Dear Friend:

This was the fifty-ninth summer for the New Jersey YMHA- YWHA Camps - and it was my twenty-ninth. It was also my last summer since I will be shortly retiring.

The season of 1978 which we just experienced together was a grand "going away" present - - it was such a good year!All of us who were lucky enough to be at the New Jersey 'Y'Camps this past summer will long remember it. It is just great to have this year book to help remind all of us of this special time in our lives. Such good memories should stay!

And next year will be another great year! Joe Schwartz, Joel Simon and David Margolis - and all of the rest of the camp staff - are making wonderful plans for what will be a most exciting and happy season in 1979.

The camp family joins me in taking this opportunity to wish you and your family a happy and healthy New Year.

LONG LAKE CAMP served campers from 7 to 10 years of age, who were housed and organized in six divisions. The program for this camp dealt with making a happy introduction to camping and to independent living away from the familiar home environment.

Solomon Division had a lot to cheer about in July: Discovery night and intrigue, the searchfor Blackbeard the Pirate, body painting, blueberry muffins, blueberry smash, cops and robbers night, Ghost Town, soccer league, relay races and kickball games. These all helped make Solomon a great division in Long Lake Camp. Three cheers for the Solomon Gang, yah, yah, yah!

August

August was a great month: Superhero Night, Leprachaun Night, Settlers Night, capture the flag,soccer league, overnights and rollerskating. These made August a month to remember! BEEP, BEEP, UNGOWA, SOLOMON'S GOT THE POWER. More power to you, men of Solomon - you're great!!!!!

Abraham Division jumped into action in July with Crazy Olympics Night as their first, major divisional. Our other major divisionals for the month were English Pub Night, Grease Night, and Peanuts Night. Other highlights of the month included our rainy overnights, sports nights, surprise auction, games of GA GA and our trip to Ghost Town - truly good times to remember!!!!

August

ABRAHAM

August was a fun-filled month for the men of Abe. Abe men hiked around the lake, played soft ball, went on scavenger hunts, did pioneering projects - - divisional sings and a counselor hunt. Our Oneg Shabbat was based on Jewish Hope. Other major divisionals were Casino Night, Super-hero Night, Talent Night, and Man from Atlantis Night. The summer was made great by counselors and great campers - all working together in a special way for a memorable summer.

The Sarah summer started out with our pajama party and continued with D.J. hikes and the talent shows, our trip to Ghost Town, Israeli Day and the Sarah Divisionals: Hillbilly Night, adesigner fashion show, the four season birthday party. The girls who did their best acting in "Annie," the Tropical Fiesta Carnival with Cheryl dressed up in a hula skirt. A great July!!!!

The August Sarah Girls moved right on with our floating picnicffinding Sam's treasure, our counselor hunt, sing downs, wide world of sports, lazy day breakfast and roller skating. How about Walt Disney Night, Ugly Counselor Night, Movie Star Night, Academy Award Night, British Day and our exercising to "Chicken Fat." August was truly special: "Friends, Friends - ALWAYS!

July was a terrific, Moses month. First the initiation, that first Friday night service, the soccer league, and the overnights. The major divisionals: Casino Night, Star Wars Night, Pirate Night, and Super-hero Night. There were special days: Israeli Day, July 4th, Carnival and the trip to Ghost Town. All in all, July was a jam-packed month for the Moses Men.

August

August was another terrific, Moses month. We started with Gangster Night, followed by Espionage Night and Chivalry Night. There were: The trip to Ghost Town, the hikes around the lake and up Sugar-loaf Mountain, the Tisha B'av Commemoration and British Day. All in all it was a great month and a great summer for the Moses Men. Here's to a great year - ENJOY!

We kept out raids and ate ice cream; And swept to keep the cabin clean. Olympic race and smiling face; Carnival, caravan and dancina Pace. Counselors wrapped like mummies tight; Surprise glowing "Hallelujah" bright. Rapping with Rabbi Dan; singing along to "Macho Man". Horseback trail, WNJY; The questionaire and OD nearby. DOYOT choice and buddy swim; Abi's full of vigor and vim.

