F. HUSAIN wants to paint his latest Bollywood muse Anushka Sharma. The 95-year-old artist admits being absolutely floored by Anushka’s per- formance in Band Baaja Baaraat, so much so that he not only claims to have watched the film eight times already but he also plans to launch a series of paintings on the actress that will be titled ‘Punjab Ki Kudi’. Husain, whose muses in the past have included Madhuri Dixit, Tabu and Amrita Rao, can’t get enough of Anushka these days. “She is the perfect representation of today’s women,” he said about the star recently, adding that he was “extremely impressed with the bubbly Punjabi girl”. “I am only too honoured about the fact that M.F. Husain has watched the film so many times,” Anushka said for her part. “Husain saab has conveyed how much he liked Anushka’s film. Although, we have been informed that he has expressed his desire to capture Anushka on canvas, it is yet to be decided where and when he will paint her,” the actress’s spokesperson confirmed. The veteran painter, whom Forbes magazine once called the Picasso of India, is on a self-imposed exile from India and accepted a citizenship of Qatar where he currently lives. Husain’s admiration for Bollywood beauties is well known. In the mid- Nineties, after watching Hum Aapke Hain Koun!, he declared Madhuri Dixit was his muse and went on to paint a series of paintings of the actress that he signed as Fida. Sub- sequently, he directed his muse in the 2000 film, Gaja Gamini . The film, by Husain’s admission, was as a tribute to Madhuri. In Gaja Gamini , the artist attempted to portray manifestations of woman- hood ranging from the muse of Kali- dasa, Mona Lisa, a rebel, and a musical euphoria with Madhuri depicting each role. A few years later, Husain found a new muse in Tabu and his artistic expression found form by way of his 2004 film Meenaxi — A Tale Of Three Cities. Around the same time, he was also inspired by Urmila Matond- kar’s comic flair. He had intentions of launching a comedy with Urmila as his star but the venture never took off. In 2007, Husain was floored by Amrita Rao after watching Sooraj Barjatya’s Vivah. Impressed by Amrita’s performance in the film, which he said he had watched nine times, Husain had then declared: “She has entered my canvas now. I will construct an entire exhibition around her.” He went on to launch a Vivah series of paintings featuring Amrita. In fact, he had even sent a surprise birthday gift to the Vivah star — a set of three paintings that experts estimated would be worth a crore. Coming back to Anushka, Husain hasn’t announced any plan yet of launching a film with the actress as he generally does, whenever he finds a new muse. “Right now, there has been no mention of his making a film with her,” said the actress’s spokesperson. Anushka is currently touring Chandigarh and other cities in Pun- jab and Haryana to promote her forthcoming film Patiala House. If Husain indeed keeps his word on painting Punjab Ki Kudi, she will have to take out time and travel to Qatar or Dubai for a sitting. The state council has leaned on “legal opinion” given by former chief justice of India A.M. Ahmadi to arrive at its decision. On Satur- day the state council conveyed the decision to Kolkata-based patient rights group, People for Better Treatment (PBT), on whose complaint the MCI can- celled Desai’s licence pending inquiry. Desai, who was also president of the GMC, resigned from the post after he was caught red- handed accepting a bribe of `2 crore from the management of a medical college in Patiala. He was subsequently dismissed from the government medical college at which he was working as a professor. PBT filed a complaint with the GMC against misconduct by Desai last May. When the state council did not act against him, a com- plaint was filed with the MCI which in October decided to can- cel Desai’s licence. This decision prevented Desai from taking over as the president of the World Medical Association. But apparently, the GMC does not believe in the supremacy of the MCI in this matter. It hired the services of Ahmadi and got his legal opinion, according to which MCI cannot be an appel- late authority against a state medical council and has no right to cancel the licence of a doctor registered in a state. “The MCI would become autho- rised to remove the name of any medical practitioner from the Indian Medical Register only upon the removal of the name of the said medical practitioner from the State Medical Register on account of a decision by the concerned state medical council,” GMC has pointed out in its resolution. Clauses 8.7 and 8.8 of MCI’s profes- sional conduct rules — under which action was taken against Desai — empower the central council to be the appellate body. These provisions were specifically added to the rules in 2004 after the Supreme Court directed the government to do so while hearing a PIL filed by PBT. Section 8.7 says the state medical council must complete investigation against errant doctors within six months after which a complainant may appeal to MCI for transfer of the case. Section 8.8 states that one can appeal to the MCI against the decision taken by a state medical council.
