along with Kidd’s spiritual autobiography, The Dance of the Dissident

Daughter. Please RSVP to Carlotta at [email protected].

“In simple terms, the book is the fictionalized history of the Grimké sisters, Sarah and

Angelina (Nina), who were at the forefront of the abolitionist and women's rights movements, wound around the intriguing narrative of a young slave, Hetty, who was given to Sarah as an 11th birthday present. Sarah despises slavery, even at that early

age, and out of principle attempts to reject the gift.” -- Bobbi Dumas review

April Lit Group will be hosted by Jane Bruckner on Monday, April 11 at 7:30 pm. Tina Caliga will review the book The Invention of Nature: Alexander von

Humboldt's New World, by Andrea Wulf. Please RSVP to [email protected] .

“The acclaimed author of Founding Gardeners reveals the forgotten life of Alexander von Humboldt, the visionary German naturalist whose ideas changed the way we see the natural world—and in the process created modern

environmentalism.” – Amazon.com

THE NEWS FROM AAUW TEXAS

COALITION OF PUBLIC SCHOOLS

AAUW Texas has joined the Coalition for Public Schools. Tarrant County Branch members Barbara Cager, Dawn Ellison, Orlew Lauger and Peggy Hendon attended the February 16 luncheon at Amon Carter Center at Lena Pope Home where the guest speaker was Rep. Jimmie Don Aycock, Chairman for

the House Public Education Committee. Community attendees were challenged to get involved, care and support the public schools in our community, because this would aid in improving student success.

The Coalition for Public Schools stands strong in efforts to ensure that ALL 5.2 million Texas children

receive the opportunity for a quality, public education. They were founded in 1995 and are comprised of religious, child advocacy and education organizations representing more than 3,000,000 Texans

statewide. The Coalition opposes the expenditure of public funds to support private and religious schools through mechanisms such as tuition vouchers, tax credits and other types of vouchers. The Coalition supports school choice options within Texas public schools, including approaches such as magnet

schools, open-enrollment campuses, and public school transfers. They believe vouchers are a political distraction from the state’s top priority: providing high quality neighborhood public schools that meet the educational needs of every Texas child. Their website is located at www.coalitionforpublicschools.org

THE NEWS FROM ASSOCIATION

New Research Report -- March 30 Launch Event with Cokie Roberts

Women have been leaders throughout history, and today the tradition of volunteer female leadership continues to flourish. Yet in terms of paid leadership, women’s elevation to top positions is relatively

rare. Why do men still vastly outnumber women in these positions? AAUW’s newest research report, Barriers and Bias: The Status of Women in Leadership, explores

this question, drawing from scholarly research and paying special attention to stereotypes and biases. The report provides recommendations for individuals and those in the education, corporate, and political sectors to contribute to an environment in which gender is no longer a barrier to leadership.

Be the first to see this new report:

1. Register here to watch the Barriers and Bias launch panel webcast .

2. Sign up here to get the report first thing on March 30 plus you’ll be the first to get

access to charts from the report, fact sheets, and more.

Think you are not biased against women leaders? Take the test: http://www.aauw.org/article/implicit-
