Assignment Judge Bookbinder will read the Law Day Proclamation to the invited public. Students from Rancocas Valley High School will provide vocal selections and Pemberton High School J-ROTC cadets will present the colors. The Burlington Bar Association will present a panel discussion on the historic Mount Laurel housing case. On the 40th anniversary of the N.J. Supreme Court’s decision in Southern Burlington County N.A.A.C.P. v. Township of Mount Laurel, the original trial team for this landmark case heard in a Mount Holly courtroom will reassemble. The trial attorneys will discuss their strategy and share exhibits and other anecdotes about a case that made legal history. Attorney panelists include: Peter J. O’Connor, Carl S. Bisgaier, Kenneth E. Meiser and moderator Kevin Walker. (Refreshments provided.)

Trial
Students were welcomed by a Superior Court judge and observed a live court room where cases were being decided. A Superior Court judge gave a presentation highlighting the basic principle that no person is above the law, a concept that is embodied in the Magna Carta and the foundation of the justice system. The program also included an overview of the court system, describing the organizational structure (judicial and administrative), explaining the hierarchy of the courts, and identifying the various types of cases heard by each court: Supreme, Superior (Appellate and Trial), and Municipal. The Salem County Sheriff’s Office gave a presentation on job duties and training and conducted a guided tour of special areas.

Trial
Participants will have the opportunity to tour the Prosecutor’s Office Crime Scene Unit and take a tour of the Justice Complex, visiting the various divisions and view unique displays of historical significance. The program will include a review of the types of cases handled at this level with a special focus on those matters that involve law enforcement. Participants will also have an opportunity meet and greet a Superior Court judge who will share his/her experiences as a judge. The program will include a mock trial in an actual courtroom, where participants will have the opportunity to decide “The Case of the Stolen Lunch”. Students will play the roles of judge, attorneys, court reporter, witnesses, plaintiff, defendant and sheriff’s officer.
