When you walk into the Willoughby showroom, you’ll know why I say ‘The hero is here”. After an unprecedented amount of hype from Porsche and the press, the Panamera has finally graced us with its presence. PCW welcomed the new model with a small event late in February.

Posing elegantly in their own carpeted area, our Jet Black Panamera Turbo and GT Silver Panamera 4S command a space of their own not only on the road but also on the showroom floor. It is no surprise when clients seem involuntarily drawn to the pair the minute they enter the showroom: that is how stunning and unique these vehicles are! We look forward to introducing you to this flagship model that encompasses a plethora of new technologies, paving the path for future models.

In February I had the pleasure of attending my eleventh Porsche Winter Driving Experience in Finland. Every year a group of adventurous PCW clients join me above the Arctic Circle to drift 911s through the snow. It is unlike anything else you can

experience in a Porsche, with temperatures below freezing and atmosphere beyond boiling point. Expressions of interest for the 2018 expedition are now open. Please register your interest early for this bucket list event.

Porsche announced the new 911 GTS last month and for the first time a 911 Targa 4 GTS: clearly distinguished by its black roll bar – the first we have seen on a Targa. The performance of the car is expected to feel much different to its predecessor and siblings, with Porsche designing new turbochargers for the special model. We expect to take delivery of our first models in May and look forward to sharing this with you.

Following this, we are thrilled to advise the next generation of the 991 GT3 is set to start production in September. Any news with ‘GT’ in the title is always well received but the level of interest garnered by this model is unprecedented. This is due in particular to the addition of a previously unavailable manual transmission option.

You may have seen the email I sent last month, inviting you to celebrate your Porsche ownership with us in 2017. The Hunter Valley Escape is the ideal place to start. A spirited country drive to Keith Tulloch Wine, where a beautiful banquet lunch and the best wines in the region await. This was our most popular event for 2015 and 2016 and I do encourage you to join us. This, and other upcoming events are detailed in our calendar later in this issue. Our Marketing Manager, Courtney McColgan, has created something for every Porsche owner. You can learn more about her (and why she is always planning track days!) in our staff profile.

ew models earn the designation of ‘GTS’. Although a Porsche, a GTS has different genes to its siblings. A GTS stands apart from those around it. Whether you read the badge on the back, or simply look at it, it is obvious from the outset that this particular vehicle is a special one indeed.

There are the usual hints – a wider body, black elements throughout, central locking nuts on the wheels, a touch of Alcantara and most notably for the driver, more power. This unique combination raises the GTS to sit between the 911 Carrera S, and the more track focused 911 GT3. The GTS is soft where it needs to be, and hard where it needs to be. Some may say it is the ultimate 911 to have, and we can’t wait to get it on the showroom floor.

The new 911 GTS features the 3.0-litre twin turbo flat-six we have become accustomed to, but with a distinctive difference. The addition of a newly developed turbocharger increases power to 331 kW, which translates to 22 kW more than the 911 Carrera S and 15 kW more than the previous generation GTS model with its naturally aspirated engine. Maximum torque of 550 Nm is 50 Nm above the Carrera S and provides even better acceleration and elasticity.

Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) is included as standard on all GTS models. The GTS Coupés feature the PASM sports chassis, which lowers the body by 10 millimetres. The fastest sprinter in the family is the 911 Carrera 4 GTS Coupé: with standard Sport Chrono Package and optional PDK it races from zero to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds.

  • 911 CARRERA GTS COUPÉ 911 CARRERA GTS CABRIOLET 911 CARRERA 4 GTS COUPÉ911 CARRERA 4 GTS CABRIOLET 911 TARGA

The GTS models stand out within the 911 family not only in terms of technology, but also in their visual design: all of the cars are based on the wide all-wheel-drive body on the rear-wheel-drive models.

The new Sport Design front apron emphasises the sporty character of the car. It is aerodynamically optimised with a low front spoiler. Additionally in the rear, increased rear spoiler extension height further reduces lift forces on the front and rear axle compared to the Carrera S models.

