Welcome to the New Alexandra Theatre’s latest season
brochure. Those of you who’ve visited the Alex in recent months
will have noticed our facelift and the addition of the ‘New’ into
our official title. The rebrand marks the recent change of
management at the Alex and heralds the dawning of a new age
for Birmingham’s much loved Alexandra Theatre. Our ambition
is to present more high profile touring productions and we’re
delighted to announce a wide selection of these this season.
Our top pick is an exclusive transfer direct from the National
Theatre; Nicholas Hytner directs Richard Bean’s adaptation of
Goldoni’s The Servant of Two Masters, newly titled One Man,
Two Guvnors, which will see James Corden return to the
stage for the first time since The History Boys.
Following his sell-out show last year we’re thrilled to have
psychological illusionist Derren Brown back with us for two
weeks in May, though tickets are already selling fast so be sure
to book soon for the most mesmerizing show in town. We’re
also delighted to be welcoming the Birmingham REP who bring
The Wiz, a Motown twist on the family classic The Wizard of Oz,
to our stage in June and Birmingham Stage Company visit
with both Horrible Histories and The Jungle Book.
And finally, Grease is the word for our 2011 Christmas show,
featuring all the unforgettable songs from the movie, the
number one greatest musical returns to the Alex for
four weeks only.
If you would like more information on any of our shows please
visit www.newalexandratheatre.co.uk and sign up to our online
mailing list or you can join our Facebook page or follow us on
Twitter, where you’ll be the first to get all our latest updates.
If you have any comments or feedback please let me know
[email protected] and I look forward to
welcoming you to the theatre in the very near future.

NEW ALEXANDRA THEATRE SUMMER 2011 ALL NEW FOR 2011!
Dubbed a ‘psychological illusionist’ by the press, Derren Brown
is a performer who combines magic, suggestion, psychology,
misdirection and showmanship in order to seemingly predict
and control human behaviour, as well as performing
mind-bending feats of mentalism.
For the past ten years Derren has created TV and stage
performances that have stunned audiences, debunked the
paranormal and encouraged many to improve and enhance their
own mental abilities. His first show appeared in 2000, Derren Brown:
Mind Control, followed with Trick of the Mind, Trick or Treat and a
series of Specials including the controversial Russian Roulette
and the hugely popular Events.
Following his sell-out performances in May 2010 we’re delighted to
announce that Derren will be making a return to the New Alexandra
Theatre in 2011 with his new production Derren Brown: Svengali.
This is sure to be one of the hottest tickets in town,

The New Alexandra Theatre is delighted to present our
annual Stage Experience production returning for its ninth
year with the classic musical, Bugsy Malone. Loved the world over,
Bugsy Malone is a high impact, action packed musical set in New
York, 1929. A war rages between two rival gangsters, Fat Sam and
Dandy Dan; Dandy Dan has the new and dreaded ‘splurge gun’
out-manoeuvring Fat Sam at every opportunity. Fat Sam’s only hope
is Bugsy Malone, a charismatic part-time gangster. Despite his charm
Bugsy fails to impress Blousey Brown, who sights are set on being
a Hollywood actress. With twists, turns, gangsters, showgirls
and splurge fights galore the plot unfolds leading to a final
fantastic showdown at Fat Sam’s Grand Slam!
Stage Experience is an intensive two week project that gives
young people across the West Midlands the chance to train and
perform in a professional theatre, under the guidance of a director,
choreographer, musical director or behind the scenes with our
technical team. Stage Experience brings out the absolute
best in our region’s young performers in a production of

BY RICHARD BEAN based on The Servant of Two Masters by Carlo Goldoni
Direct from the National Theatre, James Corden plays Francis
in this new English version of the classic Italian comedy –
where sex, food and money are high on the agenda.
Fired from his skiffle band, Francis Henshall becomes minder
to Roscoe Crabbe, a small time East End hood, now in Brighton to
collect £6,000 from his fiancée’s dad. But Roscoe is really his sister
Rachel posing as her own dead brother, who’s been killed
by her boyfriend Stanley Stubbers.
Holed up at The Cricketers’ Arms, the permanently
ravenous Francis spots the chance of an extra meal ticket and
takes a second job with one Stanley Stubbers, who is hiding from
the police and waiting to be re-united with Rachel.
To prevent discovery, Francis must keep his two
guvnors apart. Simple.
Following his success with Gavin and Stacey, James Corden
is reunited with National Theatre Director Nicholas Hytner for
the first time since the worldwide hit The History Boys.

Featuring the internationally acclaimed
Ukrainian National Opera of Kharkiv.
With handpicked soloists, highly-praised
chorus and full orchestra.
Back by overwhelming public demand, this
award winning Opera returns with exquisite
sets including a spectacular Japanese
garden and fabulous costumes including
antique wedding kimonos from Japan.
One of the world’s most popular operas,
Puccini’s Madama Butterfly tells the
heart-breaking story of the beautiful young
Japanese girl who falls in love with an
American naval lieutenant – with dramatic
results. Highlights include the melodic
Humming Chorus, the moving aria One Fine
Day and the unforgettable Love Duet.
This production will be sung in Italian with English surtitles.

TUE 22 - SAT 26 NOV
Tue - Sat 7.30pm, Sat 2.30pm G L C
Following the huge success of their
production of Jesus Christ Superstar
last year, WBOS are extremely proud
to present The Producers. Outrageous,
hilarious, and a teeny bit controversial;
The Producers is the smash hit musical
comedy that has taken Broadway and the
West End by storm. Winner of a record 12
Tony Awards, it follows the story of
washed-up producer Max Bialystock, and
timid accountant Leo Bloom as they plot to
get rich quick, in the biggest show business
scam ever. With a line up of sexy storm
trooper showgirls and a chorus of wanton
old ladies it certainly will be Springtime
for Hitler in Birmingham this November! This amateur production is given by arrangement with
Josef Weinberger Ltd on behalf of Music Theatre
International of New York
