Publishers' Note

THE object of this Booklet is to call atten-tion to the many attractions of New

Brighton as a Seaside and Health Resort - as

an ideal place for a day's outing at the seaside,

and as a desirable locality as a place of permiment residence.

Seaside and other attractions have been givena prominent place in the pages following, for

the reason that it is these features that give NewBrighton its claim to the title "Canterbury's

Playground." It will be found, however, that

the township and district are substantial andprogressive, and present all the elements ofpermanence and prosperity.

It is claimed that this Booklet meets a want

that has been long felt. Many visitors to thecity have been unaware of the fact that at so

short a distance and at the termination of so

pleasant a journey, there are to be found sea

bathing and surfing, sun bathing, and invigorating sea air unrivalled anywhere.

T H E Beach a t New Brighton is often r e ferred to as thefinest in the Southern Hemisphere. If the absence of

shingle-the smoothness and fineness of the sand-the great

length of uninterrupted promenade-the j o y of sun bath

ing in the hot sand, and the safety of the foreshore for

bathers of a ll a g es, make for perfection, then these ad

va n t age s a re certainly present in a superlative degree. The

Beach stretches from the mouth of the Estuary in the South,

t o the mouth of the Waimakariri River in the N orth, a

distance of about ten miles, and is an unbroken stretch of

the purest and finest sand. . Wading is a sheer deli ght, while

the a b se n ce of any foreign substances that may hurt or cut

the feet of the children gives a sense of perfect security

from accident.

As a promenade in the cool of the e v e n in g , the Beach

provides a perfect walk, and its great length g ive s exercise

for the most e n t h u si a s t ic pedestrian. The beauty of the

prospect, particularly should the moon throw its light on

the w ater, must be seen to be a p p r ec ia te d .

An as t o n ish in g firmness is assu m ed b y the sand as

the tide reced es, a n d in this condition the Beach provides a

racing tra ck of the g reatest value for speed trial s fo r motor

cars a n d m oto r-cycles. These races are o f very frequent

occurrence a n d a tt rac t great crowds o f competitors and

spectators. The r aces t ake place in the e xtreme north.

They usually exten d fo !, a considerable distance northward

o f the b oundary of the B oro,ugh, a n d a re not a ll o w ed near

the a r eas used by bathers.

The improvements that have recently t aken place have

a d ded to the enjoyment of those frequenting the Beach, and

as time go e s on there is little doubt that these im p r o ve m e n t s

will be added to until a thorough-going se aside equipment of

attraction . will be at the disposal of the public.

The efforts of the Beautifying Associations and the '

proceeds of several of the Annual Galas have been ex

pended upon Beach Improvements, and under the Borough

Council No. 7 Loan, a " sum was allocated to the same

purpose.

Included in the design fo r permanent beach improve

ments is a raised promenade extending probably along the

whole of the foreshore, th~. material in the present sand

hills being used fOT the purpose. This promenade will

provide a magnificent walk of several miles in length, un

broken, excepting for . the space occupied by the Gardens,

Buildings, etc., at the Pier. . The recently erected Stadium,

a s wel l · a s providing a much-needed a d di t io n to the seat

ing acc_ommodation on th.-e beach, will form the northe~ .

terminus of the southern promenade.

THE POCKET NEW BRIGHTON.CENTRAL AND GENERAL.

NEW BRIGHTON, one of the most important and popularseaside resorts in the Dominion, is situated a little over 5miles from Christchurch-capital city of Canterbury-andis chiefly remarkable for what has been described, as thefinest beach for surfing in the world.

Its easy accessibility to the City of Christchurch, andthe encouragement given to, and provided for holiday-makersand prospective residents, has made for phenomenal progress, the population of the Borough having doubled itselfin 10 years.

The salubrious climate of New Brighton-as evidencedby the health of the school children, and in many otherways-is a sure indication of the purifying properties ofthe sea breezes from Pegasus Bay.