From the rear the GTS is unmistakable: smoked tail lights, silk-gloss black air intake grille and central black twin tailpipes of the sports exhaust system, which is included as standard. A new black trim strip between the tail lights characterises the rear-wheel-drive models. The light strip is reserved for the all-wheel-drive models. Sport Design exterior mirrors, 20-inch wheels with central locking nut painted in silk-gloss black, plus GTS logos on the doors complete the side view.

TThe characteristic Targa bar, which is supplied in black for the first time on the GTS, also lends the 911 Targa a particularly distinctive look.

GTS genes also shape the interior. The stopwatch of the Sport Chrono Package is integrated as a central component of the dashboard. The Porsche Track Precision app has been further enhanced specially to coincide with the market launch of the GTS models. Its features include automatic recording, detailed display and analysis of driving data on a smartphone.

GTS occupants sit in Alcantara seats with a new stitching pattern. The Sports seats Plus with GTS logos on the headrests can be adjusted in four ways electrically and provide increased lateral support and comfort. Other features include brushed, black anodised aluminium trim strips on the instrument cluster as well as a high proportion of Alcantara, which can be found on the steering wheel rim, centre console and armrests, for example.

PCW are thrilled to welcome the 911 GTS. We are currently taking orders for this unique vehicle and expect our first deliveries from May 2017. To register your interest or to find out more, please contact our sales department on 02 8966 6900 or email [email protected]

Some may say it satisfies Ferry Porsche’s vision to build “a small, lightweight sports car that uses energy efficiently”, even more than the 911. Two seats, a low, mid-mounted engine, well balanced weight distribution, with a blend of performance and efficiency in the form of a turbo, 4-cylinder engine. Could Ferry’s statement describe the 718 Boxster S

    - a sports car, more succinctly?

Stewart Budd, PCW’s resident Porsche connoisseur and sales executive of almost five years, was asked to determine just how closely the 718 Boxster S holds true to this statement. Stewart is a passionate Porsche person through and through. He often spends his weekends exploring new driving routes and always has a recommendation or two up his sleeve for a quick, spirited drive. So, when presented with the opportunity to test the ideal

sports car over ideal sports car terrain, we didn’t have to ask twice… We’ll let Stew take the wheel from here.

The plan was to head west as early as possible… push through the Sydney crawl for 40 minutes or so, grab a quick coffee at Richmond, and then drive out over the Blue Mountains. The Putty Road and the Royal National Park - Willoughby has explored these routes before. This time, something new and different was required. The roads to the Blue Mountains are familiar to me and perfect for the task ahead. This is where we would explore the corners and the car, and how they both got along!

Our weapon of choice for the drive? The 718 Boxster S, complete with special-order Lava Orange paintwork, 20-inch Carrera S wheels in gloss black, and most importantly (for me), Sport Chrono Package and Porsche Active Suspension Management.

Fleeing the city, the 718 cruised down the M2 effortlessly; cruise control locked on as we adjusted ourselves to the new interior. Mirrors set, seats set and most importantly, roof down. Nestling into the car, I start perfecting the seat. This 718 is fitted with 18-way adaptive sport seats and I intended to use every adjustment to find the perfect position. Locked and loaded and ready to go, we looked for our exit, which takes us toward Richmond. Here we get our much-needed caffeine fix; fuel for the driver.

From here it starts to get interesting, with the Bells Line of Road taking us up high and down again in almost the same breath. It is long, flowing, at times tight and technical and leads all the way to Lithgow. This road in itself is a great drive, but this occasion and this car are something to be celebrated. We will be taking the long way and exploring many of the unknown back roads.

The 718 Boxster S is, to many, the ideal sports car.

  • Bells Line gives a great distinction from city and highways straight from the outset. We are met with a steep, twisting climb that forces the driver and car to work. The dial on the GT sports steering wheel is turned to Sport Plus . The 7-speed PDK and Porsche Active Suspension Management is immediately in tune with the new terrain. Switching to manual mode (a personal favourite), we dive from fourth, to third, then to second, feeling a fair few pops and bangs through the exhaust. There is a string of corners that all link together well; even an overtaking lane opens up near the top.

