Message from the President

Dear Friends,

When Wake Forest Baptist Health had the opportunity to collaborate with High Point Medical Center - we began to imagine that something very special was about to happen!

What we envisioned was the combination of a long history of compassionate care in High

Point with the dynamic innovations, strategic planning and

medical research of Wake Forest Baptist

Health. We could see that a dramatic transformation of health care in and around this community would be imminent – a transformation

that would attract and serve patients

from far beyond the Triad!

I am humbled and inspired by what I have witnessed here at High Point Medical Center in the six months I have been here. Thanks to you we are rapidly expanding our clinical services and incorporating a wide array of exciting new procedures with the new technology and renovations that have recently occurred.

Along the way, we have also built a strong community of providers - incorporating our outstanding legacy High Point physicians with the highly skilled physicians in Winston-Salem

and adding in some of the most up-and-coming providers in the Wake Forest family.

The result – an exciting new vision for health care in our community! One in which patients are experiencing a wider scope of high quality, compassionate care, all close to home – right here in High Point. High Point Medical Center has a rich history of dedicated individuals who care passionately about the health of this community. Today that dedication remains with loyal volunteers and friends who continue to ensure our growth and excellence. Our health care providers tell us each day how much your support is essential in helping to improve and expand the caliber of care they deliver to our patients.

Thank you for your support and allowing us to share with you our vision for providing High Point and the communities we serve with the highest quality health care possible.

Sincerely,

James Hoekstra, MD

Focusing on our FoundationDear Friends,We want to take this opportunity to sincerely thank you for your gifts of support to High Point Medical Center. High Point certainly has many attributes that make it a special place. One of the most important is the history of strong community support for our local health system that truly makes our city a better place to live.

In 2016, our Foundation embarked upon a much needed capital campaign which has already made a powerful impact on our cardiology, surgical and oncology programs. This highly successful campaign has raised nearly $30 million to date! Your continued support to this campaign as well as your annual giving helps provide our medical teams the vital tools they need to provide and enhance the compassionate lifesaving care they provide each and every day.

We are equally grateful to many of you for participating in and supporting our fundraising events including our signature event, Sun & Stars, that continues to support our capital project needs, the Pink Ribbon luncheon

benefi ting our Hayworth Cancer Center patients and our Heart & Sole 5K Run, which benefi ts our cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation patients. These and more help raise signifi cant needed funds for so many who come to us in need of health care.

like you, we are committed to our hospital because we live here, we work here and we believe that enhancing patient care is vital to keeping our community healthy. On behalf of our highly skilled physicians, nurses and staff at High Point Medical Center, we thank you again for your generosity and dedication to those we serve.

Mark Kalstrup wondered what was behind the bump

on his jawline. With his dad’s cancer battle fresh on his mind, he knew this was not something to ignore. Mark made an appointment with his family doctor. Dr. Al Hawks ran some tests and determined it might be a branchial cleft cyst. When the spot remained, Dr. Hawks referred Mark to Dr. David Moore, an ear, nose and

throat specialist. Observing no improvement with antibiotics, Dr. Moore ordered a needle biopsy at the High Point Surgery Center. The biopsy showed no cancer but it irritated the bump. Dr. Moore scheduled surgery to remove it. This time, the pathology report came back positive for cancer. That was the day Mark’s life turned upside down.

It wasn’t long before Mark found himself on a first-

name basis with the staff and physicians at the

Hayworth Cancer Center. With their help and under the direction of Dr. George Sanders, his oncologist, and Dr. Stacy Wentworth, his radiation oncologist,

Mark endured seven rounds of

chemotherapy and 35 radiation treatments. Their level of expertise and persistence made all the difference in Mark’s cancer journey, and it is one more benefit of great doctors working in harmony, thanks to High Point Medical Center’s merger with Wake Forest Baptist Health that united the two systems.

Mark recalled one night after surgery he woke up with bleeding in his throat. “I texted Dr. Moore and headed to the hospital. Thank goodness Dr. Moore answered my text and advised me to gargle with ice water. I was able to stop the bleeding in the parking lot at the hospital.” His wife, Debra, recalls thinking then, “I’d never seen him so scared. I realized I am taking care of him now, and he has always taken care of me before.”

Why Mark Kalstrup trusted Wake Forest Baptist Health - High Point Medical Center’s

Hayworth Cancer Center with his treatment.