Yesterday, the bus and "all out" meant swim and kickball. Yesterday was Ghost Town, Water Carni­val or Israeli Day. Yesterday we won the "Clean Bunk Award" on Bunk Day. Yesterday was the College Bowl or Campfire Banquet or Den and Gymnastics awards. Yesterday was Western Day with our friends. We cheered, sang, danced, hiked, laughed and loved it. Abigail, we miss you so!

LEAH

Leah was fun because of the activities and because you got choices. The food was better than I expected. I really learned alot in instructional swim, and free swim was fun. I liked the trips that we had like Grease, Roller Skating and Promise Land. The carnival was fun too. But visiting day was the best! One of the best parts of camp was my counselor. She was so nice. Another part was the activities like dancing, drama, judo, and studio. Camp was really fun!

The camp here is nice but the problem is the weather. In Leah, it rains one day and the next day it is cold. The bunks here are big. We have inspection every morning. Everybody has a job -- sweep, sinks, inspectors, aarbage, toilet, except the person who has the day off. We have a tether ball court. We have cookouts in front of Leah. The best part of camp is the trips like Ghost Town and Charlies. We really wish that the fun never had to end for us at camp Nah-Jee-Wah.

I think camp is A-OK; And I wish it is here that I could stay; The fishing here is great, great, great; But you never find guite enough bait. Our division is very clean; And we are very keen;We never cheat; So all others we beat. When somebody manages to get a hit; We sit and think and use our wit; Asher division is really neat; Join us and you will have a treat. Yea Asher Division!

Asher Division is very nice,Have you been there once or twice? The kids here are best, Better than the rest. We have bunks 26 and 27, But their bunks don't look like heaven. Then we have 28 and 29, And everybody is pretty fine. 30 and 31, Think that they are number one. But 32, Has the best crew! Asher has the best athletes by a mile, We would win in class and style. For the end of my poem that I have written here today, I will finish by saying that Asher Division is A - O.K.!!

Dear Secret Pal-- Naomi in August was really great. We did a lot of fun things. We went on atrip to Ghost Town, had a water carnival, a special Israeli Day and a rootin' tootin' Western Day. But most important of all, I made a lot of good friends and found my Secret Pal Naomi Girl*

July certainly had a musical flavor in Dan. Having stunned the camp with a rousing divisional song, Dan relived Beatlemania with a medley of music, banners, and posters. By visiting day, NJW had toasted Danmania. In sport as well as song Dan made some exciting changes. While off the athletic field the division was much in demand for co-ed evening programs. The camp graduation prom will be rememberedd for some time to come. July has been a memorable month for the lucky Dan campers.

August

August was a month of achievement for Division Dan. The all-star softball team, the soccer team, and Dan's contributions on stage stirred and stunned Uah-Jee-Wah. One Shabbot evening our Oneg proved a fitting role for the end of a magnificent- summer. Havinq performed with distinction during the summer Dan Division went on to show that "Dan" means not only a fine collection of individual talent but also a group which plays and works toaether. Dan made its mark on NJW-78.

"Hannah, Hannah #1.." Do you remember that song? How we screamed it out at the dinner table! We will never forget the campout. What fun the carnival was! The counselors were more than just counselors, they were our friends. The DH was always ready to cope with any problem that came up. The activities were great! Remember the Olympics and the film "Grease". This July was the best because almost everything was co-ed. "So cheer and sing out loud, Hannah girls are mighty proud."

August was a great month for the girls. We went on trips to Charlies, Ghost Town, and Milford Beach. Our evenings were filled with fun, games, and more than a little music. We had prom night a Halloween Disco, Game-O-Rama, DOYOT, clubs and cookouts, treasure hunts and a banguet. e a a most successful overnight. 'We ate delicious pancakes and picked berries. Hannah is # one.

Levi, Levi we're the best..July was a very interesting and exciting month for all in Levi. We all learned a areat deal about other peoples cultures. Remember our trip to the film "Grease" as well as our own Greaser night? We had an exciting counselor hunt with our sister division Hannah. Our trip to Promise Land proved to be exciting and all ventured into the lake. During this years NJW Gone Show Levi captured first and second place with two very talented musicians. Levi-We love you!

