FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVEI am so honoured to work with a team that is dedicated to providing hope to people affected by cancer. Our team of professional health workers are in eight locations across the region, helping us to provide support and care to any person when they need us.

Looking towards a future where numbers of cancer diagnoses will increase poses a real challenge for us as we continue to advocate for system-level change.

We continued our work to create a future with less cancer, by focusing on healthier environments. The new Fresh Air Pilot brought together local councils and businesses to promote Smokefree outdoor dining, and was successful, with all the businesses involved choosing to remain Smokefree.

We were proud of our shared work with other Cancer Society divisions in shaping public policy, most notably this year around banning smoking in cars with kids and the National Travel Assistance Review. The Cancer at a Crossroads Conference in February, held in partnership between the Cancer Society and University of Otago, helped shift the national conversation about cancer.

With no direct government funding, our ability to undertake these activities depends on the incredible support we receive from our communities, donors, sponsors, volunteers and staff.

On behalf of the Cancer Society of Otago and Southland, I would like to express sincere thanks to all of those who have made our work possible.

FROM THE CHAIRIn the 2019 financial year, we recorded a surplus of $100,129. This strong result has been made possible by the generosity of the people of Otago and Southland. Our major sponsor ANZ continued its support this year, particularly around Daffodil Day.

We were excited to introduce two new Relay For Life events in Wanaka and Queenstown and see the return of our student Relay For Life at the University of Otago. We were also particularly proud of our CanShop in Frankton, which has gone from strength to strength because of the dedication of our incredible volunteers.

I acknowledge the members of our Board and Audit, Risk and Investment Committee for the wisdom, time, dedication they have given to the Society this year. I would like to give special mention to Ken Bowie, June Porter-Mills and Rob McGee who are all retiring from the Board after many years of involvement with the Society and wish them all the best.

This report provides a summary of what this funding has enabled us to deliver this year. However, these figures only skim the surface: behind each one is a real person whose life has been affected by the work of the Cancer Society. For this, I extend my deepest thanks to the staff and volunteers that undertake our work in the community.