Reaching the top of the mountain, the road flattens out and snakes across the ridgeline: giving myself and Lee Dean, photographer and owner of Duck and Whale Magazine time to trade first impressions. The smiles grow quickly. Celebrating this sports car in its natural environment has left us salivating for more… more corners, more quick gear changes and more reasons to celebrate.

Reaching the top we discover a great old petrol station/general store and the artistic streak kicks in. This is much too good a photo opportunity to miss. The 718 Boxster is muscular, chiselled and simply stunning from every angle and the aggressive new styling is obvious. The camera is working overtime… we could stay here for hours: finding the one money shot but that’s not what we came here to do.

Bells Line of Road is a long road offering a complex mix of corners: tightening with its descent towards Lithgow. The 718 Boxster S responds instantly with its new, more direct steering rack lifted from the 911 Turbo.

Not wanting to get stuck on straight roads, we turned left just before Lithgow onto Hartley Valley Road and headed

towards Hartley Vale. This is a vast, open flowing section of road recently re-tarred and complete with some second gear switch backs. Then, as if out of nowhere, the road and scenery open up onto what could have once been a lake. We make our way toward Lithgow from here, this time turning left at the Shell Service Station onto Magpie Hollow Road. Again, a flowing road which brings us down the hill and out at the picturesque Lake Lyell. There are plenty of spirited back roads in this area and you can really make a day of exploring them.

We soon discover one of the greatest little sections of road. Very tight, very steep and very fun; ‘Sodwalls Road’ takes us all the way down to the little town of Tarana. So much fun in fact that we decide to turn around and drive it again, grinning from ear-to-ear. This time when we reach the intersection at the top we turn right onto Hampton Road and relax a bit as we head towards Jenolan Caves. The road down into Jenolan Caves is fantastic if you have enough time. We keep heading straight, then veer left onto Jenolan Caves Road. The road sweeps left then right, perfectly suited to flicking from fourth to third and back again. Did I mention I like manual mode?

A quick combination of roads here brings us out to the Great Western Highway. Not too much traffic… yet. By this time we’d worked up a sweat and hunger and ducked into Mt Victoria for a bite to eat. From Mt Victoria there are two ways to head back to Sydney: the twisty option is to go left and head down the Darling Causeway then back onto Bells Line of Road. The more direct route is straight down the highway and onto the M4. No surprise which one we took…

Where would we find you on your weekends and time away?My parents have a small property in the Hills District. You will find me there enjoying rural life with our horses and dogs on most weekends. I also enjoy driving and it is no coincidence I ended up with Porsche. I have always gone to track days since I had my licence and also owned a few track cars over the years. Drifting was a motorsport I reported on and enjoyed, which led me to take up the sport in 2011. I now teach drifting at Drift School Australia and am usually there every other weekend.

What led you to join the team at Porsche Centre Willoughby? There are two elements at play here: firstly joining the Porsche marque, and then linking that with Porsche Centre Willoughby. PCW is soon to celebrate 50 years as Australia’s longest established Porsche dealership, with Sean Lygo as General Manager of 25 years. The reputation and history of this centre is something you can’t buy. It was always my desire to work at PCW and once I felt my experience was enough to get me in the door, I approached Sean. By a stroke of luck

    here did you work prior

    to PCW?A chance bet with

friends saw me join their YouTube channel,

producing content about supercars. I enjoyed it so much that I changed from my then engineering degree to communications, and pursued a career as an automotive journalist. Much of my early years were spent reporting from the pit lane across different motorsports.

I was then contracted by Citroen to steer their digital media campaign when they debuted a factory team in the Australian Rally Championship. It was while travelling with the team that I gained my first experience with a manufacturer in motorsport. After plenty of travel and a suitcase lifestyle, this prompted the switch to marketing. I took the role of communications officer for an Australian oil company that sponsored quite a few of the racing series I was reporting on, then managed a portfolio of brands including GoPro, Brembo and Stilo before formally joining a German marque.

