MAY 3, 2020 TOPIC: PROPHESYING RESTORATION LESSON TEXT: Zephaniah 3:14-20 DEVOTIONAL READING: Psalm 47 MEMORY VERSE: At that time, I will deal with all those who oppressed you. I will rescue the lame I will gather the exiles. I will give them praise and honour in every land where they have suffered shame. Zephaniah 3:19 LESSON AIMS: At the end of the lesson each participant will be able to:

1. Identify the themes of Restoration 2. Explain the significance of the themes of restoration 3. Use a favourite hymn or song daily for week to praise God for promised

Restoration. INTRODUCTION: Living in a frail and failing world where everything of value seems to be at the risk of being lost, possess a challenge of how best to retain and preserve these invaluable. When a priceless work of art needs restoration, it would be foolish to trust that job to anyone, the best, or else the outcome would not be as desired. Israel needed true restoration. A return to the true justice and righteousness, a fruitful and delightful land. The people of Judah had forsaken God and gone into idolatry. Zephaniah‟s prophecy of God‟s judgement came true in 586BC when Judah went into Babylonian exile (2 kings25 1-21). Yet amid this, God‟s promised restoration would come, but who would take on the job of restoring her from rebellion to true worship? The prophesied restoration began in 538BC when the captive returned to Judah (Ezra 1;1-4). First, the purification which would restore the rebellious to ensure only the survival of faithful remnant had to be carried out (Zeph 3:12). Section 1:Celebration: Zeph. 3:14,15 1.1. With the promised restoration comes a new identity and testimony, the people

were asked to praise God by singing. Why was this important? 1 Chronicles 16:23, Ps 89:1

1.2 What other approach can we use to express proper gratitude for God‟s promised care Ps 33:2-3, 47:1

1.3 Our praise must be focused on God and should tell what he has done. Why? 1.4 One of the reasons for this praise in (3vs15) is that the Lord promises to forgive,

save and redeem his people. What other themes should our praise proclaim? Section 2 Promise: Zeph. 3:16-20 1.2 To further reaffirm the certainty of God‟s visitation even though the exact date

wasn‟t known, the prophet said „„on that day‟‟ and it did come to pass. How should this help us while we wait for realisation of God‟s promise today? Heb 11:1

1.3 Overcoming fear is one of the things we must do while we wait. Zeph. 3 vs 16b-17, Isaiah 35:3-4. How do we encourage ourselves to achieve this?

Page 3: NEW ESTATE BAPTIST CHURCH ABUJA SUNDAY SCHOOL … · 5.05.2020  · MAY 3, 2020 TOPIC: PROPHESYING RESTORATION LESSON TEXT: Zephaniah 3:14-20 DEVOTIONAL READING: Psalm 47 MEMORY VERSE:

1.4 Mention some pointers to God‟s restoration. (Isaiah 65:8-9, Jer. 33:11, Joel 2:23,26-27, Philippians 4:7)

1.5 In what ways do you sense that God wants you to be His instrument of restoration in bringing back someone who is lost to Him?

CONCLUSION: Remember the SU saying back in those days „‟Only Jesus Can Save‟‟ it is still very true today. He is the chief restorer of all things broken or spoilt, he is the potter who mends, and fixes broken hearts, homes, relationships, dreams, Nations. He alone is the one who has the power which is why the promise of restoration is more relevant to us today. While we still sojourn in this world and await our full restoration to heaven, let us daily trust Him to keep us from the captivity of sin which is in this world. PRAYER Dear Lord, open our eyes to ways in which you are present and restoring your kingdom in and around us Amen. THOUGHT TO REMEMBER Celebrate the present and future reality of our restored relationship to God.

MAY 10, 2020 TOPIC: PROMISING PEACE LESSON TEXT: ZECHARIAH 8 DEVOTIONAL READING: Zechariah 8:18-23 MEMORY VERSE: “I have determined to do good to Jerusalem and Judah, Do not be afraid.” Zechariah 8:15 LESSON AIMS: At the end of the lesson each participant will be able to:

1) Describe the expression of Peace that God promises 2) Explain why jealousy is not a sin or character defect when applied to God 3) Write a song to dedicate your life to God‟s new normal.

INTRODUCTION The book of Zechariah, the prophet looks at Israel after exile, a time around 520-518 BC. It paints the picture of Israel living in peace and safety with reassurance from God, that they will no longer be afflicted nor overrun. Sometimes when the word of God comes pertaining a thing, its fulfilment may seem impossible in the light of recent events. But God (Almighty) had spoken and it will come to pass. Zechariah wanted to stir up the faith of the people by assuring them that it was time for God to turn around their captivity; and it would be complete. Once again old men/women would sit in the streets with staff in their hands while the boys and girls played around. What word of promise have you held unto recently concerning your life‟s situation? Remind God about His word and wait for the manifestation of God‟s word and you will have peace round about. Section 1. Stability (Zechariah: 8:1-8) 1.1 “The word of the Lord Almighty came to me” Zechariah 8:18. Why did Prophet

Zechariah begin his statement this way? In what way would this help the recipients of this promise?

1.2 God says “I am very jealous for Zion” (Jeremiah 8:2, Isaiah 9:7, 37:32). How does this statement affect your relationship with God?

1.3 Our text in verses 7,8 says „I will save them from all their enemies and bring them back to live in Jerusalem.” (Jeremiah 8:7-8). How can you relate this restorative promise to our present time?

1.4 What can our church do today to accommodate people of all ages and class? Discuss!

Section 2. Prosperity (Zechariah 8:11-15) 2.1 God promised a reversal of Israel‟s misfortunes by promising not to deal with the

remnant as before. He fulfilled His promise by announcing a new norm; He will begin to do new things for them. What are some of the signs of newness? Vs. 12-13

2.2 What has God determined to do for His people in vs 15. Again God asks His people not to be afraid. Why is this necessary?

2.3 As part of the newness (new normal way of life), God expects His people to assume new responsibilities. Name them. Vs 16-17.

2.4 As part of working in the newness, what actions will you decide to improve on this week?

Page 5: NEW ESTATE BAPTIST CHURCH ABUJA SUNDAY SCHOOL … · 5.05.2020  · MAY 3, 2020 TOPIC: PROPHESYING RESTORATION LESSON TEXT: Zephaniah 3:14-20 DEVOTIONAL READING: Psalm 47 MEMORY VERSE:

CONCLUSION: God promised to dwell with His people, a promise fulfilled in the Church Zech. 8:8. Ezekiel 37:27. No matter how far we go in disobedience He is always eager to have us back like the father in the scriptures Luke 15:20-23. But like the prodigal son we must take the first step on the way back to an ever-loving father whose arms are always open to give us peace beyond the troubles the world confronts us with everyday Matt.6:34. He is determined to redeem all who are willing to acknowledge Him as sovereign Lord. PRAYER Father may our allegiance be to you alone! Strengthen us to reflect Your values and character daily in Jesus name. Amen THOUGHT TO REMEMBER Only God offers true restoration and peace

MAY 17, 2020 TOPIC: PRACTICE JUSTICE LESSON TEXT: JEREMIAH 21 DEVOTIONAL READING PSALM 86:1-13 MEMORY VERSE: “This is what the Lord says to the house of David „‟ administer Justice every morning rescue from the hand of the oppressor the one who has been robbed.” Jeremiah 21:12a. LESSON AIMS: At the end of the lesson each participant will be able to:

1. Summarize Jeremiah‟s message to the people and the royal court 2. Explain why God‟s covenant people sometimes suffered more

severely under his judgemental wrath than did their pagan neighbours

3. Write a testimony of a time when negative consequences resulted in repentance and a long-term benefit.

INTRODUCTION: Some of the most disheartening or frightening experiences in life occur when we come face to face with the negative consequences of our poor decisions. Often when confronted with these consequences, we become baffled at the magnitude of consequence that resulted from our decisions. Sometimes, we try to deny the far-reaching impact of our part in it or accuse God of being unfair. Jeremiah ministered from 625 to 575 BC that ministry was to the Judean people who had disobeyed the Lord on a grand scale. God had sent several prophets to warn the people, but they refused to change. If the pagan nations deserve God‟s judgement for disobedience how much more should his own people remain in disobedience?

