New Dimensions in Expression “I've been using the System 6000 as a four engine device connected to my console at BackStage studio in Nashville. Configuring the unit for each application could not be easier allowing me to use it for stereo as well as 5.1 mixes. I must say, at this point, I do not think I could get along without it!” Chuck Ainlay, Nashville Tennessee Since the release of the System 6000 in early 2000, demonstrating our latest technology has been the most gratifying experience for any member of the TC Electronic team worldwide. After spending so much time with potential and existing clients, it felt right to share with you their comments and observations: The Art of sound engineering has for many years been a question of enhancing the expression of the source material, whether it is the soundtrack from a motion picture, a live broadcast or a musical production. In doing so, the engi- neer is restricted by the limita- tions of his tools, turning the tools available into his artistic barriers. With the System 6000 you are now able to put the brush back into your hand. If you are dealing with Mono, Stereo, Surround and 5.1 multi-channel setups, the System 6000 handles any format in your chosen quality. By using room simulation as an instrument you can color your source material with emotions, making the expression grandiose and complex or intimate and simple. TC Electronic’s multi-channel platform has been developed with focus on creative freedom, thus making the engineer able to carry out the full spectrum of his artis- tic vision. Film and Post Production TC's multi-award winning Virtual Space Simulation (VSS™) technology broke new ground and led the way to VSS™5.1, a reverb algorithm conceived especially for multi-channel applications. From rooms with realistic character to purely glossy spaces, the System 6000’s touch screen interface, extensive signal routing system and flexible set of digital and analog I/Os make it indispensable to the Film and Post-production engineer. With TC’s 5.1 room simulation, you get the best of both types of reverb implementations. Place sources with precise accuracy or move them in real time using an on-screen or hardware joystick. Recording Studio Being able to run four VSS™3 or any other constellation of effects algorithms simultaneously makes the System 6000 the perfect solution for any sound production facility. With Sample Rates up to 96kHz, hook it up to your local LAN network, and control it from several TC Icon Remotes. Mastering The MD5.1 (Multi-band Dynamics package) and Toolbox5.1 combined with high jitter rejection makes the System 6000 stand out as the most powerful multi-channel processor ever, especially when dealing with level monitoring, down mixing and bass-management for mastering and DVD production. Covering All Formats Maintaining signal quality when changing between formats is an understandable concern in pro-audio. For instance, collapsing a signal from stereo to mono should not dramatically alter balances in a mix. Many Stereo reverbs show this limitation. Just change to mono and much of the wetness disappears! In 5.1, the effect is even more pro- nounced. A simulation sounding wide and pleasant over five speakers may almost disappear in stereo or mono, if a completely uncorrelated reverb design is not used. All room simulators and reverbs in System 6000 are completely based on DSP intensive uncorrelated design. At TC Electronic, we are as conscious as ever to maintain sound integrity throughout formats and applications. "The flexibility on the System 6000 is an absolute dream. The mix for “Chicken Run” was very complex. There was so much going on that we were having to place the FX on differ- ent stems but still apply the same reverbs. Because of the 6000’s rout- ing, we were able to load the same reverb into different engines and then simply bring up the separate returns on the desk. It meant that we could do the reverbs in just one take, which saved us a lot of time." Howard Bargroff for Chicken Run “For "The Hollow Man", "Elvis Presley That's The Way It Is", "Soarin", "Jerry Goldsmith Concert Music Album" I used the System 6000 for reverb. Ken Caillat, 5.1 Entertainment “On the last three films I’ve worked on, I have used the System 6000 primarily for reverbs on orchestra and solo instruments. I have found that with the control available for source placement, early reflections and reverb parameters, the flexibility and natural sense of space make the 6000 an extremely powerful tool. I have also found the 5.1 EQ, compression/limiting, and matrixing software to be sonically and practically a great solution for the final touch on multichannel material. With the fantastic array of processing options available on the System 6000, the biggest problem you will have is deciding which functions to pass on until you buy your second unit.” Stephen A. Kempster "The System 6000 is stuffed with leading-edge technology, as the gen- uine room simulation and the fabu- lous mastering features. Currently, most processors and DAW's for multi-channel formats rely on phantom imaging because DSP requirements can be kept within a normal "stereo budget". However, phantom image processing and similar old techniques do not take full advantage of a multi-channel installation. In System 6000 the amount of DSP, RAM and data infrastructure is designed to cope with the high demands of multi-channel and high sample rate applications. 5.1 Room Simulation should take unquestionable advantage of such new capabilities: - source localization may be enhanced if panning is based not only on level differences but also involves room rendering utilizing multi-directional reflections. As an added benefit, the listening sweet spot can be widened, thereby giving 5.1 more advantages over traditional 2 channel reproduction. - compared to the pristine room mod- elling taking place in System 6000, microphone arrays in real rooms can- not achieve as much room feeling and localization as VSS™5.1. The VSS™SR (Surround) algorithm is aunique room simulator with new facilitiesfor surround production. The diffusedfield of the simulation is turned into anLt / Rt signal with separate Decay, Leveland Pre-delay parameters for front andrear. The output of the simulator iscompatible with mono, stereo andmatrixed surround reproduction. When used for surround production asurround encoder is not needed, butmonitoring should be done through aDolby ProLogic™ compatible decodingsystem.

The "VSS™5.1 Source" is a true 5.1 RoomSimulator. Multi-directional Early Reflectionpatterns and five uncorrelated Reverbsare integrated in this algorithm. There areseveral ways of incorporating the Centerchannel including TC’s phantom simula-tion.