Whe was looking for a new marketing manager at that exact time. I still pinch myself over the timing of it all.

What in particular most appealed to you about the Porsche brand before you started?Porsche has remained true to its principles and never compromised in favour of volume. Other brands (which some may argue were once as special) have lost their exclusivity due to a diluted model range or diversified business strategy. In our contemporary world of mass production and consumption, a Porsche is still unique.

The brand is humble too, often understating performance figures and never bragging about their phenomenal achievements.

Is that still the same thing that makes you love working with the marque today?Let’s just say I’ve become a bit of a pest in my group of ‘car friends’ because I now sound like one of those people with tunnel vision when it comes to cars. It is Porsche or nothing.

Coming from another premium German brand, I didn’t expect much difference on the ‘inside’ in terms of the business operation. I was very wrong. What I noticed immediately

was the level of investment they make in their staff. It is unmatched. For instance, my first day was at a training course for the 911 in Tasmania. Porsche had prepared road test drives, track drives, and tours of the Targa Tasmania stages over two days. They wanted to impress us, their own employees... This included marketing, sales and service personnel - not reserved for GMs only. I don’t know any other manufacturer that spoils and invests in all levels of their staff like that. Most have to read the specs of a new vehicle online at the same time as their clients, and then learn how to use it when it arrives on the showroom floor!

The phrase ‘build quality’ gets thrown around casually when referring to European and luxury vehicles, but I didn’t really have a baseline for true build quality until I joined Porsche. You just can’t compare a Porsche. Drive one - new or old, and you can feel it straightaway. It’s different.

Do you have a favourite event from the past year you have organized?I certainly embrace the ‘events’ part of my title to the fullest. My first event was the Hunter Valley Escape in April last year. This

will always stand out as my ‘Welcome to Willoughby’ event. I worked closely with Sean and our clients to deliver a day people still talk about. I also had the very important task of conducting a reconnaissance of the route the day before – myself and a 911 C2S alone on the Putty Road… Quite the initiation.

The atmosphere at our events is something I can’t translate through words or images. The ‘W Club’ (my nickname for our clients who join our events) has grown since I have come on board, and it really starts to feel like a day out with great friends. While it is important to deliver on the Porsche lifestyle expectation, at the same time we like to create a unique Porsche Centre Willoughby experience and in so doing, build a community of PCW advocates.

P.S. The Hunter Valley Escape is coming up again in May. Do join us!

Can you list your top 3 favourite Porsches of all time? This is a very, very difficult ask. I would need something modern, something classic and something just plain selfish. The 997 GT3 RS 4.0 would be the modern. A 993 GT2 for

classic. As a child, the Carrera GT was the first Porsche that really caught my attention, and so would be my selfish choice. Can I be really selfish and ask for a 911 R too?

Is there something on your ‘to do’ list at PCW that you are excited for?The Porsche Winter Driving Experience. Essentially, drifting 911s through the snow north of the Arctic Circle. Porsche books out a ski resort in Finland for the winter months and conduct an amazing driving programme. 2018 will be my year to take our PCW clients and show them a special Willoughby experience, while putting my drifting skills to good use. I am currently looking for a co-driver...

MACAN TURBO - PERFORMANCE PACKAGE MACAN

As the ultimate sports car of the compact SUV segment, the Macan has been setting standards in terms of driving

dynamics since its debut. Now, Porsche is upping the ante once again: Equipped with the ‘Performance Package’, the Macan Turbo now tops off the model line, impressing with enhanced driving dynamics, increased agility and an even greater emotional appeal.

The twin-turbocharged, 3.6-litre V6 engine has been upgraded to deliver 324 kW which is 30 kW more than the Macan Turbo. The car now accelerates from

zero to 100 km/h in just 4.4 seconds (a reduction of 0.4 seconds), and achieves a new top speed of 272 km/h.