The stimulating and regenerating properties of surfbathing are so well known and appreciated, that during theseason thousands of people of all ages may be seen disporting themselves in the breakers. Mixed bathing isallowed, and is largely indulged in.

Although the beach has been repeatedly and rightlydescribed as the" lungs" and playground of the City, andis admittedly the chief asset of New Brighton, there aremany other attractions which appeal to residents andvisitors alike.

The Pier, opened in 1894, by Lord Glasgow, the thenGovernor of the Dominion, extending for about 700 feetinto the sea, is very largely availed of for promenading, viewing the beach and mountains, and for fishing. On thePier itself there is ample seating accommodation and thereare tearooms, wind shelters and bathing accommodationfor about 400 persons. The frequent heavy seas give thestructure-owing to its great length- a severe buffeting, which it nobly withstands, testifying to the faithful workput into its construction.

The Domains, in various parts of the Borough, areremarkable for their natural and restful beauty. Amongthe magnificently grown trees there is shelter in all weathers. In addition to the commodious Sports Ground in the Central(Rawhiti) Domain, great improvements have been made atthe southern Domain-Pleasant Point. Extensive projectsare in hand for the erection of many permanent attractionsa t this spot.

Picnic parties find in these Domains ideal campinggrounds. A delightful aromatic mat of pine needles formsa grateful resting place. Fresh water may be obtainedfrom permanent wells, and fireplaces are provided for" boiling the billy."

The Power Boat Club, with its fleet of twenty-eightboats, is a very strong body. Its headquarters are on theRiver Avon, which is the western boundary of New Brighton. On Sundays and holidays, large passenger motorboats convey trippers to and from the Jetty at PleasantPoint picnic ground.

Patrons of sport of every kind, namely, Trotting, Bowlin g, Tennis, Cricket, Croquet, Golf, Football, and Hockey, are catered for, visitors to New Brighton being welcome onthe various grounds.

The New Brighton Trotting Club holds four meetingsa n n u a ll y, and is one of the most important trotting clubsin New Zealand.

The health-giving properties of salt water a r e now widely recognised. One of the most important institutions inNew Brighton are the Hydro Hot Salt Water Baths. Atthis institution remarkable cures of rheumatism, sciatica ,neuritis , and kindred diseases have been effected.

New Brighton is a self-contained trading centre, everybusiness having several shops of their kind. Great development is proceeding in the business area. Large and commodiou s premises are being erected in brick in Sea ViewR oa d , w hi le at the North Beach there is also completeshopping service at the d isp osa l of residents.

The telephone service is extensive, most subscribersbeing connected with the Christchurch Central Exchange, just as is the case in the Ci t y itself.

On the lighter s ide, amusement is provided at severaldance h alls, and at a large picture theatre.

Ample accommodation is provided for the visitingpublic, a t the Hotel, Cafe, Brighton House, Ozone Cafe,a n d at many smaller boarding-houses. Comfortable boardbeing obtainable from 30/- upwards.

The day schools, North, Central a n d South, show remarkable development, having doubled their r olls in sevenyea r s .

A g r e a t deal o f evidence is a va ila b le regarding theheal th- giving properties of the Borough, whose permanentpopulation is very largely made up of those who came inthe p ast for a holiday.

It often happened that during that brief holiday period,so much benefit was derived, that the idea of permanentresidence was co n ce ived . -

The fact that New Brighton has a small army of advertisers gleaned from the many who have had relief fromin so m n ia , loss of appetite, a n d like troubles, explains in somedegree its phenomenal progress, and has added to its a t tractiveness from the point o f view of t h e home-seeker orthe investor.

NORTH.NORTH NEW BRIGHTON, possibly better known as.. North Beach," is a part of the Borough of New Brighton, situated about three-quarters of a mile north of the Pier.

While separated from Central New Brighton by theRawhiti Domain, which consists of some 160 acres , it is conn ec t ed with the Centre on the east and west by good roads, and it may be approached by del ightful walks through theDomain.

