Congratulations & Welcome to the Award-Winning NCDA Dance Team!

Only Positive Attitudes Welcome

You have been selected as a New Castle Dance Academy team member. As a member of the team, you must attend ALL rehearsals and shows assigned to your group. Your conduct MUST set a good example to inspire others.

The team name signifies the level. All dancers will be mixed together and will be selected for specific dances based on what the teacher feels will benefit and best showcase each team member.

ALL decisions are FINAL and NON-NEGOTIABLE.

-All team members have been selected to do at least 1 dance each. The teacher chooses the number of dances for each individual dancer. The parent chooses the number of dances out of the ones chosen for their child that they feel the dancer can handle.

-All team members MUST be at all the competitions in which they have chosen to participate in for the season-NO EXCEPTIONS. All team members will do between 1-3 regional competitions (a tentative schedule is on page 15). The teacher will select which division the dancers will compete in, whether it is recreational or competitive. This is done in the best interest of the students.

-All team members will incur many extra fees while participating on a dance team. While we try to keep these down as much as we can, some we cannot avoid (fundraising is available). Estimated fees include, but are not limited to:

*Team warm-up suit $141/$149 *Dance class (1) $67

*Competition Fees $40/dance *T-shirt $25

*Garment bag $35 *Make-up $50

*Hair access./jewelry $30+ *Shoes, tights, etc. $75

*Membership Fee (non-refundable) $150/individual or $200/family due at contract signing

(Lots of attention, valuable time and care are spent to accommodate our award-winning and quickly-progressing dance team. The membership fee includes, but is not limited to: e-mails; letters; performances in studio and at events; phone calls; administrative and management work for competitions, workshops and shows; choreography; scheduling; audio; music; costume selection and ordering; make-up preparation; etc.)

*Extra rehearsals $10/child *Seeing your child perform PRICELE$$!!

-Each team level will have a criteria of dance classes that MUST be adhered to, separate from team classes. Individual consultations are available if desired. Team criteria for summer and fall classes is listed on page 3 of this handbook. These classes come first, their team rehearsals are in addition to these classes.

Solo, Duet and Trio GENERAL INFORMATION

There will be two levels of Solos, Duos and Trios during the 2014-15 season. Some routines will be in the Competitive category traveling to Regional Competitions. All other routines will participate in the Showcase. This means the student will experience private attention creating a solo, duo or trio. They

will only perform the dance at the NCDA Team Showcase in June. Costumes for Competition Solos being handled through NCDA will range from $80-$100. Costumes for Showcase Solos will be the responsibility of the dancer’s family. The music and style of dance will be determined by the NCDA

Instructor. The Choreography Fee for a Solo, Duo or Trio will be $320 whether it is a Competition or Showcase Solo. Payment is made in $40 increments before the private lesson. Your dancer will

receive eight 30-minute rehearsals with an instructor assigned by NCDA. These rehearsals will be arranged between the Instructor and the dancer. Once your dancer’s session is complete they can

continue to rehearse with their Instructor at a rate of $75 per hour or $38 per 1/2 hour at the discretion of the Instructor. All of the solos, duets and trios will perform in the NCDA Team Showcase.

(Tuition and other costs must be current and in good standing to perform and practice Solos, Duets and Trios.

Solo, Duet and Trio Audition Criteria

*Must be prepared with music (on a CD or iPod), partner/s (for duet or trio), attire, hair up, and 1 minute dance.

*Private lessons will begin in September.

One excused absence per year is permitted. Example: family vacation, wedding, mandatory school function for grade (not school dances or parties).

The teacher may add or subtract a dancer at anytime, therefore, it will be in the best interest of the dancer to attend all rehearsals.

“Costumes”

This applies only if costumes are being rented. Costumes will have a minimal rental fee, unless they are bought and used from regular or rehearsal classes (the rental fee will come from fundraisers) instead of purchasing them. All team and production costumes are the sole property of the NCDA Dance Team and must be returned when not representing the team.

“Season”

The season begins July 2014 and runs through June 2015.

“Fundraisers”

All parents are encouraged to play a role in fundraising to minimize out of pocket expenses as much as possible. All fundraisers and decisions must be approved by the Director. Fundraisers may include but are not limited to Claire’s Gourmet, Friendly’s Family Night, tagging, Joe Corbi’s, Applebee’s Breakfast and others.

“Competitions”

Fees are due six weeks prior to the competition date. Each competition charges a different fee. There will be a processing/service fee added for each competition. This fee will amount to no more then 10%. . A $5.00 per dance late fee will be added after the due date!! NO EXCEPTIONS

Payments for fees will be made through your PORTAL on our website. Fees will no longer be available at the front desk. Your fees will be posted to your account two months prior to competition. It is your responsibility to make the payment through this method.