Mark also speaks highly of Hayworth Cancer Center’s erin kline, his nutritionist and cancer navigator. “She guided me in terms of nutrition and exercise. Plus she was invaluable in her coordination of everything.” She is just another example of the care and compassion at the Hayworth Cancer Center.

“Cancer is very much a journey, and you need to take control and be your own advocate,” Mark explains. But after looking at Duke, Sloan kettering, and the Mayo Clinic, he made the decision to receive care at the Hayworth Cancer Center. Mark says two things helped him make his decision: the quality of care his father and brother-in-law received previously there; and even more importantly, the people.

Debra agrees the people made the difference in the decision to choose High Point

Medical Center. “everyone was wonderful, and once we started meeting the doctor that was when I knew that High Point was where Mark needed to be.”

“When you walk into the facility you feel that everyone cares,” Mark explains. “You feel the love, compassion, and kindness.” The decision to trust High Point Medical Center is one Mark would make again.

Debra credits the hospital with giving her her husband back. “During his treatment, he was really quiet. I missed his laugh.”

“I suffer from some side effects of the treatment, but each day I awake grateful for my friends at Hayworth Cancer Center,” says Mark.

inspiring HopeWhile Mark Kalstrup was undergoing cancer treatment at High Point Medical Center his wife, Debra, discovered some lovely little hand-painted rocks with inspirational messages in a bowl in the foyer. They are there for patients to take to brighten their day. Now, Debra and their granddaughter, Kylie, help hand paint rocks for other friends undergoing

Generations of givingFor the 45-plus years

that Greg York has called High Point home,

High Point Medical Center has been a central figure in the community. But York’s connections to the hospital run deeper than simply sharing a city.

Recently Greg’s 91-year-old father, Vann, fell and broke his hip in the middle of the night. “We took dad to the eR, and Dr. Sharon Babcock was called in to operate,” said Greg. “When I first saw her name I did not recognize it, which was odd because we know most of the doctors, and I knew that High Point Medical Center had some great orthopedic surgeons.”

But any concerns Greg had were quickly set aside. “I asked her how many of these procedures she had done, and she looked at me and said ‘I am a trauma fracture specialist from Wake Forest Baptist Health. I am the one to do this.’ She made it happen and did a fantastic job.” For Greg, the skill and service that Dr. Babcock provided for his dad simply speaks to the power of the new relationship High Point Medical Center has with Wake Forest Baptist Health. “If my dad’s experience is what this combination means for the High Point community, it is a very positive thing.”

A commitment to philanthropyIn addition to having experienced the professionalism and skill of High Point Medical Center’s

staff first hand, both Greg and his father have served on High Point Medical Center’s board in the past. The family has made financial donations to the hospital as well. “We have always supported High Point Medical Center because we know the importance of having a strong hospital in our town,” Greg explains.

A perfect example of this is Greg’s parents’ decision to provide funding for the Vann York Cardio Performance Zone in the hospital’s fitness center. “My parents chose to give money to renovate the fitness center because they felt it was important from the hospital’s standpoint, as well as being important for the community, to have a place where people could go and be proactive about their health.”

Generations of giving Creating a better communityAs the head of the local business, the Vann York Auto Group, Greg feels the role of a hospital in a community can never be underestimated. He says, “It is key for every community to have great medical care—it helps to recruit and retain business.” Greg feels strongly that local business owners should support High Point Medical Center to be able to maintain the community’s standard.

“High Point Medical Center has always been there for our family from the joys of childbirth to the challenges of surgery and tough diagnoses. The evitable twists and turns of life have been little less scary knowing High Point Medical Center and their staff of familiar faces are just around the corner.” Greg believes that this personal connection is one of many strengths High Point Medical Center offers the residents of High Point. “We support High Point

Medical Center because every vibrant community needs access to caring, state-of-the-art health care for all its citizens.”

Greg is excited about the future of High Point Medical Center. “High Point Medical has had a long tradition of very strong doctors, and I have no doubt that the association with Wake Forest Baptist Health will allow us to continue that tradition, especially with doctors like Dr. Babcock.”

“We support High Point Medical Center because every vibrant community needs access to caring, state-of-the-art health care for all its citizens.”

“IT IS KEY FOR EVERY COMMUNITY TO HAVE GREAT MEDICAL CARE— IT HELPS TO RECRUIT AND RETAIN BUSINESS.”
