HOLIDAYS IN NYC

Looking for things to do this holiday season in NYC?

I recommend the holiday Markets in Bryant Park and Union Square.

The markets feature a variety of vendors selling everything from leather goods, homemade chocolates, and pet accessories, to ornaments, beer and bags.

Many of the store windows along 5th Avenue have their holiday decorations up already for everyone to enjoy. Here is a map of a walking tour of all of the main stores:

The Radio City Christmas Spectacular is an annual event that originated in 1933 and is currently seen by over one million people every year. It features the world famous Rockettes and has something for everyone, including live animals on stage, dancing, humour, and traditional Christmas scenes. Tickets can be purchased here:

Rockefeller Center isn’t the only place to go ice skating. You should also try the rink at Central Park (it is much larger) and the rink at Bryant Park. Admission is free at Bryant Park but you still have to pay for skate rentals.

This year the annual lighting of the Christmas Tree in Rockefeller Center will take place on December 4th. It tends to be very crowded and hectic on that night, so my advice would be to wait until later to go to see the tree. It will remain lit until January 7th.

If you do want to watch the tree lighting, ceremony but don’t want to brave the crowds (or the cold!) you can tune into NBC (channel 4 in NYC) at 7:00 on the 4th to watch the ceremony there.

It will also feature musical performances by a variety of celebrities including Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige and Kelly Clarkson.

The American Australian Association will be holding their annual Holiday reception on December 4th at the Australian Consulate on 42nd street. Information on the event can be found at this website below:

I have to be honest and tell you that “real” New Yorkers try to avoid Times Square at the best of times, but they definitely won’t be there on NYE. It will be filled with drunk tourists!

If you show your Australian passport in Bloomingdales or Macy’s, you can get a discount coupon to use throughout the store. (Certain exceptions apply so you will have to ask when you pick it up.)

Groupon or Living Social

There are many sites and mobile apps that have great deals on everything from food & drinks, to exercise classes, to massages or even vacations. The ones I find myself using the most are: Groupon and Living Social. It is a great way to test out new place to eat or hang out at without spending a lot of money. They also offer a lot of discounts on holiday gifts!

Woodbury Commons

Still have to do some more Chrissy shopping? Check out Woodbury Commons. Just a short ride from Manhattan (you can catch a bus from Port Authority on 42nd street, directions are on the website below),there are over 220 shops to choose from. Make sure to pick up a coupon book when you get there for extra discounts.
