ELEKTROJAZZnew york tribute

An Eclectic Mix of Soul and R&B, Instrumental Groove Jazz, Spoken Word and Beat-boxing.

ELEKTROJAZZ is founded by swedish trombone player Anders Larson, who has been living in Copenhagen, Denmark for many years.

With an urge to try a new musical direction, band leader and composer Anders Larson has stepped out of the world of modern acoustic jazz, and created his own universe of funky groove jazz, soul, R&B, and acid jazz. A new “old sound” in jazz!

Elektrojazz’ goal is to produce the genuine feel and sound of a seventies recording with a modern flavour, using both vintage instruments and recording equipment and up to date computer software for editing/mixing.

New York Tribute

Elektrojazz love New York. And love music. That’s why the band decided to make a musical tribute to NYC. In 2016, Elektrojazz gathered in New York. Co-writing sessions with talented NYC artists in the band’s home-away-from-home Harlem flat led to an intense studio session in Brooklyn. All the lyrics on the album are related to New York, and they have tried to capture the pulse, feel and smell of the city in their music. The band went around Manhattan to do on-location recordings of street musicians, people and places, and added that special Elektrojazz flavour on top. They even had a subway train doubling as a horn section. Quite musical, it turns out, those MTA cars! We are proud to present the result. “New York Tribute” is a mix of soul and R&B, instrumental groove jazz, spoken word and beat-boxing.

“New York Tribute” is the sequel to Elektrojazz’ debut album “Cars” (2014), which was dedicated to the greatest cars of the 70s, and received very good reviews.

ELEKTROJAZZnew york tribute

1. Shinefeat. Michael Stephenson

This is our attempt to make a hit song. That is why it’s 6 minutes long, and features both a trombone and a keyboard solo. Michael blew us away with his vocals on this track. He is an amazing artist, and we are lucky to get him onboard, before he becomes an international star with an ego with the size of Bedford-Stuyvesant. The song is the starting point of our Manhattan journey.

2. East Village Blues

This instrumental blues is conceived with East Village on mind. Quirky grooves in 6/4 and 5/4 supports the trombone melody. Ideally consumed in Tompkins Square Park, or on the way to one of the obscure little shops in the area, who are struggling to afford to pay rent, while being a vital part of the New York and East Village dna.

3. Imaginary Lovefeat. Michael Stephenson

A love song to a lover? Or New York? Or both? You decide. The song is placed in the jazz club dense area of Manhattan, Greenwich Village. Once again, Michael sprinkled his magic all over the track.

4. City of Lightsfeat. Michael Stephenson

The song is about an artist struggling to get to the top in the city. Michael also shows his amazing skills as a saxophone player, in a lethal duel with a heavily filtered wha wha trombone. The title ‘City Of Lights’, immediately makes one think of Times Square, but we choose to place it at Union Square, a nicer place to hang out at. And, unlike Times Square, Union Square is actually a square...

5. Subway Songfeat. Gonzalo Silva

We ran into Gonzalo on the platform on Penn Station. He was perform-ing this song, singing and accompanying himself on headless electric bass. The song is recorded with one mic in front of Gonzalo’s amp on the platform, with trains coming and going in the background. Afterwards, we added the Elektrojazz flavour on top. The discreet horn stabs at 1:05 and 1:23, is an actual train horn. The fact that this MTA train hit the same rhythm in the same spot twice in the recording, must be an indication that New York approves our project. Or a divine coincidence. You decide. At 4:42, the train spiced the recording up with it’s (among New Yorkers) world famous engine startup-melody.

6. Midtown Marchfeat. Cary Goldberg

Cary is a struggling spoken word artist, a true New Yorker, and a lover of everything jazz and baseball. His lyrics about a walk around 42nd street dig into the social and cultural differences in the city. His voice is recorded on location in the basement of Intercontinental Hotel on Times Square. The song ‘Midtown March’ seamlessly transforms into the next stop on our tracklist, ‘Midtown Madness’.

7. Midtown Madness

Based on only three chords, this studio jam exposes the rhythm section of Elektrojazz. It is our sonic picture of the crowded streets in midtown, with sidewalks overpopulated with important people wearing important suits, thinking important thoughts while walking in important directions, or trying to stop one of the three million occupied cabs driving by. In the middle of this midtown madness, Elektrojazz is standing on the sidewalk, absorbing the chaos, observing the stressed out businessmen and the smooth facades of the neverending steel and glass skyscrapers. No wonder the song ends up disintegrating.

8. Find a Wayfeat. Michael Stephenson

This song starts out as an urgent big city groove, with all the ups and downs of the never ending New York lifestyle. Towards the end, it transforms into a happy-go-lucky groove, giving the song a happy ending. The location on the Shuman Running Track allows the listener (you!) to choose between struggling around the Central Park treadmill, or just sit down on the lawn, enjoying the big green oasis in the middle of the city.

9. Wait a Whilefeat. Mr. Reed

We were lucky to get hold of Mr. Reed, a world touring drummer/singer and street performer. After a co-writing session in our Harlem flat, Mr. Reed was officially on board. This resulted in the song ‘Wait a While’. He gives his view of New York and Brooklyn, showcasing his vocal talents, spanning from the subtle to wonderful over the top-wailing.

10. Harlem Jamfeat. JFlo

We performed a successful voluntary citizen’s arrest of the amazing beat- boxer JFlo. Bail was set at delivering a two minute free form improvised beat-box beat. JFlo paid the bail, and we captured him doing his freestyle in our home-away-from-home Harlem staircase. We added a few pounds of Elektrojazz on top, giving JFlo’s track the right amount of gangster feel. Best consumed doing some late night cruising through Harlem in a blacked out Chevy Impala with 22” chrome wheels.

11. Shine (Radio Edit)feat. Michael Stephenson

Does removing trombone and rhodes solo from our self proclaimed hit song make it more of a hit? By no means, but it sure makes it shorter. Does this mean more airplay? Probably not, but making a radio edit of the song felt like an adult decision at the time.

12. City of Lights (Radio Edit)feat. Michael Stephenson

Not sure if this version makes the tune any more radio friendly, but if everything else fail, at least we made you listen to the song twice, while enjoying (we hope) this album.
