The training teaches basic crisis intervention skills, concepts and techniques, while examining various types of crimes and specifi c victimization dynamics that victims of crimes may face, including common trauma reactions. This training is also the gateway into volunteering or participating in an internship with the Victim Services Division. Volunteers can expect to get hands-on experience working with victims of crime on-scene and in the courtroom. Many of our volunteers go on to work in fi elds like law enforcement, social work, mental health services, and victim advocacy. Now, a soft drink company based inShizuoka Prefecture, Japan, may have won the competition forthe weirdest soda flavors. The company, called KimuraBeverage, has produced sodas with flavors that include pickledplums, curry, melon bread, and eel. Developing the flavors is nosmall undertaking, as it can take up to a year to get it just right. Plastic plant: A woman from California (U.S.) recently hada big surprise. Caelie Wilkes loves plants. She had a succulentthat she carefully looked after for two years, watering it on aschedule. Its beautiful green leaves always seemed healthy.One day, Wilkes decided to transplant her pride and joy into abigger pot. Imagine her shock when she discovered that thesucculent was fake; it had no roots and was glued onto a pieceof Styrofoam that was covered with dirt. Luckily, Wilkes has asense of humor. She posted her story, which garnered lots offunny and sympathetic comments.Snail power: When thinking about pets, most people conjureup images of cats, dogs, bunny rabbits, parrots, and maybe evenpot-bellied pigs. But snails? That is the choice of Pepper Apollo, awoman from the United Kingdom who cares for approximately150 of the creatures. She started collecting them a few years agowhen she found some near her workplace. Today, she keeps herlarge collection of tiny pets in tiered terrariums where they live aluxurious, well-fed life. Apollo genuinely feels that each one of herlittle charges has its own personality.Animal sanctuary: A couple in India love wildlife. In 1998,wildlife photographer Aditya Singh and his artist wife,Poonam Singh, started purchasing farmland near theRanthambore Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan, northern India.Farmers happily sold their land because the big cats on thereserve threatened farmers’ livelihoods. The couple hasallowed the forest to regrow on the land, and today it is a lushhome for tigers, leopards, wild boars, and other animals. TheSinghs even dug watering holes for the animals. Now thatthese predators have the food and water they need, they arenot as much of a threat to farmers.