North Beach was -a barren w aste of sand until the year1911 , when a few enthusiasts induced the r atepayers tosan ction a lo a n o f £5000 for some a tte m p t at r o a d formation.

" Since then the progress of the district has exceeded all exp e cta t ion s. Recently further extensive street and footpathformation has taken place, and asphalt sidewalks, withkerbs and channels, are general. Until about two yearsago North Beach was entirely residential, but so greathas been the progress that there are now about 30 shopsdoing business permanently. Commodious dressing-roomsare available for bathers, and a well-appointed brick privatehotel, known as the Ozone Cafe, provides accommodationfor visitors.

A Public Main School, standing on four acres of thereserve, provides accommodation for nearly 200 scholars.

North Beach has many attractions for visitors andholiday-makers, and has become a well-settled and desirableplace of residence.

SOUTH.THE district lying south of Rodney Street is usually referredto as South New Brighton, and here a very commendablespirit of progress - is evident. The main feature for thevisitor and holiday-maker is the Pleasant Point Domain, which is becoming a most popular site for pic-nic and otherparties. In addition to the well-grown forest of pine andother trees, there is, on the western side, the wide expanseo f water _known as the Estuary.

As the illustrations of Pleasanf Point printed in thisbooklet indicate, there is in tne combination of forest, waterand moun'tain, a most pleasin-g variety of scene, which addsgreatly to the charm of the Domain. In addition, all theadvantages possessed by the- Centre and North in the matterof sea bathing are available. A shopping centre has bee.'.established, and is rapidly extending. A very commodious

- hall has been erected at the corner of Bridge St. and EstuaryRoad, and it forms an excellent rallying place for all theactivities of the district. South New Brighton is destinedto carry a large population; indeed, should the promisedtramway connection with Central Brighton take place, theaccess of population will be only a matter of a very shorttime.

PUBLIC LIBRARY.A MUNICIPALLY-OWNED Circulating Library has beenestablished in the Borough for some years, and is managedby a Committee of Subscribers under the chairmanship ofMr. C. H. Opie. On the shelves are some 2500 volumes, which are constantly being added to. A very moderatesu b sc r ip t ion entitles readers to the benefit of the Library, and this very tangible asset to the Borough equipment islargely availed of. A Reading Room is open daily, andthe current newspapers are filed. The Library is housedin a very substantial building in Nelson Street, a few stepsfrom Sea View Road. The Library is subsidised by theCouncil to the extent of £10 per annum. The fees forSubscribers are: 6/- per annum, 3/6 per half year, 2/6 perquarter, 1/- per month.

THE means of transport f r om the city and suburbs to a

health and seaside r e so r t , such a s New Brighton, has a very

v it a l connection with its progress and development. New

Brighton is f avoured in this respect. Being comparatively

only a short distance f rom the City o f Christchurch, and

connected therewith by excellent roads, the motor car ride

is very popular, but for the general public the tram is, of

course, the chief means of transport.

No. 5 car, taking the shortest and more direct route,

le a v e s the Square during week days two and three times

during the hour, and o n Sundays twice during the hour.

The journey occupies twenty-five minutes.

After a stay is made at the seaside terminus, the return

trip may be undertaken by a route used by No. 10 cars

through North New Brighton, Burwood and R ichmond, and

en route an excellent idea of the extent of the residential

subu r b s in the north-eastern district obtained.

For the convenience of through passengers, Express

Cars are run at certain hours o f the morning a n d evening.

T h is service is much appreciated by regular travellers, the

vast majority being carried from terminus to terminus.

On these cars s p e cia l destination signs are exhibited, and

these should be carefully noted by those who do not desire

to make the through tri p.

