Mt Buller is an ever-evolving destination that each year sees continual improvement projects to better the customer experience. This year sees lift and snowmaking upgrades, as well as a brand new hotel complex and more.

MORE UPGRADES FOR VICTORIA’S LARGEST LIFT NETWORK. Over the past five years Buller Ski Lifts (BSL) has invested nearly 15 million dollars into improving infrastructure on Mt Buller and BSL is committed to ongoing investment to keep its comprehensive network of 22 lifts running all season long. Mt Buller is the only ski resort in Australia to invest in new chairlifts in the past eight years, building three new lifts in this time, including the Bonza Chairlift in 2012. This investment provides continued improvement to a system that can move up to 40,000 skiers and snowboarders every hour.

Mt Buller’s much loved Wombat Chairlift also received an upgrade this season, with $500,000 invested in Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) access control gates, as well as a new drive that will see lifting capacity increased by a further 30% on this popular lift that services the intermediate runs of Little Buller Spur and Wombat.

WORLD CLASS SNOWMAKINGAn additional $400,000 has been invested in Mt Buller’s world class snowmaking fleet this winter, with the completion of automated snowmaking on Little Buller Spur and Chamois thanks to 11 brand new SMI Puma snow guns, as well as extended snowmaking on the Skyline and Baldy areas with eight Polecats permanently relocated to this area. Automated snowmaking improves the quality and efficiency of the Resort’s snowmaking facilities, meaning more snow, more often for our guests.

A BRAND NEW HOTEL IN THE VILLAGEThe end of winter 2012 saw the end of an era for one of Mt Buller’s oldest buildings – the YHA hostel was demolished to make way for a brand new development in the Village Square, which will see an exciting new venue to eat, sleep and play this winter. Called Buller Central, it is right in the heart of the Village Square, and will contain mid-range hotel style accommodation, apartments, restaurant/bar and retail space. Buller Central is currently under construction and will be open for business this winter.

THE MT BULLER FAMILY ALBUM It’s the people that set Mt Buller apart; the variety and depth in their connections with the mountain. That came through loud and clear with the opening of the Australia’s newest chairlift, the Bonza Chairlift, in June 2012, when Mt Buller families were invited to come together and be a part of this landmark event on their mountain. These connections are being acknowledged in a book about Mt Buller’s families, with a working title ‘The Mt Buller Family Album’. It will include families with three generations or more involved with the mountain, or a significant stake in the mountain and its operations. The planned release date for the book is June 2013.

VICTORIAN AND NATIONAL INTERSCHOOLS SNOWSPORTS CHAMPIONSHIPS AT MT BULLERMt Buller is once again thrilled to host the 2013 Subaru Victorian Interschool Snowsports Championships. The largest snowsports event in the Southern Hemisphere, attracting more than 5000 participants, the Subaru Victorian Interschools will run from 18-25 August, continuing a long-standing Mt Buller tradition of hosting since 1957. Mt Buller is also proud to be the home of the Subaru National Interschools Championships in 2013, which will be held from 4-8 September. Come along to see the best school skiers and snowboarders in the country compete for national glory at Mt Buller. TOP OF THE RANGE RENTAL OPTIONS AT BULLER SPORTSFollowing an upgrade to the adult ski rental fleet in 2012, this winter Buller Sports has given the kids’ rentals an overhaul too, with a top of the range system that will help everyone hit the slopes faster. The Head BYS system uses colour coding to fit skis and boots, bringing greater speed and efficiency to the process. Mt Buller remains the only resort in Australia to offer this system, designed to maximise guests’ time on the slopes.

WHEEL CHAIN REQUIREMENTSVisitors to Mt Buller should check the night before their visit whether they will need to carry wheel chains. Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management makes a daily wheel chain announcement after reviewing forecasted weather and road conditions. If conditions are fine and the roads clear of snow and ice, then day visitors are not required to carry chains.

The wheel chain update is posted on the Mt Buller website daily at 5pm and is also noted in the morning snow report shared with accommodation providers, retail outlets and on flashing roadside billboards.

Visitors to Mt Buller and Mt Stirling pay an entry fee as they pass through the gates at Mirimbah. The single payment gives visitors entry to both mountains.

Day visitors are required to pay $38 per vehicle to enter the Resort, while those staying overnight are charged an additional fee – $10 per night during the week and $20 per night on weekends. Season passes are also available.

Monies generated by entry fees maintain essential infrastructure at Mt Buller and Mt Stirling such as roads, water treatment facilities, resort services and regional environmental initiatives.

Mt Buller is committed to preserving the precious alpine environment and maintaining its beauty for generations to come. We support, promote and engage in resource conservation, renewable energy use, recycling, composting and other forms of waste reduction, native fauna and flora habitat preservation and environmental education.

