Old Oakland Revitalizedby Genera a e

Like so many golfing organizationsfounded before the turn of the centurystaid Oakland Ge, located a brassie shotfrom Long Island Sound and 10 miles eastof the majestic Empire State Building, dis-covered that pursuing traditional and con-v ntional ideas was a sad mistak .

It was back in 1942 when Oakland madethe discovery and as a result the club to-day is probably unique in Americanbunkerland. Getting back to early 1942,when the club was approaching its GoldenAnniversary the members elect d one ofNew York's business I aders, Thomas W.MacLeod, VP of St rn's, as president withthe und rstanding that the antiquatedmethod of doing things around the clubwould give way to more modern procedure.

Given complet authority, th progres-sive MacLeod immediately decided thatOakland, in order to be streamlined andtransform d into a magnificent golf club, would have to have a general manager. The man best qualifi d for the post, in the

By John M. Brennanopinion of the department store executive, was Martin Lyons, a man with an extensiveand excellent background in the business, having served at a number of top-flightclubs in the Metropolitan area.

When Lyons moved in at Oakland in Mayof 1942 the club was in sound financial con-dition (the club has nev r had a mortgageand had at that time a sinking fund of$100,000) but almost every other factorwas in urgent need of rehabilitation to pro-vide the facilities members had a right toexpect.

The course was in only fair shape. Theclub had had a half dozen managers withina few years. The bookke ping was done atthe treasurer's office in Pine street, Man-hattan, and most of the orders were givenby remot control from Wall street. Theclubhouse was in mediocre condition, es-pecially the kitchen which was operatingwith obsolet equipment.

Oakland's development depicted in photos onlounge wall. Original contract to build clubhousein 1896 and photo of first clubhouse and originalstock certificate are in middle group. At lowerleft are photos reminding members of war dayswhen horse-drawn wagons were used to conveymembers. Other shots are clubhouse destroyed byfire and interior shots.

When Lyons took over with instructionsto refurbish and revamp "everything" hedid not make the mistake of trying to rushthings. Marty, when he assumed the job atOakland felt that he would have things inship shape by the time the Golden Anniver-sary was reached in 1946, but, of course, the war necessarily changed his plans.

Modernizes the PlantHowever, a miracle has been performed

at Oakland by the dynamic Lyons, who, inhis capacity as general manager, has notonly modernized the old clubhouse andcourse for operating efficiency but hasgiven them a facelifting as well.

An inspection of the course, now one ofthe finest in the east, shows Oakland's com-plete new watering system. In giving hisattention to the course, Lyons institutedmany improvements including double tees, planting more trees and shrubs around the130-acre tract, improving and enlargingthe greens and developing splendid fair-ways. •

For years, until Lyons came to Oakland, the pro shop was located near the 10th tee.but Marty shifted the pro shop, presidedover by Elec Ednie, to new quarters con-structed in the west section of the club-house, near the first tee.

The old pro shop was streamlined andtransformed into a combination refresh-ment stand for the players reaching theback nine and as a caddie shelter.

The quaint lounge room, exquisitelydecorated and furnished, was given greaterusefulness when Marty removed a smalldoor and gave the room more sweep withan attractive archway. New iron stairwayswere built up to the ladies' quarters. Allthese improvements were in keeping withthe English motif.

20

When Lyons took over Oakland had nobar. He has constructed a solid mahoganybar and built a cocktail lounge in part ofthe lockerroom, one of the best equippedin the east.

The office, which used to be a cubbyhole with room for a couple of employeesand a telephone, is now modernized withprivate quarters for Marty and his ableassistant, Joe Burke, a war hero. In orderto build the manager's office it was neces-sary to break through a 36-inch wall.

Lyons figuratively tossed a bomb into thekitchen. It is now completely done overwith the latest in refrigeration, ranges andother equipment. In addition, the clubhousehas been completely redecorated, with theinside in brighter pastels.

Oakland, which always had a roster thatlooks like a section from Who's Who ofAmerica, currently has no mortgage, con-tinues to have a sinking fund of more than$100,000 and has an imposing waiting list. The limit on members is 275 and with 50women players.

Oakland has never operated in red inkdespite the fact that the place was allowedto run down during the depression years forlack of constructive and aggressive man-agement.

Oakland used to bar women, both fromits clubhouse and course, but when someof the old members passed on to greenerfairways and a modern crop of membersassumed control the distaff side began dig-ging divots on the hallowed soil on whichWalter J. Travis, immortal of the earlyyears of golf, learned to play the gamewhile living at the old Niantic club in near-by Flushing. The women have more thana toehold on things at Oakland during thesedays thanks to some encouragement fromLyons and others at the helm. A dozensocial parties a season are held at the club-house where such events used to be banned.

ay General Managem nt letWe met MacLeod the other day at Oak-

land and he was loud in his praise ofLyons' accomplishments. "This generalmanager idea is the salvation for manygolf clubs," MacLeod said. "The setup ofhaving manager, course superintendentand professional each conducting and re-porting uncoordinated activities to com-mittee heads, then to club directors is awaste of effort, a cause of unnecessary mis-understanding and the cause of a time lagthat is extravagant and serious in opera-tion of a short-season business. Golf clubsshould be operated along the lines of a bigdepartment store, or any other big busi-ness, with one man directing and respon-sible for the whole operation. We, at Oak-land, have found the general management
