be screening your
clients every bit as carefully as they should be screening you.” She
declined these particular clients, and is now aware that she may have
saved herself considerable trouble in doing so. Again, we thank
Oregon’s impressive team of mentors who are providing a guiding
hand to our newest bar members as they make the transition to a
successful law practice.
Meanwhile, any mentors wishing to put themselves on a “hold”
status for new matches after completing their current commitment,

“One or two weeks prior to our pre-‐scheduled meetings, I emailed my
mentor a reminder along with a suggested agenda. The proposed
agenda usually included one or two items from the New Lawyer
Mentoring Program Manual, such as Professionalism or Law Office
Management. For the Required Practice Area Activities, I suggested two
or three alternatives relevant to my current projects and asked my
mentor to pick one. Developing an agenda in advance helped us craft
relevant meetings and efficiently tick off mentoring plan requirements.”
~ Jim Yocom, Two Rivers Law, Portland
"In addition to my "official" mentee, I have an e-‐address list of other
young attorneys who ask questions and enjoy guidance. A most
interesting thing I have noticed is how often their conversations are
horizontal, among themselves, before they go vertical and ask the
"seasoned master." Developing this kind of a peer-‐to-‐peer relationship
makes learning the practice of law much easier. In addition, when we
see something of legal interest, those on my Mentee List will group-‐
mail it, saving a copy in their Mentor folder."
~ John “Jack” Lundeen, Private Practice, Lake Oswego

For those who have enrolled, and not yet received a mentor, please
note that assignments continue to be made weekly, though they are
slower than our ideal target. As more mentors finish up current roles
and become available we continue to pick up the pace. While you are
awaiting an assignment, you are under no compliance deadlines.
Deadlines are only assigned once a mentor match is announced. It is
also a good idea to log onto your Enrollment Survey and update your
Area of Law interests, should they change. This will assist with a more
successful matching process.

assignment, you are under no regulatory
