To our current Titan families and prospective Titans,

As the travel hockey season winds down, we have spent a fair amount of time planning for next season. The Junior Titans will be celebrating their 10th season in 2008-2009, and it is going to be a very exciting year.

I want to thank all of our players and their families. I have been very pleased with the development of our Juniors, Tier 1 and Tier 2 programs. Our House League and Learn to Skate Programs are at record participation levels.

Both Jr. Teams had strong seasons, and Jr. B was at the top of their division. The Juniors are the pinnacle of the franchise, and the excellence of this program means that as a Junior Titan, a player can stay with the same club for their entire career, from the time mom or dad first laces up their skates, until they enter college.

Our Tier 1 program, which plays against the most competitive AAA youth hockey teams in an area from Connecticut to Virginia in the Atlantic Youth Hockey League, represented the club very well. These 5 teams often get tournament exposure on a national level and they are a key reason the Jr. Titans enjoy a reputation for excel-lence in elite hockey circles. We sent 6 of our Pee Wee Majors to the Quebec International Tournament this year, to compete against the best young players from 16 countries in front of 20,000 spectators per day. We are always looking to identify the talent within our organization to fill the ranks of these teams and we hope to expand the number of T1 teams to all eligible birth years in 08-09. These players are also eligible to participate in showcases during the season, and during the Spring and Summer at the Philadelphia Shootout, the Ronald McDonald in Toronto Canada, and the Mini Chowder Cup in Foxboro, Mass.

This was our inaugural year as a Tier 2 club, and we fielded 13 teams at this level. Despite the fact that many of our teams included significant numbers of first year travel players, we were very competitive, medaled at a number of tournaments and most importantly, universally improved as the season progressed. We have im-proved the T2 experience by increasing the number of home game slots from a minimum of 18 to a minimum of 22, and by giving each team one solo and one combo skills practice per week. This is in addition to 3 tournaments, 25 away games, clinics throughout the year, an additional off- ice condition session, goalie instruction, summer ice time, and camps. While the price has been modestly increased to reflect the additional ice time, retained uniform coloring will save on helmets, warm-ups, shells, etc.

Our parents, managers and coaches have also represented the club well. There are now over 300 Titan families, and we continue to grow. Our 150+ House League players wear the Titan logo, and will be our primary source of new travel players. We have added to the coaching staff, and added a dedicated goalie instructor. We will be adding 2 women’s teams as well, taking our numbers to over 500.

This brochure will give you more of the details of our program, our tryout process, and the proud history of the NJ Junior Titans.

A reflection of your years of hard work…

From its very first season, when we medaled in the National Championships, the Junior Titans have fielded successful Junior teams. The Junior program is at the top of our pyra-mid, and represents the achievements of each of the youth programs below it. 89% of all Division I hockey players have experience at Junior Hockey, and the Junior Titans have placed over 90 athletes into Colleges, Prep schools, Profes-sional and National Development Teams. We pride ourselves on player development and placement, showcasing our tal-ent, to expose players to the best opportunities available to them. The banners in the main arena are a testament to the players who have gone on to play at a higher level, and an inspiration to those that aspire to follow them.

For those prepared for the demands of Junior Hockey, there is no better place to play the game. The professional coach-ing staff is well known for their ability to advance players to the next level.

The Titans compete at 2 levels; Junior B as a member of the Metropolitan Junior Hockey League, Junior C in the Continental Hockey Association. The competition in these leagues is unsurpassed at this level, and top teams are regu-larly competing for a national title

In addition to league play, the Junior Teams are showcased at top tournaments and non-league games to maximize player exposure. Teams practice 3 times per week along with 2 dryland workouts. Our staff will also provide placement counseling as players consider their post Junior careers.

We maintain excellent relationships with coaching staffs at the Junior A level, ECHL, and the NHL, as well as each divi-sion of NCAA hockey. For those not close to home, we can provide billeting and a great support network.

“The Junior Titans is more than just a hockey team, it’s a commitment. It’s a commitment to yourself to become a better player, team mate, and most of all a better person. My years with the Junior Titans helped me develop into a Junior A player on the ice and Dean’s list student off the ice. The hard work and determination the organization instills in its players is something that does not go away once you take off the skates it carries over into your stud-ies, profession, and attitude towards life. The Titans open many doors for its players both on and off the ice. As a former Junior A player and now a Profes-sional Architect the Titans have steered me in the right direction.”