August

LEVI

August brought auite a few changes to Division Levi. Besides losing our July friends and adding new faces to the qroup, the biggest change was being made in our move down the Levi hill from our tents to bunks. Abigail Lawn became Levi Estates South and we even had to adjust to a female Senior Counselor. All in All August was a terrific month for the boys of Levi. We had the Water Carnival and the Ghost Town trip topped off by our Hawaiian Cookout with sister division Hannah.

Milford, Pennsylvania

CEDAR LAKE CAMP served campers from 12 to 15 years of age who were divided into eight divisions for program de­velopment. Con­tinuation of de­velopment of skills in arts and crafts, athletics and water sports and outdoor livina was an ob- iective along with greater attention to cultural inter­ests and social values. Physical, intellectual and social challenges tried to meet the increasing personal potential of this age group. Sensible boy-girl relation­ships were a nat­ural part of camp.

July was a banner month for Miriam division. If you just think back to all those pleasant memories; the "Gong Show" for our non talents and "Gypsy" for our real talents; Hillbilly night with our genuine haystack; the roller coaster at Ghost Town; the rained-out overnight; dressing up as hippies and greasers; our final night cook-out on the lake; and our Arabs and Israelis at the Sabbath Oneg. We really had something for everyone. Miriam was a great place to be in July.

Miriam girls in August had so much enthusiasm, it was hard to keep them still. Do you remember the counselor and treasure hunts, the two canoe trips, the overnight, our out-of-camp trip to Ghost Town, the nature hikes, our Karen Ami bake sale, and our fabulous banquet. With all we did it's amazing that our girls were still able to participate in all aspects of the camp show "Bells Are Ringing". Without Miriam there would be no props. Miriam is truly CLC's best!

Joseph in July was a new and excitinq expereince. We made new friends and learned new skills.Our canoe trips down the Delaware and the bunk overnights taught us to live outdoors. There was plenty of fun playing British Bullfrog, capture the flag, and "Almost Anything Goes". We had the honor of presenting the first Shabbat Oneg (Do you remember "No man is an Island"). The all-camp show "Gypsy" was unforgettable. But most of all, Joseph was good times, friends, and fond memories.

August

For Joseph August was an exciting month. Despite the weather we had good times— swimming in the rain, mud soccer and Schmutz! Special trips to Ghost Town, conoeina down the Delaware, and visits to Pinchot Falls made for a memorable summer. We had a terrific Olympics and the Purim Carnival was certainly somethinq special. We enjoyed "Bells Are Ringing" both as spectators and as participants. The friends we made in Joseph division will always remind us of the great '78 summer.

I The month of July was exciting for the Hadassah girls. Our big events included "Greaser Night" | and"Cartoon Character Night". We showed our talents with an "Untalent Show", and we gave a| beautiful Oneg of song and dance one glorious Friday night. Despite the rain it was beautiful.

The Hadassah Hellraisers struck once again in August. There was "Punk Rock Night", a Computer Dating Service, and the banquet and Prom. A fun time for all. And who will ever forget the Hadassah-Judah Service? Remember, this is the first day of the rest of your life.

July was a very busy month for Judah Division. The daily schedule was packed with such activities as swim, tennis, nature, boating, arts and crafts, and pioneering. But don't forget the specials I Do you remember the competition in sports, our divisional co-eds, the scavenger hunt dance and our all-star athletic program. Ghost Town capped the summer and what an exciting summer it was.

JuDAH

August offered many new and varied experiences for the Judah camper. August began with six days of rain and we learned to play mud soccer, mud softball, and mud volleyball. Then the sun came out and normal activities began. There was our super athletic program, the August play "Bells are Ringing", arts and crafts, our oneg and service, Olympics, Ghost Town, and our fantastic three day, two night canoe trip. This, along with socials and daily activities, led to a fun-filled summer.

For Esther, July said goodbye almost as fast as we greeted her. How can we forget our first real social? What about the campfire for the upper camp? Was it humiliation or hysteria we felt when Deborah got docked and Simeon forgot to come? Ghost Town was a blast, as usual. Do you remember when Jodi was D.H. and Cheryl was S.C.? The overnight was a complete success and sleeping under the stars really made some pleasant and happy campers. We can't forqet the incredible "Gypsy".Well, friends of the devel, Lucky 13, and "Bunk 9" were the areatest-until our next month together.