Buller Ski Lifts is proud to be the first Australian ski company to achieve international certification for environmental management. In May 2011, BSL was successfully re-certified for the ISO 14001 standard in Environmental Management, valid until April 2014. We are committed to retaining and improving our NCS International certificateion.

THE LIVING BIN ORGANICS MANAGEMENT SYSTEM – MT BULLER WELCOMES OSCAMt Buller will have a hot new guy at the recycling depot this winter, with the introduction of OSCA – an onsite composting unit that will see the Resort take recycling to new heights via its award-winning Living Bin organics management system.

In 2010, Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management introduced a trial organics management system as part of the Victorian Government’s ‘Towards Zero Waste’ strategy. Run in conjunction with fellow alpine resorts Falls Creek, Hotham and Dinner Plain, waste contractor 4Site Australia and the North East Victoria Regional Waste Management Group (NevRwaste), the system sees on-mountain operators separating out organic waste (fruit, vegetables and even meat) which is collected and recycled into compost at a facility in Wodonga. The introduction of OSCA will help close the loop for food waste management at Mt Buller, with food waste now to be processed at the Mt Buller waste management centre and reused as compost throughout the resort.

The introduction of the organics management system has enabled Mt Buller to increase its total recycling rate to 41%, an increase from 33% in the year prior to the trial and the highest of any other alpine resort in Victoria. This figure also exceeds the target set by the North East Regional Waste Management Plan, which is to recycle 37% of all waste by 2014. Now with OSCA on site and the Living Bin growing in awareness within the Resort, Mt Buller looks set to increase its recycling rate even further.

Australian made and manufactured, OSCA is a 7 x 5 metre fully self-contained vessel. If the trial at Mt Buller proves successful, this technology is likely to be rolled out to other alpine resorts and local governments, helping Victoria get closer to zero waste. MOUNTAIN PYGMY-POSSUM RECOVERY PLANMt Buller is home to a precious population of endangered Mountain Pygmy-possums (Burramys parvus) that are a constant priority for preservation via an award-winning Recovery Plan. In 2005, Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management created a five-year Recovery Plan for the Mountain Pygmy-possum, designed to guide Resort Management, its stakeholders and the Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) in ensuring the long-term survival of the species on Mt Buller. A revised Recovery Plan for the species will provide the blueprint for continued on-ground conservation works and research projects for the next five years and focuses on on-ground habitat restoration works, implementation of a novel translocation strategy and development of captive bred animals for release back into the wild. Annual monitoring, which takes place during the summer season, has resulted in the highest numbers of Mountain Pygmy-possums being recorded in the past 12 years, with the population at a size now that means they are able to return to normal social function and genetic robustness. Guided by the recovery plan, the on-ground habitat works and threat-mitigation strategies have proven successful for these most precious of Buller residents, with successful breeding and genetic rescue taking place via continuation of the trans-location project.

A BROAD RANGE OF ENVIRONMENTAL INITIATIVESMt Buller continues to drive a number of environmental campaigns, encouraging the community and visitors to be actively involved in the conservation of the alpine environment. Initiatives such as Keep Winter Cool carbon reduction campaign, Save the Snow – Just Say No plastic bag minimisation program, Don’t be a Tosser – Bin your Butts free butt bins for smokers, as well as various projects to boost resource efficiency within the Resort. Resort Management encourages visitors to do their bit to minimise their carbon footprint when visiting the Australian Alps:

* Reduce energy used for transport - ride share, car pool or catch a bus to the snow.

* Turn off lights and appliances – save money at home and save the snow on holiday.

* Purchase energy efficient appliances – at home and for your lodge.

* Reduce hot water consumption – install an efficient showerhead, wash clothes in cold water.

* Eco-buy – look for green products for the environment.

* Insulate – your home and your lodge.

* Support renewable energy sources – go solar or switch to green power with your electricity supplier.

* Reduce, Reuse and Recycle – it’s easy on holidays too.

* Plant plants – let your native garden process carbon dioxide.

* Lead change – wherever you are, at home or holidays.

If you’ve never explored Mt Buller or Mt Stirling in summer you’ll be amazed at what you’re missing. Spectacular views combine with clean alpine air and a cool summer climate to provide the perfect setting to relax and recharge, and a range of activities and events are on offer to suit all ages and interests. Mt Buller has also cemented its place as Australia’s premier mountain biking destination, with a comprehensive network of cross-country and downhill mountain biking trails unlike anywhere else in the country.