We are fortunate that our Director of Player Ad-visement is Mike Haviland, Head Coach of the Rockville Ice Hogs, the AHL Affiliate of the NHL’s Chicago Blackhawks. In 2007 Mike was named AHL “Coach of the Year”. He has also won 2 ECHL Kelly Cup Championships as head coach. Mike has 2 children in the program and is an invaluable resource for helping our players get exposure to other coaches, recruitment directors and scouts.

Midgets Keeping your options open...

Many clubs force a tough decision on their players as they leave Bantams and enter Midgets: play club travel hockey or High School hockey, but not both. This ends the club ca-reers of many players.

Remember, the Titans are different and want you to be with us through H.S., and help to place you into a great col-lege program. A number of Titan coaches also coach H.S. teams, and we understand the desire many have to wear their school colors on the ice. The quality of H.S. hockey continues to improve in the area and we are supportive of our local schools.

For this reason, we offer two choices for our Midget play-ers: Short Season or Full Season. The Short Season teams, available at T1 and T2 play a front-loaded schedule, giving teams a busy fall with enough games to qualify for playoffs, but ending the regular season by December 1, before the major commitments of the H.S. season. Players are free to commit 100% of their effort to their school team, and are in prime physical condition.

Eligibility: Every league has rules that stip-ulate certain limits on player movement. Some apply to the player, requiring a release, while others impose limits on the number of players moving from one club to another at each level. The Titans will make every effort to place you on a team, while respecting the rights of other clubs. Check with your own club if unsure about your freedom to move.

The Full Season Midget program is just that; a full league schedule, September to February, in-cluding multiple tournaments, showcases and exhibitions with top New England Prep Schools. The time commitment here is significant, but the level of competition at T1 Midget is unsurpassed by all but a few hockey oriented prep schools. It truly is your choice as to which option you se-lect. Players in both categories are tracked by our junior coaches, as our Midgets are our prime source of Junior players. The Tier 1 AAA U18 full season team is a “slow down team” which means we will still front load league games. After High School starts the team will reduce their commitment to 1 practice a week and maybe 1 game a weekend. The Tier 1 AAA U16 National team will follow the same pattern as the u18.The Tier 1 AAA U16 American team is a full blown short season that means they will shut down /stop on Dec. 1. T2 is all short season. We only ask that you make this choice before tryouts, so that we can evaluate you with other players in the same category.

Learning the game… and having fun

Birth years :Squirt 1998-99, Pee Wee 1996-’97, Bantam 1995-’94

The game changes dramatically through these prime youth years. Learning to play together as a cohesive unit comes through practice and acquiring fundamental skills. Our coaching philoso-phy is one of progressive development and preparation for the next level. While each head coach has their own style, we meet of-ten and work as a unit, using common “Titan Terms” and building blocks, so that your child does not have to learn an entirely new approach each year. Our skills practices often have 5-6 coaches on the ice from all levels, giving less downtime and far more in-dividual correction and adjustments than can happen with just a head coach and an assistant. Players are sometimes given expo-sure to practice with higher level teams as the season progresses, and all players are prepared for their move to the next age group. Winning is great, but not the highest priority. Our coaches are measured by how far the players have progressed in their skills and knowledge of the game, plus their enjoyment and desire to return for another season. At these levels teams typically participate in tournaments which are carefully selected to ensure the teams achieve their own spe-cific goals.

Tier 1, or AAA hockey is the highest level of youth competition nationally. There is a higher economic commitment and more travel. We compete in the Atlantic Youth Hockey League with 6 NJ clubs, and 14 from out of state. Teams are broken up by birth year, so there can be 2 for each level. “Minor” teams are in their first year whereas “Major” teams have players in their second year at a level. District winning “Major” teams compete in a national championship. Tier 2, has multiple competitive levels (AA, A, B). 30 NJ clubs make up the New Jersey Youth Hockey League, and many other NJ clubs compete inde-pendently. The DVHL also has clubs that offer good competition. There is no major or minor distinction, but often B teams have more of the young-er players. Clubs often have more than one team at a particular level. The league has a playoff structure and there is a national tournament for T2. Independent teams can compete in regional qualifying tournaments like Silver Sticks to earn a spot at these national tournaments.

