1.1. 10.The first conviction penalty for a 21 year old driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a $250 to $400 fine, loss of license for THREE (3) months, a possible imprisonment for up to THIRTY (30) days and TWELVE (12) to FOURTY-EIGHT (48) hours in an IDRC.

11.The penalty for driving after your license has been suspended due to an alcohol or drug conviction is a fine of $500, a possible NINETY (90) day jail sentence and an additional loss of license of ONE (1) to TWO (2) years.

12.Possessing or displaying an altered or counterfeited license is punishable by LICENSE SUSPENSION, FINE and JAIL TIME.

13.When you drive a motor vehicle, you automatically agree to take a BREATH TEST for a suspected drinking and driving offense. This is the IMPLIED CONSENT law.

14. If you refuse to take a breath test, you are subject to an MVC insurance surcharge of $1000 a year for THREE (3) years. Failure to pay this surcharge will result in an indefinite driver license SUSPENSION until the fee is paid.

15. If it is your first offense you are presumed to have a .10% BAC or higher and the penalty is a loss of driving privileges for between SEVEN (7) MONTHS and ONE (1) YEAR to run concurrently or consecutively based upon a JUDGE’S ORDER.

16.If you lose your license for drunk driving, you cannot drive until the period of SUSPENSION ends and your LICENSE is RESTORED.

17.A HABITUAL OFFENDER is a person that has had their license suspended three times within THREE (3) YEARS.

18.New Jersey allows up to THREE (3) points to be subtracted from your driving record if you have no moving violations for ONE (1) YEAR.

19.A POLICE/TRAFFIC OFFICER can override a traffic light.

20.When traffic signals are hung vertically, the RED light is on the TOP, the YELLOW is in the MIDDLE and the GREEN is third in line.

21.An AMBER or yellow light means STOP before entering the INTERSECTION unless the vehicle is CLOSE to the INTERSECTION that it cannot be STOPPED SAFELY.

30.When the pavement is marked with two centerlines, one solid and one broken, PASSING is permitted on the side with the BROKEN line.

31.Double SOLID lines in the center of a two-way road means traffic should not CROSS from either side.

32. If a passenger in the front seat of a car, who is 17 years of age, is caught not wearing a seatbelt, the DRIVER is held responsible. Over the age of 18, the PASSENGER is held responsible.

36. Passengers under EIGHT (8) years of age who weigh less than 80 lbs. must be secured in a child passenger restraint system or booster seat in the rear seat of the vehicle.

37. If there is no rear seat, the child passenger restraint system or booster seat may be used in the front seat. However, never place a rear-facing INFANT seat in the front seat of a vehicle that has a front passenger-side air bag, unless the vehicle’s passenger-side air bag can be DISABLED.

38. Using both a safety belt and a shoulder strap is important because they KEEP PASSENGERS FROM BEING THROWN, PREVENT PASSENGERS FROM HITTING THE DASHBOARD OR WINDSHEILD and KEEP PASSENGERS FROM SLIDING DURING STOPS AND TURNS.

39. Pushing the BRAKE PEDAL down too hard is a common mistake a new driver makes.

41.When driving in reverse, steer in the direction you want the REAR of the car to go.

46.The speed limit in a SCHOOL zone, RESIDENTIAL area and a BUSINESS district is TWENTY-FIVE (25) mph, unless otherwise posted.

47.New Jersey law requires you keep to the right except when PASSING, DRIVING ON A ONE WAY STREET and UNLESS IMPRACTICAL TO TRAVEL ON THAT SIDE OF THE ROAD.

48.Crossing center lines on a two-way roadway for passing is legal when the BROKEN/DASHED LINE is on your side.

49.In most cases, you pass on the left. You may pass on the RIGHT when the driver ahead is making a LEFT turn and there is room to PASS.

50.You should always YIELD to emergency vehicles, pedestrians and other vehicles already in the INTERSECTION.

51.When approaching an uncontrolled intersection, you should REDUCE SPEED and be ready to STOP. As a general rule, the driver on the LEFT should YIELD to the driver on the RIGHT.

52.When it is legal to turn right on red, you must make a FULL STOP and check TRAFFIC.

53.To make a right turn, you should get in the RIGHT lane.

54.When making a left turn, you should get into the lane NEAREST to the CENTER of the ROADWAY.

55.When making a left turn from a two-way road onto a four lane highway, the proper way to turn is to APPROACH THE TURN AS CLOSE TO THE CENTER LINE, MAKE TURN BEFORE CENTER OF INTERSECTION and TURN INTO THE LEFT LANE OF THE ROAD.

56. If you are approaching a school bus when it shows a flashing red light, you must STOP at least TWENTY-FIVE (25) FEET from the bus.

57.When a school bus has stopped at a school to pick up or let off children, you may pass at a speed of no more than TEN (10) mph.

95.Your emotions can have a great effect on your driving. If you are ANGRY or EXCITED you should give yourself TIME to COOL OFF.

96.If a collision looks possible, chose to hit something that will GIVE rather than something hard.

97.If you go into a skid, you should take your FOOT off the GAS and turn in the DIRECTION the rear of the car is skidding.

98.If you run off the pavement you should SLOW DOWN and turn back onto the pavement SLOWLY.

99.If your brakes fail, you should SHIFT to a LOWER gear and PUMP the brakes.

100.If you have a blowout, you should GRIP the WHEEL firmly, keep the car going STRAIGHT, slow down and then PULL off the road.

OTHER POINTS TO REMEMBER…

Under GDL law a person is required to attend Probationary Driving School for accumulation of 4 or more points from 2 violations or a DUI.

You must stop 15 ft from a railroad or 25 ft from a school bus when flashing lights are present.

It takes 25% more distance for a truck to stop in bad weather.It takes 25% more distance for a truck to stop in bad weather.

When your license is returned to you after suspension for point or after completing a driver improvement program you will be on probation for 1 year.

Failure to STOP at a crosswalk for pedestrians = $500 fine, 25 days in jail, 6 mo license suspension, 2 points and community service.

$100 fine for violating any of the GDL restrictions.

NO ZONE – tractor trailers blind spot. They have limited visibility, require longer stopping distances and room to maneuver.

Fines DOUBLE in a work zone or safe corridor.

Red GDL decals must be displayed on each license plate.

Operating a vehicle on public or private property to avoid a traffic signal is 2 points.

What is a DEPENDANT???

Even if you do not have a permit or license - If you are convicted of Graffiti, Pulling a False Alarm or Buying Alcohol underage your driving privileges can be postponed or suspended.
