October 20th, 2016. Dear Students and Parents, The following brochure highlights the many trips offered to students in grades 7-11 during ESP Week (March 13-17th 2017). A new feature of this year’s ESP week is an evolved trip structure for grades 7 and 8 whereby students in these grades will mix to form composite trips like those offered previously to only grades 9 and 10 students. Composite trip structuring allows for greater diversity in trip offerings and differentiated trip themes and activities to inspire our students to try new experiences, broaden student relationships, and engage more directly with the physical and social landscape in our host country, Tanzania. ESP 2017 Trips are focused around three main objectives: 1. To develop select Approaches to Learning skills (ATLs) 2. To engage students through action and/ or service activities 3. To experience Tanzania’s physical and social landscapes. As you read through this brochure, consider the trip descriptions carefully, especially the special notes section at the bottom of each entry that may contain qualifying statements for trip applicants. Students will be invited to participate in the ESP 2017 Trip Information Fair, held during Extended Homeroom on November 2nd 2016. Faculty members will be available to answer questions about their trip at this time. Trip sign-up will then take place via an online form emailed to each student on November 3rd and will close at 3pm on November 4th. Trip rosters will be subsequently released by the end of November 2016. Please note that students in grade 10 who participated in an existing trip cannot pursue the same trip this year and will need to make a new selection. Students will make a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice with every effort made to appropriate students to a trip of their preference. Students in grade 11 will be automatically allocated to one of the 3 trip possibilities according to their current Diploma Program course selections. IST faculty are very excited about this year’s ESP and are putting together some truly unique and exciting experiential learning opportunities for the students. I encourage you to talk as a family about the various trip destinations and associated activities, noting that some trips have fitness requirements or additional fees associated with them. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me ([email protected]). With best regards, Ms. Kristine Greenlaw ESP Trip Coordinator, Vice- Principal (Secondary)