Section 1. To the people: Jeremiah 21:8-10 1.1 Why would God ask the people of Judah to make a choice? And what did God

put in place to help that choice Deuteronomy 30:15 1.2 The choice presented to God‟s people by Jeremiah is also presented to us as

individuals and as a people. Discuss Matt.7:13-14, Josh 14:15. 1.3 How should we respond to those whose prayers reflect their own desires more

than openness to God‟s will as demonstrated in Jer. 21:2, relate this to James 4:3 and Ps 37:4.

1.4 God set before them options with consequences vs 9,10 but stated that those who escape would do so by surrendering to the enemy (Jer.38:17-18).

1.5 What filters can we use to evaluate claims that a recent disaster today is from God? (Jer.20:4; Jer. 32:28 ; Duet.4:25-28,Duet.4:29-31)

Section 2.To the King’s House: Jer 21:11-14, Jer. 5:1 2.1 The first requirement the lord makes of the leading elite was to administer

justice, Prov. 21:3 how can we relate this to our present day? Refer to Lev. 19:15, Luke 11:42.

2.2 As a people how do we ensure that the privileged few do not abuse their position to deny the indigent what is theirs? Deut. 27:19, Matt 23:23.

Page 7: NEW ESTATE BAPTIST CHURCH ABUJA SUNDAY SCHOOL … · 5.05.2020  · MAY 3, 2020 TOPIC: PROPHESYING RESTORATION LESSON TEXT: Zephaniah 3:14-20 DEVOTIONAL READING: Psalm 47 MEMORY VERSE:

2.3 Jeremiah spoke truth to power and proclaimed God‟s punishment for their stubbornness and pride. Is this possible today? Discuss in the light of Rom 13:1-4

2.4 How would you respond to someone who says God‟s promise to punish His people contradicts the known fact that God is Love? 1 John 4:8. and Heb. 12:25,29

CONCLUSION: Today‟s lesson clearly tells us that there are consequences for our choices and we must be careful when making choices ranging from the mundane to those with eternal consequences. One thing is sure, God will punish all disobedience. But whether we will escape its far-reaching effect depends on our decision to walk in obedience. Now therefore consider the kindness and sternness of God Romans 11:22. The grace of God has appeared to all men Titus 2:11, may we choose right while it is still time today. PRAYER Father remind us that daily we must make choices to either follow the broad way to destruction or walk as Jesus walked. I John 2:6 THOUGHT TO REMEMBER Choose the way of life

MAY 24, 2020 TOPIC: REPENT OF INJUSTICE LESSON TEXT: JEREMIAH 22:1-10 DEVOTIONAL READING: PSALM 72:1-17 MEMORY VERSE: “This is what the Lord says: Do what is just and right” Jeremiah 22:3a LESSON AIMS: At the end of the lesson each participant will be able to:

1. State promised results of obedience to God and the promised consequence of disobedience

2. Compare and contrast God‟s statements regarding social justice and injustice with those in other lesson texts of this unit

3. Evaluate his or her church‟s ministries to the most vulnerable and participate in a plan for improving those.

INTRODUCTION: The rule of law stipulates that everyone in a country is equal before the law. The rich, the poor, government officials no matter their position as well as private entities are accountable under the law. Unfortunately, this is not the case in Nigeria as the opinion of many is that the judiciary is no longer the last hope of the common man. Crime and punishment must exist to form a society‟s coherent order in every society. The “get rich quick syndrome” has plagued and destroyed the fabric of our society and the judiciary is not an exception. In our country, some persons use their offices to oppress the poor and enrich their private pockets. Like in the days of prophet Jeremiah, God is yet angry with any nation which abhors justice at the detriment of society. Today‟s lesson focuses particularly on the consequence of injustice and disobedience. QUESTIONS SECTION 1: A Call To Do justice and Reward of Obedience (Jeremiah 22:1-4) 1.1 What was Israel recommended to do? How do these apply to us today?

Jeremiah 22:1-4; 8-10 1.2 Reflecting on Jeremiah 22:1-4, what is your opinion about the justice system in

Nigeria? Is God happy about these? 1.3 Are there issues of injustice in our societies? If yes, how can they be addressed?

Discuss 1.4 How will our nation be transformed if issues of injustice are properly addressed?

Jeremiah 22:4-5 SECTION 2: Consequence of Disobedience (Jeremiah 22:5-7) 2.1 What are the consequences of injustice? Are these consequences evidenced in

our nation today? Discuss(Jeremiah 5:5-7, 2.2 Discuss how the disobedience of a few affect even the believers? 2.3 How can believers know that the nation is suffering as a result of disobedience? 2.4 What should believers do on realizing that the people are being afflicted as a

result of disobedience to God‟s commands?

Page 9: NEW ESTATE BAPTIST CHURCH ABUJA SUNDAY SCHOOL … · 5.05.2020  · MAY 3, 2020 TOPIC: PROPHESYING RESTORATION LESSON TEXT: Zephaniah 3:14-20 DEVOTIONAL READING: Psalm 47 MEMORY VERSE:

SECTION 3: Warning to Believers (Jeremiah 22:10 3.1 Make reference to King Shallum in Jeremiah 22:11-12, 2 Kings 23:29-32; what

are the lessons for leaders today? 3.2 Are there issues of injustices in our churches today? How can our leaders

address and / or avoid these? CONCLUSION From the lesson today, it is clear that God detests every form of injustice. Unfortunately, when God decides to punish injustice in any society, even believers are affected. Therefore, we cannot afford to be silent. We must take proactive steps to draw the attention of our leaders to the issues of injustice like Jeremiah. Believers must treat issues of injustice with the same gravity as God would. Most importantly, we must like Jeremiah continue sound the alarm concerning every evil in our society and keep asking the Lord for mercy concerning our nation, Nigeria and other nations of the world. PRAYER Heavenly Father, help us see ways in which we have been unjust so that we may repent and model you as you would have us do in Jesus name, Amen. THOUGHT TO REMEMBER Does your example invite God‟s justice?

MAY 31, 2020 TOPIC: PURSUE LOVE AND JUSTICE LESSON TEXT: HOSEA 11:1-2,7-10, 12:1-2,6-14 DEVOTIONAL READING: Deuteronomy 8:11-20 MEMORY VERSE: “You must return to your God, maintain love and justice and wait for your God always” Hosea 12:6 LESSON AIMS: At the end of this lesson, each leaner will be able to: 1) Identify Israel‟s problems 2) Explain whether the predicted consequence of the problem better fit the concept of restorative justice or retributive justice 3) Identify one or more parallels to elements of the text and develop responses. INTRODUCTION: The Northern kingdom of Israel of the mid eight century BC though beautiful on the outside was completely rotten to the core. The kingdom during the reign of Jeroboam II (793-753 BC) grew and became successful. Israel was a leading nation among her neighbours (2 Kings14:23-29) but became wealthy and proud of her success; turning their backs on God by shifting into Baal worship (Hosea 2:8,13) which went hand in hand with Injustice. This became a common theme throughout history, that people at the peak of success very easily forget God as their source. A situation foreseen in Deut 8:17-18. In confronting this Idolatry, God called Hosea to take a different approach. Let us study and find out. Section 1. Father’s Faithfulness (Hosea 11:1,2,7-10)

1.1 The scriptures open with a revelation of God‟s fatherly love for Israel, compare this to Matt 2:15. Is God still calling us out today?

