GOSPEL READING Matthew 16:13-20
SIMON PETER ACKNOWLEDGES JESUS AS THE CHRIST AND IS GIVEN THE KEY
TO THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN.
It is important to read today’s Gospel and next week’s Gospel as two parts of a single story. These readings are a turning point in Matthew’s Gospel. This week we hear Jesus name Simon Peter as the rock upon which he will build his Church. Next week we will hear Jesus call this same Simon Peter "Satan" when he reacts negatively to Jesus’ prediction about his passion and death. In today’s Gospel, Jesus asks his disciples what people are saying about his identity. The disciples indicate that most people believe that Jesus is a prophet of Israel. Then Jesus asks his disciples who they believe that he is. Simon Peter answers, identifying Jesus as the Messiah, the Son of God. Jesus commends Simon Peter for this profession of faith, indicating that this insight has come from God. Because of Simon Peter’s response, Jesus calls him the "rock" upon which Jesus will build the Church. This is a word play on the name Peter, which is the Greek word for "rock." Peter is then given special authority by Jesus, a symbolic key to the Kingdom of Heaven. Peter will play an important role in the early Christian community as a spokesperson and a leader. In today’s Gospel, Peter’s recognition of Jesus’ identity is credited to a revelation by God. This will contrast sharply with Jesus’ rebuke of Peter in next week’s Gospel. When Peter rejects Jesus’ prediction of his passion and death, Peter is said to no longer be thinking as God does but as humans do. The use of the term church in today’s Gospel is one of only three such occurrences in Matthew’s Gospel. Peter in this Gospel is being credited as the foundation for the Church, a privilege granted to him because of his recognition of Jesus’ identity. The Church continues to be grounded in the faith that Jesus Christ is Lord.

SIMÓN PEDRO RECONOCE A JESÚS COMO EL CRISTO Y SE LE DA LA LLAVE DEL REINO DE LOS CIELOS.
Es importante leer el Evangelio de hoy y el Evangelio de la próxima semana como dos partes de una sola historia. Estas lecturas son un punto de giro en el Evangelio de Mateo. Esta semana escuchamos a Jesús nombrar a Simón Pedro como la roca sobre la cual edificará su Iglesia. La semana que viene escucharemos a Jesús llamar a este mismo Simón Pedro "Satanás" cuando reacciona negativamente a la predicción de Jesús sobre su pasión y muerte. En el evangelio de hoy, Jesús pregunta a sus discípulos qué dice la gente sobre su identidad. Los discípulos indican que la mayoría de la gente cree que Jesús es un profeta de Israel. Entonces Jesús pregunta a sus discípulos quién creen que es. Responde Simón Pedro, identificando a Jesús como el Mesías, el Hijo de Dios. Jesús elogia a Simón Pedro por esta profesión de fe, lo que indica que esta percepción proviene de Dios. MISSION APPEAL FOR THE SEMINARIO DIOCESANO DE MORELIA (DIOCESAN SEMINARY OF MORELIA, MEXICO). Each year St Anthony’s participates in a Missionary Cooperative Program with the Diocese where we host various ministers as they travel throughout the Diocese to raise money for their program. We are unable to host this year due to the Covid-19 situation, however we have a virtual program on our website and our Facebook pages. This year’s fund raising effort is for the Diocesan Seminary of Morelia in Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico. There are currently 240 seminarians studying there to become a priest. The seminary has a critical need for a computer lab to assist in educating the priests. Currently, they do all of their written work on typewriters. We can help bring the seminary into the 21st century. Please go to our website (https://www.samckyle.org/mcp) to view the videos in English and Spanish.
For online givers, you can contribute through the Diocese Second Collection on our e-giving page (https://www.samckyle.org/second-collection). The proceeds from this e-giving will be totaled at the end of August and dedicated to the MCP program for the seminary. We will not have a specific second collection in the masses, however you can use envelopes in the Narthex and write “Second Collection” on the envelope and leave it in the baskets throughout the month of August. We will add this to the collection.

GRIEF SUPPORT MINISTRY
A grief support ministry will be available for anyone who has lost a loved one. Participants will be led on a journey that encourages
them to grow in faith and to deepen their spiritually through the difficult experience of grieving.
Our next grief support meeting is on Saturday, September 12 at 9:30am. Since we cannot meet at this time face to face, we will be holding the meeting using the zoom platform. This is an "open door" ministry. Registration is not required. The Vocation Chalice is a ministry of prayer. Families or individuals host the Vocation Chalice in their homes and pray
