Operations at Baltic Container Terminal (BCT) in the Port of Gdynia, Poland, are expected to improve even further with the arrival of two new quay cranes on 29 June.

The new cranes are part of the investment program that was implemented back in 2012.Manufactured by Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries, the new quay cranes effectively augment BCT’s cargo-handling capability

by more than half. Each crane measures 67 meters high and has an arm reach of 52.5 meters just like the first two cranes Gdynka and Gdynek, which were delivered to BCT last December. The cranes are capable of servicing up to 13,000-TEU capacity vessels.

“On the Baltic Sea, we see larger and larger vessels. This month, the largest container ship in the history of Gdynia called here, and there are all indications it will be a frequent visitor. This will require us to increase both the capacity and performance of cargo operations, so as to handle the ever-increasing quantities of containers as quickly as possible,” says Krzysztof Szymborski, BCT CEO and General Manager.

Aside from the four quay cranes, BCT’s investment program also includes the purchase of RMG cranes, container cranes and other cargo-handling equipment; the implementation of new IT systems; and the renovation of the terminal’s container yards.

Shanghai Zhenhua Heavy Industries is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of large-scale container cranes.

BCT services largest ship to call Gdynia port

Baltic Container Terminal (BCT) achieved another

milestone last 5 June as it welcomed the arrival of

MSC Charleston, the largest container vessel to call

the Port of Gdynia.

Built in 2006 by the Korean shipbuilder Hanjin Heavy

Industries & Construction Co. Ltd., the 8,100 TEU-capacity

MSC Charleston has a length and breadth of 324 meters

and 42 meters, respectively. It broke the previous record

set by MSC Krystal, a 5,762 TEU-capacity container vessel,

whose length and breadth measure 277 meters and 40

meters, respectively.

"The visit of such a large container ship is another proof

that, despite market volatility, there is still a demand for

sea-going vessels in Gdynia,” explains Krzysztof Szymborski,

BCT CEO and General Manager.

"We were prepared for it thanks to the investments made

over the years, including, among others, new cranes and

handling equipment. We hope that the construction of a

new turning circle will soon be completed, and that, for the

longer term, the port channels will be also be deepened so

that similar or even larger units will be our regular guests in

Gdynia," he adds.

The MSC Charleston is the largest ship to ever call the Port of Gdynia.

Aside from Mazda, other Japanese carmakers Honda and Mitsubishi also prefer the Bauan port because of its proximity and accessibility to the major car manufacturing hubs in southern Luzon. The Port’s 3.24-hectare car compound is capable of storing up to 2,358 CBUs at one time. BCT’s Open Day attracts thousandsBy Michal Kuzajczyk

More than 3,000 people flocked to Baltic Container Terminal (BCT) in Gdynia, Poland last 13 June for the annual Open Day event, setting a new attendance record for the Company’s yearly celebration.

Held for the third consecutive year, the Open Day gives visitors a glimpse of how BCT conducts its daily operations. Guests were given a tour of the whole port aboard a ship. They were also allowed to observe and learn about vessel and crane operations at close range. Some were even allowed to operate port equipment like mobile cranes, spotter trucks and reach stackers.

Aside from letting people experience what a day’s work inside the terminal feels like, the Open Day event also gave the local community the opportunity to experience Philippine culture. The Philippine Embassy in Poland, headed by Philippine Ambassador Patricia Ann Paez, showcased traditional Philippine dances and offered visitors a taste of original Philippine cuisine.

BCT also prepared activities, for children, who were encouraged to collect stamps in exchange for surprise treats.

The increase in the number of visitors this year is an indication that BCT’s Open Day celebration has become one of summer’s landmark events for the people of Gdynia.