1.2 The more God called out to them, the more the people continued in their idolatry and mixed worship, their heart untrue to God vs 2,7. Is this happening today? Isaiah 29:13,2Tim.3:5, if so, What can we do to change this?

1.3 God is heartbroken with the thought of punishing Israel as they deserve (vs 8,9) but his compassion tempers his judgement. Ezekiel 33:11, Isaiah 1:19 How can knowing this help us obtain forgiveness?

1.4 God foretell a future where His people will follow him (11vs 10) his call will go out like the roar of a lion and his children will flock towards him. What are some of the hindrances to people responding to this call today?

Section 2. The Lord’s Resolution (Hosea 12:1-2,6-14)

2.1 God brings a charge of sin against his people, what were the charges (Hosea 12:1,2),

2.2 What warning signs can tell if we are heading the same way, and how can we guard against committing same today? 2 Cor.13:5.

2.3 God instructs his people to return and tells them to do 3 things in vs 6, list them. b) What does it mean to wait on/for God?

Page 11: NEW ESTATE BAPTIST CHURCH ABUJA SUNDAY SCHOOL … · 5.05.2020  · MAY 3, 2020 TOPIC: PROPHESYING RESTORATION LESSON TEXT: Zephaniah 3:14-20 DEVOTIONAL READING: Psalm 47 MEMORY VERSE:

2.4 How can we ensure that we are not guilty of using dishonest measures (fraud) and trusting in riches? 12 vs 7,8, Rev.3:17. Relate this to Rom.12:10.

2.5 God is a God of justice and punishes disobedience. But he would rather discipline us to restore us than punish us for evil. hence, he would want us to come to him than going to Egypt for help. In what ways do we still go to Egypt today?

CONCLUSION: Sometimes, we feel secure because of what we have got or obtained, what we own or who we know. At every opportunity, we want others to know we have the advantage. Oftentimes, we try to solve our problems by way of people we know and stuff we have, that is like running back to Egypt for help. We do this by leaving God out of the situation. But the word today is a call to return to your God oh Israel, maintain love and justice, wait for God and He will come true. PRAYER; Dear Lord help us to be practical in our profession to follow you, and by your holy spirit convict us when we go astray. Help us to always trust first and always and grant us grace to wait for your salvation Amen. THOUGHT TO REMEMBER Let love and justice characterise your life

JUNE 7, 2020 TOPIC: LISTEN TO GOD’S WISDOM DEVOTIONAL READING: PROVERBS 34:11-18 LESSON TEXTS: PROVERBS 1:1-4, 7, 8, 10, 20-22, 32-33 MEMORY VERSE: “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge but fools despise wisdom and instructions.” Proverbs 1:7 LESSON AIMS: At the end of this lesson, participant will be able to:

1. Summarize the nature of biblical wisdom. 2. Contrast biblical and on biblical wisdom. 3. Propose a way for adults to model biblical wisdom at home and

work.

INTRODUCTION We all talk about and admire wisdom, but are in difficulty regarding its definition and meaning. Some psychologists have offered three (3) templates to help untie the dilemma: practical wisdom, philosophical and benevolent wisdom. The Bible confirms that wisdom is manifest in diverse ways Ex. 31:2, 3, Deuteronomy 34:9, 2 Samuel 20:16-22 in Old Testament times. It has a root in God as the only source. Wisdom acquired a body as Christ became incarnate. This New Testament emphasis is that our Lord was an unexpected and even unwelcome source of wisdom as He wowed all who heard Him speak. However, to get a proper setting, we must appreciate extant cultures, as apart from Israel‟s they took interest in what wisdom is and how to obtain it. Egypt Sumar, Syrians Babylonian and Africa all have wisdom books or oral traditions to that effects, even though they miss the mark of true biblical wisdom, which is God given and God driven and can be accessed through the fear of God. The worldly view is that wisdom is hidden, secret, mystical and esoteric. Life in its fullness is in Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and song of songs. The Sermon on the Mount (Beatitudes Matt. 5:3-12), the Vices and the virtues of Galatians 5:19-21. Also, Apostle Paul‟s thoughts about ethical behaviour and the meaning of the resurrection. Finally, Jesus with His deep knowledge of the law‟s moral teaching gave the Sermon on the Mount which can be called wisdom literature. Wisdom, therefore, is the art of the auto-successful living in the light of God‟s Word. It is a must learn, teach and understand. QUESTIONS SECTION 1: Introducing a Book (Proverbs 1-4) 1.1 Who wrote the book of proverbs and for what purpose was it written. Proverbs

1:3 1.2 Name some cultural attempt by Man to think and produce literally words or

thought devoted to wisdom. 1.3 Both the Old and the New Testaments contain a variety of books and verses

known as wisdom literatures. Name others and their author? 1.4 Given 1.1. to 1.3. what differences are there between the book of Proverbs and

other extant words of thought? 1.5 Proverbs 1-9 is our focus in this month of June as it relates to wisdom, how do

you define godly wisdom?

Page 13: NEW ESTATE BAPTIST CHURCH ABUJA SUNDAY SCHOOL … · 5.05.2020  · MAY 3, 2020 TOPIC: PROPHESYING RESTORATION LESSON TEXT: Zephaniah 3:14-20 DEVOTIONAL READING: Psalm 47 MEMORY VERSE:

1.6 What steps can we take to ensure that we do not only hear but also heed and apply God‟s wisdom; How would our conduct affect the believer, the unbeliever?

SECTION 2 Introducing Wisdom Proverbs 1:7-10, 20-22, 32-33 2.1 How does the author of proverbs introduce wisdom? Proverbs 1:7, 9:10, 15:33, Eccl.

12:13-17, Job 28:28, Psalm 111 2.2 The word fear conjures a wide range of meanings. What does fear mean in the

context of our study? 2.3 What one step do you need to take to be more committed and devoted to

God? What role will fear of the Lord play in your life? 2.4 How should a teacher in the children department respond when he/she realizes

that a particular parental instruction to a child is unbiblical? 2.5 Notice the use of the term of endearment “My son” in our study, what is your

understanding of the biblical usage of this term? CONCLUSION Coming to the end of this study, a lot will agitate our minds about its author, Solomon. While we may not be tempted by his excesses with women, we should view him with compassion. We may taunt him with statements like “physician thyself” but appreciating the fact that the bible explains our feeling (Psalm 19:1, Rom. 1:21-25). The bible also confirms what we know as it separates itself from myths, its firmly promises our desire, hope. Our occupation, therefore should be constant appraisal along the way and the heeding of the warning, “If you think you are standing firm be careful so that you don‟t fall” (1 Cor. 10:12). Here lies wisdom. PRAYER Father, help us to heed your call to wisdom. As we do, may we lead others to heed your voice as well. In Jesus‟ name we pray. Amen THOUGHT TO REMEMBER Fear the Lord and learn wisdom

JUNE 14, 2020 TOPIC: VALUE WISDOM DEVOTIONAL READING: PROVERBS 2:12-22 LESSON TEXT: GENESIS 39; PROVERBS 2 MEMORY VERSE: “For the Lord gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.” Proverb 2:6 LESSON AIMS: After participating in this lesson, we will be able to state,

1. Some promises and blessing associated with godly wisdom. 2. Compare and contrast uses of the words wisdom, knowledge,

understanding, treasure and discretion. 3. Learn to observe and record when godly wisdom has preserved us.