Mites

Birth year 2000 and younger

Our youngest travel level, the Mite program is different than other youth levels. USA Hockey mandates a less in-tense schedule for this age group. Full ice travel games can-not start until November and are limited to 1 per weekend. This is consistent with our view that fundamental training, cross ice and small area games are far more important to maximize the number of times each player touches the puck, to begin to develop stick handling skills, and to get small players closer to the net. Our Mites will also participate in our House league, and our coaches will maintain flexibility, waiting to assign players to a competitive level (e.g., A vs. B) until players have a chance to work together for several months. The progress at this age is dramatic and rewarding for all.

Tryouts: April 21 5:00-6:00 PM April 28 5:00-6:00 PM

Girls/WomenU14/U19

Women’s hockey participation is on the rise. Studies also show girls stay with the game longer when they are on a girls only squad. The only difference to the boys game is the checking rules at pee wee and above. The Junior Titans will field its first season of female only teams in ’08-09, with aspirations of offering young women players the same op-portunities to use our contacts to gain them admission into elite programs.Tryouts: April 28 U14 6:30-7:30 U19 7:45-8:45

Titan House League Mites-Bantams

Do you want to play the game?...Get some experience before moving on to a travel team? ...or just have fun on the ice? Our House League features one weekly skills practice with Titan T1 and T2 coaches, which focus on skat-ing skills, basic hockey concepts, along with small area scrimmages. Many of our travel players who started with roller hockey, caught their passion for ice hockey in these games. Teams play one game each weekend, in two seasons; Fall league runs from Sept-Dec, and Winter league Jan-May, with an emphasis on equal playing time. Also included is a tour-nament and a championship game. Players should have basic skating skills, and appropri-ate safety equipment.

Learn to Skate for Hockey

Building a good foundation

Many of the best players at the rink spent time learning to ice skate in a program like this. Our instructors use progressive steps to take our small-est members from simply standing up, to getting them ready to play ice hockey. Small groups cover the ice so that the teacher to student ratio is small enough for each student to get individualized instruction. These weekly sessions are conve-niently scheduled around public skat-ing times, at which our ‘LTS’ students are invited to stay on the ice at no extra charge, to practice their new skills. At the last session of each unit, an evaluator will assess your child’s progress and suggest their next lev-el of instruction. Hockey, like most sports is a repetitive motion sport. Muscle learning with proper tech-nique is essential, and helps to avoid ‘unlearning’ bad habits in later years. Initially, the only required equipment is a helmet and skates.

Goal Tending Coach Chris Kanaly has been added to the Titan’s Staff. Chris’s approach is focused on muscle memory, mental toughness and shot rec-ognition, along with the thinking process required to be an elite goalie. Positioning and proper technique is emphasized over a rigid style. In short he teaches young goalies how to stop the puck. Chris will be running Titan Exclusive camps and clinics for the club during the season.

A team for every player, from Learn to Skate….to College

It is important for players and parents to understand, that regardless of your performance at tryouts, if you want to be a Titan, there is a team for you.

That said we appreciate that tryouts can be a stressful time. Parents and kids are worried about where they (and their friends) are going to play. We are confident that we will find the right spot for your child. The fol-lowing is an explanation of how our player evaluation and placement process works. If you have any ques-tions, feel free to ask before the tryouts begin.

Upon arriving for the first night of tryouts every player will check-in and receive their numbered tryout mesh jersey. Payment in advance will get you through the process much quicker (fees are non-refundable). These jerseys should be worn for each session. Youth levels will be initially be skating with other players of the same birth year.

The ice will be broken up into 3 zones, typically with 6 coaches on the ice, 2 in each zone with additional coaches in the stands. Titan players should be famil-iar with this technique as it is often applied at clinics and practices. Parents are reminded that coaches should not be approached at this time to avoid any distraction or discussion of players.

Players are rated on skills such as skating, edges, passing, stick handling, shooting, and awareness. In later sessions, full ice drills and cross ice scrimmages with varying numbers of players will help coaches separate players by hockey sense and in-game ability. Goalies will be evaluated by goalie instructors, and participate in many of the same drills.

