entire Three Gorges Dam project. This view site offers a panoramic view of the world's largest engineering endeavour. Construction of the Three Gorges Dam (the Chinese name is

Sanxia Dam) was planned in three phases over a period of 17

years, between 1992 and 2009, at a total cost of 90 billion

Yuan (the value of which is almost 15 billion USD.) At the height

of construction activity the project involved 27,000 labourers,

working 24 hours a day. This colossal project has involved the

construction of a 2km-long, 185m-high dam wall, incorporating

powerhouses and ship locks. The four main objectives of the

project are electricity generation; flood control; enhanced
