About This EditionThis edition of the Haggadah incorporates the traditional tropes basedon Aleppo Codex by the Karaite Sage Aharon ben Asher. Thisproduction also contains additional songs for the Seder.

Biblical translations have been adapted from the translation of JewishPublication Society (1917). Non-biblical portions of the Haggadah areitalicized. These portions were either directly translated for this workor adapted from translations of the traditional Egyptian Karaite JewishHaggadah located at the Karaite Korner (karaite-korner.org).

IntroductionThe Haggadah tells the story of the Israelite exodus from Egypt. Soimportant was this event in the history of our people, that every yearat tables throughout the world Jewish families recount our suffering atthe hands of Pharaoh and the Egyptians, and our subsequent nationalliberation by God.

Passover also carries special significance for Karaite Jews. There hadbeen a continuous Karaite Jewish community in Egypt for over 1000years. This community was forced to leave the modern state of Egyptin the middle of the 20th century after hostility was directed at thecountry’s Jewish residents. Following the establishment of the state ofIsrael in 1948, bombs exploded in the Jewish quarter of Cairo killing34 Jews (both Karaites and Rabbanites alike). Today, Cairo has lessthan a handful of Jews, and Egypt’s historical Karaite Jewishcommunity has been scattered throughout the world with the largestpopulation centers in Israel and the United States.

Wherever you are and whatever your Passover custom, the PassoverSeder and the Feast of Unleavened Bread offer a look at our past andhope for a freer future.

Notes on Transliteration:The Hebrew letter Ayin (r) with an associated vowel is representedby à, è, ì, ò and ù. An Ayin with no vowel is represented by `(e.g. arba` for the Hebrew word r©A §x © ). The Hebrew letters g and kare transliterated by “ch” and “kh” respectively, and the Hebrew letter bwithout a dagesh is transliterated as “gh”.

In the name of the Redeemer of Israelwho responds to those who pray

HalleluYah. I will praise Adonai with my wholeheart, in the assembly of the upright, and in thecongregation. The works of Adonai are great, soughtout by all those who have pleasure in them. His workis honorable and glorious; and His righteousnessendures forever. He has made His wonderful works tobe remembered; Adonai is gracious and full ofcompassion. He has given food to them that hold Himin awe; He will ever be mindful of His covenant. Hehas shown His people the power of His works, that hemay give them the heritage of the heathen. The worksof His hands are verity and judgment; all Hiscommandments are sure. They stand fast forever andever, and are done in truth and uprightness. He sentredemption to His people; he has commanded Hiscovenant forever; holy and awesome is His name. Thefear of Adonai is the beginning of wisdom; a goodunderstanding have all they that do His

commandments; His praise endures forever. (Ps 111:1-10)

I will remember the works of Adonai; surely I willremember your wonders of old. I will meditate also ofall your work, and talk of your doings. O God, yourway is in the holiness; who is so great a God as ourGod is? You are the God that does wonders; you havedeclared your strength among the people. You havewith your arm redeemed your people, the sons of

Jacob and Joseph. Selah. (Ps 77:12-16)

You are Adonai the God, who chose Avram, andbrought him forth out of Ur of the Chaldees, and gave

him the name of Avraham. (Neh 9:7)

And thus you informed Abraham our father of theaffliction of his seed in a land that was not theirs, as it

is written:

And He said to Abram, Know well that your seedshall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and theyshall be enslaved, and they shall be oppressed fourhundred years. And also that nation, whom they shallserve, will I judge; and afterward shall they come out

with great substance. (Gen 15:13-14)

Israel also came into Egypt; and Jacob sojourned inthe land of Ham. And He increased His people greatly;and made them stronger than their adversaries. Heturned their heart to hate His people, to deal craftily

with His servants. (Ps 105:23-25)

And thus the Egyptians dealt cunningly with ourfathers and oppressed them and enslaved them and

embittered their lives, as it is written:

And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, inmortar and in brick, and in all manner of service in thefield: all their service, wherein they made them serve,

was with rigor. (Ex 1:14)

And Pharaoh and Egypt issued two more decreesupon our forefathers.

