Introduction

DAPRO® DF 21 is a mineral oil based hydrophobic silica containing emulsifier. This water dispersible

defoamer is suitable in high quality waterborne inks, adhesives and industrial coatings. DAPRO® DF 21 is

in particular very useful for glossy wood paints and clear acrylic coatings.

DAPRO® DF 52 is a mineral oil– free, hydrophobic silica defoamer and is suitable for wood coatings, flexo

-inks and paper coatings. DAPRO® DF 52 has excellent defoaming properties and is particularly suitable

for systems where mineral oils are unacceptable in chemical waste water.

Key Benefits

Excellent defoaming properties

Outstanding gloss performance

Effective in wide range of applications

Particularly useful for glossy paints based on acrylic and PU chemistry.

Chemical and Physical Data

DAPRO® DF 21

DAPRO® DF 52

Incorporation

DAPRO® DF 21 and DF 52 show excellent compatibility and are suitable to use in the let down stage of sensitive coatings systems where optical properties are very important (e.g. gloss, transparency). A ladder study should be carried out to optimize the loading level.

Composition A blend of hydrophobic silica, emulsifiers and mineral oil

Colour/ Form Opaque off-white liquid

Level of use

Typically 0.1 – 1.0% on total weight, but should be optimized by testing a concentration ladder.

Storage and Transportation

Must be mixed prior to use

Under adequate storage conditions, DAPRO® DF 21 and DAPRO® DF 52 can be stored for at least 24 months in a non-opened container. Store between 10°C-35 °C (50°F - 95°F). If frozen thaw at room temperature and mix well. Detailed information on handling and safety can be found in the material safety data sheet. Handle in accordance with good industrial hygiene and safety practices.

Composition A blend of esters, hydropho-bic silica and emulsifiers

Colour/ Form Cloudy, light-amber liquid

Formulation and method

The Formulation

DAPRO® DF 21 and DF 52 were tested in three formulations with a special method.

The following formulations were used to test DAPRO® DF 21 and DF 52 regarding their defoaming behav-

iour and gloss and film appearance.

Acrylic clear coat based on NeoCryl XK 95

1 C High Performance wood clear coat, glossy, based on Alberdingk AC 2714 VP

2C High Performance PU-parquet lacquer, satin, based on Alberdingk U 9150

In each test series a formulation was used without a defoamer which represents the negative reference.

The Methods

To test DAPRO® DF 21 and DF 52 in three different formulations the following procedure was conducted:

first, 100 ml paint was put into a 250 ml glass jar. This dispersion was stirred for 5 minutes at 5,000 rpm

using a 3 cm toothed Cowles blade. After this process step, the height of head of foam as well as the

density was ascertained with a paint pycnometer Model 290/ IV (Volume + 50 ml) from Erichsen.

Film application test for parquet lacquers

Parquet lacquers were applied with a special parquet roller to the floor.

In order to simulate the daily process of application we

developed a special test method for evaluating applicabil-

ity and film behaviour for parquet lacquers.

A film was applied with a 250 µm blade on Leneta

charts.

A special sealing synthetic roller (5 mm microfiber)

was saturated with 30 gram paint.

Half of the draw down was rolled ten times to-and-

from to mimic practical application for flooring

systems.

After drying amount and size of the blisters were

visually evaluated.

Rating area: visually from “+++” to “- - -”

Gloss of the not rolled film was measured with a

haze-gloss meter from BykGardner.

( Units @ Angle 85 °)

Gloss was evaluated visually by comparison with the

negative reference.

Rating area: visually from “+++” to “- - -”

The picture illustrates the application of

a formulation with our DAPRO®

defoamer (left) and without defoamer

(right). As is clearly visible, bubbles

appear in the paint formulation without

a defoamer.

1 C High Performance Acrylic Wood Clear Coat, Glossy

(Alberdingk AC 2714 VP)

The best defoaming performance was obtained with DAPRO® DF 21 and DAPRO® DF 52.

In the following practical examples, DAPRO® DF 21 and 52 were tested in different formulations on

its effectiveness in defoaming: Acrylic clear coat (NeoCryl XK 95, high viscosity), high performance

wood clear coat (Alberdingk AC 2714 VP, low viscosity), and a 2C High performance PU-parquet

lacquer (Alberdingk U9150). In these formulations DAPRO® DF 21 and DF 52 were tested against a

market benchmark.

Excellent gloss and film appearance

Acrylic Clear Coat (NeoCryl XK 95)

Systems with DAPRO® DF 21 provide surfaces with high gloss which can be measured with a BYK

– Gardner device. Visual rating distinguishes the systems better and highlights the excellent perfor-

mance of DAPRO® DF 21 .

The measured gloss results were similar, however the film appearance showed large advantages

for DAPRO® DF 21 and the market benchmark.

High Performance 2C PU-Parquet Lacquer, Satin (Alberdingk U9150)

DAPRO® DF 21 has the best overall defoaming performance and gloss behaviour in all

systems. A good mineral oil-free alternative is the DAPRO® DF 52, which shows overall the

same gloss results, although foam reduction behaviour is a little less.
