Grant, O Lord, we beseech thee: that the course of this world may be so peaceably ordered by thy governance; that thy Church may joyfully serve thee in all godly quietness; through Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.
First Reading Ezekiel 2:2-5
In those days: The Spirit entered into me and set me upon my feet; and I heard him speaking to me. And he said to me, “Son of man, I send you to the sons of Isra-el, to a nation of rebels, who have rebelled against me; they and their fathers have transgressed against me to this very day. The people also are impudent and stub-born: I send you to them; and you shall say to them, 'Thus says the Lord GOD.' And whether they hear or refuse to hear (for they are a rebellious house) they will know that there has been a prophet among them.”
PSALM 123:1-4
R/. Our eyes look to the Lord,
till he have mercy upon us.
To you I lift up my eyes, O you who are enthroned in the heavens!
Behold, as the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master. R/.
As the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes look to the Lord our God, till he have mercy upon us. R/.
Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us, for we have had more than enough of
contempt. Too long our soul has been sated
with the scorn of those who are at ease, the contempt of the proud. R/.
Second Reading 2 Corinthians 12:7-10
Brethren: To keep me from being too elated by the abundance of revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan, to harass me, to keep me from being too elated. Three times I begged the Lord about this, that it should leave; but he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made per-fect in weakness." I will all the more gladly boast of my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest up-on me. For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and ca-lamities; for when I am weak, then I am strong.

THE HOLY GOSPEL Mark 6:1-6
Jesus came to his own country; and his disciples followed him. And on the sabbath he began to teach in the synagogue; and many who heard him were astonished, saying, "Where did this man get all this? What is the wisdom given to him? What mighty works are wrought by his hands! Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary and brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon, and are not his sisters here with us?" And they took offense at him. And Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor, except in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house." And he could do no mighty work there, except that he laid his hands upon a few sick people and healed them. And he marveled because of their unbelief. And he went about among the villages teaching.

On Further Reflection
Independence Day Fr. Timothy Perkins
Some have asked what we celebrate this year on this occasion. So many things that have happened in our country recently provoke more frustration than cele-bration for the faithful. Well, I like to celebrate. So I have been thinking about a reason to do so.
There are so many reasons to rejoice, but I want to fo-cus only on the notion of a declaration of independ-ence, since surely we are presently mindful of the Dec-laration of Independence. How about this? I declare myself independent of the actions that violate the con-victions of my faith. Furthermore, I pledge to remain free of the anxiety that gives power to any secular au-thority that would attempt to restrict my freedom to “rejoice in the Lord always.”
The source of our independence and freedom is Di-vine, so let us celebrate both the gift and the Giver. “If the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.” John 8:36
“I feel relieved to know that I am not the only soul suffer-ing in such deep sorrow after my abortion. Rachel’s Vineyard is a life-changing event! I am so happy I came!” ~Testimony after a Rachel’s Vineyard Retreat
