Learn the history of the museum. The Burlington County Prison Museum is a National Historic Landmark located in the heart of historic Mount Holly, New Jersey. Designed by Robert Mills, America’s first native-born and trained architect, the Burlington County Prison was completed in 1811. This building was a prison for 154 years. The Winterfest Ice Skating Rink at Cooper River Park will be open Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. On Saturdays and Sundays, the rink will be open from noon to 10 p.m. Children 12 years of age and younger will be admitted onto the ice for free. There is a $4.00 admission fee for those 13 years and older and a $3.00 skate rental fee. There is plenty of free parking in lots to either side of the stadium.

Best Place to Go Sledding

Ice Fishing

Ice fishing is a favorite winter activity for many Sussex County residents. It offers a wonderful way for families to get together and enjoy the fresh air while engaging in a little sport. Sussex County has numerous lakes for families to spend the day ice fishing. They include Lake Hopatcong, Cranberry Lake, Jefferson Lake, Lake Aeroflex, Lake Musconetcong, Swartswood Lakes and Lake Wawayanda.

Lusscroft Farms

Lusscroft Farms is a gorgeous historic farm that contains 23 buildings including the Outlook Lodge, Turner Mansion, the dairy barn and various farm structures. Lusscroft Farms offers a 5 mile trail network through grassland, wetland habitats and hardwood forest perfect for hiking. Trails range from beginner to advanced levels, and it is open year-round. High Point State Park

High Point State Park is one of the most beautiful and scenic parks NJ has to offer. The winter is no exception. In the winter, High Point offers families the opportunity to enjoy cross country skiing and snowshoeing with gorgeous views. Half-day, full day and season passes are available for a reasonable rate. Warinanco Park’s indoor/outdoor Ice Rink

No other local rinks can match the atmosphere of Warinanco Park’s indoor/outdoor ice rink. It’s got a roaring fireplace inside and the rink is outdoor but covered. It’s only open seasonally so get out those skates and show your skating stuff! Located at Union County Administration Building, 10 Elizabethtown Plaza in Elizabeth. (908) 527-4000

William Miller Sperry Observatory

A hidden treasure in Union County is the William Miller Sperry Observatory. Join them on Friday evenings and check out the night skies along with trained observers there to assist you. Kenilworth’s Kidz Village

One of our favorite rainy/cold day places is Kenilworth’s Kidz Village. Admission includes playtime on an indoor climbing structure, in pretend play rooms, and an arcade. Washington Movie Theater

If you are looking to introduce your children to history, take them to visit and watch a movie at The Washington Movie Theater. Not only will they experience what people first did when theaters open, they will be helping to save the theater which is currently in danger of being torn down. The theater was begun in 1928 and still stands in its original state today. With inexpensive shows and concerts, this theater has been present in the community for many years is a landmark for many who have lived and currently live in the community. This winter, experience Chocolate! Visitors to Chocolate: The Exhibition will explore the plant, the products, the history, and the culture of chocolate through the lenses of botany and ecology, anthropology and economics, conservation and popular culture. Winterfest at Blue Cross RiverRinkThe Delaware River Waterfront Corporation has teamed up with some great Philadelphia partners to transform Penn’s Landing into a seasonal riverfront park featuring ice skating, a holiday light show, retail market, and food and drinks for all ages to enjoy. We had a chance to visit the Blue Cross RiverRink during the Visit Philly Holiday Party. What a magical night it was! We skated, we played, we roasted marshmallows, and cuddled together under blankets.
