From the OldTestament of theGood Book

God summoned his servant Moses to the mountain top, and, after giving him timeto get his breath back, he announced:

“Moses, dear man, have I got something here that you really need and have beenwaiting for, or haven’t I ?!”

“Oh, is that so”, said Moses warily, “what’s that then ?”

“It’s Commandments !” replied God, with celestial emphasis.

When the angelic fanfare faded there was a drawn out pause.

“So Commandments ?” said Moses eventually, “and what will they cost me then ?”

“Cost you ?, asked God with omnipotent indignation.“NOTHING THEY”RE FOR FREE !!!”

“In that case”, said Moses, “I’ll take 10.”

From the Editor

know I’m going to have some trouble bringing this month’s Bulletinto you because I’ve been so out of touch with Club activity, soplease forgive me if you find my prose somewhat long-winded.

Of course some in the Club have been just as busy, if notmore busy, than way back in March before our Covid 19lockdown.

First VP Brian and Secretary Sheree have been keymembers of the Tatau Pounamu Committee which hasbeen incredibly busy. The Collective has been supportingEastside families who have been least capable of copingwith the constraints of the lockdown, or most affected bythe resulting job losses. And when the alert levels allowedit Kevin and his firewood crew have started up again. Thistime their service has been more focussed with theguidance of Tatau Pounamu’s knowledge of the mostdeserving families in the community.I have never been convinced that my Lions Clubs’community service has reached those who need it most.Few of us represent the least affluent in society and ourClubs attract a never-ending stream of requests for supportand funding.

So we tend be reactive in selecting those to help. Usuallythough, those who seek help tend to be the better educatedand /or the more motivated, not a single mum with anumber of dependent kids and no transport, living inovercrowded cold, damp and unhealthy accommodation, and struggling to make ends meet on just a Social Welfarebenefit.Rotorua East Lion’s association with the Tatau PounamuCollective now allows us to support the most deserving, because its health and welfare service is led by acommunity nurse with access to the most deprived familiesin the Eastside community.Thank you, Jennifer, Brian and Sheree for grasping thisopportunity.Ed.

When New Zealand went into the Covid Alert Level One lockdown theClub had no firewood to deliver, and nowhere to cut and stockpile a newsupply. Kevin Jensen still had a number of grandparents looking aftergrandkids to deliver to, but he had to face the likelihood that the Clubwould notbe able to supply them with firewood before winter set in.To the rescue came the “Te Arawa Lakes CovidFirewood Project” which commenced in the middle of May.

This was part of a forestry training scheme run by ToiOhomai to provide trainees with chainsaw training. The landwas provided by the Hinemihi Marae, and radiata pine andDouglas fir logs were supplied free by Red Stag and NZ Timberland.

Four or five trainees, supervised by two tutors, commencedcutting firewood which would be delivered to a list ofdeserving households compiled with input from theTatau Pounamu Collective. Because of the need to teachand impose strict health and Safety constraints on theoperation our Club was initially not invited to get involved,

but a shortage of trailers and dry wood led to ourinvolvement along with that of Tiny Deane’s VisionCharitable Trust. Our Club has been represented mainly by Kevin Jensen,Brian Halligan, Kevin Beesley and Murray Longley who haveattended 2 or 3 working bees per week over the last threeweeks. Tiny Deane has been providing one or two trailersplus manpower and, more recently, a log splitter. Histrailers became critical to the project

when there was an accident to Charlie Storey’s trailer duringa firewood delivery. This broke a spring, damaged the axle, and destroyed a tyre and put the Club’stransport out of action. The trailer is currently in for repairswhich will be funded by the Club.

Another problem has been the shortage of dry wood.Because the radiata pine logs are green the resultingfirewood would normally not be usable until next winter. However, Tiny Deane was able to source pallets ofuntreated reject quarter round posts which were seasonedand acceptably dry, and so mixed loads of split radiatapine, Douglas fir, and post material were made up anddelivered. A typical working bee involved splittingrounds cut from logs by the Toi Ohomai trainees, andchainsaw cutting posts. Around mi day Tiny Deane’s twotrailers would turn up for loading and delivery of mixedloads. Most deliveries were made to Eastside or Koutuhomes, but some were sent as far afield as Lake Okareka.Tiny Deane’s trailers can deliver six cubic metres offirewood and the deck can tip which avoids unloading byhand and speeds up the turnround for deliveries. BrianHalligan estimates that around a half of the 3000 cubicmetres of logs have been processed and the Maraeexpects the site to be cleared by the end of the month. The operation is likely to be ongoing because Kevin has beenfollowing up an offer of timber fromMcAlpines which they need to getrid of. So there will be a need for more of the Club to volunteer to jointhe firewood crew and to give Kevin J, Kevin B, Brian and Murray awell-earned break.

In the July Bulletin I will report on the accident to Charlie’strailer which turned out to be a bit of a disaster saved by anact of kindness. Don’t miss it!