INTRODUCTION The introduction of last week lesson will suffice for this week‟s but the question is what value do we ascribe or attract to wisdom. Do we see it in the light of a jewel of inestimable value or was it worth the while for Joseph to be checked all through? What is the wisdom behind a multiple Olympic gold medallist act of giving up another chance at glory for a teammate who has never won one and is about to retire? What value or premium do you place on wisdom? QUESTIONS SECTION 1: THE EARTHLY FATHERS PLEA PROVERBS 2:1-5 1.1 “My Son” demotes a term of endearment; how would you explain its usage in

the above scripture? 1.2 How would the addressed go about being more receptive to wisdom? 1.3 How would the following verses caution and challenge him in this regard; Acts

17:18, 1 Cor. 1:20; Col. 2:3 1.4 In actual terms, the recipient of the earthly father‟s plea is a believer, how

would he have received initial instruction as a building block of his faith Prov. 22:6 and who ultimately would be his role model? Phil. 2:5-10, 2 Tim. 1:5-8

SECTION 2: HEAVENLY FATHER’S WORD PROVS 2:6-11 2.1 Reiterating last week question 1.5, we ask again, who is the source of wisdom?

How do you determine His value? Prov. 2:6-8 2.2 Consider the following verses of scripture Matt. 7:24-28. How do they relate to

wisdom and its source being from God? 2.3 What steps can we take to acknowledge more consistently the reality of God‟s

constant protection and what should others notice when that happens? Ps. 91:3-6

2.4 Contrast wisdom and foolishness. Prov. 9:1 2.5 Why did the scriptures call the following wise people; Joseph, Moses, Bezallel,

Joshua, David, Abigail, Solomon, David, Stephen, Paul, Christ Jesus. 2.6 What valuable roles did they play to merit the accolades? Acts 7:10, Acts 7:20-

22, Ex 31:1-5, Deut. 34:9, 2 Sam 14:20; 1 Sam 25:3, 1 Kings 3:5-14; 4:29-34, Dan. 5:11-12, Matt 2:1-12; Acts 6:8-10, 2 Pet 3:15-16, Luke 2:40, 52, 1 Cor. 1:20-25.

2.7 Should you set a goal to gain more discretion so that understanding may result, or should you set a goal to gain more understanding so that discretions may

result? Do these scriptures: Proverbs. 1:4; 2:2-3,6 ;3:13; Prov.8:1; 10:23; Psalms31:23; 37:28 help form your answer?

CONCLUSION From our last of wisdoms hall of fame, we can deduce that they all had on ongoing and effective walk with God. Little wonder therefore that He bestowed on them invaluable gifts of wisdom to further His work and therefore fulfil destiny. Our challenge, therefore, today involves an intense search and crying out for rich spiritual milk enrooting serious self-examination of ourselves to determine our walk with Him. We should all strive to imbibe the all-important value of wisdom, knowledge and understanding in the things of God. Children must strive to know what King Josiah knew about the Lord, and encouraged in their quest by godly parents. PRAYER Heavenly Father, in a world where many mock and scorn You and Your Word, You are still the only wise God. Help us to keep our thoughts, words, and deeds in tune with Your wisdom and not allow many distractions around us to quell our seeking spirit in Jesus name; Amen THOUGHT TO REMEMBER God‟s wisdom never depreciates in value.

JUNE 21 2020 TOPIC: RECEIVE WISDOM’S GIFTS DEVOTIONAL READING: JOB 28:12-28 LESSON TEXTS: JOB 1, 42; PROVERB 8 MEMORY VERSE: “Choose my instructions instead of Silver, knowledge rather than choice gold for wisdom is more precious than rubies and nothing you desire can compare with her.” Proverbs 8:10-11 LESSON AIMS: At the end of this lesson, each learner will be able to:

1. Describe the blessing of godly wisdom 2. Explain why the benefits of godly wisdom far outweigh those

associated with material wealth. 3. Write or say a prayer on behalf of someone for God‟s wisdom to

guide his or her life style.

INTRODUCTION The general introduction of the lesson of 7th June is relevant here as wisdom gives instructions to all and sundry from every nook and cranny of town. Pleading and emphasizing the riches embedded in her instruction and making all important claims of all that her valuable qualities are better than riches, gold and rubies. If we heed her call we will be better for it. QUESTIONS I. Section 1: WISDOM’S WORDS PROVS 8:8-14 1.1 What valuable gifts are apparent from wisdom‟s mouth? Prov. 8 1.2 Words are very valuable; describe the characteristics of wisdom‟s words and

their effects on those that heed them. 1.3 What steps can we take to ensure that our words/speeches live up to the

standard of proverbs 8:8? 1.4 Most believers can be said to be very upright and true yet grey areas exist in our

lives which rear their ugly heads like little foxes. How might prov. 8:8 address the concept of a “little white lie” ?

1.5 What should be the most important factor in the life of a believer who has chosen to grow in wisdom rather than in the pursuit of material wealth?

1.6 “Money is only a means to an end and when you don‟t have it, that‟s the end”. What is your reaction to this criticism?

1.7 What is “wisdom doubling” what would your neighbours notice if this happen to you; what would you give up to make time to have it?

II. Section 2: WISDOM’S WEALTH PROVS 8:17-21 2.1 a) What hidden wealth does wisdom promise within the 5 verses under review?

b) To whom were they promised 2.2 What is “Real Treasure” and enduring wealth and prosperity. Verse 18, Ps. 73:16-

20 2.3 What chances would you have to teach children to distinguish between worldly

wisdom and godly wisdom? How would you pray for such chances to come? CONCLUSION

From all we have done, you may be asking, can‟t we be wise and wealthy? Of course, we can as scripture records those who were both (Gen. 41;41-44, Job 1:1-5; 42:12-17). However, the bible warms against anything that can derail us in our relationship with God. Despite all that the world offers, loss of wisdom results in tragedy for both body and soul. Wisdom‟s plea is for us to choose her and regardless of all that we amass in terms of riches; wisdom bestows rich inheritance to those who love her. PRAYER Father, thank you for the abundance of gifts that you provide to those who choose to heed the call of wisdom. Thank You for examples of that wisdom which has shaped us over the years. Help us to be such examples to those in our spheres of influence. In Jesus‟ name; Amen THOUGHT TO REMEMBER Before wisdom‟s treasure can be opened and treasured, they must be sought.

JUNE 28, 2020 TOPIC: FEAST, CELEBRATE, COME TO WISDOM’S BANQUETS DEVOTIONAL READING: PSALM 119:97-104 LESSON TEXTS: PROVERBS 9:1-6, 8-10, 13-18 MEMORY VERSE: “Leave your simple ways and you will live and walk in the way of insight.” Prov. 9:6 LESSON AIMS: After participating in this lesson, each learner will be able to: 1 Summarize the two lifestyles personified by the two women. 2 Compare and contrast the appeals personified in the two women. 3 Role-play planning a dinner party both to seek and honour wisdom.

INTRODUCTION We ended last week by confirming wisdom‟s desire to give enduring wealth to those who love her. In our lesson today, there is wisdom and there is folly both have invited guests to their house warming parties. Whose invitation will you accept? For God‟s people and given all that wisdom has taught and bestowed in the month of June, our choice should be clear for wisdom offers a better life-changing-meal. The disciples asked the Lord where the Passover meal would be eaten; their participation became the precedence for the Lord‟s Supper which continues to be the most important for us. QUESTIONS SECTION 1: WISDOM’S HOME (Proverbs 9:1-6) 1.1 Welcome to wisdom‟s home! How can you describe this abode of wisdom in

terms of preparation and in terms of solidity and provision? Matt. 7:24-29, Isa. 25:6, Gen. 27:28, Isa. 55:1-2

1.2 Perfect preparation and provision. What seems to be lacking? Provide all answer with the following passages in mind; Lk. 14:16-23, Prov. 9:3-6, Jn. 7:37

1.3 Relate the following passages to wisdom‟s invitation to her very important party; - Jn. 7:37, Isa. 55:1-2, Jn. 4:10, 14, Jn. 6:35, Rev. 22:17, Prov. 1:20, 21

1.4 Wisdom‟s party is a life changer; what specific lifestyle change can you make, to reduce the „noise‟ that interferes with your hearing of wisdom‟s call and what accountability check can you adopt to keep you from relapsing into this vice?

