Letter from the PresidentThere are only a few weeks left until the new Rotary year and the change over to Bryant Stokes as President. Please support Bryant at our Club Changeover Night coming up on June 30th.

Our next 2 club meetings will be regular meetings with external guest speakers. The following meeting will be a club forum, and that will be our final Wednesday meeting for this Rotary year, as our Changeover Night the week after will replace our Wednesday club meeting.

Thank you to those who have recently taken on a coordination role in the club. We now have a few things underway, and we look forward to hearing back from those members about those projects and activities.

Yours in Rotary,Simone

Last Week’s MeetingDavid Barnes, President of the Multiple Sclerosis Society of WA, addressed the Club on his work with abrasives in

the middle East and Asia.

David provided interesting information regarding various types of abrasives, plus information on the factories in the various countries.

This Week's MeetingThis week's presentation will

be from Ian Fletcher, from Public Affairs at BHP Billiton.

We will also be conducting a short special general meeting for our club foundation to change some of the Rules of Association. All members have been advised in writing and members have been requested to complete and return Proxy forms so that if not present on 8th there will be the required number to progress this change.

Currently, all but three have retuned completed proxies hence, there will be the required 75% of membership covered.

members.

Mignon and Alistair met when they were both volunteers with Volunteers Abroad in Fiji in the 1990s. In recent years they have taken on supporting students at a school at which Mignon volunteered and currently it is being listed as a Rotary Australia World Community Service Project (RAWCS ). Mignon and Alistair will oversee this project.

PDG Hugh Lavery who was GSE Team Leader to Fiji has been taken to see the school Mignon and Alistair support and a Rotary Club in Fiji has undertaken to work with Mignon and Alistair with their Koro Scholarship Fund.

Mignon was a Rotary Exchange Student to Sweden, is a friend of Andrea Hayward, our former member who is now in Canberra and is a Journalist who lectures at Curtin University.

Alistair’s classification is Accounting Research and it was interesting to learn that he is involved with statistics

and transparency of NGOs such as Rotary and how money is spent, the amount syphoned off in overheads etc. Alistair too is a Professor at Curtin University.

Paint Your PinkyThe ‘Paint Your Pinky’ event on the morning of Friday 3rd June at North Cottesloe Primary was a resounding success.

At the 9:00am School Assembly, Ken Collins spoke on Rotary’s Polio Program, after which students painted ‘pinkies’ pink or purple, while other students collected coins to immunise children in the endemic countries.

Headmaster Wayne Press, teachers and students all got into the spirit of the day with ‘free dress’ mainly in pink or purple. Signs made by students on the significance of the activity were displayed inside and outside classrooms throughout the school.

A total of $512.25 was raised

on the day for the Gates PolioPlus Challenge. A huge thank you to Principal Wayne Press, Vice Principal Darralyn Dawson, teachers and students.

GSE Team From Fiji to WilunaIt is anticipated that the GSE Team from Fiji to Wiluna will be in the care of our club from 6th - 10th September and again 6th - 8th October 2011. The Team will be at our meeting on 8th September.

The Team will be comprised of four Team members plus a Rotarian Team Leader.

Members are required to ‘host’ the GSE Team plus drivers are needed to drive the five to various activities which will be arranged by PDG Hugh Lavery. Please let Ken know if you are willing to host, drive or both.

Please participate as our club has been assigned these roles due to the fact that the Uni Focus GSE

was arranged with the Rotary Foundation by Ken as a direct request for assistance from our member Alan Stewart to take a team of indigenous leaders and health workers from Wiluna to Fiji to teach them ‘village life’ and how better to organise their community.

RYDAMembers are asked to let Hamish Mackie know if you are able to assist with the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness on 16th August.

Here is your opportunity to be a part of one of the many outstanding youth projects Rotary is involved with.

Members can go along on 23rd June to a RYDA which is being arranged by the Rotary Club of Matilda Bay to see what the project is about and what is involved.

Working with Children Cards are a requirement so members

who are prepared to assist on 16th August should ensure they make an application now for a card if they do not already have one.

Magnifying MicroscopesChief Scientists Lyn Beazley continues to promote the Magnifying Microscope Project as she travels the state.