Spirits were high as Esther entered the month of August. Olympics were rained on, but spirits were not dampened. Mudfights were the rage and all had great fum. Stanley Hawkins night (Sadie Hawkins backwards) was a barrel of laughs. But girls, I must say we did a better job of chasing than theguys did. The overnight and canoe trip sparked the outdoor spirit in us all. A visit to Ghost Town and the movie "Funny Girl" added to our summer fun. August was filled with good times for all.

The month of July was a very exciting one for Reuben. With a large percentage of the division involved in the camp show, it was surprising we still had time and energy to have three great socials-from Punk to Sadie Hawkins night. A super excursion to Ghost Town, canoe trips, over- niahts and a very exciting mini-olympic helped fill July with action and memories. Changeover day was full of tears and saying goodbyes after a memorable month of fun and total friendship.

REUBEN

The month of August was a great month for Reuben. A large contingent of Reuben campers were in- vo ved in Bells are Ringing". We had two memorable co-ed socials, a very exciting August Olympics,

an exhausting trip to Ghost Town. Our oneg on the creation of the State of Israel was very moving. The final carnival brought an exciting climax to this eventful momth. The catalyst for all ese energetic activities was fired by a terrific bunch of campers to make an unforgettable summer.

Between our daily duties of showering, blowdryingf and boy watching, we made time to send a delegation to Camp Tel-Yehuda and to produce a moving and emotional Oneg on the topic of Soviet Jewry. We charmed the qentlemen of Simeon at our English Tea Party and went into an uproar over Arlene's blow dryer spoof. Deborah girls led the way in "Gypsy"; we went to Ghost Town, visited TAC, and had a Greaser Night— John Travolta beware! Although it seemed that we only lived for our pagoda time, July was a good, fun-packed month.

August

After a wet start August brightened and Deborah was off and running. Do you remember the Olympics, the cc*noe trip, Ghost Town and the carnival? What about camper-counselor day, the divisional cook- out with Simeon, our "Rap with the Rabbi", and the visit to TAC? There were enjoyable co-ed after­noon socials with games, music and food as well as hikes to Pinchot Falls, softball, and marsh- mellow cookouts. Finally, Deborah's contribution to the play was as good as always, if not better!

Simeon had a great July while especially enjoying a visit to Ghost Town, a hike to Pinchot Falls, and a Woody Allen movie. The 50's night provided many an outlet for Simeon's Greaser fantasies, and jiving talents. Other activities included a successful co-ed treasure hunt, a well received Oneg (also with Deborah), and an afternoon at TAC. A memorable summer was certainly had by all.

Simeon certainly made full use of the good weather we had during August. We certainly enjoyed a day at Ghost Town, a trip to Tac, which culminated in an unfortunate defeat at softball, a canoe trip and various hikes. Major divisionals with Deborah included a counselor hunt, a rock night, and a barbecue. Simeon provided many of the actors involved in the play. We had a great August!

August

TAC in '78 was at its best. The campers were just great; involved, spirited, and dedicated to making TAC live up to its full potential. The programs at TAC were not only creative and varied, but were also fabulous and unforgettable fun. Who could forget our great Boys Beauty Contest, Worst Dress Nite, Saturday Nite Live I & II, or that super Dance Marathon which lasted through the night and raised over $100 for Karen Ami! And what about our special Tisha B'av program on the Holocaust and our Soviet Jewry program. The list goes on and on ending with our Banquets.On top of all these great programs we had our trips...fantastic excursions to Washington, D.C.& Boston, Hershey Park and Cornell University; bike trips to Milford and canoe trips down the Delaware; and finally, our memorable outing to Camp Masad for intercamp sports (remember that thrilling girls volleyball match!). What about the TAC waterfront program...this year we acquired a whole fleet of playaks, surfboards and innertubes which converted our lake into a new and incredible fun attraction. Opening the Day Camp programs to TAC I campers was a huge success and the parents of the Milford and Matamoras children enrolled were ever so pleased.The St. Francis Hospital Volunteer program and the CIT program were also very successful this summer. Our play was initiated and supervised by campers. The summer was indeed outstanding!
