Principal’s Message

Today, our Year 3 and 5 students commenced their NAPLAN assessments completing

the writing, spelling and punctuation tests. We’ve encouraged the students not to be

anxious about these tests but rather to see them as an opportunity to show how

much they have learnt in the subject areas of English and Maths. There are 2 more

tests to do, Reading tomorrow and Maths on Thursday. Just as it is with school, a

good night sleep and a healthy breakfast will go a long way to helping the students

maintain their concentration and perform at their best over the next two days.

Last week, I indicated that our total school enrolment number had increased and we w This Saturday, our preschool staff assisted by some generous parent and staff

volunteers will be hosting a Bunnings BBQ at the Bunnings-Glendale store (at

Boolaroo). The aim is to raise some additional funds for equipment for the students

currently in the preschool. If you are in the position of needing to visit Bunnings this

Saturday (which tends to be most Saturdays in my house), then you might stop by to

say hello, cheer our team on and maybe even buy a sausage or two. It should be a

great day.

Finally this week, after a long wait and a bye in our first round, our PSSA soccer and

netball teams will have their first opportunity to dive into the new season. So far the

weather forecast for Friday looks promising so let’s hope the students get to play a lot

more games than last season. If you would like to come along and cheer the teams

on, the soccer teams will be playing at Evans Park and the netballers will be just up

the road at Nancy Dwyer netball courts. The junior games start at 1:00pm and the

seniors start at 1:40pm. Good luck to all the students involved.

Welcome to Week 4! You may have noticed in last week’s newsletter a full page

detailing that our school now has the capacity to accept online payments for

school expenses. This means that if you wish to make a payment to school at any

time you are able to do this without sending money in or by needing to visit the

office in person. Payments can be made securely by accessing the ‘$Make a

Payment’ tab on our website using a Visa or MasterCard credit or debit card. You

can also access this facility via the Skoolbag app under ‘Parent Info’ then ‘Make a

Payment’. All you need to remember is to make sure that you enter the student’s

name, class and date of birth when making a payment and don’t forget to print

your receipt as proof of payment as you finish. Also, if you are making a payment

for multiple items at the same time, remember to check the ‘Other’ box towards

the bottom. Please note: it is still important that students return their permission

note to school at least 2 days prior to an activity taking place in order to

participate in an event EVEN if payment was made online. I hope that this new

system will be extremely beneficial, especially for those of you who find it difficult

to make it in to school due to work commitments.

Grip Leadership

Year 6 students were invited to particiapte in the Grip Leadership Conference this Thursday, 19th May. Those

attending are reminded to be at school by 8am, ready for departure at 8.15am. Students will travel by bus and

are asked to bring a small bag with recess, lunch and a water bottle.

The invitation has now been extended to Year 5 students on a first-in, first served basis. Year 5 students

wishing to attend must return their consent form and payment no later than Wednesday afternoon.

P&C Meeting

The next P&C meeting is scheduled for this Wednesday 18th May. The meeting will be in the library as usual at

7pm. New parents and carers are always invited to attend.

Parent Information Evening – Class structures

A reminder to parents and carers that Mr Holland and the Assistant Principals will be leading a short 30 minute

information session in the library next Wednesday 25th May starting at 7pm to explain why as a result of recent

enrolments the school must review its 2016 class structures. Topics covered will include: the Department’s class

size limits, how classes are formed based on enrolments, why it is necessary to make changes to accommodate

a 12th class and how we plan to proceed. This session is designed to help parents and carers understand why we

are in the unusual position of needing to make changes mid-year. We hope that you are able to join us. Please

note: this session is for parents and carers only.

StarStruck Rehearsal

The next StarStruck rehearsal is scheduled for this Wednesday, 18th May at the Basketball Stadium. Students are

reminded to bring a packed recess, lunch and plenty of water. We will be daprarting the school at 9.30am and

will return at approximately 2.30pm

Home Reading Journals Congratulations to all the students who have achieved significant milestones with their home reading journals. 78 students have reached 40 nights of reading and 17 students have reached the second milestone of 80 nights. Fabulous work! Students will receive a merit card for their 40 nights of reading. Students who have read for 80 nights will receive a very special Cardiff South Public School bookmark and a $2 voucher to spend at the canteen! These bookmarks have been designed and made professionally, specifically for this milestone. As a school, we have read 7650 nights. 68% of our students have contributed to this tally. I am looking forward to painting this rise in nights on our thermometer in the library. Keep reading so we can get to our first school goal of 20000 nights! Parents are advised that our books are now open to receive enrolments for students commencing Kindergarten

or Preschool at the start of 2017. Further information and enrolment forms can be obtained from the office at

May is National Family Reading Month!

During May, the library will be open from 3pm till 3.45pm on Tuesday afternoons for

parents, grandparents or carers to bring their child after school and share some reading

time together. Borrowing will also be encouraged. All children will need to be

accompanied by their parent during these extended hours.

Research shows that family reading time is one of the BEST ways to grow a child's interest in the wonderful

world of books.

Walk Safely to School Day

Walk Safely to School Day is on this Friday 20th May. It is an annual, national event when all primary

school children are encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. The community event seeks to

promote Road Safety, Health, Public Transport and the Environment. There are a couple of ways you

can get involved: if you live within walking distance of our school; you could arrange to walk with your

children to school; you could have your children meet with their friends at a designated spot to then

walk to school together; or if you live further away you could park 10 mins from school and then walk

the rest of the way. As you do so, use the opportunity to reinforce safe pedestrian practices like

crossing at safe spots and looking both ways. There’s plenty of time, so come on Cardiff South let’s

make a plan and walk to school this Friday!
