NEW FOREST RUNNERS RAG

AUGUST 2008 / SEPTEMBER 2008

PRESIDENT’S REPORT. Our club has been very busy over the past two months and we are now entering a quieter time in both the social and racing calendar. At the beginning of June, Clive Nightingale was in action again, organising our Biathlon, which ran very smoothly if a little down in numbers of New Forest Runners. Then we congratulated our men’s racing team who successfully won promotion to the top Hants Road Running League and who are now also lying second in the RR10s. Please keep up the good work. I was delighted to see the new club banners, organised by Martin, to act as a club rallying point at races, both home and away. Thank you Martin! Friday 13th June proved to be very lucky for the 31 club members who travelled to the Truleigh Hill Youth Hostel, for a fantastic weekend of walking, eating, drinking and laughing. See the photo in the club house and Sylvia’s report inside this Runners Rag. Thank you Sylvia for organising it and Jack for the evening quiz. Our efforts to field a Senior Relay Team for the 10 mile of miles fell short and we were lucky to be helped out by our superb Junior Team. Thank you once again Derrick for lending them to us. We were all saddened to hear of Brian Davey’s heart attack and relieved to know that he is on the mend. We wish him well and understand he is now home and convalescing. Hopefully then it won’t be long before he can return to the Mudlarks. About 85 members took part in the Alternative 10 on the 12th July and I would like to thank Clive for organising it so well. After the race we all enjoyed a superb B.B.Q. put on by Tony Taylor and Paul Pocock. The following day saw us all in action once again at the New Forest 10. This time it was the Silver Jubilee and we had near record entries, which in itself is a reflection on how popular the successful this race has become. Our warmest congratulations must go to Mike Smith and his committee for all the hard work put in during the year that resulted in another very enjoyable weekend. A special thanks also to all our club members, who helped on the Saturday and Sunday. Well done everyone! On behalf of the 40 members who went to the Isle of Wight on Sunday 20th July, I would like to thank Sylvia for organising the Club walk which turned out to be such an enjoyable day for all of us. You can read her report in this Rag. Last, but by no means least, we say farewell to Uncle Ron in his role as Captain of Novices. Many of our members started with the club under Ron’s tuition and encouragement and, on behalf of them and all the club, I would like to thank him very much for all the hard work and devotion he has put in over the past 14 years. I am pleased to report that Angela Coubrough has agreed to accept responsibility for the training of the novices next year. I am sure we all wish her well in her task and give her our full support. That’s all for now – Enjoy your running. Peter Coupland. Some sad news has just come in. We would like to offer our sincere condolences to Kieran Holland who sadly lost his son, Jim, this week. Our thoughts are with him at this time of great sorrow.

THE SOCIAL SCENE

Please make a note in your diary for the forthcoming Dinner Dance to be held at Tyrell’s Ford Country Hotel on Friday 30th January 2009. Menus and booking forms will be in the next Runners Rag. We need early bookings this year please.

TRULEIGH HILL WAS TRULEIGH SCRUMPTIOUS

Several Club members had a lovely weekend at the YHA Truleigh Hill in June. Thank you all who supported the event. The weather was just lovely and everyone had a great time.

31 of us took over the Youth Hostel which was situated on the South Downs Way with beautiful views to the English Channel. We were lucky to be looked after by two very caring managers.

We all met at the Hostel on the Friday evening and dined on a fish and chip supper from the Shoreham chippy, still in the paper.

On Saturday after a cooked breakfast, we walked along the South Downs Way with beautiful views and just fantastic weather. The last part of the walk was down through the Devils Dyke when we eventually came to the village of Poynting to The Oak for a scrumptious lunch. The walk back afterwards was longer, starting off flat but finishing on a strenuous and hilly climb back to the hostel.

That evening was spent having an indoor barbeque followed by one of Jack Macdonald’s (not so easy) quizzes, with the first prize going to Chris and Brian and Chris Macdonald.

On Sunday, after another cooked breakfast, we set off under more sunny skies for another super walk, stopping for coffee high above the Downs and to watch the hang gliders as they launched themselves off the hill tops. After about an hour we then headed down to Fulking for a Sunday roast lunch; and then walked back to the Hostel to our cars to head for home.

Everything went off well, with Lawrie’s super photo on the Notice Board at Fawcett’s Field to prove it too.

