tractive to consumers,On the positive side, CTA is univer-

sally known and used throughout its serv-ice area. In Chicago, 70% of all house-holds have used CTA during a typicalweek (27%in the suburbs), and 53%of ourriders use CTA at least five days per week,with another 22% riding at least threedays per week. Our consumers rated usonly slightly lower than the auto in termsof timeliness and knowing how to use theservice, and CTA has a significantly bettercost rating in areas where commuters mustpay for parking.

Our most unfavorable comparisonswere in the areas of security from crime,comfort and cleanliness, and ease of set-ting one's own schedule. Suprisingly,consumers think CTA is slightly more ex-pensive overall than driving a car, a grossmisconception that we have begun to ad-dress though marketing,

Service planning has become moremarket-driven, We are adjusting servicelevels or establishing new routes in areaswhere new travel patterns provide sig-nificant opportunities for increased rider-ship. The 33 Magnificent Mile and 127routes are recent examples that connectmajor sources of increased ridership.

Our Marketing department is alsoworking directly with major business andrecreational locations, providing custominformation for potential riders.

Our new fares are give consumersmore choices for spending and savingtransportation dollars. The new Week-day Monthly Pass, priced significantlylower than the Everyday Monthly Pass,will increase pass sales, and discountedtokens will lead many 3-day riders into 5-day weekly ridership. Discounted off-peak fares will ease rush hour crowdingand save money for riders with flexibleschedules. Tokens and passes involveprepayment of fares, which is more con-venient for riders, because it speeds upfare paying and boarding, and is finan-cially beneficial to CTA.

Future marketing initiatives might in-clude custom express services with pre-mium fares and guaranteed seating.

Success in the transit marketplace canonly be achieved by identifying consumerneeds through market research and tai-loring our service to meet those needs,

During the post-waraffluence, the newly-afford-able automobile became themore popular choice. Com-placent transit companies cutcosts through consolidationand were often viewed asmonopolies with no realcompetition.

In recent years, our in-dustry has begun to realize that transitand all other modes are indeed competingto serve the transportation needs of theconsumer. To achieve success in the trans-portation marketplace, we must identifythe changing needs of transportationconsumers, modify our services and poli-cies to meet those needs, and agressivelymarket our improved services to makeconsumers aware that transit is an in-creasingly preferable means of fulfillingtransportation needs.

During 1988 and 1989, CTA began toidentify consumer needs through exten-sive market research. We rediscoveredsome good things about CTA, and, moreimportantly, we learned of several waysthat our service could be made more at-

M.I.S.ReorganizationNews

In an effort to meet expanded In-formation Technology utilization,CTA Managementrecently approveda reorganization of the M.I.S. Depart-ment. A new responsibility area hasbeen established to provide resourcesfor ongoing Information TechnologyPlanning and Support. Leo White,who has been Director of M.I.S. Com-puter Operations, has been assignedas Director of this new area. Com-puter Operations will be under newsupervision and will continue its pro-duction responsibility.

The Office Systems area will nowassume an increased role for technol-ogy deployment to end-users as wellas continuing with Office AutomationDeployment. Paul Olenski continuesto serve as Director of this activity.

Systems Development, which JeffShelley serves as Director, will assumeresponsibility for all M.I.S. SystemsDevelopment activities, includingmainframe, LAN/Server Systems, andPC's.

M.I.S. Manager, Bernie Connolly,has stated that these changes willbetter serve the Authority's evolvinguse of Information Technology.

In-house training

As of December 31,1989, morethan 1100 users have availed them-selves of the M.I.S./Office Systems in-house training programs since theirinception 19 months ago. The in-house training programs are pre-sented by Ms. Colleen Cannon, OfficeSystems Instructor. The programsequence offered by Office Systems in-cludes:

TSIS SystemThe M.I.S. Department has com-

pleted Phase 3 and 4 of the Track andStructure Inspection System (TSIS).This accomplishment allows the Engi-neering and Maintenance Departmentto accurately capture and report trackand structure defect informationfound during the inspection process.M.I.S. is continuing to refine thissystem.

Imagine the effect on your productivityif you could discover a system that wouldenable you to complete at least half of yourwork in one-quarter of the time that is nor-mally required, quickly explore alternativesolutions to complex problems, combineseveral time-consuming chores into simpleoperations, and make changes (Doesn't theboss always ask for changes?) quickly andpainlessly.

A system that does all of these things,Desktop Publishing, is beginning to change theway that graphics are prepared at CTA.

