ANNUAL PICNICTBA
Volume 28, Issue 3 January-February 2020
Greetings from Dan Taylor, President As we enter 2020, New Frontiers for Lifelong Learning continues to provide a diverse array of classes, volunteer opportunities and ways to enhance personal growth. This year the Fall General Membership meeting on November 1st featured Elton Bordenave, Director of Aging and Resiliency at A.T. Still Health Science University. He talked about Fall Prevention. A.T. Still sponsors over 50 classes on Matter of Balance throughout the Valley. You should have already received the PDF listing or you can go to this link (https://www.atsu.edu/ag-ing-studies-project/course-schedule.html). Please call the location of your choice as class sizes are limited.
In addition, we have recently sent out an online survey so we can learn from you. Please take the time to fill it out as it will help direct us as we move into 2020. New Frontiers currently has 381 members and we want you all to be our ambassadors. Please help us spread the word about the outstanding classes and activities that we offer throughout the year. Invite interested persons to attend our next Open House on January 24th at Red Mountain Community College. We would love to have a big crowd and add 100 new members to our organization.
The success of New Frontiers is truly due to our dedicated corps of over 100 volun-teers who plan programs, teach and facilitate classes, etc. If you are interested in volunteering in any capacity, just contact the office at [email protected].

The FARMERS MARKET on MCC Red Mountain Acacia VillageOn a sunny November Saturday morning, Mary Kay and I visited the Farmers Market on the MCC Red Mountain Acacia Village. The market was started in October 2018 by MCC alumnus Ryan Alarie, and has been operating since then, each Saturday morning, 8am to1pm, from October to April.
In creating this Market, Ryan wanted to answer the needs of the local community for healthy food and fresh produce.About 50 artisan vendors and a food truck were present that morning, offering a variety of goods ranging from fresh farm, bakery products to spices, and even jewelry. The market was very busy.
Ryan and his associate Boomer, explained that they rent the place from MCC and that in exchange they contribute a per-centage of their revenue from the Market toward MCC student scholarships, to the level of ten thousand dollars a year.
Interestingly, one of the booths in the Market is devoted to MCC. Today, the booth was operated by Alyne Lijewski, an MCC Red Mountain administrator in charge of a Special Health Care Program. This program offers a 2 year Dental Hygiene program, an 8 week Nurse Assistant program and, starting in January 2020, an Emergency Medical Technology (EMT 104) program.
Mrs Lijewski was here today to inform the public about MCC, enrollment, classes, transfer of credits to ASU, UA, NAU, GCU, upcoming campus events and distribution of free food by the United Food bank. She even had information about NF!
We left in awe about what had been accomplished there: a symbiosis between the College and the community, the College providing space for the Market, the Market contributing to student scholarships and to information about the College and NF.
It may be a good idea, in the future, to use this Market as a relay for NF outreach.

Soleri Bell Foundry Tour Thursday, Jan.16, 2020 at 11:00 AM 6433 E. Doubletree Ranch Rd. Paradise Valley, AZ 85253
A visit to the Cosanti Bronze Foundry is a bit like stepping back into the 1960s. According to the Cosanti website, the foundry, in Paradise Valley, AZ was the residence and sculpture studio of Italian- American artist Paolo Soleri and his staff. Soleri (later joined by his students) began work on experimental buildings in the mid-1950s.
Designated as an Arizona Historic Site, Cosanti presents a unique bio-climatic architectural environment. Its structures fea-ture many imaginative design elements, reflecting innovative construction techniques.
• The word “Cosanti” is made up of two Italian words: cosa and anti. Translated, the name means “before (or against) things,” a reference to Soleri’s anti-materialist stance.
• Soleri’s unique, experimental, imaginative buildings made in the ‘50s are fun to visit and add a layer of education and interest to your visit to the foundry.
• Soleri himself was a character, known not just for his art and architecture but also for his philosophy.
Some of the paths are not paved and are uneven so it may be a little hard for people with canes.
There is a charge of $15.00 per person (make checks out to Helen Dodds.) The deadline is 01/9/20 and checks need to be sent to:

ANNUAL HOLIDAY PARTYThe Annual Holiday Party was held at the Mesa Country Club. Attendance was at an all time high. Donations to the United Food Bank ($648) and to the Mesa Market were very generous. Great entertainment was provided by Dave Webb and Steve Weitz. As usual, some lucky members won beautiful quilts and wreaths donated by Janice Overdorff, Karen Warwick, Joan Hancock and Judy Henderson.
A special thank you to the Social Committee who organized this successful Party and especially to its chair, Margaret Schulz.
Additional pictures of the Holiday Party can be seen on the NF Website under Shared Photos.

Travel ClubIsabelle Main and Marie-France Ganansia are co-chairs of the newborn Travel Committee which was started last summer by Marlin Fried. The committee wishes to revive the interest of NF in local, regional, national and international travel.
Isabelle Main is currently studying the possibility of a several day trip to Southern Arizona. The San Xavier del Bac mission will be part of it, as suggested by Ruth Brooks, Chair of the Curriculum Committee. Stay tuned.
East Valley Healthy Living Expo, Nov 13 A great amount of information about New Frontiers for Lifelong Learning was given out at the booth table that Dan Scarpone and Caroline Cline set up at the “Healthy Living” Expo on November 13 at the Mesa Convention Center. During the 4 hour show, well over 200 people stopped to take flyers and brochures, asked questions and listened to explanations. Thanks to Dan Taylor and Isabelle Main who helped take care of the crowded times.
Fall General membership meeting, Nov 1, 2019 Doctor Elton Bordenave, Director of Aging and Resiliency at A.T. Still Health Science University, was the presenter of a very informative lecture on Fall Prevention.
Fall Prevention classes will begin January 17, 2020, among other locations throughout the Valley, at the MCC Red Mountain campus. It will be an 8 week session with a limit of 15 participants for each class.
A flyer will be sent for registration information.
RECOVERINGAs many of you probably know, our seasoned hiker, Sue Hite, suffered a badly broken ankle after a fall at her home. A few weeks after ankle surgery, Sue was the victim of a car accident which resulted in multiple trauma including fractured vertebrae. We are in touch with her as she is slowly recovering.Sue is showing amazing resilience as evidenced by her own words: “ I will not let the pains control my life, but rather, remember to be thankful for yet another chance given.”
Sue received two get-well-soon cards from our Sunshine lady, Diana Pierce.
We all wish Sue a prompt recovery.
