You may be familiar with the adage, “My work does not define me.” I appreciate the sentiments of

this statement. After all, why would we want to be defined by our work? It seems so…ugh, and yet,

the work we do is quite often an accurate expression of that which defines our core identity – our

values, ethics, priorities, natural tendencies, character, leadership traits, aspirations, inspirations, and

so forth. If this is correct, maybe a more appropriate phrase we can consider is, “My work reveals

what defines me.”

Although I like the revised phrase better, talking about work, let alone writing about it, isn’t what

comes to mind for Pulitzer prize-type content. I’d much rather talk about fly fishing, fishing with flies,

probably not flies themselves, Minecraft (did you know you can catch fish in Minecraft?)…

backpacking. Still, doing so gives background about the scope and scale of prior challenges that

prepared me to step into this role.

Much of my professional background is in strategy consulting, IT operations, enterprise architecture, systems engineering, and project

management. Over the years I personally administered hundreds of server systems, as many databases, and thousands of desktop systems.

I also managed millions of dollars in enterprise-wide transformational programs, developed award-winning digital capabilities, and led

large engineering and architecture teams to solve highly complex business problems. I specialize in connecting people through digital

encounters that foster deep-meaning interactions and highly relational experiences. For instance, I helped develop a distance learning

program enabling quarantined terminal patients to attend their classes at school virtually using 360-degree HD web cameras. I spent two

years developing a conceptual gamified health engagement program with sensor tracking devices for children battling chronic disease. I

also developed and managed a community youth innovation pilot program emphasizing skills in immersive storytelling using quest-based

learning behaviors and techniques with game development, toy design, and 3-D modeling for Minecraft and LEGOs.

I’m grateful for the opportunities I have had to be successful and for the many lessons learned from messing up and failing miserably. I

could list more projects describing my success, but at the end of the day, technology is about people – it’s invented by people, it’s made

for people, and it’s consumed by people. It may sound a bit corny, but I believe that the primary role of CSI’s IT Department is to help

Page 2: NEW FACES ON CAMPUS SEE WHO S NEW AND WHERE THEY …pace.csi.edu/newsletters/2015/PACENewsletter4Q2015.pdf · Every professional and classified employee, both full-and part-time,

I love my job, I work at the CSI Refugee Center. I have worked at the College of Southern Idaho for four years. CSI has provided me with an opportunity to work and grow with our diverse population. Here at the Refugee Center we work as a great team to accomplish our goal which is to really help the refugees. Every day I work with refugees from different parts of the world many who have suffered so much in their life and they come looking for a change. My job duties include: airport pick up, housing, housing orientations, community orientations, home visits, and so much more. I enjoy working with people from different parts of the world. It is very interesting to learn about

their culture and values. Not surprisingly, we have many things in common. CSI has made important changes in the lives of so many people and I hope we will continue to do so. Since I am not on campus, I do not interact with a lot of employees but on some occasions I get to meet other employees at the business office when I take the refugees. But you would more likely meet me at the airport at night around 11pm. My desire to make change in the lives of people

days and nights to make sure that our families are safe and their basic needs are met. In the future, I look forward to more work with CSI Refugee

Programs. I think acceptance of others and appreciation of what we have will make our world a better place to live. If I have extra time, I would like to volunteer for the community. This country has provided me with a lot of opportunities and possibilities. I feel like I have to give back to this country.

Help Chart the Future of CSI The CSI Strategic Planning Survey is Open! Open until October 9th

3

Are you interested in helping chart the future of the College of Southern Idaho? Do you want

to make sure your voice is heard during the planning process? Then make sure you take time to

participate in the CSI Strategic Planning Survey that is currently open! The college’s new strategic

plan will serve as a roadmap as CSI moves into the next five years and be-

yond. It will set our priorities as an institution, will help form strategies to

meet those priorities, and will be used to measure our progress toward ful-

filling our mission as a community college.

The survey has nine questions, most of which are open ended. You can

spend as much time as you like filling it out but, in most cases, you should

be able to complete it in less than 15 minutes. Please set aside some time

between now and the time the survey closes on October 9, 2015, to make

sure that your voice is heard. You can access the survey at this link:

http://survey.csi.edu/TakeSurvey.aspx?SurveyID=98KH8ll5

Once the survey wraps up, the Office of Institutional Effectiveness will compile the results and

post them on the CSI website. The results will then be analyzed by the CSI Strategic Planning

Steering Committee. This group is charged with using the results, along with other institutional

and external data, to craft the strategic plan. The committee is made up of a wide range of em-

ployees from across campus. PACE is well represented by Shonna Parsons (Professional Staff

Representative) and Ansina Durham (Classified Staff Representative). You can see a full list of the

committee here:

http://planning.csi.edu/planning/committee.asp

As the college strives to meet demands to be more accountable and transparent, the strategic plan-

ning process is more important than ever. Our strategic plan aids us in defining our mission as a

college and also serves as a tool for measuring fulfillment of that mission. Defining our mission

and measuring fulfillment are critical components of our regional accreditation process. Most im-

portantly, a good strategic plan will help us be more accountable to ourselves. A well-crafted plan

will allow us to clearly define what we want to accomplish, how we

plan to accomplish that, and how we will measure our own success.