In the Publications and Graphics sectionof the Marketing department, we took deliv-ery of our first IBMPersonal Sys~m 2,Model70 personal computer in September, 1988.The PC came equipped with Pagemaker pagedesign software; word processing software,and an IBM scanner with Imagedit software.These software applications, and many oth-ers, operate under Microsoft Windows soft-ware. In the Windows environment, numer-ous complex functions can be directly con-trolled by moving a mouse (pointing device)across the desktop, while pushing or holdingthe mouse button, and making selections frompull-down menus. The artist does very littletyping, and an extensive knowledge of com-puter commands or file management proce-dures is not required.

PagemakerThe focal point of the system is the Page-

maker software. Pagemaker acts as an elec-

tronic drawing board and more, combiningseveral functions including type setting, typesizing, precise keyline and rule line drawing,tinting, graphic scaling and sizing of images,and pasteup. Body text and headlines can betyped and arranged in columns by the artist,or the artist can import word processing filesinto Pagemaker that have been prepared by askilled typist.

Various types of graphic files can beimported to the Pagemaker drawing board,where the images can be scaled to fit thelayout. These may include graphs and chartsfrom Lotus 1-2-3software, line drawings, il-lustrations and photographs that have beendigitized by the IBMScanner and edited withImagedit software, or complex graphics andillustrations that have been drawn on thecomputer with high resolution drawing soft-ware.

The Publications and Graphics sectionprepares most illustra tions with Arts &Letterssoftware. Illustrations are drawn with themouse, and illustration files can be saved foruse over and over again in Pagemaker publi-cations. Arts & Letters also provides a libraryof tens of thousands of pre-drawn clip art il-lustrations which can be altered or combinedto produce complex illustrations. Photo-graphs prepared by the IBMScanner can alsobe imported into Arts & Letters, where theartist can create a detailed illustration by trac-ing the photo with the mouse. This is verysimilar to the traditional procedure of draw-ing an illustration on a sheet of tracing paper

on the PCplaced over a photo. Typography can also berotated in Arts & Letters, and manipulated inmany other ways.

Learning the systemPagemaker and Arts & Letters were cre-

ated for artists, by artists with computer back-grounds. All of the terminology and tech-niques reflect traditional graphic art prac-tices. Through either classroom instructionor self-teaching with the tutorials suppliedwith the software, an artist can gain a work-ing knowledge of the software in three daysor less. From that point on, experience is thebest teacher, as the artist advances from simplepage layouts to complicated graphics.

The level of artistic creativity expressedthrough the software is also a direct result ofthe artist's effort and creativity. Computersoftware is a very powerful tool, but it cannotinvent original ideas or make aesthetic deci-sions.

Working with the systemThe artist views work in progress on a

high resolution WYSIWYG(what you see iswhat you get) computer monitor. At any timeduring the creative process, the artist canprint a sample of the work on an IBMPersonalPageprinter or any other printer that uses thePostscript page description language.

In the Publications and Graphics section,applications of computer graphics increasedin direct proportion to the artists' experiencelevel. It began with simple publications likepublic notices that require some typographyand minimal artwork, and expanded to com-plex publications including print ads, annualreports, brochures, small maps and TransitNews. In all of our recent computer-gener-ated items, all typography, line work, and il-lustrations are prepared on the computer.While the technology to digitize black andwhite or full color photos and place them intothe computer layout is available, we find itmore economical and efficient, at this time, toadd photos in the traditional manner. We do,however, insert digitized photos for conceptapproval when needed.

How does it look?Early applications of computer graphics

were severely criticized because they lookedlike they came from a computer, but modernoutput (printing) techniques have eliminatedthe jagged lines and wiggly curves. Simple,short duration publications likewindow cardsand public notices are reproduced directlyfrom our IBMPageprinter, with 300dots persquare inch (DPI) resolution. We also have

the option of sending our computer files tohigh resolution imagesetters that J!'Tintat 2540DP!, a technique that is used for Transit News,annual reports, brochures, car card advertis-ing, posters, print ads and other high-profileassignments. The two pages that you areviewing now were produced from a singlenegative generated by an imagesetter at 2540DP!. We have one firm rule when producinga quality publication for the public. If it lookslike it came from a computer, it isn't good enough.

Systems approachSince extensive application of computer

graphics began in the Publications section inOctober of 1988,many other sections, includ-ing Schedules, Transportation Training andOperations Planning, have begun to use com-puter graphic systems, and have benefitedfrom the systems' speed and creative flexibil-ity. Since all of these sections are using Page-maker on IBMpersonal computers suppliedby Management Information Systems, wehave been able to share word processing,page layout, and illustration files.