MOUNTAIN BIKE MECCAMt Buller Mt Stirling has steadily developed its mountain biking product over the past six years under the Bike Buller brand, teaming up with renowned trail designer Glen Jacobs and his team from World Trail to construct a range of quality trails as part of a staged development plan. The Resort has received acclaim from industry, media and government, and in October 2012 was announced as Australia’s first International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) endorsed Ride Center, meaning it joins a select group of mountain biking destinations around the world that represent IMBA’s Model Trail recognition for large-scale mountain bike facilities that offer something for every rider.

Stages one and two of this plan were completed between 2007 and 2009, with new beginner and intermediate trails around the Mt Buller Village and five new loops between the Village and the Corn Hill area.

Stage three saw the completion of Stonefly in January 2011, the Resort’s signature 10km advanced endurance trail that stretches from Howqua Gap to Mt Stirling and back. In December 2011 as part of stage four, the Resort launched Copperhead - brought to you by Specialized, Australia’s very first flow down trail, a unique trail concept that incorporates a flow country style with a downhill edge suitable for both downhill and cross-country bikes and all types of riders. Stage five was partly completed over the summer of 2011-12, and saw the completion of two new linkage trails – Split Rock and Snowgums – which connect the Mt Buller Village with the Skills Park area and Copperhead to the Mt Buller Village respectively. This summer saw the completion of Snowgums, as well as the commencement of stage six including upgrades to the Delatite River Trail and improved drainage works on Copperhead. A seventh stage is also in the pipeline for summer 2013-14.

The most recent and arguably most exciting project to be announced is the construction of a mountain bike trail that is set to become Australia’s first International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) EPIC mountain bike trail. Launched in February 2013, the project involves the construction of a 40.39km trail that will offer visitors to the region a long distance, cross-country descending ride, providing stunning views across the Victorian High Country.

The EPIC Mountain Bike Trail project is a partnership between the Australian Alps National Landscape Committee Inc, Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management and the Australian Government through the T-QUAL Strategic Tourism Investment Grants program, and has received $125,000 in T-QUAL funding, which has been matched by Mt Buller Mt Stirling Resort Management. Construction of the first stage will commence in December 2013, and further news will be posted to mtbuller.com.au as it comes to hand.

ROAD CYCLINGTest your strength and endurance by cycling up the Mt Buller Tourist Road – a 16km stretch from the base of the mountain to the Mt Buller Village. Regular signposts along the roadway measure your progress, telling you how far you’ve climbed in terms of altitude and the distance left until you reach the top. Grab a drink and explore the mountain Village, then enjoy the exhilarating ride back down!

SCENIC CHAIRLIFT RIDESIf you feel like taking in the views from above, jump on a chairlift and take a quick trip to the top for a look at the mountain from a new perspective! Northside Express departs from the day car park at Horse Hill and travels across the Resort’s northern slopes to Spurs Lookout.

4WD ADVENTURESA range of 4WD trails offer a great way to see the neighbouring Mt Stirling and the adjacent Alpine National Park and State Forest. Enjoy the beauty of the rugged High Country with wide expanses of alpine forest, remote properties and the legendary Craig’s Hut featured in iconic Australian movie The Man From Snowy River. The 4WD trails can be tackled independently or with a guided tour.

HIKING AND BUSHWALKINGThere’s no better way to unlock the secrets of the High Country than on your own two feet. Mt Buller and the neighbouring Mt Stirling offer a variety of hiking experiences for all ages and levels of fitness. Free Guided Summit Nature Walks are held each weekend from January to April, where our experienced guides provide knowledge on local flora and fauna and share their experience of working and living on the mountain.

A number of self-guided walks are also available – use of the trails is free of charge and a complimentary walking map is available from visitor information.

HORSE RIDINGHorse riding is an activity that is only available at Mt Stirling, Mt Buller’s neighbour, providing a great way to explore the High Country like the cattlemen of old. Saddle up and roam freely along mountain ridges or through wide-open fields and thick forest gorges. Guided tours with local horsemen can be tailored to suit all ages and abilities, including day trips and overnight treks. Scenic trails leading to Craig’s Hut and the Stirling Summit are always popular, offering great views of the surrounding region.

A WORLD OF ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS FOR ALL AGES AND INTERESTSAs well as the above activities, enjoy Australia’s highest cinema, an indoor rock-climbing wall, tennis on the Bourke Street Ski Run, picnics on the summit, motorcycle adventures, the Gnome Roam and Arts & Artifacts Walks and the National Alpine Museum – the choice is yours!

A JAM-PACKED EVENTS CALENDARMt Buller hosts a range of events for all ages and interests during the summer months. Targa High Country, Bike Buller MTB Festival, Picnic in the Park, Scody High Country Cycle Challenge, Easter Celebrations and the Mountain High Fun Run are just some of the events that are held on Mt Buller once the winter snows have melted and the sun is shining at our beautiful mountain.