The first decree was through the midwives, as it iswritten: And the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrewmidwives, of which the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the second was Puah. And he said,When you serve as midwives to the Hebrew women, and see them upon the birthstool; if it be a son, thenyou shall kill him; but if it be a daughter, then she

shall live. (Ex 1:15-16)

A second decree was through His people, as it iswritten: And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying:every son that is born you shall cast into the river, and

every daughter you shall save alive. (Ex 1:22)

And Adonai saved them from the decrees and keptthem alive, as it is written: And when I passed by you,and saw you polluted in your own blood, I said to youwhen you were in your blood, Live; yea, I said to you

when you were in your blood, Live. (Ez 16:6)

For he remembered His holy promise, and AbrahamHis servant. (Ps 105:42) And God heard their groaning, andGod remembered His covenant with Abraham, withIsaac, and with Jacob. And God looked upon thechildren of Israel, and God knew [their distress].

And it came to pass that at midnight Adonai smote allthe firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn ofPharaoh that sat on his throne to the firstborn of thecaptive that was in the dungeon; and all the firstbornof cattle. And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he, and allhis servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was agreat cry in Egypt; for there was not a house where

there was not one dead. (Ex 12:29-30)

They are dead, they shall not live; they are deceased, they shall not rise; therefore have you visited anddestroyed them, and made all their memory to perish.(Isa 26:14) Let them be blotted out of the book of theliving, and not be written with the righteous. But I ampoor and sorrowful; let your salvation, O God, set meup on high. I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify Him with thanksgiving. (Ps 69:29-31) Singto Adonai, praise Adonai; for he has delivered the soul

of the poor from the hand of evildoers. (Jer 20:13)

And thus Adonai our God commanded us throughMoses our teacher to tell our children and our

children's children, as it is written:

And that you may tell in the ears of your son, and ofyour son's son, what things I have wrought in Egypt, and my signs which I have done among them; that you

may know that I am Adonai. (Ex 10:2)

And you shall speak and say before Adonai your God,A Syrian ready to perish was my father, and he wentdown into Egypt, and sojourned there with a few, andbecame there a nation, great, mighty, and populous. And the Egyptians evil entreated us, and afflicted us,and laid upon us hard bondage. And when we cried toAdonai God of our fathers, Adonai heard our voice, and looked on our affliction, and our labor, and our

oppression.

And Adonai brought us forth out of Egypt with amighty hand, and with an outstretched arm, and withgreat awesome power, and with signs, and with

wonders. (Dt 26:5-8)

How he had placed His signs in Egypt, and Hiswonders in the field of Zoan. And had turned theirrivers into blood; and their floods, that they could notdrink. He sent swarms of flies among them, whichdevoured them; and frogs, which destroyed them. Hegave also their increase to the caterpillar, and theirlabor to the locust. He destroyed their vines with hail, and their sycamore trees with frost. He gave theircattle to the hail, and their flocks to hot thunderbolts. He cast upon them the fierceness of His anger, wrath, and indignation, and trouble, by sending evil angelsamong them. He made a way to His anger; he sparednot their soul from death, but gave their life over to the

pestilence.

Thank the God of thoughts, the maker of wonders. As a sign onthis very day: A Passover for Hashem, A Passover for Hashem.

As a reminder of His compassion, God commanded Hiscommandments unto His people of inheritance.

To internalize His uniqueness, because there is no other butHim; for He is by Himself.

The Rock strengthened faith to knowers of understanding fromyear to year.

A memorial for the Hebrews, for generations of the generations, with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.

The Rock of all worlds sanctified the seven days [of the Feastof Unleavened Bread], since the time of putting [the lamb’s]blood [on the posts and on the lintel before the Exodus].

God created the world. In six days He finished all. The seventhday: He sanctified it and blessed it out of all days.

Therefore He commanded His people to cease work on thatday for His name, and to bow down towards His footstool.Praise Him with praises!

Sing songs pleasantly, and drink wines with savory food, forthis is a day of fortitude. He is holy; declare Him holy!