1.5 Whatever, the detestable practice in 1:4 make for yoking, what types of relationship should you cut off from (if any) to avoid ungodly influences? How does your answer validate or negate Matt. 28:19-20, John 3:16, 1 Cor. 5:9-11.

SECTION 2: BECOMING WISE; PROV 9:8-10 2.1 From 1 Cor. 3:19, 2 Cor. 1:12 etc. we know there‟s earthly wisdom but real and

godly wisdom comes from God, How do we get wisdom? James 1:5-8, Matt. 7:7, Prov. 2:3-6, Prov. 4:5-7.

2.2 What are some ways to make it safe for fellow believers to give us constructive criticism?

2.3 Is there only form of wisdom from the world? How would the following passages shape your response? Acts 5:35-39, 1 Cor. 2:6-7, 10:20-21, Col. 2:23, James 3:13-16.

SECTION 3: FOLLY’S HOME PROV. 9:13-18 3.1 Describe the women personified as folly, her house her imitation and parting

gifts. 3.2 Contrast wisdom with folly – Prov. 9:1 in terms of characteristics, reputation and

results. 3.3 Summarize Ps. 119:97-104 CONCLUSION From Adams fall we appreciate God‟s goodness and the choices left for us to be in good standing with Him. His anticipation of the fall led Him to put in place a redemption plan, Jesus who had been slain for us even from the foundation of the world. Obedience brings us to a closer relationship with God both now and in eternity. His mercy has guaranteed our redemption. All these can be found in our study today. So we are in good stead, if we heed wisdom‟s invitation and dime with her‟s. The opposite is destruction – which party will you attend? PRAYER Father in Heaven, thank you for Jesus, who reveals His treasures of wisdom and knowledge to those who seek Him. Thank you for your holy scriptures, which are able to make us wise concerning salvation. Grant us grace and strength to follow the way of wisdom, knowing that it is the way to life. We pray in Jesus‟ name; Amen THOUGHT TO REMEMBER The path of folly is not a lifestyle. It is a death-style.

JULY 5, 2020 TOPIC: VINDICATING WISDOM LESSON TEXT: Matthew 10:1-14; Matthew 11:1-19 MEMORY VERSE: The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, “here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinner.” But wisdom is proved right by her deeds. Matthew 11:19 LESSON AIMS: After participating in this lesson, each member of the class will be able to:

1. Summarize Jesus' description of John the Baptist. 2. Explain why the generation that Jesus criticized displayed a lack of

wisdom in its evaluation of both Him and John the Baptist. 3. Make an effort to improve in the exercise of godly wisdom.

INTRODUCTION Today's lesson explains the seemingly vast gulf between John the Baptist and Jesus Christ, and the variety of opinions surrounding them. Many loved them; many hated them. Choosing to hate the two is choosing to hate God's wisdom. Jesus met with hostility from infancy (Matthew 2:13). John the Baptist was arrested and beheaded (Matthew 14:1-12). Yet this hostility against God's wisdom was the means by which God fulfilled His wisdom, for Jesus died not merely as an innocent victim but as the willing and worthy sacrifice for the sins of humanity (Matthew 20:28). QUESTIONS SECTION 1: JOHN THE BAPTIST (Matthew 11:7-15) 1.1 Who is John… a reed swayed by the wind or a man dressed in fine clothes? When

you hear the gospel preached, what matters more: the outward appearance of the messenger or the quality of the message itself?

1.2 What will you do to demonstrate a faithfulness to God when it would conflict with cultural expectations?

1.3 Contrasting Matthew 15:12-14 with 17:27, how will you tell when the offence caused by going against cultural expectations will do more harm than good?

1.4 What is your understanding of John 11.12? Discuss.

SECTION 2. THIS GENERATION (MATTHEW 11:16-19) 2.1 What are the causes of spiritual deafness? How do you ensure that you do not

become hard of hearing in a spiritual sense? Hebrews 3:15. 2.2 What will motivate you to conquer stubbornness with trust? In what situations

have you seen people refusing to trust because of stubbornness? What can we learn from this? 1 Samuel 15:23; Proverbs 8:13; Romans 2:5.

CONCLUSION The gospel has always been sharply criticised. Jesus inspired joyous faith from many but received violent opposition from others. God's wisdom appeals to some people as it addresses their deepest needs. But it repels others as it challenges their self-rule.

Circumstances can prove discouraging at times, but trusting that Christ now and will reign fully in the future can provide strength and meet even the biggest challenges. In the strength we have in Christ, we witness the vindication of God‟s wisdom. PRAYER Father, as we rely on Your power in good times and bad, teach us to trust Your wisdom. May we not be so self-centred that we fail to hear Your wisdom… wisdom that corrects wrong ideas and expectations. We pray in Jesus name amen. THOUGHT TO REMEMBER What seems like foolishness to human is sometimes the wisdom of God.

JULY 12, 2020 TOPIC: THE BOY JESUS LESSON TEXT: Ecclesiastes 3:1-15; Luke 2:39-52 MEMORY VERSE: The child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him. Luke 2:40. LESSON AIMS : After participating in this lesson, each learner will be able to:

1. Recall key elements of the story of the boy Jesus in the temple. 2. Explain how Jesus‟ defying of expectations was grounded in His

unique nature and calling. 3. Make a commitment to choose godly wisdom over secular wisdom at

all times.

INTRODUCTION

The book of Ecclesiastes explores the accumulated wisdom of its time and place. King Solomon alternates between principles of wise living and his own discouraged impression that “all of it is meaningless “(2:17). But in the end, he concludes that the purpose of human life is to remember the Creator before our lives slip away from us (12:1). Jesus‟ uniqueness is evident from the beginning (Luke. 1:32, 35). As his story unfolds, we see that Jesus is greater than all others because he has the nature and authority of God Himself (Philippians 2:6). How we understand something so unusual, something that is fundamentally different from every other thing, is answered by today's lesson. QUESTIONS SECTION 1: WISDOM IN SEASONS (Ecclesiastes 3:1, 7b)

1.1 There is a time and a season. Discuss 1.2 What is the wisdom in knowing when to keep silent or when to speak up? James

1:19. What is your plan for improvement? James 1:5.

SECTION 2: WISDOM IN EXCEPTIONS (Luke 2:39-52)

2.1 What would you say is a minimum amount of time that parents should set aside weekly to devote to their children‟s growth in godly wisdom? Proverbs 22:6, 29:15, 17; Deuteronomy 11:19. What should happen during that time?

2.2 Under what circumstances, if any, should you let someone wrestle with an issue for a few days rather than providing immediate help? Why? 1 Samuel 23:16; Isaiah 35:3; Hebrews 12:12.

2.3 Wisdom and grace. In what ways can we nurture these traits in younger Christians?

2.4 How does Luke 2:49 speak to the priorities you need to adopt or adjust. How will you do that in ways other than adjusting your time expenditures?

2.5 At what stage are you in your Bible study? Do you understand what you're reading? Joshua 1:8; Ephesians 3

CONCLUSION Ecclesiastes speaks of the regularity of life's cycles, showing the wisdom of understanding circumstances. As people called into fellowship with Jesus, Christians are to follow God's purpose in mundane, daily ways- ways that can give way suddenly to our saying and doing the unexpected. God's will can run counter to conventional expectations on many occasions. Expect the world to scold us for defying its expectations as we continue to follow in the surprising direction of Jesus „footsteps. PRAYER Father, challenge us to grow in Your wisdom as Jesus grew. In His name we pray. Amen. THOUGHT TO REMEMBER Being about our Father's business is our task - no matter what.