On holidays a n d special occasions a suitable time-table

is a r r a n g e d , and vast crowds a re conveyed by trams le av

The tram service is an excellent one. The cars are

roomy, and overcrowding rare. On account of the level

nature of the country each electric car is capable of hauling

a train o f two additional cars. The trains, in groups of

three cars, provide seating accommodation to a degree not

possible in other centres where the single car is in use.

NORTH BEACH.

CENTRAL.r -- ~

,N E W BRIGHTON possesses two very efficient Life-SavingClubs. The New Brighton Club operates in Central NewBrighton. It wac founded in 1910 with a modest membership of 20. The primary object of the club is to teach andto practice life-saving. While there are no dangerous currents running along the Beach, it happens occasionally that'a bather becomes exhausted and in need of help. I TheSurf 'C lub s provide this help in a manner best cal~ulated,by training and experience, to ensure success.

The present membership is 420. The Club undertakesa patrol of the foreshore on Sundays and holidays, assisting the 'B o r o u gh Council in controlling conduct on theBeach. Teams from Central Brighton have won the Dominion Life-Saving Championship for the past two years.

The Club has a very commodious pavilion in which ishoused all the plant and equipment necessary for life-savingoperations. Spacious club and social rooms are provided,'a n d all the elements of a successful and efficient organisationare present in a marked degree.

AT the North Beach an organisation similar to the Centreis in active operation. The membership totals the ve 'rygratifying n~mber of 300, and the members of the Clubspare no effort in giving the time and undertaking the training necessary for full efficiency. The members of theNorth Beach. Club has been successful in many competitions, and bathers may depend upon ready and skilful help shouldsuch be needed. Here, too, is a commodious pavilionerected by the efforts of members.

These Clubs are deserving of the unstinted praise accorded them. A more self-sacrificing and helpful body ofworkers does not exist, and New Brighton-both Centraland North, as well as the general public-is under considerable obligation to them.

ARTESIAN WATER SUPPLY.

The followin g is a most interestin g table showing

n ature of the ground passed through when sinking this well :

A RATHER remarkable artesian water supply for the

Borough is found in several strata by sinking wells to va s-i

ous depths. What is known as the " shallow well" is reach

e d a t a depth of a bout 70 feet a nd provid es a fa ir supply .

This strata is affected by the t ide, and do es not give the

satisfaction of the deeper wells. From 300 to 500 fee t

i. a s t r a ta of water unequalled in the w or ld. An a b u ndance

o f the purest water is discharged fro m a pipe driven

between the depths stated, and under fa vourable circum

stances will rise above ground to a height of 16 feet. This

water supply is one of the d istinct advanta ges possessed by

New Brighton, and in its copiousness and in the apparently

never-fail ing nature of its /low, is an asset of the greatestva lue.

The deepest we ll in the Borough is o ne situated in

Tonks Street, North New Brighton; total depth 508 feet .

Quitea par t from the Military training, a good deal of time, it is understood, is devoted to Physical Training, while the·national games of Football and Cricket receive their dueshare of attention, and the Cadet is also, during the periodo f his four years' training, taught how best to become a~ood citizen.

The Company, together with its Drum a n d Bugle B and( 16 ) , parade weekly in the Drill Shed, situated in the 'Rawhiti Domain.

The motto adopted by the Company is " O n parade,on parade-off parade, off parade," which, for the benefitof the lay mind, may be interpreted as "Work when youwork, and play when you play."

During the Great War, 34 Members of the Companyj o ine d the N.Z.E.F. and saw service o ve r sea s , and some" W e n t West."

BOY SCOUTS.The training of the Boys and Youths of the Borough is ,

f u r t he r attended in the very efficient corps of Boy Scouts, now divided into three Troops, and attached to the Anglican"Methodist 'a n d Presbyterian Churches.

After being in sole charge for many years, Mr. G. W.Bishop still acts as Chief Scoutmaster, giving instructionto the Boys on Saturday mornings. This new arrangement'sh o u ld mean increased members and efficiency, and shouldalso encou.rage friendly competition between the Troops.