ISLE OF WIGHT WALK – SUNDAY 20TH JULY

40 members came on this walk and it was enjoyed by all. The weather was lovely, a calm sailing to Yarmouth then a choice of a 4 or 6 mile walk, starting along the old railway track then each diverting but with both routes meeting up again to travel along the top of the Tennyson Trail, giving views of both the North and the South coasts. Just fantastic scenery plus blue skies and sunshine too.

We lunched at a superb pub in Hulverston village, then returned by foot or by a scenic bus route to Yarmouth, for a cream tea, ice cream and shopping. Thank you to all who supported this walk, it was worth all the organisation that went on beforehand.

Sylvia Coupland.

21st/22nd June 2008: Couldn’t resist another “Challenge”

The article in the Trailrunner magazine made it sound so inviting – a weekend festival of trail running near Aberystwyth, in the hills of mid-Wales, for ‘runners of all levels and abilities’.

But the devil is always in the detail (literally in this case): the Red Kite challenge of 11+ miles was on Saturday, and included the UK short-course trail running championship; followed by Sunday’s event, the Ras y Diafol (Race the Devil) – a mere 18 miles, starting from Devils Bridge. There was the option of doing this as a 3-stage relay, but almost everyone seemed to be planning to do the whole thing. I entered for both events, but not soon enough to plan any proper training. A couple of times I managed to run the 7 miles from Bransgore to Wilverley prior to the usual 10-ish Mudlarks morning run, but that was all. Not exactly your marathon-style build-up! Alec decided he could not get fit enough to run the hills, so came as supporter (chauffeur, bag-carrier etc).

We arrived in Wales on the Friday, and booked in at the camp site at Devils Bridge where the Sunday race start and finish would be (very convenient). The weekend weather forecast was horrendous and we were anxiously aware of the heavy showers drumming on our roof in the night. But a peek out of the curtains in the morning was encouraging – overcast, but no clouds down on the hills.

Only a short morning drive to the Saturday race start at the Red Kite visitor centre – the race didn’t start till 1pm, but the weekend included trail walks as well as runs, and these started earlier, so we wanted to be sure of getting a parking spot for the campervan.

The race started with a deceptively easy circuit of a small lake, but then it was straight into the zig-zag up the steep hillside, and then continuously up and down with no respite. There was a surprising lack of real mud, but lots of loose shale on the tracks – especially on the mountain-bike circuit, which also included lots of those little humps which the cyclists love. The weather was actually clear enough to appreciate the views from the tops across to the sea. We had been told that if we finished in under 2 hours, we would be in time to see the regular feeding of the red kites at 3pm. As I came down the last hill, I could see so many of them swooping around – they obviously knew dinner was due.

I was 1st fv60, and was presented with a small wooden plaque, and a gymkhana-style rosette (not sure where to pin that), and also a medal for the trailrunning championship. Then everyone retired to conserve their strength for the next day – or alternatively, walked to the pub for the evening as we did.

Next morning dawned bright and breezy – or rather, blowing a gale. I joined the small group of runners for the race start at the camp-site reception, wondering if my tired legs would even get me up the first mile on the road. As soon as it started uphill, my race-plan kicked in – walk all the ups. Fortunately there were several others in a similar frame of mind, and I fell in with a group of 3 guys going at a similar pace, and we had a very sociable run/walk. The route was very well marked with tapes and signs, and frequent drinks stations with jelly-babies and sultanas to keep us going. The finish at the campsite was right next to our campervan, and as I ran the final section through the field (yes, I could still manage a run!), Alec was already putting on the kettle.

Although my time was extremely slow, I got 1st fv60 again; a prize holdall for the race, and a cut-glass goblet for the combined 2-race challenge.

It’s a pity there were not more entries – I guess some people were put off by the weather forecast, and the cost of fuel to get there. It was a well-organised event, and extremely friendly, and I would definitely do it again, even though my quads were still aching days later.

Some stats: Saturday: 52nd of 95 finishers (10th female) in 1h:49m:25s; winning time 1h:14m:50s Sunday: 24th of 35 finishers (6th female) in 3h:18m:39s; winning time 2h:14m:23s

According to my GPS we climbed a total of 3,200 feet on Saturday, and 5,400 feet on Sunday. That’s a lot, even if not very accurate. For comparison, Snowdon is only 3,500 feet above sea level. No wonder the legs ached!

Children in Need 2008

Consideration is being to organising a Team Relay Event for this year’s Children in Need Appeal. Details have still to be finalised and a venue confirmed, but in the meantime please note that we have scheduled Sunday, 23rd November for this event. Further information at a later date but please keep the date free and come and join in the fun!