JULY 19, 2020 TOPIC: THE WISDOM OF JESUS LESSON TEXT: Mark 7:1-23; Mark 6:1-6; MEMORY VERSE: “When the Sabbath came, He began to teach in the synagogue, and many who heard him were amazed. “Where did this man get these things? “they asked. “What's this wisdom that has been given him? What are these remarkable miracles he is performing? Isn't this the Carpenter? Isn't this Mary's son and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas and Simon? Aren't his sisters here with us?” And they took offense at him.” Mark 6:2, 3. LESSON AIMS: After participating in this lesson, each learner will be able to:

1. Identify lack-of-wisdom factors in the rejection of Jesus in Nazareth. 2. Explain Jesus' response to that rejection. 3. Determine to identify and change any besetting tendency to reject

godly wisdom.

INTRODUCTION Jesus though extraordinary, seemed ordinary in many ways. He was born into a poor family from an insignificant village. In ministry, He attracted great support as a rabbi and a prophet, but also great opposition. Worst of all, He died the shameful, tortuous death of a notorious criminal. Today's lesson narrates one of the most dramatic instances in which people respond to Jesus out of their familiarity with His ordinances. We will wonder how anyone could have ignored how exceptional Jesus was, but we will also realize our own tendency to take for granted our Lord who has become so familiar. QUESTIONS SECTION 1: HOMEWARD BOUND (Mark 6:1)

1.1 What preparations might a Christian make to ensure that interactions with hometown folks have the best chance of being taken in a positive way?

1.2 Which of those preparations would be appropriate and inappropriate in non-hometown contexts? Why?

1.3 A Christian for many years may assume that he/she knows everything to know about Jesus, resulting in an overly casual approach to Him. How do we avoid this pitfall? 1 Corinthians 10:12.

SECTION 2: NEIGHBORS WEIGH IN (Mark 6:2, 3)

2.1 What are some good ways to sidestep the question “What do you do for a living?” so that the one asking doesn't develop misconceptions based on your occupation?

2.2 In what circumstances might voicing one‟s past or present occupational credentials serve to advance the gospel (compare Acts 23:6)?

Page 25: NEW ESTATE BAPTIST CHURCH ABUJA SUNDAY SCHOOL … · 5.05.2020  · MAY 3, 2020 TOPIC: PROPHESYING RESTORATION LESSON TEXT: Zephaniah 3:14-20 DEVOTIONAL READING: Psalm 47 MEMORY VERSE:

SECTION 3: JESUS IMPEDED (Mark 6:4-6)

3.1 “A prophet is not without honour except in his own town, among his relatives and in his home. “Discuss. V. 4; Luke 13:33-35.

3.2 Under what circumstances, if any, will you be prepared to quote Mark 6:4 in reference to how hometown folks react to your witness?

3.3 When finding yourself in a hostile environment, how will you know whether you should stay put or move on? Matthew 7:6; Mark 6:11; Acts 18:9-11

CONCLUSION Far from yearning to be humble, we often long to be grand. This is how God's wisdom challenges us to our core. The good news of Jesus teaches us that God's goodness is usually manifested in the lives of ordinary believers and in the fellowship of ordinary churches. If we expect to experience it only in grandiose ways, we will overlook His “ordinary “works in our lives. Prosperity, victory, status, security--- these do not happen in a village like Nazareth visited by a carpenter who used to live there. Yet in Jesus‟ humility, God's wisdom was fully expressed. God still embodies His wisdom which appear utterly ordinary. When we feel stuck in our own ordinariness and lowliness, we can take heart that God continues to do the work of His kingdom in people like us. PRAYER Almighty God, we ask You to open our eyes to see clearly the work You are doing around us, in us, and through us in Jesus name we pray. Amen.

THOUGHT TO REMEMBER God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things.

JULY 26, 2020 TOPIC: WISDOM TO FOLLOW LESSON TEXT: Proverbs 3:13-18; 8:32-36; John 14:1-14. MEMORY VERSE: “Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the light. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6. LESSON AIMS: After participating in this lesson, each learner will be able to:

1. State an unwise reaction to Jesus„s declarations. 2. Contrast that unwise reaction with Jesus's wise response. 3. Identify one way better to commit to following Jesus in a culture

driven by social media.

INTRODUCTION Christ has gone ahead to prepare a place for us. But this place is only for those who are preparing themselves to be there. We prepare through faith in Jesus. Exercising such faith is an everyday task that requires intentional effort. How is your preparation coming along? QUESTIONS

SECTION 1: THE WAY INTRODUCED (John 14:1-4)

1.1 What techniques can you adopt to replace worry with trust? 1.2 Without giving directive advice, how would you use Matthew 6:25-34 to counsel

chronic worrier who says “I'm not worried, I‟m concerned. “? How would you use Luke 11:24-26, if at all, to stress the replacement aspect?

SECTION 2: THE WAY REVEALED (John 14:5-7)

2.1 What is the deep understanding of John 6 as listed below: a) “I am the way. John 10:9; Hebrews 10:19-22. b) “and the truth John 4:24; 1:1-5, 14. c) “and the life. John 1:4; 5:26; 10:10; Ephesians 2:18.

2.2 How would you respond to the declaration that the “ one route view” is narrow-minded?

SECTION 3: THE WAY EXPLAINED (John 14:8-14)

3.1 Using only the example of Jesus, how would you describe God the Father to an unbeliever? What are some things we are able to teach about God only because of Jesus?

3.2 What spiritual guards can you put in place to stay focused on the evidence that proves the truth of Christianity.

3.3 What types of prayers might or might not be prayed for depending on the motives of the one who is doing the asking (James 4:3)?

CONCLUSION In Jesus of Nazareth, we indeed see God! Fully human and fully divine, Jesus spoke and acted with authority that belongs to God alone. For this reason, His followers came to understand that God was personally present in Jesus. The God who is incarnate in Jesus is patient, as Jesus was patient with His disciples. He is just, as Jesus was just with the mighty and the lowly. He is gracious, generous, and merciful beyond comparison, as Jesus willingly gave His life for the unworthy, even for His enemies. To know Jesus is to know God. To reject Jesus is to reject God. To follow God's path of wisdom is to follow in the path of Jesus, to love and serve as He did.

PRAYER Heavenly Father, as You are revealed to us in Jesus, empower us by the Holy spirit to live according to the pattern You set forth so others see You in us. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

THOUGHT TO REMEMBER To know the Son is to know the Father.

AUGUST 2, 2020 TOPIC: FAITH AND WISDOM LESSON TEXT: James 1:1-11 DEVOTIONAL READING: Isaiah 40:1-8 MEMORY VERSE: “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you” James 1:5 LESSON AIMS: After participating in this lesson, each member of the class will be able to:

1. Identify double-mindedness as a hindrance to receiving wisdom from God

2. Explain the connection between lacking wisdom and being “double minded” and “unstable” (James 1:8)

3. Write a prayer requesting God‟s wisdom while confessing the sin of double-mindedness that hinders receiving such wisdom.

INTRODUCTION “In 2014, a South African preacher made his congregation eat grass to 'be closer to God' before trampling on them. Under the instruction of Pastor Lesego Daniel of Rabboni Centre Ministries, dozens of followers dropped to the floor to eat the grass at his ministry in Garankuwa, north of Pretoria after being told it would 'bring them closer to God.” How could people believe such an insane thing? Why did it happen? How could people do such a thing without asking questions? Why didn‟t they use common sense and wisdom which show that eating grass was wrong? These were people of faith, who believed like many others that doubt the application of wisdom and questioning are antithetical to faith and a threat to religious life. This study will therefore attempt to find out if there is any relationship between faith and wisdom. Should we jettison wisdom because we have faith? QUESTIONS SECTION 1: Enduring Trials (James 1:1-4)

1.1 Discuss James 1:2 1.2 How do you advise people who think it is worthless to pray for wisdom in times

of trials? Psalms 3:5, 1.3 What is your response to Christians who believe that a Christian cannot suffer?

