We saw a very modern factory from a manufacturer that is actually one of the largest wheel loader manufacturers in the world. We spoke to distributors who assured us that LiuGong was very capable of supporting the products that they manufacture.” According to Equipment East Sales Representative Jim Mullen, the LiuGong loader is ideally suited for the private contractor and the municipal market. “It’s a no frills machine, so you’re not paying for a lot of gizmos that are of no use to a highway department or con- tractor,” he said. “It’s a hard-working machine that gets the job done. expectations at a reasonable price,” said Mullen. The LiuGong machines proved to be up to the task,

Mullen added. “In working in extreme wet and muddy con-ditions, the LiuGong machines really shine. Limited slip dif-ferential on all four wheels comes standard on all LiuGongloaders. As a result, the loaders were able to pull throughdeep mud with a bucket filled with wet, heavy material.”

Keeping Things MovingAs a contractor for more than 30 years, Albanese is aware

of the importance of minimizing downtime.“We have invested heavily in LiuGong parts,” Albanese

said. “We’ve used these machines long enough in our rentalfleet that we know what our parts inventory should consist ofto keep our customers operating and we have made thatinvestment. If one of our customers is down and I can’t gethim running, we have been known to go so far as to taking a

piece of equipment out of our rental fleet and swapping it outuntil we have resolved the problem. But, to be honest withyou, these problems do not arise all that often.” “Furthermore, LiuGong Construction Machinery North

America headquartered in Katy, Texas, has a huge partswarehouse with inventory available for our market,” addedAlbanese.

Deep RootsAlthough Equipment East is a relatively new name for

equipment distribution in New England, the Albanese nameis well recognized within construction circles. In 1978, Giovanni and his brother, Marco, founded a con-

struction company called Albanese Brothers. This companyhad substantial growth primarily as a large utility contractingcompany doing major water, sewer and pump station proj-ects. In 1991, Giovanni and Marco separated their compa-nies. Giovanni and his partner, Andrea Ciano, foundedAlbanese D&S Inc. Today, Albanese D&S continues toshow strong growth with 65 employees and more than $15million in annual sales. In September 2009, when Giovanni Albanese and his

partner, Andrea Ciano, started Equipment East, the day-to-day operation of Albanese D&S was organized by Ciano

Giovanni, along with GildaAlbanese, Marco Albanese and son-in-law,Tim Elliot, spearheaded the service, salesand parts departments of Equipment East.

“We feel that being a high demandingheavy construction equipment customer forover 30 years, who better than us wouldknow what customers’ requirements reallyare,” said Albanese “Our primary goal iscustomer service and satisfaction.”

three years ago,” said Bob Wedekind, projectmanager. “This supports the company’sambition of making the Philips Lightolierfacility a net zero plant and one of the green-est manufacturing facilities in the state ofMassachusetts.”Over the last several years, the facility in

Fall River has been recognized for its sus-tainability efforts by:• Reducing electricity use by 40 percent• Reducing water use by 78 percent• Reducing natural gas use by 25 percent

(we now are at 36 percent)• Reducing volatile organic compound

(VOC) emissions by 98 percentThe single huge wind turbine is just the

latest in Philips’ long line of sustainabilityefforts.“The wind turbine at the Philips Lightolier

facility is a great example of a public-privatepartnership to achieve sustainability goalsand create jobs. Philips worked with the stateof Massachusetts and the Clean EnergyCommission Center to qualify for grants andtax credits in support of the turbine, whilefunding the project,” added Wedekind. “Thisis part of the company’s ambition to makethe Philips Lightolier facility a net zero plantand one of the greenest manufacturing facil-ities in the state. Philips’ funding wenttoward the purchase of the wind turbine, while regional funding went to support thelocal construction and services associatedwith its development.”The wind turbine will stand 40 stories tall

or 415 ft. (126 m) from base to the tip of theblade. The blades alone measure 148 ft. (45m) each, and when fully operational, the tur-bine will have a 2 megawatt capacity. It isexpected to produce about 60 percent of theelectricity needed to power the PhilipsLightolier plant.• Hub height of 262 ft. (80 m) = center of

blades at the top of the tower• Blade Tip Height of 415 ft. (126.49 m) =

415 feet to the tip of the blade when straightup• One of the largest installations in

Massachusetts• The total weight of the structure is 390

tons (354 t)• Each blade is 10 tons (9 t)• The hub is 27 tons (25 t)• The Nacelle (generator and housing at

the top of the tower) is 96 tons (87 t)• The complete tower is 220 tons (200 t)“Philips entered into this project with the

specific goal of looking for a U.S. partner tobuild the wind turbine and did extensiveresearch into companies that could accom-

modate a turbine of this size. Unfortunately, most U.S. companies build smaller, lowercapacity wind turbines, or could not supporta custom project,” said Wedekind. It is truly an international production,

crafted and designed from the greatest man-ufacturing nations on earth. The wind tur-bine has components that come from all overthe world, including Germany, Denmark,France, Italy, China and the United States. Many of the major electrical componentscame from Germany and Austria, theswitches and sensors from Finland,Denmark, France and Italy, the super capac-itor from the United States and the bladesand main stack were made in China. It isonly powered by wind and will generate a 2megawatt capacity. Unlike Cape Cod, where residents contin-

ue to fight the implantation of such large tur-bines, saying they blot the physical and visu-al landscape, the Fall River generator will bereceived in quite a different manner. “There are several differences. This is

only one turbine, not a wind farm and thelocation, Airport Road in Fall River, is anindustrial park, not a residential area,” saidWedekind. “In addition, the turbine is forgenerating power for the plant, not for resi-dential use. Philips worked with local com-munity leaders to share plans and ensureconstant communication on the turbine, aswell as working to answer questions andconcerns about its operation.”Generators of the idea are calling this a

“win-wind” situation.“Everyone gains with this type of project.

The power that is generated will supply 60percent of the plant’s electricity needs andallow the company to invest those savingsback into local jobs to produce energy-effi-cient lighting products right here in theU.S.,” added Wedekind. “During the past sixmonths, Philips has not only worked withthe ILWU, USW, IBEW, and local contrac-tor J.L. Marshall and Sons Inc., and GlynnElectrical, but also has, as a condition of theproject, required that the turbine to be deliv-ered to the Port of Fall River in order toemploy hundreds of people. “Moreover,” Wedekind added, “Wind

energy is a clean, renewable energy sourceunlike many power plants that generate elec-tricity. It doesn’t produce any CO2 and is amore environmentally friendly way to pro-duce power.”There were as many players in this suc-

cessful joint project as there are directionsfor New England winds.“In tandem with employees, business

Collaboration EasesNeighbors’ Concernspartners, governments and non-governmental organizations,we work towards improving our communities and our man-ufacturing practices,” said Wedekind. “In order to develop arenewable energy source on this site, Philips collaboratedwith Fall River Mayor Flanagan, Governor Deval Patrick, the Fall River Conservation Commission, the Fall River CityCouncil, the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center(MassCEC), and the Massachusetts Office of BusinessDevelopment.”

Philips’s business partners include J.L. Marshall and SonsInc., the local trade unions: IBEW, USW and ILWU, GlynnElectric and National Grid.

Perhaps, in the ultimate irony, wind itself will be a signif-icant factor in how, when and how easily the skyscraper-tallturbine will be erected. There is danger to the constructionworkers who must assemble and raise it so high.

“Wind could be a challenge as it might make it difficult forthe construction crew to mount the turbine. At these heights, there are air currents that can pose significant challengessuch as swinging the crane, that make it very difficult/dan-gerous to raise and align the different components of the tur-bine,” said Wedekind.