However, it is not just the engine power that is given a boost, with a newly developed brake system, lowered body, controlled sports chassis, Sport Chrono Package and sports exhaust system all fitted as standard.

The Macan Turbo with Performance Package is available for order now, priced from $143,500 excluding statutory and dealer charges, with local deliveries expected from April.

This new in-line 2.0-litre petrol engine is designed to be particularly sporty and efficient, producing 185 kW of power and 370 Nm of torque. Together with the standard seven-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission it delivers impressive performance with a comparatively low fuel consumption of 7.4 L/100 kms.

Visually, and in its features, the new entry-level Macan only differs from other more powerful models in its details. Exterior distinguishing characteristics are side window trim strips in black, also black brake calipers beneath the standard 19-inch Macan Turbo wheels, the same wheels as on the Macan S models.

As is characteristic for all Porsche models, the Macan is capable of converting its engine power into exceptionally sporty driving dynamics. This is ensured by the standard Porsche Traction Management PTM active all-wheel drive system in interplay with an agile suspension and precise steering. With an unladen weight of 1,770 kilograms, the Macan is the lightest SUV made by Porsche, which translates into agile handling.

The list of standard features is impressive, and includes: Bi-Xenon head lights with dynamic head light levelling, ParkAssist front and rear with reversing camera, Lane Departure Warning, Memory Package for the electric driver’s seat, Alcantara seat inserts, three-zone automatic climate control, Digital Radio, Tyre Pressure Monitoring and Porsche’s latest Porsche Communication Management (PCM) including navigation, mobile phone preparation, audio interfaces and voice control system.

The new entry Macan model is available to order now with deliveries expected late in the first quarter of 2017. Please contact our sales department to register your interest on 02 896 6900 or email [email protected].

    1. Simon can you tell us a little bit about yourself. Where did you grow up and go to school?

I grew up in Killarney Heights, went to school at Shore in North Sydney. I’ve got two brothers, one in New York and the other is in Geraldton, WA. My wife’s family is in Guatemala. These days, our family is spread over the globe.

    2. You recently sold your accountancy company, congratulations! Tell us about how you started and grew the company and what might be in store for you now?

My professional career started at KPMG, however after seven years of audit, I decided

that it was time to see what opportunity was out there to start something myself. So, I went out on my own and whilst it was a steep learning curve – there is no feeling like being able to genuinely help someone with their small business and see it turn around. The business that I started in my lounge room sold last year with 40 employees in offices in Sydney, Melbourne and the Philippines.

I’ve got this theory, that if you do the same as everyone else, you’ll end up with the same as everyone else. For some people, that is perfectly fine, but for me, I knew that was never going to be enough. To run your own business, you need to take educated risks and make quick decisions daily, you work

constantly, not just 9 to 5 – and that’s not for everyone. So, unlike most of my friends in safe jobs, I am one of the few crazy ones that have not purchased my own home, but that has afforded me the ability and liquidity to make investments in several different business opportunities. A decision that I am very happy with.

Right now, I am enjoying some time off. As a small business owner the past 9 years, even if I was travelling the globe, I was permanently connected to my phone or laptop managing the business and clients. Initial thoughts on my next move are that it needs to be able to balance lifestyle with something that can make a significant positive difference to small businesses in Australia. Helping small business, which is the backbone of the Australian economy, is my passion.

  • 3. Can you recall your earliest memory of a Porsche?

I think my earliest memory of a Porsche was the 3 black 911 ‘bad-guy’ cars in the movie ‘Condorman’, whilst the rest of the movie was terrible, the memory stuck as they were just the coolest cars I had ever seen. This was later reinforced by the black 964 Turbo in Bad Boys (1994) - a black Porsche was just the ultimate cool car. I needed to find a way to get one… one day!

There was a bit of a divide to cover however: the sportiest car we had in my family growing up was a 1992 Toyota Celica. I always loved cars, but the cars we were surrounded by then are very different to what they are now.