God blessed the Shabbat, for on this day He ceased work.Shabbat indicates His ancientness. He is one; individualizeHim!

O Zion! Sit down, stand up, sing joyously, and raise your voice.Play skilfully a new song unto God, your Redeemer. And whyshould you wander into the lap of strangers?! You are thedaughter of the King! Remove your clothes, and wear your

honor, the clothes of your prestige.

O Zion! Prepare for the festival in the highways, [place] guardsfor the roads. Pray for the peace of your horn, city of kings! TheSpinner of spindles will listen and fulfill your prayer. Ask for

Justice, and repair breaches, the breaches of your walls!

O Zion! How did it come to be from the Rock that the slavesrule over ministers? By turning my heart’s joy unto a pasture offlocks? O, backsliding daughter, climb on the top of themountains. Cry unto God and He will send a redeemer for the

day of your hope.As it is written: “How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of the messenger of good

tidings, that announces peace, the harbinger of good tidings, that announces salvation;

that says unto Zion: 'Thy God reigns!'” (Isa 52:7)

These are the appointed times of Adonai, holyconvocations, which you shall proclaim in their

appointed times. (Lev 23:4)

And this day shall be to you for a memorial; and you shallkeep it a feast to Adonai; throughout your generations youshall keep it as feast by an eternal ordinance. Seven daysshall you eat unleavened bread; even the first day youshall put away leaven out of your houses: for whosoevereats leavened bread from the first day until the seventhday, that soul shall be cut off from Israel. And in the firstday there shall be a holy convocation, and in the seventhday there shall be a holy convocation to you; no manner ofwork shall be done in them, save that which every manmust eat, that only may be done of you. And you shallobserve the feast of unleavened bread; for in this selfsameday have I brought your armies out of the land of Egypt:therefore shall you observe this day in your generations byan ordinance forever. In the first month, on the fourteenthday of the month at even, you shall eat unleavened bread, until the one and twentieth day of the month at even.Seven days shall there be no leaven found in your houses:for whosoever eats that which is leavened, even that soulshall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whetherhe be a stranger, or born in the land. You shall eat nothingleavened; in all your habitations shall you eat unleavened

bread. (Ex 12:14-20)

Unleavened breadshall be eaten seven days; and there shall be no leavenedbread seen with you, neither shall there be leaven seenwith you in all your quarters. And itshall be for a sign to you upon your hand, and for amemorial between your eyes, that Adonai's law may be inyour mouth: for with a strong hand has Adonai broughtyou out of Egypt. You shall therefore keep this ordinance

And when your son asks you in time to come, saying,What do the testimonies, and the statutes, and thejudgments, which Adonai our God has commanded you, mean? Then you shall say to your son, We were Pharaoh'sslaves in Egypt; and Adonai brought us out of Egypt witha mighty hand. And Adonai gave signs and wonders, greatand sore, upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all hishousehold, before our eyes. And He brought us out fromthere, that He might bring us in, to give us the land whichHe swore to our fathers. And Adonai commanded us to doall these statutes, to fear Adonai our God, for our goodalways, that He might keep us alive, as it is at this day.And it shall be our righteousness, if we observe to do allthese commandments before Adonai our God, as He has

commanded us. (Dt 6:20-25)

HalleluYah. Praise, O servants of Adonai, praise the nameof Adonai. Blessed be the name of Adonai from this timeforth and forevermore. From the rising of the sun until itssetting Adonai's name is to be praised. Adonai is highabove all nations, and His glory above the heavens. Who islike to Adonai our God, who dwells on high, Who humblesHimself to behold the things that are in heaven, and in theearth! He raises up the poor out of the dust, and lifts theneedy out of the dunghill; That He may set him withprinces, even with the princes of His people. He makes thebarren woman to keep house, and to be a joyful mother of

children. HalleluYah. (Ps 113:1-9)