The actual schedule times for each competition and dance will be sent to the studio 10 days prior the competition date. As soon as the studio knows, an e-mail will be sent to all team members.

All dancers should arrive at the competition venue two and a half hours before scheduled performance time with hair and make-up done. The teacher will instruct members on hair and make-up prior to first competition. All dancers should arrive in their warm-up suits.

THERE WILL BE A STUDENT CHECK-IN AT EVERY COMPETITION! The check-in will consist of approving hair, make-up and tardiness.

Page 5: New Castle Dance & Music Academynewcastledanceacademy.com/images/documents/NCDA_Dance_Team... · Congratulations & Welcome to the Award-Winning NCDA Dance Team! Only Positive Attitudes

“Traveling”

Each member is responsible for their own travel to and from the competition venue. Most of the competitions are within a 2-3 hour drive. Acquiring a room for overnight stay is at each family’s discretion. There are usually hotels available close by and some of the competitions offer a hotel with discounted room rates. You need to check the website of the competition for this information. One way to reduce the cost for a room is to room with another member.

“Workshops”

We will be attending the following workshops Inferno & Jump (2-3 days) between $95 and $230. See schedule

Warm-Up Suit & Garment Bag Orders are due no later than September 6th, 2014 since it takes a while for the orders to be processed.

Team Fees are due at contract signing. The fees are payable in the form of cash or checks only. Please make checks payable to NCDA Dance Team.

Member & Dance Selection

-Based on years of training/dancing

-Usually begin with 1 dance so that the student has an opportunity to get adjusted to the more demanding schedule.

-Dance is an individual art form and this is considered in assigning a number of dances.

“Attendance” Attendance is extremely important especially when performing. Therefore, missing rehearsals jeopardizes the team as a whole. We encourage team work and good attendance. The rehearsals the week before any competition or performance are extremely mandatory and crucial to a well prepared and professional performance. Please adhere to these rules for fairness and discipline. If they cannot be met, the student will NOT be able to participate. One absence will result in a misdemeanor and the dancer may be pulled from a dance or part and require homework. Two absences will result in probation and same as one absence. Three absences will result in being dismissed from the team.

NCDA Dance Team Code of Conduct

Only Positive Attitudes Welcome!

Introduction and Overview

Congratulations, you have earned the honor of being selected as a New Castle Dance Academy team member. The dance season is long and demanding. During the season, parents, dancers and instructors make significant commitments and sacrifices. To make the season as fun and positive as possible, NCDA requires that each dancer and his/her parents or guardians agree to the following Rules and Code of Conduct. As a member of the team, your conduct MUST set a good example to inspire others.

NCDA vests its instructors with the authority to discipline any dancer whose behavior is judged to be damaging to the dancer, teammates, instructors, or the general public, or to the reputation and integrity of our dance community. Our instructors set team rules that promote the smooth running of our program, with a goal of improving all dancers.

Parents’ Guidelines and Code of Conduct

Parents’ Guidelines

-Do not force your child to be on the dance team, but support his/her desire to dance. It is important to allow him/her to establish his/her own goals. Do not impose your own standards or objectives on your child.

-Encourage your child to adhere to the studio rules. Children learn best by example, so applaud good behavior.

-Do not embarrass your child by yelling at them, other dancers or instructors. Show a positive attitude toward the studio and all of it’s participants. Your child will benefit from this.

-Emphasize developing technique and practicing and the benefits.

-The best way to help a child achieve goals and reduce the natural fear of failure is through positive reinforcement. Applaud good efforts. Highlight the positive points of their performance. If your child does make a mistake and he/she will (remember, we’re all human), keep in mind that mistakes are an important part of the learning process. Strive to be supportive and point out things your child does well. Make your child feel like a winner.

Page 7: New Castle Dance & Music Academynewcastledanceacademy.com/images/documents/NCDA_Dance_Team... · Congratulations & Welcome to the Award-Winning NCDA Dance Team! Only Positive Attitudes

-Don’t yell or physically abuse your child at the studio or at performances, workshops and competitions; it is destructive.

-Communicate with, respect and support your child’s instructors and their decisions and abilities. It is unfair to put a child in a position of having to decide who to listen to, parents or the instructors.

-Know and study the rules of the studio, workshops and competitions. Support instructors and judges. This approach will help develop and support the art of dance. Criticizing the instructors or judges is not productive.

-Keep things in perspective. There is much more to life than dance. DO NOT start drama … There is a no tolerance for this behavior at NCDA.

