In the UK, over 10 million tonnes of food is being thrown out every year by the food retail industry. It isestimated that about 25% of this food can be reclaimed for use. At the same time, malnutrition and food povertyare on the rise. The Joseph Roundtree Foundation estimates that there are 4 million affected by food poverty inthe UK, and with food prices on the rise and worries about food scarcity being a hot topic, these figures are onlygoing to increase.
FoodCycle inspires young people in the communities to take up action against these injustices and do something practical to tackle it, and that’s collecting food and cooking delicious meals for those in need. It’s that simple, so become a FoodCycler and become a changemaker in your community!

Be a Champion
Duties: At the heart of an idea lies a champion- at Foodcycle a team of champions are leading the idea forward in their community.
Your team will lead the way in the community, finding the kitchens, food, beneficiaries and
volunteers in the beginning to make the idea anreality.
You will be asked to keep the services dependableand of high quality. You will also raise funds tokeep the hub going year after year, as eachFoodCycle must have a strong base to support itsgood work.
Being a champion will probably be the mostchallenging thing you have done to date, and isfor those that want to grow personality andprofessionally. Not for the faint of heart, the
success of a local FoodCycle hub often lies in thehands of the champions.
Time: 6-8 hours a week to start it up, 4-6 hoursa week when services are running.
Benefits: A champion will get all the benefits of running their own charity- that is, experience in
volunteer management, communications withstakeholders, marketing, fundraising and
financial management.
Sounds scary? Not to fear, FoodCycle’s dedicateddevelopment managers will support you everystep of the way to make your hub as success!
Still interested? Good. You can apply by visiting www.foodcycle.org.uk , and click on getinvolved.
Be a FoodCycler
Duties: Champions are the ones making thehub work, but it is really down to the local
volunteers to make things happen.
A volunteer’s main role is to help with thecollection, cooking and serving of the food.Outside of the kitchen, your tasks can be
varied, you can help with fundraising events, recruiting more volunteers or helping out
organise a FoodCycle social.
Time: 3-5 hours per session, preferably onesession every month.
Benefits: A volunteers commitment is flexible,so ideal for someone who is busy with manyother responsibilities. If you only got a couplehours to spare every couple weeks, this is thebest way to spend your time with FoodCycle.
Two Ways to get involved!
“Cooking sessions are great - you get to meet andchat with many different people of different agesand different backgrounds and not only does itimprove your people-skills, it really opens yourmind and eyes to the types of people out there!”