    4. When did you purchase your first Porsche?

My first Porsche came from PCW in 2009, on my 27th birthday. It was such a great experience, I still remember the conversations and the test drive with the sales consultant, Derek Lye clearly. It was the first time that I had ever driven a Porsche – we went down the freeway, up Ben Boyd Road and it just blew my mind by how good it was! The appeal of the C4S was that the power went to all four wheels (so I had a chance of keeping it on the road), and the wide body just looked so good!

    5. What are you currently driving?

Over the past few years I have been fortunate enough to have a few GT3s and 911 Turbos. I tend to alternate between them because they are both phenomenal cars, but so different in what they offer.

I’m currently driving a silver 991 Turbo Cab, and the next GT3 is on order. The 991 Turbo is an incredible car. It is one of the fastest cars on the road and yet it is capable of doing the school drop off with my 3 kids and all their bags and paraphernalia. There is something cool about how understated it is. The convertible has also been fun throughout this summer and means we can really enjoy all the sounds of the engine as it takes off.

    6. You’re quite adventurous and are always in a different part of the world. How did you find the Porsche driving experience, ‘Ice- Force S’ in Finland?

The trips to Finland with Porsche are just amazing. I’ve been back there four times now with the various courses: Camp 4S, Ice-Force, Ice-ForceS. The highlight was certainly Ice-ForceS last year. We were let out in the new GT3 RS, 911 Turbo S, and 4 years in (so confidence certainly exceeded ability), we had a great time flying around the ice circuits in these incredible cars. Drifting at speed on ice in some of the best cars in the world – it was every bit as good as it sounds!

    7. Tell us about the Bullrush Rally and how you got involved?

The Bullrush Rally is an annual event that was founded on the principle of uniting like-minded individuals in a shared pursuit of adventure and unforgettable experiences. This will be the 3rd year of the Bullrush Rally. It is a first-class five-day event designed for people who love their cars and want to drive on some of the greatest roads Australia has to offer. The first one in 2015 went down the east coast from Brisbane to Melbourne, and last year we went from Adelaide to Sydney via the Great Ocean Road and the Snowy Mountains… it was just incredible.

Whilst the cars, roads, and exclusive evening events are first class; the greatest part of the Bullrush Rally is the friendships that you make along the way. In an effort to keep the team spirit alive in between the annual event, we have recently started ‘Bullrush Rally Drive Days’. These are one-day free events that past entrants and people interested in learning about Bullrush can attend.

Some of the best contacts I have made in business have come through pursuing things I love to do: skiing and driving!

To stay up to date with all that is going on, check out the website and/or follow Bullrush Rally on Facebook. http://www.bullrushrally.com/

    8. What advice would you give to someone who is trying to achieve the balanced kind of success that you enjoy?

You design your own life. Dream big, make goals and then work harder (and smarter) than everyone else, regularly check and measure to ensure you are making progress. For me, there was a pivotal moment around the time I started my first business – without any notice my dad got very sick and in an instant all plans for enjoying life when retirement came were shattered. This event had a big impact on the way I live my life: I make sure that there are memorable experiences every year, and drive my dream car every day – I don’t leave it until tomorrow.

During Laura’s time here, PCW underwent significant growth not only in demand for Porsche vehicles, but also physically with our renovations and expanding team. Laura’s diverse experience ensured these ‘growing pains’ were handled with grace and were of minimal impact to our clients.

Her appointment as Customer Relationship Manager (and a dynamic one at that) saw Laura support the business across many fronts including W Magazine, events, public relations and human resources, while implementing processes which we will continue to use long after her departure.

“Looking back I guess the most enjoyable and satisfying aspect of my job was meeting and building relationships with many of PCW’s inspiring, successful and very valued clients.”

We wish Laura much success in her new endeavour.

Heading in a new direction, Laura leaves PCW to pursue her passion other than Porsches. A clinical nutritionist,

Laura will move into a consultancy role with a new brand in the health and wellbeing space.