Dr Kerry Trayler, Principal Scientist with the Swan River Trust has communicated with John Clarke (CEO of the Science Teachers Association of WA) and our club. The Trust has a ‘Ribbons of Blue’ coordinator and are looking at putting information on the microscope project on their website. John Clarke is also looking at putting information on their website on, and is hopeful of following up the activities booklet put out by Watercorp with some more sophisticated uses of the

microscopes.

This project is doing more to raise Rotary’s profile in the community and work with other organisations than any other in many years

Changeover NightPlease put 30th June in your diary for the Club Changeover Dinner. All members, spouses, family, friends, Friends of the Club and potential members are encouraged to attend to make the function a success.

Justin will be heading off to China a few days later so it will be an opportunity for us to farewell Justin before his departure. Venue: Nedlands Golf Club, Melvista Ave, NedlandsTime: 6:30pm for 7.00pmCost: $50.00 per person for a 3 course meal with bar service available. Please RSVP to club Secretary Daniel Forsdyke.

The Four Way Speaking ContestDonna Bicknell and Jenny Gill are working on the Four Way Speaking Contest with the four local Colleges and possibly Ellenbrook Secondary College.

Young Cooks FundraiserJenny Gill is now freed up from her heavy work schedule and able to head up her fundraising initiative. PE Bryant Stokes has undertaken to make an approach to Wesfarmers for sponsorship, which is the next step with advancing this fundraiser.

Member UpdateA speedy recovery is sent to Claire Forsdyke who has recently undergone a surgical procedure. It was great to see Ken Collins at Rotary last Wednesday after his recent surgery.

Paddy Ramanathan is being laid low with an old medical problem. We hope you recover quickly and are back with us soon.

Tax Deductible GiftsAs we are now heading towards the end of the Financial Year, if any members would like to reduce the amount of tax they pay to the ATO, there are two excellent areas in which Tax Deductible gifts can be made.

Firstly, there is the newly set up RCFB Charitable Foundation. Funds are required in the Charity account before projects can be funded.

Secondly, the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International is the arm of Rotary which funds our match for Matching Grants, Group Study Exchange Teams, Ambassadorial Scholars, Peace Scholars and PolioPlus. Our Club has already benefited significantly in a number of these areas. Please contact Ken if you are interested in financially supporting the Rotary Foundation. Remember, every dollar contributed goes to projects as all administration costs involved with Rotary come from our dues, not money contributed to

projects.

The Rotary Foundation recognises gifts of US$1,000 and more with Paul Harris Fellowships, multi PHFs, Major Donor crystals etc all as a form of appreciation for monies given.

Friendship, Fellowship and Service Following on from the message in last week’s bulletin by the Rotary Foundation Chairman, Past Rotary In terna t iona l President Carl-Wilhelm S t e n h a m m a r , B i l l Cadwallader, a Past Director friend of Ken and Di’s from Homer, New York State in the USA has written: “Yesterday my good friend, Dr. Paul Higgins, a wonderful Rotarian, died at age 95. He was the chairman of our Polio-plus campaign when our club raised

$1000.00 per member; $139,000.00 to vaccinate over one million children. I was the National Coordinator for Polio-plus so worked closely with Paul. With Paul, I think of the too many times that I did not take the time to have tea with Paul and his wonderful wife, Elima. We do get tied up in our own little knots and think that what we are doing is so important, but it is the friendships we make that are the most important of all. I suppose that I will always struggle to find the proper balance; but I will always treasure the tea that I drank with Paul and Elima. I supplied the cookies and Elima supplied the tea. She was from an English family from Fiji. Paul supplied the overflowing love.” We are encouraged to remember that members of Rotary are members of the family of Rotary. Bill’s message is another reminder of the fact that Rotary was founded on Fellowship and Service and that the success

of Rotary is this combination.

Burundi Peace ChoirKulcha Camp is a fantastic mentorship program of professional development tuition for emerging artists taught by practising industry professionals. The aim of the project is to assist new, culturally diverse acts into professional opportunities with the arts industry.

Auditions took place in May with two applicants being selected for six weeks of free tuition classes that will help hone their artistic talent and product. Congratulations to Burundi Peace Choir and Together As One.
