At New Brighton Catholic School we are reverent. Reverence is behaving with an awareness that you are always in the presence of God and that all life is precious. Reverence at NBC can be experienced in our moments of prayer, in our time at Church or in times of reflection. It is also treating our holy books and other sacred things as very special. Kea Crossing I’m sure you agree that our psychedelic coloured crossing is very well marked. Next week Constable Matt will train our wardens in the use of the stop signs; after which you will see the lollipops being used. This will make crossing quicker as wardens will be able to stop the traffic for you to cross which is great as we have all of Brighton’s traffic diverted down Lonsdale Street at present. So please be patient. P1 Zone system: Name on passenger’s visor Indicate when leaving P1 No U-turn out of P1 ____________________________________________________________________ A Note from Ayla Hi, my name is Ayla and I have started school in Rm 5 with Mrs Kingi-Booth and my teacher aide, Sarah. Mum and Dad (Erin & Nick) thought it might be helpful for parents and children at NBC to learn a little about me. I have a condition called Congenital Myopathy which means when I was born my muscles were very weak, this is why I can’t walk. Please feel free to come and talk to us and ask any questions. I am very vulnerable to chest infections, meaning that if I catch a simple cold, flu or tummy bug, I may need to stay in hospital. It’s important that I stay away as much as possible from people who are not feeling well so I don’t catch anything. I’ll love to join in at meal times though, unlike my classmates, I have a feeding tube in my stomach to help me get all the good vitamins and nutrients I miss out on from not eating. So if you see me around the playground, please come and say hi. I really enjoy being at NBC and have loved making new friends. Ayla Black (Rm 5) and Nick & Erin ____________________________________________________________________ Keeping Our Brains Ready to Learn Nutrition is very important to keep your child’s sugar levels even to maximise concentration and learning. Sugar spikes cause crashes, lythargy and lack of concentration. Hints Brain food: think raw and protein. Morning tea: protein and carbohydrates and fruit Please leave the treats for afternoon tea – something for your child to look forward to after school. Treats: packets of chippies and twisties, nut bars, etc. It is disheartening to see children eat junk food at break times, knowing that their maths and reading learning is going to take place after they have eaten these and will be hindered. ____________________________________________________________________ Goinghometodaytoreturningfamilies–completeandreturntotheOfficebyTuesday, please• Student Information and Consent Form (each family) • Hauora Survey (each family) • Introducing Your Child (each pupil) • Give Us 5 (each family) • HPV Vaccination Programme consent – Yr 8 girls only ___________________________________________________________________

Forms to Complete and Return Attached to the newsletter are a number of forms for you to complete over the long weekend and return to school on Tuesday. It is imperative that we have up-to-date information. Families new to NBC this week do not need to complete these forms again. Student/s Information Sheet: Please ensure the people you nominate for Alternative Contact (who we would ring if your child is sick and we couldn’t reach you) and Authorised Person know that you have put their names down. Authorised Person: NBC staff will always stay with your children in an emergency. Please think carefully when extending this authority to another person, eg where will your child be taken in Christchurch, as roads and cell phones may not work. ____________________________________________________________________ Don’t forget that if you have any queries or concerns you are always most welcome to contact me in confidence. 2016 Learning Respect

One of our NBC Footsteps virtues is Respect. After reflecting on 2015, we are going to focus highly on this. Over the next six weeks I will expand on the mantras that you will see and hear at NBC: Manners show Respect Actions leave Footprints Respect the Speaker Walk in Others’ Shoes

See it, Respect it, Home it Actions leave Footprints This is our overall inquiry for the year. We have four enduring understandings (four main ideas) that we want our students to understand and apply by the end of the year. They will use different avenues to explore the understandings, ie social studies, science, religious education, health and PE. Term 1 Enduring Understandings: My choices make a footprint on both myself and others. Jesus left footprints to follow. Term 2 Enduring Understandings: All our choices make a footprint on our environment. God’s footprint is our world. Term 3 Enduring Understandings: Technology leaves a footprint on our world. Missionaries’ footprints helped shape communities. Term 4: Enduring understandings: Chemical reactions create a new footprint. The Holy Spirit creates a positive footprint.