-Know what class “criteria” is required for your child and make sure that they regularly attend those classes. Attendance is extremely important, especially when performing. Therefore, missing rehearsals jeopardizes the team as a whole. We must encourage team work and good attendance. Mandatory rehearsals before competitions are extremely crucial to a well prepared and professional performance.

-Know and support the consequences for missing rehearsals. One excused absence per year is allowed (example: family vacation; wedding; mandatory school function for a grade. School dances and/or parties are not excused). One absence from rehearsal will result in a misdemeanor and may result in dancer being taken out of a dance or part of a dance. Two absences may result in probation. Three absences may result in dismissal from team.

-Know what your tuition and workshop/competition fees are and pay them on time. This includes the studio tuition. If your tuition is not current, the dancer(s) will not be permitted to compete.

-I/We understand and agree that failure to abide by such may be subject to disciplinary action by NCDA, and that such disciplinary action may include dismissal from the dance team.

Dancer’s Rules and Code of Conduct

Dancer’s Rules

NCDA expects all dance team members to abide by the following rules. In addition dancers need to be aware that instructors have the authority to impose consequences for actions that violate team rules. Consequences may include, but are not limited to, removal from dances or parts of dances, suspensions from the team and/or team activities, and/or dismissal from the team

-Dancers shall refrain from dangerous conduct. NCDA requires that all dancers show concern for safety of their teammates, instructors, staff members and parents at all times. Any behavior that could injure any human being will be considered dangerous.

-Dancers shall refrain from illegal conduct. NCDA will not tolerate dancers’ engaging in illegal activities while participating in or representing NCDA at practices, workshops, competitions and other dance team events. Illegal activities include, but are not limited to, theft, vandalism of property, using illegal drugs, abusing prescription drugs and using alcohol.

-Dancers shall refrain from disruptive conduct. NCDA will not accept behavior that disrupts classes, practices, workshops, competitions or other dance team activities. Page 11: New Castle Dance & Music Academynewcastledanceacademy.com/images/documents/NCDA_Dance_Team... · Congratulations & Welcome to the Award-Winning NCDA Dance Team! Only Positive Attitudes

-Dancers shall refrain from conduct that shows a lack of commitment to the team. NCDA is built on a core belief that no individual is bigger than the team and will not tolerate behavior that reflects disregard for this core belief. Behaviors that suggest a lack of commitment to the team include, but are not limited to, repeated late arrival for classes, rehearsals, workshops and/or competitions, failure to attend practices, rehearsals, workshops and/or competitions and repeated challenges of an instructor’s authority to set rules and ask that those rules be followed and to determine dancer’s dances and dance parts.

Dancer’s Code of Conduct

NCDA has a Code of Conduct that it expects all dancers to follow. In addition to helping make the dance team season more fun, safe and positive, these actions represent fundamental lifetime skills.

-I will be a team player. I will get along with my teammates, parents and instructors.

-I will attend and be on time for classes, rehearsals, workshops and competitions.

-I will respect the NCDA environment and the contents within.

-I will show conduct that will set a good example to inspire others.

I understand that if I break the Dancer’s Rules or Code of Conduct I will be subject to disciplinary action by NCDA.

~Testimonial from a dance team parent:

I am the mother of Jennifer, who was a member of the New Castle Dance Academy Dance Team for ten years. Ten years was a long time, but it was time well spent. Through these years, I watched as my daughter grew in confidence, strength and friendships. Being a member of the dance team allows everyone, including the parents, the opportunity to bond and work as a group. You watch and cheer on all the members. This bond, however, would not be as strong without the guidance of team director, Heather Pate. She helps the members to improve and work to-gether toward the same goal; performing their best. Although there is a commit-ment of time and money for both the parent and the team member, I can honestly say that this commitment has been well worth it for all that we have gained. Just to see the smile on your child’s face when they come off stage after the perfor-mance of their life is priceless. After learning what it takes to be a member of the NCDA Dance Team, we would certainly do it all over again.

~Testimonial from dance team member:

Being on the NCDA team for 11 years has been very rewarding. Not only has it given me a sense of confidence and pride, but I have made so many friendships that will last a lifetime. Spring is my favorite season of all because it’s competition season! It’s the best feeling in the world after you get off the stage, and you know you gave it everything you got and worked for it. I’ve learned that traveling from state to state really does bring my family close together as well. I strongly believe that we are not just a team, we are a family. Yes, we have to dedicate a lot of our time and energy, but the feeling of accomplishment you get when you receive your award exceeds everything. Being on the team has made me realize that dance will always be a part of my life.
