August 11 th , 2017 Dear school community, It has been another busy fortnight, with lots of engaging learning experiences for all. We have had our Prep students celebrating 100 days in Prep, we had a wonderful turn out of families for our World Of Maths evening, an amazing Toy Incursion for our Grade 1/2s who also helped plant trees in the front entry and an entertaining musical performance for the whole school by Alpha Theatre. NAPLAN In the coming week, NAPLAN results for our students will be arriving. If your child is in Grade 3 or 5 this year and sat the NAPLAN tests, they will be bringing home an individual report of their results. There will also be a guide to explain how to read the information and what it all means. It is important that we remember that NAPLAN is a reflection of one moment in a year’s worth of learning that your child experiences at school. It is also important to remember that your child is more than the results of a test they each have their own unique qualities and talents that should be encouraged and praised. Parent opinion survey Earlier this week, many families would have received an email invitation to complete the 2017 Parent Opinion Survey. All schools are directed by DET to utilise the school’s enrolment software to generate a random selection of 30% of our families. If you received such an email invitation, please ensure that you utilise the unique link to access the online survey and follow the directions provided. If you chose to accept the invitation to participate, I thank you in advance and remind you that you have until Sunday 27 th August to do so. In preparing for this, I found that many families do not have current email addresses in our system. If you should change or update any of your contact details at any time, please ensure you notify the office so that records can be updated. Uniform Policy As mentioned in the last Newsletter, the School Council are looking at updating the School Uniform Policy. You can view the changes in the policy attached to the last Newsletter. If you would like to provide feedback, please do so via email to [email protected] by the end of August. 2018 Enrolments Once again, I urge all current families who have children ready to start Grade Prep in 2018, to submit your enrolment forms as soon as possible. Spaces are filling fast and we have a long list of new families waiting for a placement in our school.

Also if you are a family who are leaving us in 2018 (apart from grade 6 students) we would greatly appreciate being notified as early as possible. This information will provide us with the ability to properly plan for our grade structures and staffing requirements for 2018. Centenary Celebrations As you are aware, 2017 is our Centenary Year. In commemorating the official opening of

Coburg West State School on the 29th November 1917, we will be holding a Centenary Day

on Saturday 25th November 2017 between 10am and 4pm. On the day, we will have

memorabilia and photographs on display, official ceremonies and speeches, tours of our

historic building, commemorative items for sale and refreshments available.

We are very keen to gather your stories, memories, copies of photos and items to share as

part of our display. Therefore, if you are a past student of our school and would like to

contribute, please email [email protected] or contact Rita in our office.

I wish you all a great fortnight. Regards, Mark Colagrande Principal

World Of Maths Roadshow

Family Maths Problem Solving Night

As part of an early celebration of Numeracy Week many families enjoyed a night of thinking and fun at the World

of Maths’ Family Problem Solving night on Wednesday the 2nd August. I would like to thank all those who

supported our great night. Students explored a range of problems that encouraged them to think and solve

mathematical problems. It allowed them to extend their minds and enjoy sharing their knowledge with their

parents. Problem solving is an essential part of the Victorian Curriculum. This night was a fun way of challenging

ourselves. Congratulations to Lainey in Prep D who won the $25 Officeworks voucher provided by the World of

Maths. Again I thanks the 18 staff and my wonderful Maths Committee team who supported the night. Also

thankyou to the grade 56 student leaders who showed leadership skills assisting with the tasks. It was great to

see so many parents being positive role models. It is empowering to them and proven that it makes a difference

to their mathematical learning. Here are some photos of the night.

Enjoy! Fiona Currie, Mathematic Co-ordinator.

Call to Support the Building and Library Fund

What is this about?

In 2017, Coburg West Primary School transitioned from the request for a voluntary contribution, to asking for a tax-deductible donation to the Building and Library Fund.

We envisioned this change as a win-win for the community. Parents would receive a tax-deduction not previously available and external grants or donations from supporters of the school would become more readily accessible.

Unfortunately, we have not brought you along on this journey with us. Donations received to date are at historic lows in comparison to past years and this result will have an impact on Coburg West.

Why is it important?

Schools are not funded for the general upkeep of their facilities; your donation is a vital means for us to provide urgent maintenance and upgrades for the benefit of our students. In 2017 we have two very clear priorities; 70% of proceeds will go towards upgrading our boiler system, which is failing to warm our classrooms sufficiently in the winter due to regular breakdowns, whilst also expensive to operate. The remaining 30% will be put towards the needs of our ICT Lab, upgrading learning resources for our students classroom use.

How can you help?

If you have willingly made a voluntary contribution in the past, or are new to the school, and have not yet done so in 2017, we ask you to please consider supporting the fund. Our guideline request is $50 per student, to a maximum $100 per family. Larger amounts will of course not be turned away. Unlike the past, these donations are now fully tax-deductible - June 30 deadline for the 2016/17 financial year.

Thank you for you continued support,

The Building and Library Fund Committee
