Message to Graduating Students

To reach this moment, each of you had to negotiate the layered challenges that make up

the New College experience - whether in the form of Academic Contracts, the senior thesis

and baccalaureate, personal relationships, or the discovery of your true passion. The very

things that drew you to New College in the first place - such as the freedom to chart your

own educational path - not only look considerably different from this end of the process,

they have significantly changed you.

Now from one standpoint, this is simply called, "growing up." But from the specific

standpoint of the New College experience, your success in reaching this moment signifies a

superior capacity to cope with complexity, to respond constructively to a serious challenge,

and - hardly trivial - to meet a deadline. The element of personal responsibility running

through these achievements is not only impressive in itself, but it should also give you

the self-confidence that your New College education has prepared you well for the utterly

unforeseeable challenges that lie before you.

No single snapshot captures the way you as a graduating class have achieved this success.

Each of yout· journeys has been as individualized as the outfits you wear tonight. One

common theme affecting all of you, however, involves the dedication and professionalism

of your teachers, and the personal attention each of you has received from them. In the

years ahead, you will appreciate the most the teachers who have pushed you the hardest -

and, as alumnae/i, you will be eager to return to campus to impress this lesson on a new

generation of students, as though it has been your own discovery.

We look forward to your frequent return, even as we share with your families the pride

they are feeling at this moment. Congratulations.

Mike Michalson, President

A DISTINGUISHED PAST AND PROMISING FUTIJRE

Founded in 1960. '\Jew College of Florida welcomed its first class of students in 1%4 amid a fanfare of national attention. That charter class. which consisted of a talented and adventurous group of 101 young men and women from around the countty, carne to campus with a thirst for knowledge and a desire to take rart in a different kind of education. Ne'\\r Collegc·s "grand experiment,'' when: undergraduates worked collaboratively with faculty and where students were not only encouraged but expected to participate actively in their own education, was on the cutting edge of higher education 111 the 1960s. It remains so today.

During the past forty years, whether as a private college or as a memher of the State llnivcrsity 'ystcm of Florida. New College students and graduates have distinguished themselves as national leaders in undergraduate research, ac.1dcmic achievement, and community service. This year's gmduating seniors are no exception. With five rulbright Fellows and countless others who have received awards and accolades throughout their careers here, our Class of 200R continues New College's rich tradition of producing outstanding graduates who become informed, involved global c !lizens.

We celebrate this year's graduating class as one that will continue to have a lasting effect on ew College's history and its Future. Thanks in part to the contributions of this year's graduates, Nc\\

College stands out among Its peers across the country, having earned accolades from publications such as l'.S. News & World Report. The Princeton Review Kiplinger's, Barron's Guides, Colleges 111at Change Lives and The Wall Street journal. This year's graduates also played a key role in helping the College shape and develop not only a visionaty campus master p lan but an academic master plan and a strategic p lan for the next ten years. They were the first class to occupy five new green residence halls, all of which will benefn generations of future students at 1'\ew College.

Just as the more than 4.14"1 Ne\\ College graduates who preceded them have. this year's class of graduating seniors promises to make their marks on our nation and the world as accomplished scholars, entrepreneurs. civic leaders, educators, attorneys. physicia ns. artists, journalists and professionals of cvety type. As a college. we welcome them to the noble ranks of ovo Collegian alumni. Congrantlations!
