Everybody’s Talking!Anonymous winner: When someone wins a lottery, it’scommon for pictures of the lucky person to be taken and pub-licized. But a Jamaican woman decided she didn’t want to berecognized after she won $1.4 million (USD) in a lottery.During the presentation of her large check, the woman, knownas N. Gray, donned an enormous, round, yellow, smiling emojimask, complete with a winking eye. There is no way anyonewould ever recognize her! The woman, who won the money ina Super Lotto game, told organizers that she plans to carry onwith life as usual. She won’t quit her job, but she may go on acruise just for fun.Saving the child: A brave ex-soldier from Huaihua, HunanProvince (China), completed a daring civilian rescue after hesaw a child in danger on a fifth floor window of an apartmentcomplex. Zhang Xin used window grill bars to climb to thechild, who was dangling precariously, while worried onlookerswatched from below. Some of the onlookers managed to get atarp in place beneath him in case he fell, but he didn’t! Uponreaching the fifth floor, he managed to push the crying toddlerback into the apartment. Furry baby: When fully grown, a bear is unlikely to be mistakenfor a dog. But what about when they are babies? A man fromYongsheng County, Yunnan Province (China), did just that. When he was out looking for wild mushrooms, he came across alittle puppy, or so he thought. He took the pup home andlooked after it, but must have realized something was amisswhen the puppy grew into a very large Asian bear, which is aprotected species. The man kept the bear in a cage, but tookgood care of it. Someone reported him, and authorities claimedthe bear. The man was not fined because he was cooperativeand the bear was in good health.Escaped pigs: A security camera revealed that, in the middle ofthe night, two pigs appeared at a gas station in Upper Coomera,Queensland (Australia). When the sun came up, the porky beastsgreeted amused customers and staff, many of whom took photos. The pigs spent several hours checking out people and cars. They also enjoyed rutting around in a garden before taking anap. It turns out that the friendly, but mischievous, pair had gottenaway from their owner’s home, located not far from the gasstation. The owner soon arrived on the scene to pick up thetwo curly-tailed beasts.

Your Weekly Horoscope
Lucky numbers this week: This week’s odds favor Aries winners
with the luckiest number being 8.
Did You Know...Olive origins: The scientific name for olive trees is Olea
europea. These trees can live for hundreds of years. The olive
fruit is not eaten right off the tree, as it is too bitter. Olives are
eaten after being cured.Accidental toy: The Slinky toy was invented by Richard
James in 1943. A naval engineer, James was trying to use
springs to find a way to keep fragile devices steady during use
on ships. When he accidentally knocked over a spring, he saw
its potential as a toy.Painting in blue: When Spanish artist Pablo Picasso
(1881-1973) was in his early twenties, he went through his
“Blue Period” of painting. During this time, he used various
shades of blue as the dominant color in his work. Sled dog: The Chinook dog breed originated in the state of
New Hampshire (US) in the early 1900s. A cross between a
farm dog and a husky, Chinooks are gentle and intelligent,
and were originally bred to pull sleds.Standing tall: The highest mountain in the Western
Hemisphere is Cerro Aconcagua, or “Rock Sentinel.” Part of
the Andes Mountain Range in the Province of Mendoza
(Argentina), Aconcagua stands approximately 6,960 meters
(22,835 feet) above sea level.
On the Lighter SideMiddle age is when the narrow waist and the broad mind
begin to change places. Judge: “I’ll have order in this court! Order in this court!”Plaintiff: “I’ll have a hamburger with onions.”How do you milk an ant? First you get a very low stool….His trouble is too much bone in the head and not enough in
the back.Hard: an easy word that means difficult.

Everybody’s Talking!Savory cakes: When people eat cake, it’s usually a sweettreat that incorporates such flavors as chocolate and vanilla. That’s not the case with the creations at Tot Aw, a bakery inJakarta, Indonesia. Short for “totally awesome,” Tot Aw’sbakers make cakes out of instant noodles. They press the cookednoodles into round forms and stack them into tiers. Each tierthen gets “iced” with savory, rather than sweet, toppings, suchas meatballs or curry chicken stew. These noodle cakes havebecome very popular, with people ordering them for birthdaysand weddings.Returned to owner: When Kim Fauth-Newberry donatedher late grandfather’s footstool to charity, she had no idea shewas also giving away over $43,000 (USD). From Owosso,Michigan (U.S.), Fauth-Newberry wanted to give away hergrandfather’s furniture to people who might need it. Luckilyfor her, an honest man named Howard Kirby became theowner of the stool. When a family member unzipped thestool’s cushion and found money inside, Kirby knew just whatto do. He took it back to the second-hand store. The storefound Fauth-Newberry, and he gave the money back to her. Stretchy outfit: Clothing makers use a variety of materialsto make fashionable outfits, such as wool, cotton, rayon, linen, and silk, but rubber bands? Those weren’t a very commonclothing material until Rie Sakamoto of Tokyo, Japan, tried them.An art student at Tama Art University, the creative clothingdesigner decided to see what she could make by knitting rubberbands together. Her endeavor was successful; she made dresses, jackets, and scarves. Intrigued by its qualities, including flexibilityand texture, her goal was to find new uses for this ubiquitousoffice staple. Fake kidnapping: A man from a town called Pitalito, in southwestern Colombia, didn’t really want to get married. A few daysbefore the nuptials, he confessed to his close friends that hewished he could get out of the commitment. They suggested afake kidnapping. The groom went into hiding, and his friendscalled police saying they had seen him being abducted by agroup of men. The police took the news very seriously andbrought in the army. The groom’s friends realized their error andconfessed what they had done. They are likely to be charged andgiven jail time for their prank.
