Measuring your room

Once you’ve got your samples in hand, it’s a good idea to measure your room, so you know just how much flooring you’ll need.

Rectangular rooms can be calculated easily by multiplying the length by width (example 1). If your room is L-shaped, has alcoves or bay windows, you need to divide your room into separate areas. Add these together to come to your final quantity (example 2).

(A x B) + (C x D) = total quantity required Eg: (2m x 8m) + (1.5m x 2.5m) = 19.75m2

Click or stick? At UK Flooring Direct, we’ve two main types of installation: traditional tongue and groove, which requires gluing or nailing, and click profiles that allow the floor to be clicked together for a much easier and faster installation.

Deciding on the right floor

Your samples will give you a great indication of the quality, texture and colour of your floor, but there are a few practical differences to also consider.

While your heart might yearn for a real wood floor, it may not be the most practical option. For those of us with busy family lives, or where a floor that’s easy to live with is the important thing, it’s certainly worth thinking about laminate or luxury click vinyl.

Plank width explainedGetting the right size

We make it easy to pick your ideal width. All of our floors are either narrow, classic, wide or extra-wide.

Narrow (0-114mm)Best for small rooms such as spare bedrooms and hallways.

Classic (115-160mm)A great choice for most rooms in average size homes.

Wide & extra-wide(161-200mm & 201mm+)Best used for big rooms in large family homes.

The length and width of the plank has an impact on how your room will look.

Not only will the dimensions of the plank contribute to the mood of your room, but the

length and width will also affect the sense of space. Narrow and short planks will make small rooms appear bigger, while wide and long planks are best suited for larger rooms, as they will appear less fussy over a bigger area.

Choose wider and longer planks if you have a large room.

Choose narrower and shorter planks if you have a small room.

Making the most of light

Choosing the right finish

Remember that a dark floor may look great next to vibrant fabrics and strong wall colours, but it will also make a space feel smaller, so dark shades are best avoided in small rooms.

A dark floor will make any room feel smaller,so it is a look best used in larger rooms.

A light floor will make small rooms feel more spacious and can help to brighten spaces.

Not only will your interior decoration dictate whether you have a light or dark floor, so will the level of natural daylight and size of your room.

While our laminate and luxury click vinyl floors feature an easy care surface, the real wood finishes on our engineered and solid wood floors can alter the look and care of the floor.

Oiled finishes provide a degree of protection, though spills need to be quickly removed with a suitable cleaner - see page 95.

A lacquered finish forms a coat on the surface, protecting it from wear and making it easier to clean up spills.

Spills ‘sit’ on the surface of the lacquer coat, making them easier to remove.

Spills ‘seep’ through on oiled floors making them more susceptible to staining.

Oiled finishesOiled floors have a natural appearance that develops a beautiful character over time. With proper care, UV surfaces can keep their natural looks for years.

Lacquered finishesForming a barrier to scratches and spills, lacquered floors have a slight-sheen to the surface. This barrier means they require less attention than oiled floors.

Colour explained The tone of your floor will define the mood of your room.

Light tones give a light and minimalist look, while also helping your room to feel lighter and bigger, making them a great choice for smaller rooms or those with little natural light. Dark tones add a sense of drama and character to the home, while neutral tones, somewhere in the middle of light and dark are true all-rounders.

Light floors help to create a sense of space. In rooms with small windows, or low levels of daylight, lighter coloured floors should really be chosen to make the room feel brighter.

Engineered and solid wood floors are divided into grades based on how many surface markings they display. The features considered when grading wood include: the number and size of knots; the amount of sap present in the wood and its colour variation. The smaller the knots, the lower the sap content and the more uniform the colour, the higher the grade of wood.

Select grades are the highest grade of flooring. They feature a grain where there is little variation in appearance, with no sapwood for less pronounced colour variation and only a few pinhole knots for a floor that has a clean look. This grade of flooring is the most expensive as it is in limited supply from the raw material.

Nature grades are the classic grade of timber. They feature a grain with natural variation, limited

mineral streaks, occasional sapwood and occasional small and medium sized knots for a floor perfect for those seeking a classic look.

Rustic grades are vibrant and colourful floor full of character and excitement. They feature a lively grain with swirling pattern, colour variation, small mineral streaks, sapwood and knots of all sizes for a floor that has a rustic look.

Character grades offer the most variation and charm. They feature a grain alive with a large amount of colour variation and featuring mineral streaks, river cracks, sapwood and unlimited knots of all sizes, with filler, for a floor with character.

Cleaning & MaintenanceSolid wood floors need more care and attention than laminate, but the results are well worth it, as a floor that is properly looked after will stay in great condition for many years and develop greater character as it ages.

For daily cleaning, vacuuming or regular sweeping with a soft-bristled broom will help keep a hardwood floor free of dirt that can scratch or dull floors if allowed to build up.

It is also good to keep wet mopping to a minimum, but if necessary it’s best to use our Unika Laminate and Wood Floor mop. In addition,

rather than water we recommend that you use our Unika Laminate and Wood Daily Cleaner for lacquered floors, which leaves a protective film and enhances the grain and for oiled floors, we recommend that you use our Woca Soap Spray, which has nourishing properties that protect against dirt and liquids.

For best results we offer Woca Care and Protect kits (available for Oiled floors and for Lacquered floors). These kits contain everything you need to clean and protect your floor including an everyday cleaning soap, an intensive cleaner, cloth and applicator pad. This is a must have for anyone wanting to keep their floor looking like new.