Dinner Dance

As already advised, this is to be held on Friday, 30th January 2009 at the Tyrrells Ford Hotel. Keep a look out for the usual Booking Form in due course.

L’angolo del Capitano

I’d like to begin with applauding all those who have competed in the RR10 series to date, especially after the contrasting weather conditions of the last two events. At the time of writing, the men’s teams are lying in 2nd

place overall with the ladies in 5th place. At Janesmoor Pond there were a record 55 competitors from the club, with the men’s team finishing in 1st place and the Ladies team in 5th place. Well done everyone! Only two more to go!

The new schedules for the Hampshire Road Running and X-Country Leagues are listed within this rag and I urge everyone to try and compete in as many of the events as possible. The men’s team did really well to get promotion into the first division last season so please help us to try and stay there. It doesn’t matter how fast you can run, your entry and best effort is all that’s required!

As most of you are aware, Ron has decided to step down from leading the Novices group, and I thank him personally for all his hard work over the years. Angela Coubrough and Jo Szwinto have kindly volunteered to take over next year, however, we would like two gentlemen to also volunteer their services. This would enable us to hold two groups within the Novices: one for the slower runners and one for the quicker guys. If anyone is interested in helping could you please contact either Angela, Jo or myself.

Finally, I shall be holding the second Coach/Group Leader meeting in the Fawcetts Field front bar at 7.30pm on the 11th August. The main aim of these meetings is to improve the level and quality of training within the club, so, if you are interested in, or even just thinking of becoming a Group Leader, or maybe a coach, then please come along. The more people the better!

Enjoy your running.

News Reports: Lady Runners Move Up a Gear The New Forest Runners ladies team moved up a gear in the 4th RR10 race of the season, held at Deer Leap Inclosure, Ashurst on on May 28th. Despite wet and muddy conditions, the team of Erica Fogg (4th), Jo Ward (8th) and Becky Hollowbread (12th) finished runners-up to Winchester AC amongst the 30 ladies teams. This moves the team up into 4th place in the league overall with 6 races yet to run over the summer months. There were also strong runs by Rhona Copp (16th), Gail Walters (21st), Noreen Henderson (45th), Caroline Eaton (46th), Heidi Ramsier(48th) and Lucy Godwin (49th). The men had a good night too, with an in-form Lee Rodrigues winning the race in a field of 300 runners. Lee currently leads the overall individual league table, after a 2nd and 3rd in previous races. Together with Henry Szwinto (11th), Sanjai Sharma (26th), John Walgrove (34th) and Paul Bartlett (36th), the men's team finished in 3rd place out of 52 teams and retain their 3rd place overall in the league Over on the Isle of Wight, the New Forest Runners men were runners-up in the Needles half marathon on Sunday1st June. Howard Doe (9th), Rhys Henderson (19th) Neil Richardson (39th) and Richard Gears (45th) were the top finishers for the club amongst 135 competitors. Maggie Kirk also had a fine run, finishing 9th for the ladies and Rhona Copp was 2nd lady.. Mike Ryan, Claire Smith, Hilary Walsgrove and Lynn Kendall went the whole distance by completing the full marathon. Further north Michael McCabe and Gary Sanford finished a windswept Edinburgh Marathon on 25th

June. Michael, who is president of the AYE (All Years Edinburgh) Club for those who have run every Edinburgh Marathon, commented: "This was one of the hardest because we were into the wind for most of the first 18 miles. The number of runners in the AYE Club has shrunk from 74 to 67 this year".

The New Forest Runners junior team achieved an excellent 7th place in the annual "Miles of Miles" relay held at University Fields, Eastleigh on 18th June. They completed the 10 x 1 mile race ahead of seven senior teams and were only one place behind their own senior club team. Despite a cold and windy evening, junior captain Paul Bartlett set them up with a strong 5:21 opening leg, handing over to Betsy Morton who completed the double circuit in 6:38. The youngest team member, 13-year old Olly Harvey, ran leg 6 in their fastest time of 5:18 and Rob Ellis brought them home with 6:06. Junior coaches Derrick Burgess and Steve Morton agreed: "Every one of the team contributed to a fine result. Maybe the juniors can even beat the seniors next year". The senior team, despite being holders of the "Miles of Miles" trophy between 2003 and 2006, could not manage better than 6th out of 14 in 60:38 despite the fastest club run of 5:15 by captain Phil Handy."Maybe we'll win it again when the juniors become seniors", he suggested. Team Southampton won the race in 52:24 and will host the relay in 2009. Junior Results Paul Bartlett 5:21, Betsy Morton 6:38, Dan Jones 5:43, Connor Morton 6:08, Sophie Rooker 7:26, Olly Harvey 5:18, Nick Jones 7:39, Jess Jones 7:11, Jaime Morton 6:56, Rob Ellis 6:06, TOTAL = 64:26 Senior Results Michael McCabe 5:35, Will Harvey 5:27, Phil Handy 5:15, Steve Morton 5:30, Caroline Eaton 6:56 Wayne Adlem 5:41, David Ellis 6:29, Yvette Jones 8:05, Paul Bartlett 5:21, Steve Goodwin 6:19 TOTAL = 60:38