The first step to all of this is gathering the right input from the right

people at the start, which is why your participation is so vital! Let

me thank you in advance for taking the time to participate in this im-

portant process. Feel free to contact me in the Office of Institutional

Effectiveness at [email protected] or 208-732-6775 with any ques-

tions or comments that you have!

CSI Introduces Canvas – Our New Online Classroom System Have you heard the news? There’s a big change coming

to the online experience for CSI’s faculty and students,

and its name is Canvas.

Canvas is a Learning Management System (LMS) – essentially an online class-room system – that is set to replace Blackboard Learn. Blackboard has been CSI’s official LMS for the last 15 years and it has served us well during that time. However, it has experienced some difficult challenges and stability issues over the last few years so that faculty, students, and IT decided it was time to evaluate other options.

The decision was not made lightly. When Blackboard was launched at CSI in 2000, it started out as a small pilot with just a handful of courses. By Fall 2014, we had over 640 courses using Blackboard each semester. CSI has made significant investments in Blackboard, but after a decade and a half, we thought it might be time for something new.

The evaluation of alternative solutions was performed by a committee of faculty and staff from two dif-ferent technology committees, along with representatives from IT and the student body. A Request for Proposal (RFP) was published, and once the candidate vendors were evaluated, both the Faculty Sen-ate and the Student Senate voted to support the committee’s recommendation before it was presented to the Board of Trustees for approval in May 2015.

Over the summer, IT worked with Canvas to get up and running, and approximately 40 faculty began building their courses to pilot the system during the Fall semester. We’re in the middle of that pilot now, learning the software, discovering the unexpected gems and hidden ‘gotchas’, and defining best prac-tices.

For Spring 2016, all faculty will be encouraged to opt-in to Canvas, though they will still be able to use Blackboard if desired. By Summer 2016, Canvas will become the default solution and only those facul-ty who have a specific reason to opt-out will be able to use Blackboard. Our Blackboard license expires in September 2016, so by the start of Fall 2016, all courses MUST be on Canvas and Blackboard will be completely turned off.

The response to Canvas so far has been overwhelmingly positive, though that does not mean it’s a perfect system. We recognize that Canvas does not have quite the same robustness in its features as Blackboard, but the instructors and students who are piloting it this semester have returned glowing feedback. Many students have said they can’t wait until all their courses are in Canvas.

Through the rest of fall, we will offer training seminars and hands-on sessions for faculty to learn how to build their courses in Canvas in time for spring. The instructors in our pilot group will act as mentors and guides to their coworkers, and IT is looking into additional ways to provide training. Similarly, stu-dent clubs and organizations that currently use Blackboard will also begin to move to Canvas this spring. Overall, we have been very pleased with Canvas and are optimistic about the experience it will provide our faculty and students. If you have any questions about how you might use Canvas in your depart-ment or how it might affect your operations, please don’t hesitate to contact IT.

A Thousand Acres DVD This is a powerful story of love, dark secrets and betrayals. At the center are three daughters (Michelle Pfeiffer, Jessica Lange, Jennifer Jason Leigh) and one aging father (Jason Robards) with 1,000 acres to bequeath to them, but only on his terms. This movie was made in 1997 and three years later the acting world lost the famous Jason Robards. One reviewer

movie, but actually quite realistic with the family dynamics. It is one to watch with your eyes open. Ann Keane, ADC Office Spec.

Greenwich Village: Music that Defined a Generation DVD Talk about a walk down memory lane. This is a great documentary with rare, archival foot-

evolved from there not only defined a generation, it changed the world. It was a time that songs were written about civil liberties, protesting the Vietnam War and letting the government know it needed to be accountable for their actions. One of the greatest of the era was Pete Seeger. There are some wonderful in-terviews with him and the importance of music and how it can bring peace. Watch it, watch it and then watch it again. In fact, it ought to be a part of your home collection. Ann Keane, ADC Office Spec.

Dracula Untold DVD This is certainly not a movie for the young ones. There is quite a bit of violence. I will say it is a nice weaving together of fact and fantasy. This story weaves the truth of Vlad the Impaler, who helped con-quer the Ottoman Empire with the fantasy of the beginnings of Dracula. The year is 1492 and naturally it takes place in the country of Transylvania. Ann Keane, ADC Office Spec. Captain America, The First Avenger, DVD Every country needs a hero, most

the very same that brought you Iron Man, comes a story of courage and honor. The story of a young man who wants to help his country and is turned down by every enlistment office he goes to. He is too small of stature and his stamina

love for his country and wanting to do what is right with honor. His heart is what helps him on the journey to become Captain America. Great family film.