When Israel went out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from apeople of strange language; Judah was His sanctuary, andIsrael His dominion. The sea saw it, and fled: Jordan wasdriven back. The mountains skipped like rams, and thelittle hills like lambs. What ailed you, O sea, that you fled?O Jordan, that you were driven back? O mountains, thatskipped like rams; and little hills, like lambs? Tremble, youearth, at the presence of Adonai, at the presence of the Godof Jacob; Which turned the rock into standing water, the

flint into a fountain of waters. (Ps 114:1-8)

Not to us, O Adonai, not to us, but to Your name giveglory, for Your kindness, and for Your truth. Whereforeshould the heathen say, Where now is their God? But ourGod is in the heavens: He has done whatsoever He haspleased. Their idols are silver and gold, the work of men'shands. They have mouths, but they speak not: eyes havethey, but they see not: They have ears, but they hear not:noses have they, but they smell not: They have hands, butthey handle not: feet have they, but they walk not: neitherspeak they through their throat. They that make them arelike to them; so is every one that trusts in them. O Israel, trust in Adonai: He is their help and their shield. O houseof Aaron, trust in Hashem: He is their help and theirshield. You that fear Adonai, trust in Adonai: He is their

help and their shield.Adonai will bless our memory; he will bless the house ofIsrael; he will bless the house of Aaron. He will blessthem that fear Adonai, both small and great. Adonai shallincrease you more and more, you and your children. Youare blessed of Adonai which made heaven and earth. Theheaven, even the heavens, are Adonai's: but the earth hasHe given to the children of men. The dead praise notHashem, neither any that go down into silence. But wewill bless Hashem from this time forth and forevermore.

O praise Adonai, all you nations: praise Him, all youpeople. For His loving kindness is great toward us: and the

truth of Adonai endures forever. HalleluYah. (Ps 117:1-2)

O, give thanks to Adonai; for He is good:for His kindness endures forever.Praise and thanks unto Adonai

for His kindness endures forever.Let Israel now say,

that His kindness endures forever.Praise and thanks...

Let the house of Aaron now say, that His kindness endures forever.

Praise and thanks...Let them now that fear Adonai say, that His kindness endures forever.

Praise and thanks...I called upon Hashem in distress: Hashem answered me,and set me in a large place. Adonai is on my side; I willnot fear: what can man do to me? Adonai takes my partwith them that help me: therefore shall I see my desireupon them that hate me. It is better to trust in Adonai thanto put confidence in man. It is better to trust in Adonaithan to put confidence in princes. All nations surroundedme: but in the name of Adonai will I destroy them. Theysurrounded me; yea, they surrounded me: but in the nameof Adonai I will destroy them. They surrounded me likebees: they are quenched as the fire of thorns: for in the

name of Adonai I will destroy them.38

You have thrust sore at me that I might fall: but Adonaihelped me. Hashem is my strength and song, and isbecome my salvation. The voice of rejoicing and salvationis in the tabernacles of the righteous: the right hand ofAdonai does valiantly. The right hand of Adonai isexalted: the right hand of Adonai does valiantly. I shallnot die, but live, and declare the works of Hashem.Hashem has chastened me sore: but he has not given meover to death. Open to me the gates of righteousness: Iwill go into them, and I will HalleluYah: This is the gateof Adonai, the righteous shall enter into it. I will praiseyou: for you have heard me, and become a salvation forme. The stone which the builders refused is become thehead stone of the corner. This is Adonai's doing; it ismarvelous in our eyes. This is the day which Adonai has

made; we will rejoice and be glad in it!

We beseech You, O Adonai, save please!

We beseech You, O Adonai, send prosperity please!

Blessed be he that comes in the name of Adonai: we haveblessed you out of the house of Adonai. God is Adonai, who has shown us light: bind the sacrifice with cords, even to the horns of the altar. You are my God, and I willpraise You: You are my God, I will exalt You. O, givethanks to Adonai; for He is good: for His loving mercy

endures forever. (Ps 118:1-29)

Adonai will grant strength to His people;

Adonai will bless His people with peace. (Ps 29:11)

Blessed be Adonai forevermore. Amen, and Amen.

(Ps 89:53)
