Chair’s Message — Our Structure
Carefully, with commitment and endurance, our predecessors forged a strong foundation for our Section. As with any structure, the years have had their effects on personnel and membership commitments. Many things have changed since our structure was formed, due to migration, loss of sev-eral prominent companies, outsourcing, and relocation of key industries —the perfect storm for any organization. However depressed that period may now seem, there were many smaller businesses at that time that were doing well in the tri-state area, and are still doing well at present. Members like Jerry Cotter, Harry Ebert, Gus Manz and others whom I was not fortunate enough to have known, stepped up to the plate and contributed greatly to the success of the NJ Section. We must also remember and recognize the trio of Bud, Bill & Doc — Bud Peterson, Bill Scarince and Doc Winsor — for their valuable contributions, and for weathering storm after storm, to leave us in very good standing. Al Fleury; Jim Dolan; Ken Stockton, Bob Petrone, Vince Murray, Gus Manz, George Sheehan, Steve Dagnall, Seann Bradley, Bill Dallas, Dave Griep, Dennis Mead and others also deserve recognition for bridging the gap between the us and our predecessors to strengthen the Section. We owe thanks to these individuals that we still are able to meet every third Tues-day between September and May (excluding December) for Executive Meetings, Membership Dinners and Technical Presentations, and to pro-vide members with Professional Development Hours for attending. As we look toward the future, Paul Lenox, Eric Dolan and Don Smith are major players stepping up to the plate at this moment, and I have no doubt that they will have amazing batting averages season after season. But, what good is the team without the support of a good defense? Jerry Cotter, Harry Ebert and Gus Manz are still gifted players. Bud, Bill and Doc were gifted players as well. Time has taken its toll on our Section; but with our combined individual talents, we can harness our knowledge and

experience to commit to encouraging more young, tal-ented individuals to join and continue to strengthen our Section. The NJ Section is still strong, but as good stew-ards, we must consider scouting and recruitment as a vital part of our ongoing plans if we want to sustain a consis-tent drive as a strong and vital Section into the future. Undoubtedly, there will be stormy weather ahead, and we as trustees must fortify our structure with an array

The Top FiveQuestions aboutHard Hats Conclusion
Note: This Series began in the January, 2013 issue. View it on the NJ Section website.
Question #4 Can I paint the shell of my hard hat?
MSA V-Gard: “Never paint a V-Gard helmet. Paint may attack and damage the helmet’s shell, thereby reducing the degree of protection originally provided.”
Bullard: Question not specifically addressed on their web site.
North/Fibre-Metal: “Do not paint … without the written permission of North Safety Products. Paint can at-tack the shell and cause degrada-tion…”
Question #5 Can I put stickers on my hard hat?
MSA V-Gard: “It is permissible to use pressure-sensitive stickers or tape with self-adhesive backing AS LONG AS THEY ARE NOT closer than 1/2 inch from the edge of the helmet. According to MSA’s testing,
such stickers or tape in such a loca-tion will not affect the burn through (i.e. dielectric classification) or the structure of an MSA helmet. How-ever, because it is impossible for us to test all pressure-sensitive adhe-sives, caution should still be taken when making use of such materials. Also, be sure that when these are applied that you are no covering any damage on the helmet.”
Bullard: “The use of self-adhesive stickers by individual users to “personalize” their hard hats or for other marking or identification pur-poses is a common practice. Because of the type of adhesive used in typi-cal pressure-sensitive stickers, there is very little potential for chemical interaction between the adhesive and the helmet shell, and their use would not be expected to negatively affect the performance of the helmet under

normal conditions. Adhesive stickers should be placed at least 3/4” away from the edge of the helmet and the area of the helmet covered in this way should be kept to a practical minimum to permit regular inspec-tion of the helmet shell for signs of damage from use or aging. If any surface cracks, however small, should appear on the shell surface, either in the vicinity of the stickers or elsewhere, the helmet should be removed from service and replaced immediately. The best practice is always to use the helmet as it was received from the manufacturer, or to consult the manufacturer before making any product modifications.”
North/Fibre-Metal: “Do not...apply decals or stickers without the written permission of North Safety Products. ...Stickers can cover cracks or dam-age on the shell.” — So, there you have it, the current recommendations from three of the major hat manufacturers in response to these frequently asked questions.

I found it interesting that for some questions, their answers were essen-tially the same, but on a couple of questions, one of the manufacturers would take a stance that is the polar opposite of the other two. Hopefully this information will prove helpful when you conduct OSHA training and/or worksite safety inspections. And keep in mind that these web sites also anwer a few other questions about hard hat care and use, including their policies and prohibitions against unauthorized modification of hard hats (like drill-ing holes in the shell…)
Of course, always check the manufacturers’ websites for updated information about their products. And information about all other brands and/or models of hard hats will have to be obtained from the manufacturer of that specific brand and/or model of equipment.