VSS™5.1 Source or Room Simulation VSS™SR (4:2:4 Surround) Four discrete Input sources, each withtheir own precisely defined Reflectionproperties can be individually positionedin the sound field using the touch screenof the Icon.Imaging and room properties typicallysound more natural than if a certain eventis subjected to the compromises of dis-tant miking, imperfect rooms, arrays ofmicrophones and finally the end listeners’speaker configuration. The Early Reflection patterns maximizelocalization and widen the sweet spot.Consistent location, even outside thespeaker arrays, can be obtained.Perfect fold-down to matrixed surround, stereo and mono is ensured thanks tothe fully uncorrelated rendering usedin VSS™5.1 Source.

“TC Electronic is definitely not resting on the laurels of past success, but has continued to push the envelope on software and hardware. The System 6000 greets the 21st century with a platform designed tomeet the new multi-channel high-resolution delivery formats.”

“One of the key features of the System 6000's reverb design is thatseveral sound sources can be placed at different positions, and whilenatural reverb tends to dilute the ear's ability to resolve location, theTC system actually seems to enhance it. This is particularly effectivewhen mixing for surround.”

Paul White, Sound On Sound (UK), June 2000

MD5.1The MD5.1 algorithm is a multi-channelmulti-band Expander/Compressor, withLimiters and extensive possibilities toassign channels to multiple side-chains.Based on the M5000 MD2 heritage,four-band dynamics are here availablefor 5.1-productions. With MD5.1, dynamicsprocessing is integrated seamlessly intothe 5.1 environment. Some features willnot be available when using multiplestereo dynamic processors. Togetherwith the EQ5.1 and Toolbox5.1, MD5.1 isan innovative package of masteringtools for multi-channel productions.

“With the introduction of their new flagship product the System6000, TC Electronic has taken the futuristic technology and art ofmulti-channel signal processing and delivered it into the market hereand now! The System 6000 comes across as a clear winner!Anyone interested in taking a rock solid step into the future ofprofessional audio should take a serious look at the System 6000.”

VSS™3The VSS™3 algorithm was designedfor a variety of applications rangingfrom music, post to film production. The objective is a "true-to-life"sound enabling the user to mimicenvironments. To establish convincingroom-types the Early Reflectionsmust be carefully reproduced. Arethe surfaces hard or soft, is theroom furnished or unfurnished, is ita small or big car?The configuration is Mono In / StereoOut. The uncorellated design ensuresperfect mono compatibility on theoutputs.

Delay-1The DELAY-1 algorithm is basicallyan easy to handle true stereo digitalDelay.

Delay-2The DELAY-2 algorithm is an advancedbut easy to handle true stereo digitalDelay line. With Cross feedback sec-tion and modulation section. ThisDelay is capable of doing anythingfrom smooth spatial expanding tothe wildest echo effects.

Reverb-3From the M5000 the Reverb-3 providesthe user with a true Stereo Reverb. It is capable of making an exceptionallyclear Reverb sound using a verydense and natural sounding ReverbTail. Decay time can be controlled in

four individually adjustable frequencybands. Using Diffuse and Distancecontrols, sounds can be made inwhich practically no Early Reflectionsare heard. Add a slight modulation tothis to minimize room interactionwith your source material and youhave Reverb-3.

CORE-2The TC Electronic true stereoREVCORE algorithms are particularlygood for small room simulations. Dueto the high density structure the rel-atively short Tails occurring in smallrooms can be convincingly repro-duced. As the VSS™ algorithms areparticularly suited for Film and Postproduction the Rev Core algo-rithm, known from the TC M5000, isalso highly usable.

REV-2The Reverb 2 algorithm initially creat-ed for the M5000 compliments mosttypes of source material. Experiencehas shown that the Reverb 2algorithm is especially good on per-cussive instruments, as it has a verywell-defined precise buildup. Its configuration is Stereo In / StereoOut. The uncorrelated designensures perfect mono compatibility.

PHASER-1This algorithm is the classic M5000stereo Phaser-1.

Chorus-1This algorithm produces a high qualityStereo Chorus and Flanging effect.Furthermore the Chorus-1 algorithmprovides the user with the ability tomake chorusing type Delay effects.

VP2The algorithm may be used for highquality pitch change for monophonicas well as polyphonic material. Becauseof intelligent splicing, it may be usedfor demanding applications like real-timepitch change of entire master trackswhen converting frame rates betweenvideo and film. Channels may belocked to preserve phase relationshipwhile applying pitch change. For music applications, VP2 Stereo isthe best and most unobtrusive pitchcontrol device in the industry today.

The up and down pitch range is +/-one octave. Feedback, cross-feedbackand filters are available for effectpurposes.

MD3Dual Mono and Stereo dynamicsprocessing in three frequency bands.Signal-path uses 48 bit processing.

Make-up gain can be appliedautomatically or manually, so thealgorithm can be set-up to doeverything from strictly limiting tolevel maximization. By offering a trueside-chain split structure, MD3 isalso capable of demanding monomaterial compression/limiting ontwo separate channels, not found inother multi-band dynamics processors.

From an M5000 users point of view, MD2and Toolbox algorithms are broughttogether in this new algorithm, theresolution is increased, sampling ratesgo to 96k, and new features are added. As in its predecessors, look-ahead delaymay be used for improved peak handlingand low distortion operation.

Used for mastering, MD3 can be regard-ed as a high-end mastering tool. M andS components of a stereo signal can beprocessed separately and provide evenmore control making full use of the Spec-tral Stereo Enhancer.

“I have been constantly amazed at what the System 6000 has done, from the obvious asset of high sound quality and realistic surroundreverb, to ergonomic design of both the software and the hardware. Most importantly though, I think that the System 6000 is what wehave all been waiting for!”
