New global engine platform ensures optimum performance for all operators Scania today offers the widest range of heavy-duty trucks in the market. From 2012 they will all be powered by a global range of engines that will be used worldwide for all emission standards – Euro 3, Euro 4, Euro 5, EEV and Euro 6. European markets also have access to an extended range of Euro 5 and EEV engines with SCR technology. The engines can operate on up to 100% biodiesel.

The new engines are used globally for all emission standards. Scania's two initial Euro 6 engines (440 and 480 hp) feature a combination of EGR and SCR technology and are suitable for long-haulage and construction work. The range of sixteen Euro 5 engines spans from 230 to 620 hp. Eleven EEV engines between 230 and 730 hp include one ethanol and two gas/biogas versions. Scania customers can choose between EGR and SCR technology, provided that low-sulphur fuel (less than 10 ppm) is available in the market. For Euro 4 markets, the range comprises nine engines between 250 and 620 hp, all based on SCR technology. Seven Euro 3 engines from 250 to 580 hp complete Scania's global customer offering. Focus on fuel efficiency and uptime Scania traditionally has a leading position in terms of low fuel consumption and long service life. The new global engine platform was developed from there, taking robustness to new levels in preparation for the tough demands of future emission legislation, e.g. the higher combustion pressures required for Euro 5 and Euro 6. Numerous refinements have been introduced since the launch of the new engine platform in 2007 and they are now incorporated across the range. Revisions include improvements on the intake and exhaust manifolds, EGR system, turbochargers, pistons and cylinder liners. The liners are now plasma coated instead of honed for lower friction and extended service life. Scania's SCR (selective catalytic reduction) aftertreatment systems have also developed in several steps since the introduction in 2006. The injectors for the urea solution have been upgraded to prevent the clogging sometimes experienced in early models. Performance and driver appeal The well-known high performance of Scania trucks results from several factors related to the engine’s characteristics and the matching of the powertrain as a whole. This also contributes to their popularity among drivers. The latest engines have a torque-to-power ratio of around 5, which in combination with a carefully matched gearbox and rear axle ratio, results in very good driveability. Full torque is generally delivered from as low as 1,000 r/min, which means that the engines have a wide useful rev band and that gearchanges are kept to a minimum. In addition, the engines respond rapidly to the driver’s commands in all situations. This signals to the driver that the vehicle is on top of its task, with a surplus of power available whenever needed. High torque at low revs makes it possible to optimise the powertrain for low fuel consumption without any loss of performance. Gearing a long-haulage vehicle for highway cruising at 1,100-1,200 r/min is ideal and, in combination with automated gearchanging, helps the driver to extract the most from every drop of fuel.

All of this and the behaviour of the truck as a whole combines into the driver appeal inherent in any Scania truck. A driver who is comfortable with the way the truck performs will do a better job and treat the truck accordingly, which in turn has the potential of reducing repair and fuel costs. TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS Typical Scania engine architecture Although it is a new design, the inline engine platform retains traditional Scania traits like separate cylinder heads, camshaft located high in the block and rear-mounted timing gears, as well as the familiar centrifugal oil cleaner. The entire design is modular and conceived for easy servicing and maximum uptime for operators. In addition, the need for training of workshop staff is significantly reduced since the basic architecture remains the same as before. Scania's 5-cylinder engine concept has earned a strong reputation since its introduction in 2004. For these new 9.3-litre engines, the bore and stroke are 130x140 mm. Twin balance shafts in the sump make the engines smooth and flexible in operation. The new 12.7-litre 6-cylinder engines follow up on the strong reputation established by their 11.7-litre predecessors. The new engines have the same bore as the 9.3-litre engines (130 mm), but a longer stroke (160 mm). The use of a common bore means that a large number of parts and components are shared within the new engine range, significantly reducing the number of unique

parts needed and facilitating repairs and parts supply. Many parts and components are also shared with the V8 engines. Compared to the 8.9- and 11.7-litre inline engines, the cylinder block and other structural components have been redesigned for additional strength, without the need for special grades of steel. Electronically controlled unit injectors are used for fuel supply on Euro 3 and SCR engines (Euro 4, Euro 5, EEV) and the conventional turbocharger – set up for plenty of boost pressure starting from low revs – provides typical Scania driveability. The exhaust brake has been revamped with more precise control and better low-speed performance. On Euro 5 EGR and Euro 6 engines, common-rail fuel injection is used in combination with a variable geometry turbocharger. Established emission technology In 2007, Scania took the lead when offering Euro 5 engines using only EGR technology. The use of EGR without the need for additives means weight and space savings on the chassis. Scania’s solution, featuring common-rail fuel injection and variable-geometry turbocharging, means that Euro 5 can deliver high fuel efficiency, without incurring a fuel penalty compared to equivalent SCR solutions.

Scania's Euro 5 EGR engines are sold in markets where the fuel fulfils the requirements for Euro 5 compliance, i.e. with a sulphur level that does not exceed 10 ppm (parts per million).

Scania SCR

All new Euro 4 and Euro 5/EEV engines use SCR (selective catalytic reduction) to meet the standards, a technology offered by Scania for Euro 4 and Euro 5 since 2006. With SCR, a urea solution (AdBlue) mixed with air is injected into the exhaust flow in the silencer to reduce the formation of NOx (nitrogen oxides) to the required levels. During the chemical reaction, ammonium and nitrogen oxides are converted to harmless nitrogen and water vapour. AdBlue is contained in a separate tank on the chassis. Depending on application, 50- or 75-litre tanks can be specified and the amount of AdBlue required for Euro 5 compliance is 5-7% of the fuel consumed, and somewhat less for Euro 4. The use of SCR allows combustion in the engine to be optimised for low fuel consumption, despite significantly lower emissions of hazardous substances. Biodiesel The vast majority of Scania diesel engines can operate on up to 100% biodiesel (FAME fuel according to EN14214), contributing to a useful reduction of CO2 emissions. Running on 100% biodiesel will reduce CO2 emissions by around 35%. Unique bioethanol engine Scania is alone in offering a high-efficiency ethanol engine operating with compression ignition according to the diesel principle, which is more efficient than combustion according to the Otto principle. The thermal efficiency of this 8.9-litre unit is similar to that of a diesel engine, i.e. 44-45%. In addition, the engine features typical diesel engine performance and driveability: 270 hp and 1,200 Nm at 1,100-1,400 r/min Ethanol is the most widely used biofuel globally. Sugar cane ethanol, produced in Brazil for example, has good environmental properties, reducing CO2 emissions by 70% compared to fossil diesel fuel. Scania has been producing ethanol engines for heavy vehicles since 1990, with excellent environmental gains for example in Stockholm’s city buses, and this latest 5-cylinder incarnation is the third generation.

Gas engines with diesel-like performance Scania's latest generation of gas engines, which is designed to run on biogas as well as natural gas, provides performance characteristics similar to diesel engines: 270 hp and 1,100 Nm at 1,000-1,400 r/min 305 hp and 1,250 Nm at 1,000-1,400 r/min The engines are tailored for distribution and refuse collection – including low-entry cab configurations – as well as city bus operation, with a broad choice of configurations for each. The modular in-house design allows customary Scania levels of parts and service support, operating economy and a long service life. Running on biogas will cut CO2 emissions by up to 90 percent.