After each session, evaluators meet to offer their ratings of each color/number on the ice. Parents of players do not rate their own child. After 2 or 3 sessions, the groups may be split into potential Tier 1 candidates and Tier 2 candidates. At this point birth years may be combined so that for example, all Bantams are together. The most recent coach for a player may also be consulted to add additional input regarding game and practice performance over the year. Before the last night of tryouts for each group, the Hockey Director will make the final determination as to how many teams to set, and the level at which they will compete. Following the last tryout all coaches will meet for a final determination of team placements. The Hockey Director will have the final say if there is any disagreement as to individual placement.

Tier 1 (AAA) selections will be made first, followed by Tier 2 (AA, A, B). We will make every effort to place every player who tries out on an appropriate team for their abil-ity and age level.

Rosters will be posted by color/number, and parents should be prepared to sign a contract and pay a deposit of 1/3 of the entire fee at the time of selection to hold their child’s spot on the roster. Rosters will have no more than 20 players, (18 skat-ers and 2 goalies) and typically no less than 16. However, additional players may be added to a team by the Hockey Director up until the 12/31 deadline.

Titan Tryout Process

A Complete Package. Your tuition includes 22 home slots, and usually an equal num-ber of away games, 3 tournaments, 50-60 practices August-March (2x per week:, one combo, one solo full sheet), clinics, 1 week summer camp, goalie specific training, summer skills sessions, and 2 dryland fitness training sessions per week. Returning Titan players will also face lower uniform costs, as helmets, shells, warm-ups will all remain consistent with the 07-08 colors and styling.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What if I cannot attend all sessions? It is important for all play-ers to make each of their assigned tryouts. If you cannot attend, please contact your current coach or George Haviland. Players injured during the season may be asked to submit a doctor’s note indicating their approval to return to the ice. While we will at-tempt to be accommodating to absenteeism, there can be no guarantees as to placement for players missing tryouts.

What if I do not want T1 but am selected for that team? Tier 1 hockey is a more significant time and cost commitment for fami-lies. It is perfectly ok to play as a Titan Tier 2 player if this is your choice.

Can my child play up (or down)? The decision to allow a child to try-out outside their age level should be made only after consult-ing with the hockey director. Since there are very wide competi-tive options at each age level, this happens, but only rarely.

Why do I have to sign up right then and there? Teams are se-lected after careful consideration. Obtaining contracts secure that your child’s team mates are joining you in a commitment to play together for the next year. Every year a few players will decide not to play for the team for which they have been select-ed. This may cause last minute changes to multiple rosters. It is most fair if these changes are made as soon as possible to mini-mize disruption for other families. If you do not commit in short order, your spot may be given to the next worthy player.

What if I’m reading this after tryouts?Ask. Rosters may have openings. We will try our best to accom-modate you.

“As a youth hockey player I was fortunate to be a part of the inaugural season of the Junior Titans hockey organization. Over the numerous seasons I played with the Titans I was provided with superior coaching that helped me to develop the essential tools needed to become a successful hockey player at the next level. George Haviland, Mike Haviland, Randy Walker and all the rest of my Titan coaches pushed me to the best of my abilities on a daily basis which not only developed me into a good hockey player, but also a good person.”

“I joined the NJ Junior Titans as a PeeWee play-ing on their AAA teams. I advanced through the program and as a 15 year old player I was select-ed to play on their Junior B team. The Titans helped develop my hockey ability with their current coaching staff including George Havi-land, Jr., Randy Walker and Dustin DePalma.

It also taught me to manage my hockey prac-tices and games along with my academics. With their outstanding program and con-tinuous involvement with outside scouts and coaches I was recruited play at St. George’s Prep School located in Rhode Island. I select-ed the academic route coupling my hockey skills and scholastic abilities. The Titans have a tremendous network of coaches and per-sonnel that can help any player achieve their objectives whether it be the academic route or advancing with other junior programs.

Through the coaching staff at the Titans I made them all aware of my objectives and they sat with me evaluated all the pros and cons and helped me make this life chang-ing decision. I have a significant amount of respect and gratitude for the entire club.

I would be more than happy to discuss with any player or parent my involvement with the Titans and how they help me at-tain and actually exceed my objectives.”
