The exhibit features highlights of the prom inent television, newspa per and magazine cove rage of the release of the U.S. Surgeon General's Report on Smoking and Health on January 11, 1964 and includes anti-smoking postage stamps from around the world. Formerly exhibited at Roswell Park Cance r Institute, the exh ibit includes postcards that can be filled out to urge that a special stamp be created in 2014 to commemprate the 50th anniversary of the of the Surgeon Gene ral's Report . The stamp wou ld also honor Dr. Luther Terry, the ninth Surgeon Gene ral of the United States from 1961 to 1965, best known for his warnings against the dangers of and the impact of tobac co use on health. The stamps were collected by James Lutschg, MD, a pulmonary disease physician in Baton Rouge, LA, and were donated to the University of Alab ama Center for the Study of Tobacco and Society, whose Directo r, Ala n Blum, MD, curated the exhibit. Dr. Blum is an adjunct professor in the Department of Health Behavior at RPCI. "The 1964 report was historic in that it really changed people's views about smok ing and health and helped to lead changes in smoking behavior and reductions in diseases caused by tobacco use," said K. Michae l Cummings, PhD, Chair of the Department of Health Behavior at RPCI. "More than 60 million American s have stopped smoking since the report was presented by Dr. Luther Terry in 1964 . A stamp commemora ting this monument al repo rt w ill be an importa nt symbo l to remind us all to help prevent the next generat ion from the need less suffering caused by tobacco use." "The United States has issued stam ps urging support for breast cancer resea rch, prosta te cancer scree ning, sickle cell awareness and the fight against alcoholism," noted Dr. Blum. "Yet we are not among the 65 countries that have issued a stamp against smoking, which remain s the leading prevent able cause of death and disease." At its annual meeting in June, the American Medica l Assoc iation passed a resolution, endo rsed by dozens of other medical organizations, calling for such a stamp . Support for a stamp commemorating the 50th anniversary of the release of the U.S Surgeon General's Report on Smok ing and Health can be sent to the Citizen's Stamp Adv isory Comm ittee on Stamp Development, U.S. Posta l Serv ice, 1735 North Lynn Street, Suite 5013, Ar lington, VA 22209-6432. "Roswell Park is proud to be join ing other health organizations in the campaig n to encourage the U.S. Posta l Service to adopt a commemorative stamp recogni zing the 1964 Surgeon General's Report," said Dona ld L.
