ug t t t t.
Maintain the historic and oasis-like character o the
existing Green
Improve the Green as a community gathering place
Ensure high-quality and consistent design o all elements
Develop a system where the Green is proac tively
managed on an ongoing basis
Implement a series o short term interventions that main-
tain the existing character but that create an opportunity
to experiment and evaluate the changes
Engage the adjacent institutions in building a broader and
more involved constituency or the Green and a long
term strategy or its evolution
Leverage the Greens existing assets and positive activities
already taking place (e.g. Farmers Market, International
Festival o Arts and Ideas, holiday tree, existing elms etc.)
Develop a unding model or the Green that allows it to
become economically sel-sucient

Relocate and expand the existing Farmers Market to the
proposed Market Promenade where it can expand in
the all season to include more vendors, wider variety o
products, additional days o operation and other related
events (i.e. a all ood estival, ches cooking demonstra-
tions, wine tastings, harvest estival) extending to at least
Thanksgiving.
Develop a Halloween event ocused around children.
There are many models or this event but it could include
a small costume parade around the Green, decorations by
local businesses, entertainment by a variety o buskers po-
tentially organized by a combination o the Town Green
Special Services District, Yale Drama and Music Schools
and the New Haven Department o Arts, Culture & Tour-
ism as well as other activities.
Create a unique Thanksgiving event which could be an
historical event with theatrical re-enactments both out-
side and inside the churches and related to traditionaloods.
Expand the current activities related to the existing Christ
mas holiday celebration on the Green. Currently, the
Parks Department puts up a holiday tree along with a
small carousel, market and a ew other activities but the
celebration is brie and does not draw people downtown
or the entire holiday season as many cities are able to
do. In order to create a series o events that extend rom
late all until early spring, a variety o additional activities
should be considered including:
Enchanted Forest/Winter Wonderland lighting
scheme which could include lighting the trees
with small bee lights and the churches with eithe
light shows or lights outlining their proles. This
could potentially be done with Yale Drama Schoo
A series o winter concerts and perormances by
students rom local schools, ranging rom very
young to university-level, and ocused around no
just holiday music rom the United States but also
holiday music rom other countries represented
by New Haven residents rom those places. This
could be done in conjunction with churches in
and around the Green.
A tree lighting ceremony that is held in conjunc-
tion with the perormances.
An outdoor holiday market that includes the
market that Trinity Church already undertakes but

types o products that extends or a much longer
season. Consideration should be give to using anorganization that has experience with such mar-

A temporary ice skating rink around the existing
ountain. There are many models or this type o
rink. An excellent model is the one in Br yant Park
that is sponsored by Citi Bank (http://citipondat-

with the holiday market (http://theholidayshopsat-

Impresario: Handles the planning and management o
all events on the Green including developing an annual
schedule, working with partner organizations, developing
a unding strategy that includes sponsorships, setting a
ee scale and recruiting talent and reaching out to other
cultures and organizations.
Operations and management: Coordinates management
and operations including maintenance, security, trac,
parking and bus related issues, etc. The management
entity would not necessarily do all o the above but would
coordinate with the existing city departments (parks,
transportation, security) and the specic roles would bedetermined as discussions occur.
Market and economic activity: Handles activities related
to various markets that are planned during dierent sea-
sons, develops rules and guidelines and manages vend-
ing, ood trucks (i they are to be allowed), kiosks, and
caes including those that may be aliated with the three
churches. Also acts as a liaison to the Town Green Specia
Services District and to Yale University.

Work with Trinity Church to better use the area adjacent
to the Church or events and activities that they are inter-

a Church sponsored ca or wafe stand, or example,
while the lawn area between Trinity and Center Church
is used or morepassive activities such as yoga, exercises,