While the computerized, high resolutiontypesetting and layout system in the FormsDesign section ofManagement Services is notnow IBM compatible, we expect that it willsoon be adapted to receive graphic files fromIBMPCs. Then all CTAdepartments produc-ing graphics on the PC will benefit from ac-cess to a high resolution, 2400 DP!, image-setter.

Looking aheadFive years ago, economical Desktop Pub-

lishing did not exist. Now it is a highlycompetitive field, and hardware and soft-ware manufacturers are competing to intro-duce more economical products with ex-panded capabilities. The future of computergenerated graphic production will be fast-paced and exciting.

The Transit Idea Program (TIP) isan updated employee suggestion pro-gram which provides opportunitiesfor employees to be creative and toimplement improvements which maybe beneficial to the riding public.

Individuals must be employees inorder to be TIP participants. Part-timeemployees are also eligible. '"

All ideas submitted to TIP becomethe property of CTA. Awards will bemade only if an idea is accepted andimplemented.

Commendations

Brenda Curtindolph(O'Hare terminal) was praisedby Donald Jennings, whoworks at city hall. "Riding lateone night on the O'Hare line, Iobserved a rough-looking manget on and sit next to an oldlady, even though there wereplenty of empty seats. Theconductor walked over to thelady and took her by the handto a seat next to her. Then shemade a general announcementadvising passengers to becareful of their belongings."

Sergio Villanueva(No. 151Sheridan, North Parkgarage) was appreciated byJack McCarey, of LaGrange,for his courtesy as operator ofa bus leaving Union station."A number of elderly ladiesboarded. They fumbledthrough their purses, lookingfor the exact fare, while askingquestions. He was courteous,polite, understanding andhelpful. When I commentedabout him to a woman whoappeared to be a regular rider,she said, 'He's always likethis.'"

Darnell Williams(No. 28 Stony Island, 103rdStreet garage) won theapproval of Victoria Ryan, apublic relations person whoregularly rides his bus to herjob at Chicago State Univer-sity. "I can depend on himwhen I travel to and fromwork. He never neglects to callout the stops, and alwaysgreets the passengers whenthey board the bus. Further-more, he is patient andpleasant to ride with. He givesus all a reason to go throughthe day happy and in a gooddisposition."

Tonja Collins(No. 53 Pulaski, Lawndalegarage) was complimented byMrs. D. Alexander, who wasvisiting from Glen Burnie,Maryland, for "a mostwonderful and enjoyable busride. She answered all of ourquestions about the city, andgave us a guided tour as werode down Pulaski. She wasvery well groomed, polite, andknowledgeable. I have neverbeen on any type of publictransportation where theoperator was as friendly andinformative as she was."

RandellJ.Hawthorne, 34, aCTA rapid transitmotorman since1986, died January30 at St. Francis hospital in Blue Islandfollowing a sudden illness.

Mr. Hawthorne, of Ashland terminal,was a precinct captain in the seventhward, and was one of several Democraticcandidates to run for the First District U.S.House in a special primary in July 1983,after Congressman Harold Washingtonwas elected mayor of the City of Chicago.

Mr. Hawthorne was also a member ofthe ETAAuxiliary, producers of amateurplays and musicals. Funds from ETA pro-ductions were used to benefit underprivi-leged neighborhood youth.

He belonged to the New HopeMiracle.Revival Tabernacle, formerlypastored by his stepfather, Willie McCoy.Survivors include a son, Derrick, a daugh-ter, Chenise, his parents, Rose and WillieMcCoy, and a brother, Christopher.

After more than 43years with CTA,Robert McCarthyof the Purchasingdepartment retiredFebruary 1. Mc-Carthy had served inthe Purchasing de-partment for 22years. He startedwith the departmentas a buyer and pro-gressed to varioussupervisory posi-tions. His most re-cent position wassupervisor, VendorPerformance. Priorto his dedication tothe Purchasing de-partment, he worked in Accounting, Charter Sales, theElectrical department, and the storerooms. Friendsand co-workers say he plans to embark on a new careeras "Mr. Mom."

JoanNathanieldies suddenly

Joan JacksonNathaniel, a ware-house worker atCTA's 77th street andVincennes facility,died Friday, January26, of injuries sustained in a tragic autoaccident on the southbound Dan Ryan ex-pressway.

Mrs. Nathaniel, of Mobile, Ala., wasemployed by CTA on June 4,1976, as aticket agent, and had also worked in theTreasury department.

She was an active member of the Pull-man Presbyterian church where sheserved in the youth department.

She is survived by a daughter, twosons, a step-daughter, four granddaugh-ters; her mother, Mrs. O.c. Jackson; onebrother and one sister; and an aunt, Mrs.Rose Mary Jackson.