Experience Overcomes Youth in Alternative 10 The "Alternative" New Forest 10 mile race turned into a battle between the experience of Henry Szwinto and the youth of Frank Handy. They led the field of 91 New Forest Runners who ran the New Forest 10 course on Saturday 12th July as a curtain-raiser for the main event on the following Sunday. Szwinto managed to pull away around the 7 mile mark to finish in 60:40, ahead of Handy by 49 seconds. Howard Doe claimed third in 63:48 with Sanjai Sharma finishing 4th and first vet-40 in 64:47. There were fine runs by Valeria Sesto (1st lady), Rhona Copp (1st lady vet-40), Noreen Henderson (1st lady vet-50), Rosemarie Osborne (1st lady vet-60) and for the men by John Hunt (1st vet-60) and Vince Gargaro (1st vet-70).A total of 893 runners finished the main New Forest 10 on the Sunday with Mark Le Gassick of Stubbington Green the clear winner in a fast 53:02. The race generated £2500 for local charities last year and race director Mike Smith was hopeful that this total could be exceeded after another successful running of the event. 8

A few words from the New Forest ’10’ Race Director

Well another race has been run and judging from the feedback received it ran very successfully.

So a collective pat on the back for the New Forest ‘10’ committee (Jilly Picket, Lisa Pavitt, Pauline Breeze, John Howlett, Graham Penneck, Alan Benjafield, Andy Phimister and Peter Harwood, David Fairburn, Gill Turkin and Clive Nightingale) who have been working upon this all year and whose hard work has certainly paid off.

Also, a huge thank you to the wonderful folk who turned up on Saturday morning to help erect the course and the 130 members, families and friends who turned out to marshal and manage the event.

This is the first time we have sold out and been forced to turn away entries. The entry limit of 1200 (based on only 1000 turning up and running) was reached at the start of June. Being voted the 17th best race in the country obviously pulls in the crowds.

The course was quickly and expertly assembled upon the Saturday morning and a decision made to replace all of the older wooden signs for future events with lighter and more easily erected alternatives. Kevyn Doolan wiped a tear from his eye as he reminisced upon helping to make the original wooden signs some 20 years ago, but agreed it was time for a change and a fresh look to the event.

Clive Nightingale and Tony Taylor’s organisation of the Alternative ‘10’ saw it run smoothly with 90 people taking part (Allegedly a few people got PB’s on the course). An unexpected “wrong key” incident added to excitement of the event, but was resolved swiftly.

Paul Pocock’s “Bigger than the Biggest and Best BBQ” exceeded the (already heightened) expectations of the crowds and was followed by the marquee party that finished very, very late. Possibly due to a record number of people camping on the field overnight.

Sunday started in glorious sunshine, providing an excuse for the late night revellers to don sunglasses legitimately. The day came together and the events came and went to the backdrop of a carnival atmosphere on the field. We had over 200 entries for the fun runs, which appeared to be enjoyed by everyone.

Potential problems were resolved with ease as club members demonstrated their flexibility and versatility. Wayne and Alan fixed the generator for the finish arch between races and Cathy Pascoe unexpectedly leapt into the spotlight of being the lead cyclist as Neil succumbed to a puncture at fiveways.

The winner of the 10 mile finished in 53:02, which is a new course record for the revised route and overall 895 people completed the race.

As the last few competitors of the ‘10’ were coming in, the pressure eased and I took the opportunity to look around and talk to a few competitors, they were universal in their praise for the organisation, marshalling and atmosphere of the event and will all be coming again next year!

Once again, the New Forest Runners have succeeded in putting on a high quality and popular event of which we can all be rightly proud. So thank you and well done to everyone.

Regards

Mike Smith, New Forest ’10’ Race Director.