John 16:33 1.4 Explain briefly, how the trying of our faith bring faith and wisdom. 1.5 What should be appropriate Christian response to trials? 1.6 What are some ways church leaders can exercise their God authority without

being dictatorial in the process? Would the approach be different if it‟s at home or church?

SECTION 2: Seeking Wisdom (James 1:5-8) 2.1 How is the wisdom of this world different from divine wisdom? (prov. 2:3-6, 1

kings 3:9-10)

Page 29: NEW ESTATE BAPTIST CHURCH ABUJA SUNDAY SCHOOL … · 5.05.2020  · MAY 3, 2020 TOPIC: PROPHESYING RESTORATION LESSON TEXT: Zephaniah 3:14-20 DEVOTIONAL READING: Psalm 47 MEMORY VERSE:

2.2 In your own pinion, why do you think a doubtful person cannot receive divine wisdom? Matthew 21:21, MARK 11:24

2.3 Why is important for Christians to remain steadfast in times of trials? 2.4 What are some ways to encourage a friend who feels God is not answering his

prayers because of a lack of faith. Is Roms.8:28 relevant? 2.5 What do you understand by double-mindedness? And why is it a sin? James.4:8

SECTION 3: Handling Wealth (James 1:9-11)

3.1 Is wealth an indication of godly wisdom? Ecclesiastes 9:11; 13-17 3.2 How would you explain James teaching to a wealthy person in a way that he

doesn‟t see wealth as sin?

CONCLUSION We need wisdom to live successful Christian lives here on earth. God gives wisdom and understanding to His people which are prerequisites for successful Christian living (Isaiah 11:2). God is willing to give wisdom to anyone who asks of Him. However, we must be careful about how and where we acquire wisdom. The wisdom of this world may look pleasant for a moment but will ultimately end in futility. We must therefore, depend on God for wisdom especially in times of trials. When we seek God wholeheartedly and desire a deeper understanding of His will through His word, we would be able to become the kind of people He desires. PRAYER Father, in the midst of the trials that his life presents, teach us to seek wisdom and guidance from you, the only THOUGHT TO REMEMBER In every aspect of life, God invites us to seek His wisdom

INTRODUCTION For Chinese Bamboo Farmer to be successful in his trade, he has to decide in his heart to go into the trade. Then, he acquires adequate information which he must apply meticulously in order to be successful. This is because; the Chinese bamboo tree is one of the most remarkable plants on earth. Once the gardener plants the seed, he will see nothing but a single shoot coming out of the bulb - for five full years! That tiny shoot, however, must receive daily food, water and nurture as prescribed to grow. During all the time the gardener is caring for the plant, the exterior shoot will grow less than an inch. At the end of five years, however, the Chinese bamboo will perform an incredible feat. It will grow an amazing ninety feet tall in only ninety days! If the Bamboo Farmer stops at mere wishes only, he will not take a step and no bamboo will grow. Faithful speech/decisions must be accompanied with faithful actions. Same way, a believer will not be able to make much profit from his faith if he only receives the Word and refuses to diligently apply the lessons learnt. Daily intake of the Word and putting them into practice will ultimately yield amazing results. Today‟s lesson shall focus on helping understand why it is very important to apply the Word and not stop at merely hearing the Word but doing what the Word says. QUESTIONS SECTION 1: Faithful Speech (James 1:19-21) 1.1 “My dear brothers and sisters, take note of this: everyone should be quick to

listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry” Verse James 1:19 Discuss 1.2 What role does anger management play in human relationships? Ephesians

4:26-27, Proverbs 15:1; 14:29 1.3 Without giving directive advice, how would you counsel a fellow believer who

was prone to anger a d fits of rage? What if he rebuts you with Matthew 11:15-17?

SECTION 2: Faithful Action (James 1:22-25) 2.1 What is your advice to a believer who lives in self-deception despite hearing the

word? Mark 11:12-25, Galatians 6:1, 1 Corinthians 5:1-5, Proverbs 27:5-7,

situations. James 1:26

CONCLUSION If Christianity is all about sitting on the pews to hear God‟s word every Sunday, it will change no one. People are interested in our conducts not only our words. Jesus said, by this shall men know that you are truly my disciples if you love (action) one another as I have loved you”. It was in Antioch that believers were called Christians (meaning: little Christ) for the first time (Acts 11:26). This was not a coincidence! The people saw that the disciples‟ words and actions were in close resemblance to that of Christ (Acts 4:13). You are the epistle that people want to read (2 Corinthians 3:2). You shouldn‟t stop at merely hearing the words; do what it says. PRAYER Heavenly Father, strengthen our resolve to discipline our speech so that it may result in action rather than attitude. May we not be content with mere words as we minister to others in the name of Your Son, Jesus. Amen THOUGHT TO REMEMBER Faithful Actions must accompany faithful speech

AUGUST 16, 2020 TOPIC: FAITH WITHOUT WORKS IS DEAD LESSON TEXT: James 2:14-26 DEVOTIONAL READING: Matthew 18:23-25 MEMORY VERSE: “As a body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead” James 2:26 LESSON AIMS: After participating in this lesson, each member of the class will be able:

1. Describe workless faith 2. Give the proper relationship between faith and works 3. Develop a list of ways to demonstrate faith through action, and

choose one to initiate personally in the week ahead.

INTRODUCTION Today‟s topic is very interesting in the sense that, the argument on the relationship between faith and works sparked a debate between Martin Luther and the Roman Catholic Church within the 16th century AD. This debate is still prevalent in some Christian gatherings today. While Martin Luther hinged on Ephesians 2:8-9 stating that we do not require any form of works to be saved, the Roman Catholic church countered Luther, quoting James 2:26. Does James contradict Paul? With a clearer understanding, Luther‟s attitude towards James mellowed. But many Christians still have a hard time reconciling James with Paul on the role of works. Today‟s lesson focuses on the relationship between faith and works. QUESTIONS SECTION 1: FAITH THAT WORKS (JAMES 2:14-17)

1.1 Describe Saving Faith. Why is it a prerequisite for good works? Romans 10:17, Ephesians 2:8-9

1.2 What are the implications of faith without corresponding good works? Matthew 5:15-16, James 2:14-17

1.3 How can a believer know that his faith is dead or alive? James 2:18,

SECTION 2: VAIN FAITH ( JAMES 2:18-19)

2.1 Discuss how people provide religious cover for their inactions 2.2 Compare James 2:17 and Ephesians 2:8-9. Discuss 2.3 What guardrails can we erect to prevent us from slipping into pride or legalism

as we set a visible example in good deeds? Do the following scriptures: Matt.5:14-16, Matt.6:1-4 inform your answer?

SECTION 3: EXEMPLARS OF FAITH (JAMES 2:20-26)

Page 33: NEW ESTATE BAPTIST CHURCH ABUJA SUNDAY SCHOOL … · 5.05.2020  · MAY 3, 2020 TOPIC: PROPHESYING RESTORATION LESSON TEXT: Zephaniah 3:14-20 DEVOTIONAL READING: Psalm 47 MEMORY VERSE:

3.1 Discuss the faith life of Abraham. How did Abraham demonstrate his faith through works? ((Genesis 12:1-5, Romans 4:11-16, Galatians 3:7-8)

3.2 Having studied the life of Abraham, how would you demonstrate your faith today?

3.3 The issue of faith and works created so make debates within the 16th century AD church, how do you explain to a young believer today that saving faith alone is vain before God?

3.4 What are some ways to stay alert to the danger of what has been called “compassion fatigue” as we help meet the needs of others. Gal.6:9

CONCLUSION Although justification is by faith alone, true faith is living and will always result in good works. Since faith is an invisible virtue, we demonstrate our spiritual profiting through the works that we do. A mere intellectual or mental assent to certain truths without corresponding works, remain useless. Remember; when we stand before God, we will give accounts of what our works on earth. PRAYER Father, may our faith in you not be limited to a mere affirmation of your existence. Instead, may it be manifested in the way we live, including the way we extend help to those in need. In Jesus name we pray, Amen. THOUGHT TO REMEMBER Faith with no works is no faith at all.

AUGUST 23, 2020 TOPIC: TAMING THE TONGUE LESSON TEXT: James 3:1-12 DEVOTIONAL READING: Isaiah 50:4-11 MEMORY VERSE: “The tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what great forest is set on fire by a small spark” James 3:5 LESSON AIMS: After participating in this lesson, each member of the class will be able:

1. List several consequences of speaking with an untamed tongue 2. Explain the effects of misusing the tongue as a believer 3. Write a commitment note to avoid misusing the tongue

INTRODUCTION There are many studies and experiments done on plants in which the same plants were placed in three separate rooms. In one room, kind words were spoken, in the second room harsh words were spoken and in the third room, there was pin-drop silence. The results showed that the plants which were exposed to kind words grew a little more than the other two. What does it show? It shows that words are important. If words could have effect on plants, then imagine what effects they would have on humans. Words shape destinies. “Your world revolves around your words.” Today‟s topic focuses on helping us understand how powerful our words can be and why we must use our tongues well. QUESTIONS SECTION 1: WARNING TO TEACHERS/ BELIEVERS (JAMES 3:1-2, HEBREWS 5:12) 1.1 Why is it important for believers to be careful with words? Matthew 12:36-37 1.2 How can our church effectively help members to evaluate whether they should

become teachers of the word? James 3:1 (b)what can be done to encourage current teachers evaluate whether they have the spiritual gift of teaching? Roms12:6-7;1Cor.12:1-11; Eph.4:11-12

scriptural references. 2.2 Is there a time that a careless statement raised uproar in any of your meeting?

Discuss. What lessons did you learn? 2.3 What are some ways we can control the tongue. Matthew 12:36, Psalm 119:11;

19:14 2.4 What are some safeguards Christians can adopt to prevent boasting? How do

the following Texts help: Psalm 44:8; 94:4; Roms3:25-27; 2Cor.10:7-18;11:10-21 & 2Tim.3:1-5.

SECTION 3: IMAGE OF GOD (JAMES 3:9-12)

Page 35: NEW ESTATE BAPTIST CHURCH ABUJA SUNDAY SCHOOL … · 5.05.2020  · MAY 3, 2020 TOPIC: PROPHESYING RESTORATION LESSON TEXT: Zephaniah 3:14-20 DEVOTIONAL READING: Psalm 47 MEMORY VERSE:

3.1 How does the knowledge of the fact that man is created in the image of God affect the way we use our tongues? Colossians 3:1-10, 1 peter 2:9

3.2 A divided speech is a reflection of the speaker‟s attitude towards God. James 3:9, Discuss

3.3 How can the church identify and help members who are challenged in the use of the tongue?

CONCLUSION “The fact that humans are made in the image of God should spur us to abstain from the wrong use of our tongues.” Many have left the faith because of spiritually damaging utterances Do we faithfully speak words of truth and grace consistently at home, on the job and in church? Are our words full of grace or merely targeted at hurting people? These questions must be personally and sincerely answered by each one of us. The task of taming the tongue is a lifelong task which can be achieved with the help of the Holy Spirit. PRAYER Lord, as we come to see more clearly the destructive power of the tongue, we pray for strength to bridle and restrain our tongues from all forms of evil speech. Transform our words so that they may bring glory to your name. THOUGHT TO REMEMBER The tongue must be controlled

AUGUST 30, 2020 TOPIC: TWO KINDS OF WISDOM LESSON TEXT: James 3:13-18; 5:7-12 DEVOTIONAL READING: Psalm 32:1-11 MEMORY VERSE: “The wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be entreated, full of mercy and good fruit, without partiality, and without hypocrisy” James 3:17 LESSON AIMS: After participating in this lesson, each member of the class will be able:

1. Provide a response to James 3:13a 2. Comparing the heavenly wisdom to earthly wisdom 3. Creating a plan for improvement regarding the one behaviour of

James 3:17 that he or she lacks most.

INTRODUCTION Three friends, Peter, James and John decided to go for a picnic. Peter packed the picnic basket with drinks and sandwich. John carried the basket and they set out for the park 10km away. It took about 2hours to get there. When they arrived, Peter quickly spread the mat and brought out the sandwiches. After checking around, James found out that Peter did not pack the battles‟ opener. They then begged John to make 4hours trip to and fro for the opener. He disagreed “You will finish the sandwiches before I return” John protested. No we won‟t assured Peter and James. After some pleading, John voluntarily set out for the opener. After 5 hours there was no sign of John. They decided to wait for another 3hours still no sign of John. James and Peter after waiting for more than 8hours became very hungry. So, they decided to take one sandwich each. As they were about to eat, John pops out from behind a rock screaming, “I KNEW IT! I‟M NOT GOING AGAIN!” Surprisingly, for all the 8hours they were waiting for John, he was hiding behind one of the rocks monitoring his other friends unperturbed by their hunger. He considered himself smart and clever but clearly, he was foolish; inconsiderate, unmerciful, self-centred, unforgiving, vindictive etc which characterize earthly wisdom. Today‟s lesson shall focus on helping us get a deeper understanding of two kinds of wisdom, heavenly and earthly wisdom with emphasis on the heavenly wisdom. QUESTIONS SECTION 1: IN EDUCATION (JAMES 3:13-18) 1.1 Examine some scientific evolutions/ innovations today, in what ways have the

wisdom of man turned out foolish? 1.2 Discuss the introductory part of the study. What are some other ways people

claim to be wise but eventually act foolishly? Luke 12:16-21; 19:11-23 1.3 Distinguish between heavenly and earthly wisdom. What are their

characteristics? James 3:13-14 1.4 How would you react to folk wisdom that are at variance with the scripture.

For-instance, “Heaven helps those who help themselves”, “Look before you

leap”, “a bird at hand is better than nine in the bush” etc [Ecclesiastes 9:11, Proverbs 3:5, Luke 15:1-32]

SECTION 2: HEAVENLY WISDOM DURING PERSECUTION (JAMES 5:7-12) 2.1 Are there instances where believers may be allowed to swear? Give instances if

any (James 5:12) 2.2 Abraham lied in other to save his life. Discuss certain actions people put up to

avoid being persecuted? Are they justified? Discuss (Genesis 20:1-18, Genesis 26:8-11)

2.3 Mention earthly wisdom being applied by some as regards to the second coming of Christ? How do you respond to them?

2.4 Are there some wisdom principles believers can apply as they patiently await the return of Christ? (1 Peter 5:8-14, Mark 13:33, Ephesians 5:15-18, 20)

CONCLUSION You can wreak great spiritual damage in the lives of those you lead or teach if you are not passionate about asking for heavenly wisdom. Any wisdom or knowledge that contradicts the standpoint of the bible should be rejected in its entirety no matter how brilliant they are. Christians must seek and apply the wisdom that comes from heaven in all matters of life (James 3:17) PRAYER Heavenly Father, by the power of Your Holy Spirit this day, help us to focus our hearts and minds on the wisdom that is from above –your wisdom. We ask all these in the name of the wisest person who ever lived: Jesus, Amen THOUGHT TO REMEMBER Choose God‟s wisdom
